SOCW 6051: Diversity, Human Rights, and Social Justice Week 5 

Assignment: Multiracial Discrimination.

Dalmage (2013) writes, “Parents and teachers should be aware of the unique forms of discrimination faced by multiracial children and the White supremacist system in which discrimination flourishes” (p. 101). As social workers, we should be aware of our own understanding of what it means to be multiracial in society.

This awareness includes a review of our own potential biases that might exist. We need to challenge our own personal ideas about how we categorize individuals and those assumptions that follow along with those categories. Rather, we must respect our client’s experience as a multiracial person in the world, beginning with asking him or her how they would define themselves when completing an intake or assessment form. Further, a social worker must be aware of the many forms of racism and prejudice a person with a multiracial background might experience.

As Dalmage discusses, judgment comes from many sides with different intentions and expectations. Being aware of the particular forms of racism that a person who is multiracial will experience will give you the ability to do your best to understand their experience and empathize.

According to the authors, privacy and security go hand in hand; and hence, privacy cannot be protected without implementing proper security controls and technologies. Today, organizations must make not only reasonable efforts to offer protection of privacy of data, but also must go much further as privacy breaches are damaging to its customers, reputation, and potentially could put the company out of business.  As we continue learning from our various professional areas of practice, its no doubt that breaches have become an increasing concern to many businesses and their future operations.   

For this discussion, find an example of a security breach that compromised data records at a company in the same industry as you will be using in your final paper. Summarize the breach, discuss the data that was lost and identify security controls that you would recommend being in place (be certain to remember to cite sources) that could have prevented this breach from occurring.

Elderly

Addressing Needs of the Elderly

Work with the elderly is multifaceted and becoming increasingly important as our aging population increases. Middle-aged adults are finding themselves with difficult decisions related to caring for elderly members of their families, often with the added burdens of health and mobility limitations. In addition, communities face questions regarding how to meet the needs of elderly populations—needs that may include the home delivery of meals, medical care, and transportation.

For this week’s Discussion, you analyze the needs of the elderly in the community where you live to identify social work interventions that could help meet their needs. Consider the cultural backgrounds and other diversity-related characteristics of the elderly population in your community as these inform the types of interventions you select.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a description of a need in your community’s elderly population. Then, propose a plan of action regarding how a social work program or intervention could meet this need. (Since this plan of action may be outside your everyday responsibilities as a clinical social worker, assume that your employer agrees that this service is needed and is granting you the time you need to accomplish this task.)Include in your plan of action the goal of the intervention (i.e., what the intervention will accomplish) and three components of the intervention, explaining how they support this goal.

Explain how ethical frameworks shape business decisions.

Research the Purdue Pharma (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/29/health/purdue-opioids-oxycontin.html) that has been in the news for an ethical dilemma. Prepare a PowerPoint about this company’s ethical dilemma and resulting ethical failure, according to the following instructions. 

  1. Create a 15 slide PowerPoint presentation that includes:
    • Title slide with your name, course, date, school, title of presentation;
    • Agenda slide – This lists the key points covered in the PPT;
    • Content slides containing bullet points information with illustrations, diagrams, pictures, graphics etc., as appropriate to the slide’s content;
    • Speaker’s notes on each slide – either text presented in the Speaker Notes section at the bottom of the slides or Audio through your Voice speaking (or both); (Note: Speaker’s Notes are not duplication of the text on the slides. They are explanatory narrative.)
  2. Identify the company you selected;
  • explain the company and its industry;
  • provide the factual background of the problem; and
  • clearly state the ethical dilemma presented by the situation. There should be only ONE ethical dilemma. The company had two choices: the act it chose and an alternative it did not do.

3. Identify and define at least one ethical framework that the company apparently employed in making its decision. Note — Not “Should have used.” It is not acceptable to say it did not act ethically or did not use a framework. Analyze it. Frameworks include utilitarianism, free market ethics, deontology, virtue ethics , etc., covered in your course readings.

4. Then, identify and define at least one ethical framework that the company should have usedwhen the problem arose, and explain how to apply it for them to have reached a better result than what actually happened. Be clear.

5. Identify and explain measures the company should implement to avoid this type of problem in the future.

6. Within your discussion include whether the company had a code of ethics or policy that seemed to apply to the situation, and if so, what went wrong with that?

7. Explain what business leadership in any company can learn from this situation.

8. Have a conclusion that wraps up the key points.

9. Include a Reference slide with at least seven (7) credible sources listed in APA format. (NOTE: Sources must be cited in slides and speaker’s notes for direct quotes, specific facts and graphics, same as in a paper, per APA format. PROBLEM: You have been directed by your corporate or organizational president to research one of the following situations/problems and prepare a formalized research paper. Review and Selection of a Standardized Test

In Unit 1, you read “The Concerns of the Profession” on pages 66–68 of your Psychological Testing and Assessment text as well as the Code. While the Code addresses the roles of test developers and test users separately, you will be following the standards for test users and, specifically, the section on selecting tests (refer page 5). There are nine elements to consider when selecting a test. You will focus on the first four of these elements for this assignment.

In your paper:

  • Identify a test category      that is relevant to your academic and professional career goals. The List      of Tests by Type document identifies the 11 categories you may choose      from. They include (1) intelligence/cognitive abilities, (2)      achievement/aptitude, (3) personality, (4) behavior, (5) adaptive      behavior, (6) neuropsychological, (7) career/business/organization, (8)      autism, (9) depression, (10) preschool, and (11) behavior analytic skill      assessments.
  • Select three tests from a      single category using the List of Tests by Type document. (Note: If      you have an interest in a particular test that is not on this list, then      you may, as an option, submit a request to your instructor to include it      in your first assignment with two other tests on      the list in the same category. Your instructor will review      it and determine if you may proceed with including that test in your      assignment or recommend that you select three tests from the list.)
  • Compare and contrast these      three tests according to the Code’s first four elements.
    • Access the Capella library       and conduct a search. Use the MMY database to locate and read a review       for each test.
    • Visit the publishers’       website for each test to obtain additional information.
    • Return to the Capella       library to choose a database, for example, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and       ERIC (education research). Search for journal articles that are relevant       to the four elements and each test. (See the PSY7610 Library Search       Guide, linked in the resources, for search advice. An optional worksheet       is also provided to you in the resources to facilitate your research and       literature review.)
