Assignment 3: Social variables and health outcomes

Overview

From a sociological viewpoint, the analysis of health outcomes can be understood through a variety of social variables. Throughout this semester, we have covered several of these, including race, gender, and class in society. For sociologists, these variables can be correlated very strongly with longevity rates, propensities for certain types of disease, and overall rates of mortality. In this final essay, you will describe the key relationship between these social variables and health outcomes, and also engage in your own independent research in which you will come up with one meaningful example of a health issue that is impacted by these variables. This paper will conclude with your own policy opinions about what you think government can do to reduce the impact of these social variables upon these health concerns.

Instructions

Complete a 8-10 page final paper that satisfies the following three areas:

  1. Using several sociological concepts covered in our readings and discussion, explain how sociologists view the relationship between the key social variables of race, gender, class and health. (For example, explain how the intersection of race, class, and gender can help us predict health related outcomes.)
  2. After engaging in “your own” independent research, citing a minimum of five (5) peer-reviewed journal articles (no more than five years old) provide one meaningful example of a health problem that is clearly impacted by race, class, and gender.
  3. Finally, detail a brief policy proposal in which you explain how government intervention may reduce the impact of race, class, and gender upon health outcomes in the United States. Here, you want to identify at least two organizations/agencies.

The assignment should include a title page, abstract, table of contents, body of paper, and a References page (does not count toward the requirements)

The paper should be typed, double-spaced, 1” margins, arial or times new roman 12 pt font, and saved as .doc.  The paper should be in APA format (cover page, running header, major heading, subheadings, in-text citations, and reference list),

The St. Thomas Aquinas vs) Bloomingdale are Bledisloe Cup favorites every year, having won 47 times compared to Wallabies’s 12 victories. The Wallabies haven’t won since

2002 before a five-year winning streak turned into 16 straight losses. However, the Wallabiesn Wallabies thoroughly dismantled All Blacks in Game 1 with a

St. Thomas Aquinas vs) Bloomingdale will face the St. Thomas Aquinas vs) Bloomingdale on Wednesday night for the second time in his career. The first occasion was a historic one.

In the regular season finale last year on Apr. 11, Fultz became the youngest player in MMA Full Fight Game 2021 history to record a triple-double,

posting 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists at 19 years, 317 days old.

The Sixers blew out the Bucks that night, 130-95, winning their 16th straight game and securing the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

One of the more memorable parts of that game was how Fultz’s teammates reacted to his accomplishment. He was mobbed after grabbing the rebound to wrap up his

triple-double, and doused in an impromptu celebration in the locker room after the game.

“They poured strawberry milk, chocolate milk, water,” Fultz said. “They drowned me with everything, but it’s all love and appreciation.”

Redick was sidelined with lower back tightness in the regular season finale vs. the Bucks and Ben Simmons had a rare quiet night, only playing 22 minutes,

which led to a lot of time together in the second half for Fultz and T.J. McConnell. That’s a contrast to these past two games, where Brett Brown has

preferred McConnell over Fultz down the stretch with Simmons sidelined.

Simmons is set to return to the Sixers’ lineup after missing Tuesday’s game against the Pistons with back tightness, according to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes.

Though Fultz got the start at the point in Tuesday’s 133-132 overtime loss to Detroit (see observations), scoring 13 points on 6 for 9 shooting, Brown

thought McConnell was a better option when the game was on the line.

“We ended up going with T.J. for defensive reasons,” Brown told reporters. “We’ve learned that T.J. defensively has that MMA Full Fight Game 2021

experience. I think T.J. was 3 for 3 in the fourth period and really had a heck of a fourth period. But defensively especially, and he produced on offense.

We ended up going with a more senior type of player and were in a position to walk out of here with a win, and we just came up short at the end.”

The numbers back up Brown’s assertion that McConnell was the better defensive option Tuesday night. MMA Full Fight Game 2021.com/Stats, Detroit scored

76 points on 65 possessions when McConnell was on the floor, compared to 60 points on 45 possessions when Fultz was on the court. Pistons players shot 3 for

10 when guarded by McConnell, 9 for 12 when defended by Fultz.

Fultz has clearly struggled defensively, especially when it comes to making the right reads on ball screens. Still, the argument for playing Fultz late in

the fourth quarter and overtime is more about the future than the present — if Brown is committed to “growing” Fultz, as he’s said he is, perhaps he’ll start

giving Fultz more late-game exposure soon.

are one of five undefeated teams left in the English Premier League. Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is averaging 27.3 points, 16 rebounds and 5.7 assists per

game, has led Milwaukee in scoring and rebounding every game. Khris Middleton has made a ridiculous 15 of 23 three-pointers.

DEMONSTRATING EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP

  • Write a 8-9-page evaluation of key aspects of a population-based health concern, including your selection of members to form an interprofessional, collaborative coalition to achieve the stated goal. 8-9 PAGES EXCLUDING THE COVER PAGE AND THE REFERENCE PAGE.
Resolving population health concerns requires the combined efforts of numerous agencies and individuals to address the Triple Aim of improving the patient experience, improving the health of populations, and reducing costs. This requires an interprofessional and collaborative effort to address the complex factors at the individual, organizational, community, and policy levels associated with the multiple factors affecting the health and well-being of our communities (Graffunder, Sakurada, & Nordisk, 2016).
As a scholar-practitioner in the field, you may be expected to develop and lead a diverse team of health care professionals, civic leaders, community stakeholders, constituents, community members, other interested parties, and city, state, and government agencies in addressing a wide range of issues affecting the health of diverse groups.
This assessment provides an opportunity for you to apply your leadership skills to form a collaborative, interprofessional coalition to address a population-based health concern from a nursing, public health, or health administration perspective.

CASE STUDY: An Older Immigrant Couple: Mr. and Mrs. Arahan

Instructions: Read the following case study and answer the reflective questions.

Please provide rationales for your answers. Make sure to provide a citation for your answers.

Mr. and Mrs. Arahan, an older couple in their seventies, have been living with their oldest daughter, her husband of 15 years, and their two children, ages 12 and 14. They all live in a middle-income neighborhood in a suburb of a metropolitan city. Mr. and Mrs. Arahan are both college educated and worked full-time while they were in their native country. In addition, Mr. Arahan, the only offspring of wealthy parents, inherited a substantial amount of money and real estate. Their daughter came to the United States as a registered nurse and met her husband, a drug company representative. The older couple moved to the United States when their daughter became a U.S. citizen and petitioned them as immigrants. Since the couple was facing retirement, they welcomed the opportunity to come to the United States. The Arahans found life in the United States different from that in their home country, but their adjustment was not as difficult because both were healthy and spoke English fluently. Most of their time was spent taking care of their two grandchildren and the house. As the grandchildren grew older, the older couple found that they had more spare time. The daughter and her husband advanced in their careers and spent a great deal more time at their jobs. There were few family dinners during the week. On weekends, the daughter, her husband, and their children socialized with their own friends. The couple began to feel isolated and longed for a more active life. Mr. and Mrs. Arahan began to think that perhaps they should return to the home country, where they still had relatives and friends. However, political and economic issues would have made it difficult for them to live there. Besides, they had become accustomed to the way of life in the United States with all the modern conveniences and abundance of goods that were difficult to obtain in their country. However, they also became concerned that they might not be able to tolerate the winter months and that minor health problems might worsen as they aged. They wondered who would take care of them if they became very frail and where they would live, knowing that their daughter had only saved money for their grandchildren’s college education. They expressed their sentiments to their daughter, who became very concerned about how her parents were feeling. This older couple had been attending church on a regular basis, but had never been active in other church-related activities. The church bulletin announced the establishment of parish nursing with two retired registered nurses as volunteers. The couple attended the first opening of the parish clinic. Here, they met one of the registered nurses, who had a short discussion with them about the services offered. The registered nurse had spent a great deal of her working years as a community health  nurse. She informed Mr. and Mrs. Arahan of her availability to help them resolve any health-related issues.

Reflective Questions

1. What strategies could be suggested for this older adult couple to enhance their quality of life?

 2. What community resources can they utilize?

3. What can the daughter and her family do to address the feelings of isolation of the older couple?

 4. What health promotion activities can ensure a healthy lifestyle for them?

Assignment: Perception, Attention, and Short-Term Memory Deficits

Please Read the Instructions Carefully!!!!

Consider the earlier example of short-term memory loss: of entering a room and forgetting your reason for doing so. Also consider distortions of perception and attention from last week.

Individuals can experience difficulty recognizing an object, focusing their attention, or maintaining their short-term memories. Such examples are routine: they occur among many individuals whose brain function resides within the realm of “normal.”

Consider the potential effects on perception, attention, and short-term memory function by damage to different areas of the brain. Also consider the notion that these processes are core elements of higher-level cognitive functions such as language, capacity for abstract thought, and ability to construct plans. These critical brain activities depend on perception, attention, and memory.

For this Assignment, you explore effects of psychological and traumatic conditions on cognitive functioning.

The Assignment: (5–7 pages)

  • Select one of the following conditions: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), traumatic brain injury, stroke, or autism.
  • Explain the nature of the conditions in terms of the following cognitive functions: perception, attention, and short-term memory.
  • Explain effects of medications or other strategies to address one or more of these cognitive functions.

Support your Assignment with at least five original, peer-reviewed sources, in addition to any course material used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.

Deliverable 5 – Data Collection and Ethics

Deliverable 5 – Data Collection and Ethics

Competency

Develop examples of ethical and privacy concerns associated with data supporting business intelligence efforts.

Instructions

You work for a tourism board at a top destination within the United States that among other tasks, sends information out to potential visitors, performs direct mailing campaigns, solicits newsletter sign ups, and helps drive economic growth by attracting visitors to the destination. The direct mailing team for your organization accomplishes this through email blasts, mailing flyers, and texting campaigns. The address list the organization has in place is seen as a strategic advantage, as it has extensive information about potential and repeat visitors, and has been compiled from various sources over the years. The organization has recently developed a mobile application and hopes to leverage mobile devices and tablets to help make obtaining information easier for the visitors, as well as collecting more information on patterns of consumer behavior. Since the mobile application will have access to a great deal of personal information belonging to the users (email address, GPS data, phone number, etc.), it has been suggested this information be automatically uploaded to the direct mailing database, and signing them up for various promotional efforts and communications. It had also been suggested there may be an opportunity for the marketing department to partner with the local theme parks and attractions within the area, sharing the databases from each to form one large database to reach more users. The idea has been presented to the organization’s legal counsel for review, as the IT team is fairly certain the end user agreement for the mobile application states the collected information can be reused and sold as needed. The public relations team has taken a different position and feels there is potential for backlash in social media as well as other public outcries should the data be sold to or shared with other organizations, and questions whether the data should even be stored since there are additional pieces of data being collected that have no purposeful use for the tourism board. They have asked for your input on the matter.

The questions they are presenting you with include:

  • What are the general practices surrounding data collection?
  • How can privacy violations occur?
  • Are there any risks, issues, or problems associated with collecting and storing data that isn’t needed now, in the event it may be needed in the future? What information do other organizations collect?
  • The end user agreement says we CAN collect, reuse, and sell data as needed, but does that mean we should? Is there a level of ethical data collection and storage that we should be considering?

The task:

Record a presentation using the screen sharing Webware/software of your choice (an Internet search will reveal many free options). Your presentation can be recorded with your own voiceover and visuals, just as you would if you were giving the presentation live.In addition to the presentation, prepare a memo to the head of the public relations department outlining any possible risks associated with collecting and using the data in the manner described. Your report should include general practices around data collection that are relevant to business operations (i.e., data that is needed vs. not), as well as specific examples how possible privacy violations may be incurred.

I Should Hire You: Elevator Speech Presentation

watch video first

Prior to beginning watch The Elevator Pitch  (Links to an external site.)video about creating an elevator speech, and watch the following examples:

Next, design your own one-minute sales pitch tailored toward your chosen career path. It is recommended that you also review the 30 Second Elevator Pitch and Professional Summaries  (Links to an external site.)online resource. Consider the person in your field whom you would most like the opportunity to speak with, and keep this person in mind throughout the process.

In your pitch, specifically

  1. Choose a person that you want to meet in an elevator to give them your pitch for being a qualified future candidate for their organization.
  2. Discuss your areas of expertise in the area of psychology (thus far) and how they could be applied to benefit the organization or industry in your future career.
  3. Record your 30-second to one-minute video speech utilizing the Canvas recording tool, or using any recording software of your choice. Be sure to consider how you would want to be perceived visually by the person as well. Introduce yourself, demonstrate your value to the organization, and end with a request for your listener.
  4. It is recommended that you create a script or, at minimum, a list of talking points prior to creating your recording. For an explanation of steps to follow when creating an elevator speech, read the PSY620: Preparing Your Elevator Speech downloaddocument.
  5. Tips:
    1. If you do not have a recording device, it is possible to plug your ear buds into the microphone slot to create the voiceover. (It just will not be quite as clear so make sure to speak clearly and a bit more loudly.)
    2. You can also use the recorder on many phones and send the audio to yourself by email.
    3. If using Zoom, upload to YouTube or Screencast-o-matic to share a link. (You can even edit in Screencast-o-matic if you need to.)

Once you have completed your recording, share your pitch with the class by copying and pasting the link for your recording into your discussion post by Day 5, unless you utilized the Canvas recording tool which does not require this step. Include in your written summary the name of the person you chose to give your speech to as well as a 50- to 150-word description of the individual’s background, industry, area of expertise, and your rationale for choosing this person.

Guided Response: Review and listen to several of your colleague’s posts/elevator speeches, and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week.

In your responses, provide a substantive critique with a minimum of 100 words of your colleague’s presentation by addressing the following:

  • Did he or she present themselves well?
  • Did he or she seem qualified?
  • Was it clear what he or she has to offer the organization/industry?

Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen to the audio narrative of others. Signature Assignment: Globalization and Information Research

Purpose

This assignment is intended to give you an opportunity to strengthen your skills in gathering and analyzing business-related information. It provides a deeper understanding of how companies can look at globalization as part of their strategic and operational plans. The assignment has two parts: one focused on information research and analysis, and the other is on applied analytics.

Resources:

·  Microsoft Excel®

·  “How Netflix Expanded to 190 Countries in 7 Years” from Harvard Business Review

·  Call Center Waiting Time– The file is attached

Part 1: Globalization and Information Research

Context: Companies that perform well in their country of origin usually consider expanding operations in new international markets. Deciding where, how, and when to expand is not an easy task, though.

Many issues need to be considered before crafting an expansion strategy and investing significant resources to this end, including:

·  the level of demand to be expected for the company’s products/services

·  presence of local competitors

·  the regulatory, economic, demographic, and political environments

Carefully researching and analyzing these and other factors can help mitigate the inherent risk associated with an overseas expansion strategy, thus increasing the likelihood of success.

As a data analyst in your company’s business development department, you’ve been tasked with the responsibility of recommending countries for international expansion. You’ll write a report to the company’s executive team with your research, analysis, and recommendations.

Instructions:

Write a 525-word summary covering the following items:

·  According to the article listed above, what were the most important strategic moves that propelled Netflix’s successful international expansion?

·  The article mentions investments in big data and analytics as one of the elements accompanying the second phase of overseas expansion. Why was this investment important? What type of information did Netflix derive from the data collected?

·  According to the article, what is exponential globalization?

·  Not all international expansion strategies are a resounding success, however. Research an article or video that discusses an instance in which an American company’s expansion efforts in another country failed. According to the article/video you selected, what were the main reasons for this failure? Do you agree with this assessment?

·  Explain some of the reasons why certain companies’ expansion plans have failed in the past.

Part 2: Hypothesis testing

Context: Your organization is evaluating the quality of its call center operations. One of the most important metrics in a call center is Time in Queue (TiQ), which is the time a customer has to wait before he/she is serviced by a Customer Service Representative (CSR). If a customer has to wait for too long, he/she is more likely to get discouraged and hang up. Furthermore, customers who have to wait too long in the queue typically report a negative overall experience with the call. You’ve conducted an exhaustive literature review and found that the average TiQ in your industry is 2.5 minutes (150 seconds).

Another important metric is Service Time (ST), also known as Handle Time, which is the time a CSR spends servicing the customer. CSR’s with more experience and deeper knowledge tend to resolve customer calls faster. Companies can improve average ST by providing more training to their CSR’s or even by channeling calls according to area of expertise. Last month your company had an average ST of approximately 3.5 minutes (210 seconds). In an effort to improve this metric, the company has implemented a new protocol that channels calls to CSR’s based on area of expertise. The new protocol (PE) is being tested side-by-side with the traditional (PT) protocol.

Instructions:

Access the Call Center Waiting Time file. Each row in the database corresponds to a different call. The column variables are as follows:

·  ProtocolType: indicates protocol type, either PT or PE

·  QueueTime: Time in Queue, in seconds

·  ServiceTime: Service Time, in seconds

·  Perform a test of hypothesis to determine whether the average TiQ is lower than the industry standard of 2.5 minutes (150 seconds). Use a significance level of α=0.05.

·  Evaluate if the company should allocate more resources to improve its average TiQ.

·  Perform a test of hypothesis to determine whether the average ST with service protocol PE is lower than with the PT protocol. Use a significance level of α=0.05.

·  Assess if the new protocol served its purpose. (Hint: this should be a test of means for 2 independent groups.)

·  Submit your calculations and a 175-word summary of your conclusions.

EI Games Presentation Skills Course: Coping With Emergencies

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, complete Levels 3 and 4 of the EI Games: Presentation Skills Course and watch the following videos How To Make A Good PowerPoint Presentation (Links to an external site.), Dealing With Objections (Links to an external site.), and How To Do A Good Presentation – 5 Steps To A Killer Opener (Links to an external site.).

Level 3: Preparing for the Presentation presents information about developing the presentation. The preparatory actions include the following:

  • Creating an argument,
  • Appropriate casting,
  • Creating a team,
  • The importance of rehearsal,
  • Opening the presentation,
  • Visual aids, and
  • Fielding the team.

Level 4: Closing to Win focuses on delivering the presentation. Critical areas associated with delivering the presentation include the following:

  • Managing the presentation flow,
  • Delivering a compelling close,
  • Coping with objections,
  • Taking appropriate postpresentation actions, and
  • Negotiating effectively.

While reflecting on the material offered in the EI Games: Presentation Skills Course and developing your paper, consider prior learning and prior work experience, in addition to the material presented. Disagreeing with the principles presented in Levels 3 and 4 is appropriate. However, do not reject the offered principles out of hand. Support acceptance or rejection of the offered principles with critical thinking and sound reasoning.

After completing the Levels 3 and 4 activities, reflect on the situation presented in which a member of the presentation team had an emergency on the day of the presentation. The emergency was such that the team member is unable to deliver her part of the presentation. The solution proposed in the EI Games advised the team to explain the situation to the potential client and ask for a rescheduled presentation date.

Create a summarized presentation problem contingency plan for the following issues:

  • Audience members appear bored and uninterested in the presentation.
  • Audience members frequently interrupt the presentation with objections.
  • Audience members allude to the inconvenience they experienced because of the rescheduled presentation.
  • Audience members ask probing questions the presentation team is unprepared to answer.

Limit contingency summaries to no more than two paragraphs per contingency and one paragraph per identified concern.

In your paper,

  • Appraise the value or lack of value associated with asking for a presentation to be rescheduled because of an emergency.
  • Frame your response with likely client reactions to the reschedule request.
  • Determine three areas of concern the potential client might have based upon the reschedule request.
