SOCW 6070 WK 2 Discussion: External Factors Impacting an Organization

SOCW 6070 WK 2 Discussion: External Factors Impacting an Organization

Last week, you explored how systems theory and the ecological perspective emphasize the interaction between a human services organization and its environment. Any change in one part of the system effects change in another part of the system. Because organizations are not immune to their environment, local, national, and global events affect them.

Social workers in administrative roles must be able to identify and analyze the external factors that affect the function of the human services organizations for which they work. Though you may apply leadership and management skills as you assume an administrative position, you may also be able to repurpose many of the assessment skills you use in clinical practice for macro social work. Just as you gather information about a client and develop strategies for treatment at a micro level, so too, at a macro level, you gather and analyze information about a situation or program and identify appropriate strategies that will support positive organizational functioning.

For this Discussion, you address the Phoenix House case study in the Social Work Case Studies: Concentration Year text.

Post  an analysis of the supervisor’s role in the Phoenix House case study and identify leadership skills that might help the supervisor resolve the issue.

Identify which aspect of this situation would be most challenging for you if you were the supervisor. Finally, explain how you would use leadership skills to proceed if you were the supervisor.

Support your post with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Social Work Supervision, Leadership, and Administration: The Phoenix House

I am the senior social worker at a program called Phoenix House. Phoenix House is an after-school program supporting at-risk middle school youth. It is funded in part by local school districts. Students are generally referred to Phoenix House by school administrators or parents.

I supervise a staff of four full-time social workers and two social work interns from a local university. Staff responsibilities generally include helping students with homework, individual and group counseling, field trips, and recreational games and activities.

Students are usually referred to Phoenix House when school administrators feel that the student is on the cusp of expulsion or long-term suspension from their school, usually due to disciplinary issues. Parents of students may also enroll their children in the Phoenix House program if they feel it will be beneficial. Parents are made aware of Phoenix House and its services through PTA meetings and via school administrators when a disciplinary incident takes place. Although it is free of charge and funded primarily through school district funds, parents are discouraged from using Phoenix House as an after-school or extracurricular activity for their children.

The average clients of Phoenix House are boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 14. The clients possess a range of presenting issues, mostly relating to inappropriate behavior. Some of the clients have been involved with the juvenile justice system in some form or fashion. Almost all of the clients have been suspended from their school at one point or another. Common problems with clients at Phoenix House include fighting, bullying, stealing, and vandalizing.

The staff I supervise have quite a bit of experience working with juveniles with behavioral issues. Some of them have worked in juvenile detention facilities and others have worked at court-mandated youth programs.

We have recently accepted a new client named Daniel. Daniel is a 13-year-old, Caucasian male. Daniel was enrolled by his mother when he was suspended from his school after a marijuana cigarette was found in his book bag by school security staff. It was the first time Daniel had been suspended from his school and the first time a disciplinary report had been filed on him.

Sarah, one of the social workers, asked to speak to me concerning Daniel. Sarah had spoken to Jim, one of our social work interns, about Daniel and the appropriateness of his presence at Phoenix House. Jim is concerned that Daniel is not a “good fit” at Phoenix House because he does not seem to match up with the character and attitudes of the other clients. Sarah shares Jim’s concern and is also concerned that the other clients may be a harmful influence to Daniel.

Sarah is Daniel’s counselor, as well, and has gotten permission from Daniel to share some of his statements from their counseling sessions. The statements indicate Daniel has no idea how the marijuana cigarette got into his book bag and that Daniel suspects it was put there by another student as a joke or as a means to get rid of it during bag searches. Sarah, who has years of experience working with at-risk youth, indicates that she believes Daniel. Daniel has also gone on to state that his mother has a tendency to overreact, and this may be the reason why she enrolled him in the Phoenix House program instead of listening to his explanations.

In response to Jim and Sarah’s concerns, I contacted Daniel’s mother, Lisa. Lisa listened to my concerns but did not feel that it would be right to remove him from the Phoenix House program. She said that even if he had done nothing wrong, Daniel could learn a valuable lesson about consequences by being in the Phoenix House program. I attempted to explain to Lisa that this is not really the purpose of the program and also indicated that Phoenix House is not meant to be a typical after-school or extracurricular program. Lisa retorted that it is her right to enroll her son in the program, and in her opinion, the end result of Daniel being in the program will be positive in nature.

I have shared this conversation with the staff at our weekly meetings. The staff seem convinced that Daniel will not have a positive experience at Phoenix House and feel he is being picked on and bullied by the other clients despite their efforts to prevent it. Some staff members have also pointed out that this may be an ethical issue because they feel the situation violates the social work value of “Do no harm.”

responding to peers

PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THE GUIDED RESPONSE. RESPOND TO PEER 1 THEN PEER 2 SEPARATE .

Guided Response: In education, families are a crucial component of supportive home-school relationships.  Review your classmates posts and respond to at least two of them.  Suggest at least two ways educators can help to best meet the needs of today’s families so that they may be involved in school.   In your guided response be sure to make a connection to something they said in their initial discussion.

PEER 1

What the phrase by John C. Maxwell means to me that parents and different people working in the community as well as the center or school you work at, will not know how much you care for the children and the job you are doing until they see firsthand how much you love your post. This phrase resonates with the classroom that I have been working in for the past two years. Working in the  Head Start classroom, parents are usually nervous or uneasy leaving their child with a stranger at the beginning of the school year. It is not until they see how you care and love for their children that they start to open up and feel more comfortable.

This quote supports the case study in the way that Mrs. Ashland was able to connect with her parents on her consistent communication each morning with both parents and students. This allows parents and children every morning to know precisely what they should do and what is expected of them. Having a set routine gives her students stability that will reflect on how the rest of the day will do. Mrs. Ashland also makes sure to connect one on one with a parent who speaks another language by handing them a flyer filled with information that they may need to be translated in their home language.

Creating a family partnership is essential for the students social-emotional, behavioral, and academic development. Parents and teachers working together as a team will allow students to progress knowing that they are back by a solid team who is working together in their best interest. Mrs. Ashland supports social-emotional development by welcoming in Janes mother to volunteer because she knows that Jane is having a difficult time letting her mom go in the morning. When dealing with Caleb’s father that morning, she demonstrates how she deals with difficult behavior not just from her students but parents as well. He suggests that his child not be allowed to play in a particular center but Mrs. Ashland calmly asking to speak to him after school. Finally, Mrs. Ashland helps her children succeed in the best way by having all the materials set up in the morning that they will need throughout the day, setting them up for academic success.

PEER 2

In my opinion this statement means that knowledge is not as important as passion. I have seen teachers who are educated and have years of experience, but the teacher who cares and builds knowledge on their passion they are viewed as better teachers. When a well-educated teacher doesn’t care about the children they are not viewed positively and no one really cares about their education. An educated teacher who is smart, kind, caring, and shows affection has a better view and impact on the children and families. I am currently a teacher and have been in this field for 13 years, I have gained a lot knowledge and only 4 months away from my BA Degree but I pride myself on being a teacher that is welcoming and loving. I take what I do very seriously and I am very conscious on what impact I leave on every child and their families. It is my goal to make a positive difference in each life I encounter while getting them period for a successful educational path. This case study supports the statement because Mrs. Ashland is positive and available for the children and the parents. I like that she arrives early to prepare for the day. Being prepared allows Mrs. Ashland to greet each child and family as they arrive. She even does something I do, she gets down to the child’s eye level to give them direct eye contact and security. She even takes time to ask parents if they need anything and listens to any concerns or questions. One thing I would like to do that Mrs. Ashland does is sends home newsletters so that the parents know what is happening in the class. Children deal with all kinds of things and as teachers we need to be aware of those situations that can cause them to misbehave and negative impact the relationship with peers and staff. In most cases the child’s behavior is not their fault, they simply don’t know how to handle stress or anxiety. As the teacher it our jobs to teach these skills and practice them with the child while still being sensitive to their needs. Collaboration is important among teachers and partnerships with families and the community is important as well. I think family members should be invited to assist in the classroom. This shows the children that the home and school are on the same page and working together. I work with toddlers every day and my classroom focuses on developing positive social-emotional behavior. Some children are harder to work with than others but that makes the reward greater. A teacher needs to have patience. From my experience I have noticed that having parent involvement makes things a lot easier. The example from the case study I want to use is Jack and his temper. He has a bad temper and thinks its ok to do whatever he wants, and expects to get whatever he wants. He has tantrums and hits other people. Mrs. Ashland can help this by re-directing him, give him praise when he does something positive, and a parent-teacher conference could help. The conference could be just to inform the parents of what is going on in class and receive some insight from them that could help him at school. Mrs. Ashland can also share some strategies that she is using to advance his social-emotional skills.

Early Abolitionist Art and Literature

Each week we will be looking at a set period from our past.  Although these are our ancestors, it will seem like we are studying a distant planet, inhabited by people with the strangest of habits.  Fortunately, these subjects of our observation give us abundant clues about who they are.  Their art, their writing, their technology, the way they do business, the way they govern
themselves all feed into a picture we will attempt to paint for ourselves each week.  Understanding who they were will help us understand who we are.

Each week you will be given three or four questions pertaining to important topics covered in the materials provided in the question itself, the textbook, the lectures, the other materials provided, and my comments in my Live Session. You choose the one question you like and post a response of 125 words or more.  You also need to respond to another post from one of your fellow students.  This second post should be at least 60 or so words long and should not just agree with or repeat what has been said.

Please always use an example that has not already been used in the discussion.

  • European monarchs followed the example of Louis XIV and one of them is well described in your book, Frederick William of Prussia aka Frederick the Great.  What does  his palace Sans Souci  and what we know about him personally, tell us about the way he saw his world and promoted his power? Frederick the Great was an aggressive monarch who built his kingdom into what would become the German nation.
  • Your book makes the point that, in many ways, Classical music is a reaction against the Rococo and its wild exuberance.  Why did symphonic orchestras form at this time?  What composers used this form to express a new world view?  How does Classical music reflect Enlightenment thinking?
  • The ancient artwork traditions of China and Japan began to enter the European world as European trade became a huge business and cultural exchange.  Europe fell in love with what came to be known as chinoiserie. The reality is that China was an ancient and quite advanced civilization, scientifically far ahead of the West in many ways.  What Europeans saw as exotic artifacts from a mysterious land reflected the many cultural traditions that melded to form Chinese culture in the 18th Century. What are some examples of  chinoiserie and other artifacts of Asian culture that became so popular in Western Europe?  Why were Europeans so enthusiastic about anything Asian?  Why do you think Europeans were so arrogant about their self-conceived superiority?
  • Chapter 26 covers both the American and French Revolutions.  Both proclaim liberty for all but America built slavery into its most important founding document and the French kept the Haitians enslaved until they too fought to free themselves.  Why were slaves so important to both countries? How did slavery become a huge international trade system? How are slavery and racism connected in America?
  • Many of our oldest and most important buildings in America are Neo-Classical in design.  Our nation’s capital was laid out in the midst of this design period.  The documents created by the political leaders of the time were also built on Greek and Roman ideas.  Recent events in Washington make it seem as if this architectural style doesn’t work in 2021.  Strains and stresses in our society tend to indicate that our founding documents might need deep re-examination.  Are we being constrained by following these 200 year old documents? What about them should be changed if anything, to bring about an America where we are all equal and free?  Should we stop using these ancient buildings in exchange for greater security?

Philosophy – Paragraph 2

Instructions

IMPORTANT: You do NOT need to restate the prompt. Dive straight into the problem (I suggest you start by identifying the key issues in the situation). Seriously, don’t waste space with a lengthy introduction. I know what the prompt says since I wrote it – only repeat the details of it if they’re necessary, but avoid summaries.

Instructions: You are to respond to the topic below using the ideas and concepts we have been discussing in this course. Your response should be between 200 and 300 words. You MUST cite something from within the course (textbook, course pages, discussions, etc.) AND another source you find from outside the course (the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Links to an external site.), the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Links to an external site.), another book, a journal – check out our library’s online resources (Links to an external site.), Wikipedia, YouTube, a TV show, etc.) when crafting your response. You might want to write this in another application (Google Docs, Word, Notepad, etc.) and copy and paste it.

Paragraph #2 Topic:

Near the end of World War II, the city of Dresden, Germany was severely damaged when allied forces dropped nearly 4,000 tons of explosives on a 15 square mile area around the city center. The “Church of Our Lady,” built in the first part of the 18th century, had been a symbol of the city and was reduced to rubble. It lay in ruins as a war memorial until 1995 when a number of people decided it was time to rebuild it. They sorted the rubble, salvaged all the useful stones and parts, and used a sophisticated computer program to determine the exact location of the stones when the church last stood in 1945. Using as much of the original parts as they could (and filling in the gaps with new parts) as well as the original plans, they slowly rebuilt the entire church over a 5 year period in the exact same spot that it once stood. Is the “Church of Our Lady” that now stands in Dresden the same Church that stood there in 1750? Why or why not? What makes it the same? Or what makes it not the same? If you say they’re the same, then what are the essential parts of the Church that make it the same? If you say they’re different, then how do the two Churches relate to each other?

Now, let’s apply a little twist: Assume you visit Dresden and you are standing in front of the church looking at it. You close your eyes for five seconds and then open them and see the church again. How do you know you’re looking at the same church that you saw before and after you opened your eyes? Or could it actually be a different church? Why or why not?

(Be sure to make use of the course materials when crafting your response.)

I’m working on a psychology question and need guidance to help me learn

I’m working on a psychology question and need guidance to help me learn. As you learned from last week’s readings, forensic psychology can apply to many areas of the legal system. Narrowly defined forensic psychology professionals conduct evaluations of defendants and appear in court to testify based on their findings. https://academicessly.com/2021/05/08/buacc3721-investment-portfolio-management-report-writing/ However, in reality, the activities of forensic psychology professionals, because of their knowledge of human behavior, might include working in prisons as mental health professionals; working with law enforcement agencies screening applicants; engaging in criminal profiling; or assisting in hostage negotiations, crisis intervention, or in the selection of a suitable jury.As you have seen in the Learning Resources this week, there are forensic psychology subspecialties that include criminal forensic psychology, juvenile forensic psychology, civil forensic psychology, investigative psychology, correctional psychology, police psychology, and military psychology. https://iacademicessay.com/2021/06/06/im-working-on-a-english-writing-question-and-need-an-explanation-to-help-me-lea-21/ Additionally, there are a variety of roles and responsibilities within each subspecialty. Studying and understanding the various roles and responsibilities of a forensic psychology professional within specific subspecialties, will help you to understand the field and identify a subspecialty of forensic psychology you may find most interesting.undefinedTo prepare for this assignment:Review Chapter 1 of the course text, Introduction to Forensic Psychology. Pay particular attention to the subspecialties and roles that fall under the umbrella of forensic psychology.
Review this week’s DVD program, “Practice Areas, Roles, and Responsibilities.” Consider all of the roles, responsibilities, and opportunities pertaining to forensic psychology professional.
Review the article “An Interesting Career in Psychology: Forensic Psychologist” (Pinizzotto) on the APA Online: Law and Psychology Web site and consider the roles of a forensic psychology professional within this specific subspecialty.
Think about the subspecialties of forensic psychology and the various roles within them.
Choose two roles that are of interest to you in one or more of the subspecialties.
Consider how each of the roles you selected contributes to a subspecialty and why..
The assignment (1.5 pages):Describe the two roles you selected. https://getacademicessay.com/6596/topic-for-this-assignment-plant-adaptations-tropicalthis-project-is-designed-t/
Describe the two subspecialties to which the roles belong and contribute.
Explain how each role contributes to the subspecialty you selected and why.
Explain how roles of forensic psychology professionals in general contribute to forensic psychology subspecialties.
Requirements: 1.5 pages, strong to the point

2 separate course assignments?

Assignment 1 Organizational Theory and Behavior (9 slides total)

Unit three CEO of an organization attached below

(Do not combine the two assignment as one)

For the Unit V PowerPoint Presentation, you will continue to work on your course project, and you will present on the ways in which your selected organization will reduce errors in communication.

Start by researching your organization, and determine if they have made an error in communication through an advertisement, consumer policy, or verbal actions to employees. If they have, you will explain that error in your presentation. If not, please research another organization that has, and use this as an example of a situation to avoid.

Continuing in your role as the CEO of the organization you chose in the Unit III Assignment, create a presentation to give to your employees that explains the communication blunders and your solutions to avoid them in the future.

Include the components listed below in your presentation.

  1. If your organization committed a communication blunder, outline the communication error and what went wrong (highlight the shortfalls). If you researched an example, share the example with your organization, and explain what happened and how you can learn from it.
  2. Outline your suggested solution(s) to fix the problem and what processes from Chapter 9 in your textbook can be implemented.
  3. Explain what your organization can learn from this mistake and ways to improve communication in the future.
  4. Support your work with a references slide.

Your completed PowerPoint presentation should include a minimum of seven slides, not counting the title and reference slides. You must reference the textbook at a minimum.

Assignment 2 International management

 1. (200 words response) Some international management experts contend that globalization and national responsiveness are diametrically opposed forces, and that to accommodate one, a multinational must relax its efforts in the other. In what way is this an accurate statement? In what way is it incomplete or inaccurate?

2. (200 words response)  In what way do the concepts of formalization, specialization, and centralization have an impact on MNC organization structures? In your answer, use a well-known firm such as IBM or Ford to illustrate the practical expressions of these three characteristics.

Topic 1: Identification of issue Significant to Nursing Practice I

Planning is the key to successful completion of this course and program-related objectives. The Individual Success Plan (ISP) assignment requires early collaboration with the course faculty and your course preceptor. Students must establish a plan for successful completion of

  1. The required 50 community direct clinical practice experience hours, 50 leadership direct clinical practice hours, and 25 indirect clinical experience hours.
  2. Completion of work associated with program competencies.
  3. Work associated with completion of the student’s capstone project change proposal.

Students will use the “Individual Success Plan” to develop an individual plan for completing practice hours and course objectives. As a part of this process, students will identify the number of hours set aside to meet course goals.

Student expectations and instructions for completing the ISP document are provided in the “NRS-493 Individual Success Plan” resource, located in the Study Materials and in the assignment instructions.

Students should apply concepts from prior courses to critically examine and improve their current practice. Students are expected to integrate scholarly readings to develop case reports that demonstrate increasingly complex and proficient practice.

After the ISP has been developed by the student and approved by the course faculty, students will initiate a preconference with the faculty and preceptor to review the ISP.

Work with your preceptor to perform a needs assessment of the organization and community for your practicum. Review the needs assessment to identify possible project topics. In preparation for the capstone change project proposal, compile a list of three to five possible topics for your project and submit to the assignment instructor in LoudCloud.

Students are required to submit weekly reflective narratives throughout the course that will culminate in a final, course-long reflective journal due in Topic 10. The narratives help students integrate leadership and inquiry into current practice.

This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week students should also explain how they met a course competency or course objective(s).

In each week’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout the course. Journal entries should address one or more of the areas stated below.  In the Topic 10 graded submission, each of the areas below should be addressed as part of the summary submission.

  1. New practice approaches
  2. Interprofessional collaboration
  3. Health care delivery and clinical systems
  4. Ethical considerations in health care
  5. Practices of culturally sensitive care
  6. Ensuring the integrity of human dignity in the care of all patients
  7. Population health concerns
  8. The role of technology in improving health care outcomes
  9. Health policy
  10. Leadership and economic models
  11. Health disparities

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
