The final assignment is to submit a personal family theory paper.

The final assignment is to submit a personal family theory paper.  Please choose the family theory or theories (no more than three) you are most drawn to.  Examine the theoretical principles and how this or these approach(s) fit with who you are as a developing therapist. Discuss evidence-based outcomes that may exist in the peer-reviewed literature for this or these approach(es).  Explore how you think family’s change and how this theory or these theories, coincide with your ideas of change.  Talk about how your theory, or theories, interacts with your concepts of mental health and wellness.  What happens when psychopathology enters the picture and how does this occur? Please comment on how this theory helps you understand, and work with, the multicultural variable you anticipate that you will encounter as a clinician.  Finally, discuss any limitations of this theory.  What are your areas of growth with regard to integrating this theoretical approach(es) into your clinical style?

The paper is to be no more than 8-10 pages in length including the cover page and references page.  It is to be written in APA format, complete with title page, running headers, appropriate reference citations within the text of the paper, and a reference page at the end. The student must consult a minimum of 5 resources that have been published in the last 10 years – over and above the textbooks used in class and the class lecture notes.  These resources should be peer-reviewed articles or academic books written about the theory.  This paper provides the student with an opportunity to integrate counseling theory with clinical practice.  The paper will consist of a discussion of the student’s understanding of a marriage and family theory (or theories), how that theory is applied directly in clinical practice, how to apply the clinical approach with respect to multiculturalism and diversity, and how the student will integrate these in their clinical practice.

apping the Project: Ecological Model of Stress and Coping & Network Analysis

In order to deepen and demonstrate your understanding of the ecological model of stress and coping and of network analysis, you’ll draw from these resources:

Ecological model of stress and coping (handout)

Set of questions on network analysis

Carry over:

  • Consider what you’ve learned from the text about stress and coping. Apply this knowledge to the diagram on the handout: the components of both stress and coping in the context of your social issue.. Apply these components to your community of interest.
  • Consider what you’ve learned from the text about network analysis. Apply this knowledge to the set of questions. Answer these according to your community of interest.

Think about: Consider the best way to organize your points: 1) your notes on the model of stress and coping and 2) your notes responding to the set of network analysis questions.

Create 2 visuals:

  • Clearly annotate the model of stress and coping applied to your social issue and your community of interest.
  • Use your creativity to clearly illustrate what a network analysis might look like in the context of your social issue and specific community of interest.
    • What can you understand from this analysis?

week 6 critical review

Week 6 – Critical Review

Critical Review

The final assignment for this class will be a 10-page critical review of the drug treatment for a psychiatric disorder (broadly defined to include psychological and neurological disorders as well). The review will use peer-reviewed sources to evaluate the current drug treatment modalities for the selected disorder and determine the adequacy of those treatments. The paper will be evaluated on the inclusion of the following information:

Introduction
Evaluate the disorder in terms of symptomatic and behavioral presentation. Include the time, course, and progression of the disorder. Evaluate and explain special features of the disease epidemiology.

Theory
Evaluate the predominant theory or theories regarding the biological basis of the disorder. Explain the disorder in terms of pertinent neurotransmitter and receptor theories and describe the pertinent evidence of their involvement.  Analyze the neurotransmitter systems in terms of the involved receptors and the use receptor agonists and antagonists in the treatment of the disorder receptor. Include information on the anatomic changes to the central nervous system as appropriate to the topic.

Treatment
Evaluate drug therapies for treating the disorder based on the current understanding of the biological basis of the disorder and the corresponding behavioral effects of the disorder. Explain pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in relation to the disorder and corresponding drug treatment. Describe any side effects and adverse effects of the drug treatment and their biological basis, including issues related to contraindications, interactions, drug metabolism, and elimination. In addition, explain risks, benefits, and ethical implications for high-risk and exceptional treatment conditions.

Conclusion
Summarize theories of psychiatric disease as they relate to principles of drug action within the chosen topic. Evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the current theory of the disorder and its treatment and evaluate any controversies regarding ethical and/or risk-benefits perspectives associated with the current treatment. Describe possible areas for future research.

As the field of psychology and other disciplines has continued to expand, opportunities to engage in multiple professional activities have also increased. At the same time, this abundance of opportunities also presents ongoing challenges requiring an understanding of personal limits. To rise above these challenges, we as professionals need to understand their limits and apply this understanding to professional situations that we encounter.

Discuss the situations in which you believe you may now be or could be less competent, situations that could require you to make a professional referral. Discuss how you would make a referral and what you would say to your client. You can create a scenario of your choice with a client in which you need to make this referral. When discussing this scenario, address (1) the background and presentation of the client, (2) your working relationship with the client to date, and (3) why the referral is essential and ethically significant in this scenario. Using the Internet, research your professional code of ethics for examples related to conflicts and the need to refer your client or case out. Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Respond to at least two of your classmates by Day 7.
