Thomas Friedman’s book, The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, contends that “the convergence of technology and events that allowed India, China, and so many other countries to become part of the global supply chain for services and manufacturing, [created] an explosion of wealth in the middle classes of the world’s two biggest nations, giving them a huge new stake in the success of globalization.” He continued by writing that with “this ‘flattening’ of the globe (which) requires us to run faster in order to stay in place… (brings us face to face with the reality that) the world has gotten too small and too fast for human beings and their political systems to adjust in stable manner…”

Share your thoughts with the class about one of the following questions, all of which refer to “the world is flat” quotation. (For more information on Friedman, visit his website at: http://www.thomaslfriedman.com.)

Please complete and answer all 4 questions.

  1. Does the loss of manufacturing jobs and jobs in traditional sectors in the U.S. provide growth opportunities in other areas? Why or why not?
  2. How do you account for the anti-globalization reactions of terrorism?
  3. Is the growth of foreign job markets a threat to American workers? Why or why not?
  4. Are political systems able to maintain stability? Explain.

Racism

1. You have just been hired as a panelist for a news program. You have been chosen as the counterpoint to another panelist named “Mr. A” He feels he is very open-minded and thinks the key to building a multiracial society is to stop talking about race, stop race-based policies like  Affirmative Action that draw more attention to race (and take jobs/slots away from others), and stop having race-based organizations like black fraternities and clubs. Although he professes to be colorblind and not care about race, curiously, he emphasizes having black friends, while having an all-white extended family without any signs of interracial dating or marriage.

When it is your turn to speak, provide counterpoints for at least three of Mr. A’s positions

that:

(a) identify the misinformation on which each is based, and

(b) offer alternative interpretations for the positions he advocates.

2. Identify at least three ways the media perpetuates stereotypes, and identify an example/specific stereotype for each (at least one such example should focus on a non-black minority group.) In addition, discuss the ways in which such stereotypes can be counteracted.  What does social science evidence say about methods that work in countering racism (in media and beyond)?

3.As Latino- and Asian-Americans are the two fastest-growing minority groups, once their totals are added with African-Americans, non-Hispanic whites are expected to become an increasingly smaller proportion of the U.S. Some predict this shift will make us a more multi-racially balanced democracy.  Yet, others expect that a segment of this growth spurt will “become white” as other ethnic groups have in the past; thus maintaining white dominance in the U.S. Which prediction do you think is more likely to happen?  Support your position with at least three points of evidence from the course. Thereafter, discuss the evidence that the “other side” would use to counteract you, and explain why, despite this evidence, you stand by your prediction.

Evaluating Mission Statements

Below is a list of five large and significant organizations. Research each organization and select one as the topic for the final paper:

  • CSX – Transportation industry
  • JBS – Food industry
  • University of Arizona Global Campus (formerly known as Ashford University) – Higher education
  • Nokia – Technology industry
  • Simon Properties Group – Real Estate and Retail

Each organization is unique and has important strategic challenges. Once you select an organization, begin a detailed search to identify the history, industry, mission and vision, values and purpose, the leadership within, and potential competition.

Also, research and locate a news item (within the last 12 to 24 months) that is affecting the company and posing a challenge to its strategy. Challenges come in many different forms and could be positive or negative. You may discover leadership issues, legal or legislative issues, environmental challenges, human resource concerns, product design and research challenges, growth challenges, or possibly financial issues. Keep in mind that the identified challenge will be the core of the strategic review and recommendations developed throughout the paper.

Once your research is complete, prepare Section 1 of the paper. Section 1 must have at a minimum three full pages of APA content (excluding the cover and reference pages). You must include at a minimum three resources that provide qualified information related to the organization. Wikipedia is not a qualified resource.Include the text as a scholarly resource to support theory and concepts related to strategy. During the construction of Section 1, be specific and refrain from making assumptions.  .

  • To complete this assignment, you must address the following:
  • Select an organization.
  • Identify the history, the industry, the mission and vision, the values and purpose, the leadership within, and potential competition.
  • Research and locate a new item that is affecting the company and posing a challenge to its strategy.

Feminism

FIRST, explain in your own words how Women’s Studies and Feminism are related. How do they differ?

THEN, discuss what you believe are the most important achievements of feminism, and which goals you think feminism should focus on today.

Refer to at least three learning resources assigned for this week in your response (these may include last week’s course module reading “What Is Women’s Studies?“) and provide specific examples from the reading, the news, or your own life. Some questions to consider:

  • How has feminism changed the way we interact with one another?
  • How has feminism changed our understanding of gender roles?
  • What are the most positive changes to arise from feminist activism in our society?
  • How does everyone, not only women, benefit from these achievements?
  • Where has feminism fallen short?
  • Have all women been able to enjoy the successes of the women’s movement equally?
  • bell hooks presents a number of criticisms of mainstream feminism. Her article was written in the mid-90s. Which of her ideas do you agree with? Has the feminist movement addressed any of her concerns?
  • Where do you believe the feminist movement should focus next?

1.

Organizations take on many initiatives that they want their employees to accept and to work towards achieving. However, many of these initiatives fail because the employees have no personal connection or accountability. For an organization to transform its culture into one that is conducive for diversity and inclusion, employees at all levels of the company must understand that they are personally accountable for transforming the culture to meet the diversity and inclusion needs. Accountability leads to a psychological ownership that helps the desired results to be reached.

Discuss how you might hold employees personally accountable for the transformation of the organization. What would be specific goals or metrics that you would set for the employees, and what tools and resources would you provide to help them reach their personal accountability goals to transform the organization’s culture?

By completing this learning activity, you will be better prepared to recommend options for improving an organization’s diversity and inclusion practices (Unit Learning Outcome 8.2).

2.

You have likely heard these slogans before:

  • We’re stronger as us.
  • We’re stronger as allies.
  • We’re greater when we’re equal.

However, for many organizations, they are just slogans and not actions that are taken seriously. As you reflect upon the concepts that you have learned in this course, create your own slogan that you would use to describe the importance of diversity and inclusion in your organization. In addition, discuss how the slogan would be used to create action and strategies for creating an organization that focuses on diversity and inclusion.

Completing this learning activity will better prepare you to explore ways of incorporating workplace inclusion strategies for underrepresented groups (Unit Learning Outcome 7.1).

Discussion Board only.  keep them number.  150 words for both.

Week 3 pharmacology

The practice of using herbal supplements dates back thousands of years. Today, there is a renewal in the use of herbal supplements among American consumers. However, herbal supplements are not for everyone. In fact, some herbal products may cause problems for people treatments for chronic ailments. Because they are not subject to scrutiny by the FDA or other governing agencies, the use of herbal supplements is controversial.

Herbal supplements are products made from plants for use in the treatment and management of certain diseases and medical conditions. Many prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines are also made from plant derivatives. These products contain only purified ingredients and, unlike herbal supplements, are closely regulated by the FDA. Herbal supplements may contain entire plants or plant parts. Herbal supplements come in all forms: dried, chopped, powdered, capsule, or liquid, and can be used in various ways.

Please address the following:

  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of dietary supplements, including adverse reactions, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, and specific laboratory issues that may arise from using these products.
  • Discuss the position of the FDA and other governmental agencies on over the counter herbal supplements. Support your post with at least 2 evidenced-based guidelines published within the last 5 years.
