Problem:Coca-Cola has alway had a few ongoing problems to deal with, but the pandemic has made some of these way more prominent.  The first area is tied into our weakness of product diversification. Almost half of all Coca-Cola’s business is from away-from-home sales. This means the majority of their sales came from restaurants, sports arenas and vending machines. With most public places still at limited capacity or closed, Coca-Cola’s quarterly sales had the biggest drop in over 3 decades. Although some of their healthier drink options were able to pick up a little of the slack, Coca-Cola is still hurting more than some of their competitors because they never entered the snack industry which is profiting off people staying inside. Public mandated shelter-in-place legislations are not the only issue slowing Coca-Cola sales. With a direct correlation between Covid complications and health issues, more and more people and countries are looking at soda as something that should not be consumed regularly. Coca-Cola’s other problem is based around their health concerns weakness. Latin America is one of Coca-Cola’s biggest markets, so it is bad news that some latin countries are starting to pass new laws to combat obesity.  In 2016 Chile passed very strict laws on how and where junk food could be advertised to kids. As a result sugary drink sales dropped over 20 percent. With a new motivation to become healthier to stop Covid deaths; Mexico has passed a junk food label law. This would require health warnings on all products high in sugar, sodium or saturated fat. This is a major problem because Mexico drinks more Coke per person than any other country. Even with many countries trying to get Mexico to postpone the law, it is still set to go into effect this year. These new health laws passed by countries could have a devastating effect on Coca-Cola’s global sales.

Defining intelligence is an area that remains open to interpretation. According to Sternberg and Sternberg (2012), intelligence refers to a person’s ability to acquire knowledge from their experiences and their environment. They further note that this can require adaptability to adjust to different contexts, including social or cultural (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2012). Superior intelligence is often determined when an individual excels in particular areas including: “attention, working memory, reasoning, problem solving, decision making, and concept formation” (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2012, p. 17). Sternberg and Sternberg (2012) note that understanding the cognitive processes behind these functions aid in determining the individualism behind intelligence in humans.

Another way to define intelligence is to consider the multiple intelligences as outlined first by Gardner in 1983. Gardner suggested that intelligence could be broken down into categories such as verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, musical, emotional, spatial etc. (Furnham, 2009). His list of intelligences grew in number and since him, others have gone on to label more areas of intelligence, the number growing from seven to more than 20, depending on the researcher (Furnham, 2009).

Emotional intelligence is more difficult to study than other areas, such as mathematical or linguistic, resulting in uncertainty regarding the best manner in which to measure it. Due to the argument between intelligence testing needing to be timed tests with correct/incorrect answers and self-report testing being an adequate measure, emotional intelligence testing remains filled with subjective perception, making it difficult to quantify and assess (Furnham, 2009).

I believe that emotional intelligence must be acknowledged as an area of intelligence, allowing for this measurement to fuel overall understanding of human individualities, strengths, and weaknesses. As discussed by Mayer, Salovey and Caruso (2008), individuals have different information processing abilities – this is outside of their ability to gather or collect information.

For example, someone may be highly skilled in gathering facts, and understanding scientific information as it is presented. However, this same person may not understand the nuances of who or how this information is presented. Fact-gathering is only one part of understanding the information that is presented. We know that human communication is not only about the words being communicated. Humans use a wide array of communication tools such as voice inflection, facial expression, gestures, tone etc. to communicate their message (Schooler & Anderson, 2017). Emotional intelligence is what allows a person to grasp not just the words being presented but to also acknowledge those other elements that can dramatically alter the meaning of the words.

Anecdotally, as I watch my toddler grow, develop and begin to understand the world around him I am watching as his different areas of intelligence grow and change. Factual understanding seems to come first: he’s learning words, shapes, colours, and routines. Notably, his ability to adequately share and understand his feelings and emotions is (understandably) still a work in progress. Just like any other area of intelligence, emotional intelligence needs to be taught and nurtured and there are repercussions when it is not. In areas I have worked in I have seen the impact of underdeveloped or stunted emotional intelligence; oftentimes this results in poor communication skills, assumptions of threat or attack, and an inability to appropriately respond to stressful situations, particularly in men and boys. Too often there is too little focus on helping boys develop their emotional intelligence (or even purposefully focusing energy away from natural emotional intelligence development) and we can see the results of this in an abundance of un- and under-addressed mental health needs in the male population.

3 – Visualization Tools

Scenario

You are the facility manager for EnVision, a high-tech vehicle maker located in Atlanta. This new company designs, manufactures, and sells electric vehicles and charging units. EnVision’s unique designs, technical prowess, and limited competition has placed them in the enviable position of having a high demand for their line of products. This demand has generated over a billion dollars in pre-sale orders, and a new manufacturing facility is required to meet customer’s needs. The firm’s CEO, Mark Hammel, has asked you to assist him in selecting a new site that will accommodate a new state-of-the-art facility.

As a responsible facility manager, you know that this site selection process is going to require presentations of data and other information, and that there will be tools necessary to do this. The CEO, Mark Hammel has asked you to conduct a study identifying the best visualization tools that fit the firm’s current and future presentation needs. The tools you recommend need to have a short learning curve, adequate features and be able to be acquired at a reasonable cost. Your initial investigation has narrowed your selection down to ten data visualization tools:

  • Zoho Reports
  • Sisense
  • Domo
  • Microsoft Power BI
  • Tableau Desktop
  • Google Analytics
  • Chartio

Statistics Discussion Question

This video explains what the normal distribution is and gives examples of normal distributions in the natural and social world. The distribution of the number of heads thrown on 20 coins, the weight of ants, and the age of marathon runners are all approximately normal distributions. Thus, the normal distribution is what often happens when we chart a large number of random events.

Respond to one of the following options in your initial post, citing at least one specific credible source in support. Question on credible sources? See the Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.).

Option 1

Option 2

  • State an example of a variable that follows a normal distribution.
  • State one way knowing this is useful in your professional or personal life.
  • Briefly elaborate on your example.

Option 3

  • Identify the minimum number of data points needed to generate a normal distribution.
  • Create a data set of that size, and show that it meets the first three conditions for a Normal Distribution in section 5.1 on page 164 of the text.

Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length.

MIDTERM EXAM CASE #1 Maria is a sedentary, 68-year-old woman who is overweight. She complains that her hands and feet are always cold, and she tires quickly when cleaning the house. At her most recent visit to her doctor, her blood pressure was 184/98 mm Hg. She has edema around her ankles and legs, and her physician is concerned about an echocardiogram that indicates Maria has an enlarged heart. 1. Identify and discuss two reasons why Maria will have tissue ischemia. How, specifically, might this lead to hypoxia? (10 points) 2. What two early and reversible changes occur to tissue cells when they are hypoxic? (5 points) 3. What specific type of cellular adaptation has taken place in Maria’s enlarged heart? What made you come to this conclusion? (5 points) 4. Predict why Maria’s heart has become enlarged. Why doesn’t this enlargement give her the same cardiac strength and endurance as a well-trained athlete? (10 points) CASE #2 You are working in a community health center and caring for a 5-year-old child who was diagnosed as having a right ear infection. When collecting the history, the mother states the child has had a fever of 102°F for 2 days, has been irritable, and complained of feeling tired. The child has been drinking fluids well but not eating. The physician describes the tympanic membrane as erythematous, bulging with fluid levels, and dull. You collect the following vital signs: Temperature 102 Pulse. 110, and Respiration rate 18. 1. Which of the clinical manifestations given are associated with a localized inflammatory response? What physiological factors are responsible for the development of these manifestations? (15 POINTS) 2. If the physician ordered a complete blood count, what would you expect to see if there is a bacterial infection? (10 POINTS) CASE #3 Amanda is an 18-year-old with anorexia nervosa. She was recently admitted to an eating disorders clinic with a BMI of 13.9, and although she was a voluntary patient, she was reluctant about the treatment. She was convinced she was overweight because her clothes felt tight on her. She complained that even her hands and feet were fat. Her physician explained that a protein in her blood was low. It was further explained that, as difficult as it may be to believe, eating a normal healthy diet would make the “fat hands and feet” go away. 1. What protein do you suspect the nurse was referring to? How would a deficiency in this protein contribute to edema? (15 points) 2. Because of her weakened condition, Amanda was moved around the ward in a wheelchair when she wasn’t on bed rest. Explain how this might affect her edematous tissues. (10 points) CASE #4 Leona is 52 years old and smokes. She is also overweight and has atherosclerosis. When she was given a 2-week vacation from work, she packed up her bags and flew from Minnesota to Sydney, Australia for the trip she always wanted to take. Unfortunately, just 3 days after she arrived, she was hospitalized when her left calf became inflamed, causing her considerable pain. Compression ultrasonography revealed popliteal vein thrombosis. Doppler color flow imaging depicted absent flow in the area. 1. Explain, using you knowledge of hypercoagulability, what condition does Leona have and why was the trip to Australia a contributing factor to Leona’s condition? Why was Leona already at risk for this condition? (10 points) 2. How does Leona’s atherosclerosis affect platelet function? Conversely, what is the effect of increased platelet activity on the development of atherosclerosis? (5 points) 3. Compare and contrast how atherosclerosis and immobility promote changes in blood coagulation. (5 points) 4. When Leona was in the hospital, she received heparin therapy. Explain why this course of action was taken to treat her condition? (5 points)

Case Study: Introduction to Qualitative Research

(line 1) When I was bathing, I found a hard spot in my breast. I think my heart stopped and I (line 2) began sobbing. I felt as if I was dying and I started crying [participant has tears in her eyes]. (line 3) Finally, I told myself that it could be nothing and made myself finish bathing. It was late at night so I (line 4) knew that if I called the doctor’s office, there would be no answer. So, I waited…that was a (line 5) miserable night. My husband was gone and I was all alone…..except for God. I fell asleep praying to (line 6) God that what I had found would end up being nothing. I woke up the next morning, feeling like (line 7) I had been beaten because I hurt in every part of my body…where my heart was supposed to be (line 8) [participant places hand over her heart] felt like a big hole. I called the doctor’s office at 8 am (line 9) and told the person who answered that I had to see the doctor. She said I could have an (line 10) appointment in 2 weeks. I told her that I had found a lump and I thought I would go mad if I had to wait (line 11) 2 weeks. She put me on hold and went to see what could be done. I sat and prayed and waited. (line 12) When she came back on the line, she said that the nurse practitioner would see me at 11 am. (line 13) I hung up and realized that it was Monday and I was supposed to be at work. I called the (line 14) office and told the manager that I had an emergency and could not come in today. I could not (line 15) bring myself to say what the emergency was….I was not ready for anyone to know. If someone (line 16) else knew, it might be real and I wanted it all to be a bad dream that would be over soon. (line 17) I don’t remember what I did until 10 am when it was time to leave for the doctor’s clinic. I (line 18) arrived early and sat in the waiting room turning the pages of a magazine….it must have been (line 19) an hour before the nurse came to the waiting room and called my name. (line 20) I sat down in the exam room and began to cry. The nurse practitioner had not come in (line 21) yet….she was surprised to see me crying when she opened my door. The first words out of my (line 22) mouth were that my mother had died last year from breast cancer and I found a lump in my (line 23) breast. The next thing I remember I was being given a sedative. The nurse had gotten the (line 24) number of a friend from my telephone and called my friend to come to the doctor’s office to pick (line 25) me up. I knew the friend I told them to call was a kind soul and she would not ask a lot of (line 26) questions but drop what she was doing to come. (line 27) The doctor came in when I was drifting in and out of sleep on the table. My breast was (line 28) uncovered and the nurse had washed and washed it to get it all ready. I could not hold my eyes (line 29) open….I was so sleepy…but I wanted her to cover my breast. I felt naked and did not want (line 30) everyone coming in and out to see my breast. I must have fallen asleep because when I woke up, (line 31) there was a bandage on my breast and it hurt so bad. The nurse said I could go…..my friend was (line 32) here to take me home…I could not think…and she helped me up and led me to where my friend (line 33) was waiting…I had tears running down my face….I could not seem to stop crying. My friend (line 34) took my hand and led me to her car….just then I realized I drove my car and had no way of (line 35) getting it home. She said not to worry…she would take care of it. (line 36) At home, my friend asked if I had called my husband…I started crying again….how would I (line 37) ever tell him…I did not even know the diagnosis yet. I knew he would be so worried and rush (line 38) home…but we needed his job. I said I would wait until I knew something…then I thought how (line 39) mad my husband would be that I had not called. But I knew he would worry and be driving (line 40) home all worried and might get in a crash…I would never be able to stand that. (line 41) The medicine the doctor gave me was very strong and all I wanted to do was sleep. I (line 42) woke up and it was dark in my room and my husband was sitting on my bed. I asked him how he got (line 43) there and he said my friend had called and said I needed him…I started crying again…I thought (line 44) all my tears were gone but they kept coming…(line 45) I must have fallen asleep again because I woke up when the telephone rang. My husband (line 46) answered and handed the phone to me. It was the doctor. He tried to be nice but I knew it was (line 47) bad news….he said I should come in the morning to the hospital so they could run some more (line 48) tests…I was glad for the medicine the doctor gave me for pain…I hung up and took another pill. (line 49) I was too tired to think and just wanted to cry.

Discussion

When conduction an interview for a patient with dysmenorrhea, it is essential to ask personal questions regarding sexual life, like how many partners the patient has. In addition, we should ask about the menstrual cycles, what medications the patient takes for abdominal cramping, how is the pain, how is the bleeding if is any, what birth control the patient is taking, history of chronic or acute diseases, how many pregnancies, and how the pregnancies were.

Patients with dysmenorrhea can presents with difficult or painful menstruation, pain during intercourse, bleeding between cycles or after intercourse, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition to suprapubic tenderness and an increase in the uterus size.

After conducting the interview, should do a physical exam. We should also order a Human chorionic gonadotropin, a complete blood count, a pelvic ultrasound, and a thyroid-stimulating hormone. Should do a pregnancy test because some pregnancies can cause heavy bleeding, a complete blood count because bleeding can cause iron deficit anemia, the ultrasound can detect intracavitary abnormalities, and a thyroid-stimulating test because thyroid problem is sometimes the cause fatigue and bowel symptoms.

The primary diagnosis is dysmenorrhea because of the painful periods, heavy bleeding, and tenderness over the suprapubic area. The secondary diagnoses are adenomyosis, after all, the patient complains of menorrhagia, Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease because the patient presents with lower abdominal pain, and Fibroids because of the pain and changes in menstruation.

The pain during the menstrual cycle can be treated with Ibuprofen which is the gold standard anti-inflammatory treatment for dysmenorrhea; we can also use combined oral contraceptive pills to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Other treatments can include acupuncture, acupressure, and superficial needling. At this point, no referral is needed, but the patient should have follow-up visits, and she should be encouraged to report any change in her medical condition.
