#week6discussion

  • Discussion OverviewIn this week’s discussion, share how you plan to contribute to your field and the welfare of your clients after you graduate and begin your work as a psychologist.

  • What You Need to KnowThroughout your orientation and first course experience, you were provided with strategies and resources to support your success as a graduate learner and professional in the field of psychology. To wrap up the course, read the following article:
    • Payne, D. A., & Johnson, J. M. (2005). Succeeding in graduate school online: Tips from successful students. College Student Journal, 39(1), 117–128.
    • This article provides additional strategies and resources for ensuring your success as you move forward to the next course in your program and beyond.
      Continuing Your Professional Development
Throughout the course, the importance of locating, evaluating, and applying research in both your professional practice and your work as a graduate learner was stressed. To stay current in the research and literature related to your passions and interests in psychology, complete the following:
    • Use the Journal Alerts page of the Psychology Library Research Guide to learn how to set up a journal alert for the important journals relevant to your interests in psychology. See the specialization tabs for links to individual important journals in your specialization.
    • Retake the Library Research Knowledge Assessment to see how you are developing proficiency in research and information literacy skills and to identify additional support for continuing your competency in this area.
    • Competency Reflection
Throughout the course, you worked toward developing the following professional competencies:
    1. Analyze the role of the practitioner-scholar model in guiding professional development.
    2. Evaluate psychological literature in terms of reliability, credibility, ethics, and value.
    3. Analyze the functions, responsibilities, and ethics required of a psychology professional.
    4. Apply critical thinking and effective decision making.
    5. Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology.
    6. Take some time to reflect on how you have grown in your knowledge and ability to perform these competencies in the past 10 weeks. Also, consider how you will take these competencies forward with you and apply them in your future courses.
      Master’s Capstone and Integrative Project
At the end of your program, you will be asked to complete an integrative project, which will provide you with an opportunity to bring all the learning and mastery you will acquire throughout your academic program journey into a single artifact. While you are not required to do any work toward your capstone in this course, keep it in mind as you progress through your academic journey. Write down ideas for potential topics, save journal articles that might be helpful for a literature review, and pay attention to the areas of study that excite you. Doing just a little bit to help prepare yourself as you move through your program will help you when it comes time to work on your integrative project at the end of your program.
      Capella Career Center
As you wrap up this course, it is a good time for you to reflect on how you will apply your knowledge on the job and how you can talk about it professionally. Possible opportunities could include performance review conversations, promotion proposals, salary negotiations, résumé accomplishment statements, interview responses, and professional networking conversations.
Here are some of the great Career Center resources available to you:
  • Write Your Discussion Post
Taking Action and Moving Forward as a Capella Graduate Learner
Congratulations! You have successfully completed your first course in your program! You are now one step closer to transforming your vision as a psychology practitioner-scholar into a reality. This week reflect on how far you have come in your understanding of the psychology profession and the actions you will need to take to make a contribution in the field.
For this discussion create a post using a minimum of 50 words and reflect on how far you have come in your understanding of the psychology profession and actions you will take to make a contribution in the field. Your goal is to enthusiastically share something you’ve learned with your peers, apply it to real life, and make your pin informative, concise, and engaging to your readers. Be creative!

    • Share how you plan to contribute to your field and the welfare of your clients after you graduate and begin your work as a psychologist.
    • Share ways you envision yourself giving back to your community beyond practicing in the field.
    • Share how you might be able to apply the knowledge learned in this course to your life, personally or professionally.
    • If applicable, include resources to support your post by providing links to credible or scholarly articles, videos, images, or other web resources.
    • You may also create a slide show or use audio or video as your discussion post.
    • Label your post with a hashtag (e.g., #Week10) so that others can sort posts by the week’s topic.
    • Do not create your post as a reply to this pinned post. Instead, use Yellowdig’s Create option to create a new post.
    • Response Guidelines
Using a minimum of 30 words, respond to one or more posts posted by your fellow learners:
    • What were your opinions of the plans and dreams your classmates discussed?
    • How were the contributions of your classmates similar to your own?
    • Can you think of an example of how the knowledge learned in this course could explain things you have observed or experienced?

WHAT IS DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY?

In this lesson we learned some key differences between digital and analog photography and some applications of each.

This unit has two separate tracks of projects depending on your access to a digital camera.

If you have access to a digital camera (even if you don’t own one you may borrow one from a friend or family member) we STRONGLY recommend that you take some digital photos. There is no substitute for actually creating digital art. You will surprise yourself with some of the great photos you capture.

If you have access to a digital camera, follow track 1. We recommend that you take a look at the other projects in track 1 for this unit as they build on each other and you can work at your own pace.

TRACK 1

Find a digital camera and get comfortable

The first step is to find a digital camera that you can borrow to use for this unit. Don’t worry about the technical quality of the camera. For our purposes, even an inexpensive camera can help you take great photos. Ask to also borrow the camera manual. If the original is not available, there’s still a good chance you’ll be able to find it online. The manual will highlight some of the camera’s best features that you might have trouble accessing on your own. Get comfortable with the camera by practicing. Take some photos in various settings.

Write any questions or discussions you have.

TRACK 2

Identify quality photos online

If you don’t have access to a digital camera or choose not to participate in taking photos you can search the web for five photos that you believe have artistic merit.

Post the photos and write a few lines under each photo about why you think it is an example of good quality photography.

Assignment Guidelines:

REMEMBER: You have to follow one track of assignments; either shoot photos or write about photos. You can not mix the tracks.

Submission Requirements:

Track 1: A log of questions or comments about the process of familiarizing yourself with a digital camera.

Track 2: Photos and a description of why they appeal to you.

When submitting written assignments please remember to:

  1. Submit the assignment question(s) and your responses.
  2. Proof read for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  3. Remember to use complete sentence structure.
  4. Paragraphs need to have a minimum of six sentences.

Upload your Digital Photography project for the track that you chose to explore.

Critical thinking and learn assignment (Deadline April 30 @ 2:30pm) Text yes if you can meet the deadline

Student Directions: Complete the following Program Learning Outcome Assessment Item and turn the responses in by the deadline . Your answers must be typed using  Times New Roman, size 12 font and doubled spaced.

Read the following letter to the editor. Then answer the following questions about it.

  1. Dear Editor:  I am responding to the letter you published last week by the Reverend Amos Matthews, who correctly notes that 70 percent of African-American high school students in San Francisco will complete this year with a mean average grade of D-plus.  According to Rev. Matthews, this abysmal performance is mostly the fault of the school board.
  2. In other words, African-American school children are victims, and as such not responsible for their actions. I am African-American and I’m tired of being portrayed as a victim.
  3. Parents are failing their children by not being involved, by not taking an interest.  Leadership is needed and that leadership begins at home.  There needs to be a comprehensive evaluation not of the school system, but rather of African-American parents who choose not to be involved.
  4. Many Asians students who face language and cultural barriers seem to perform well in school. The problems they face are equal to if not greater than problems faced by African-American students.
  5. Each morning while waiting to board the bus I see many students going to school.  Unfortunately, 60 to 70 percent of the African-American students do not have books.  I can only assume that they are not prepared for what awaits them in school.
  6. I don’t blame the teachers or the school board for these students’ lack of preparation; rather, I blame the parents who would allow their children to come home without books.  The parents of these children have failed them and this is where you need to concentrate your efforts, Rev. Matthews.
  • Jay Smith

Test Questions (10 points each): You can earn up to 50 points.

  1. State the conclusion or inference of Rev. Matthews that Jay is refuting.
  2. What facts does Rev. Matthews base his conclusion on?
  3. In Paragraph 2, what does Jay interpret the reverend’s conclusion to mean?
  4. In your own words, write the conclusion (main idea or thesis) of Jay’s argument.
  5. List two (2)  reasons Jay gives to support this conclusion.

Chapter 7 had many good points of view in my opinion. The one that stood out to me the most was while helping advocate for a particular marginalized group, do not think you are a savior. When someone chooses to educate for a particular group it is best to be an ally. Expressing that you are a savior is another way of putting yourself above someone as oppose to being on the same level.

This chapter has enlightened me in the aspect that I particularly have so much growing to do when it comes to educating myself in becoming a leader of equity. While I believe myself to be excepting of all people, I still have plenty of knowledge to gain when it comes to being an ally. I plan to continue to grow after this class, so that I can be a leader both to my students, colleagues, and community.

The text from this chapter really helped me see that continuing to educate yourself on a particular subject matter is beneficial. Even if you think you know and act in a way you seem fit, does not mean it is the proper way. For example, what is the correct terminology for a specific group of individuals? By using the proper terms, this shows understanding and compassion for the individual. Using proper pronouns for example.

My question to the class is what did this chapter help you realize about yourself and  how you deemed yourself as a leader of equity for all?

Solutions (Due in 24hrs)

Introduction

Last week, you determined the root cause(s) of the problem you are trying to resolve for your final paper. As a reminder, the decision you are working on is the one that you selected in week two.

This week, you will determine the solution(s) for your decision. Review the analysis tools that were covered this week. Be sure to review the resources provided on this week’s overview. Also, read the narrative on the lecture page.

Instructions

Select two of the analysis tools that were presented in this week’s overview and lecture. Provide a detailed explanation of how each tool is used (use separate paragraphs for each tool).

Also, discuss a time when you have used each tool for a business-related decision. In addition, explain how the tools were helpful for you when making those decisions. There should be a thorough explanation for each tool. Also, use separate paragraphs for each tool.

If you have not used one (or both) of the tools, explain how you could have used them. For the business-related problem that you are discussing, what did you do instead of using an analysis tool? If you had used, analysis tools, would the outcome have been better? Why? Your answers should be substantive to properly address the questions.

In addition, discuss which analysis tool you will likely use for your final paper and why you chose that tool. Your answer should be included in a separate paragraph.

Your assignment should be at least 1.5 pages in length (single spaced) excluding resources. Use one-inch margins and a standard font size (11-12).
