Touchstone 2.1: Evaluate a Source

Touchstone 2.1: Evaluate a Source

ASSIGNMENT: For this essay, you will select one of the sources you have found through your preliminary research about your research topic. Which source you choose is up to you; however, it should be substantial enough that you will be able to talk about it at length, and intricate enough that it will keep you (and your reader) interested.

In order to foster learning and growth, all essays you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any recycled work will be sent back with a 0, and you will be given one attempt to redo the Touchstone.

The introduction of this paper will involve introducing the source: Provide the author, the title, and the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)

You will then go on to evaluate the source on two levels:

  1. Credibility: Using the information in this unit as a guide, evaluate the source’s authenticity and reliability. Look at all the information that you can find about the source to establish the author’s (or sponsor’s) trustworthiness.
  2. Usefulness: Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level. Determine what the source’s purpose (thesis) is, and how it arrives at that goal. Examine its value to you and the project you are working on. How will it help you prove your own points? How might it come in handy to back up a claim (or address a counter-claim)?

Finally, you will include a conclusion which shows your final assessments on both counts.

A. Assignment Guidelines

DIRECTIONS: Refer to the list below throughout the writing process. Do not submit your Touchstone until it meets these guidelines.

1. Source Identification

The introduction of this paper will be introducing the source:

❒ Have you provided the author’s name?❒ Have you provided the source title?❒ Have you provided the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)?

2. Source Evaluation

❒ Have you provided a judgment on the source’s credibility?❒ Have you used specific examples from the source to illustrate your judgment on credibility?❒ Have you provided a judgment on the source’s usefulness?❒ Have you used specific examples from the source to illustrate your judgment on usefulness?

3. Reflection

❒ Have you answered all reflection questions thoughtfully and included insights, observations, and/or examples in all responses?
❒ Are your answers included on a separate page below the main assignment?

B. Reflection Questions

DIRECTIONS: Below your assignment, include answers to all of the following reflection questions.

  1. What types of questions did you ask yourself when evaluating the credibility and usefulness of your source? (2-3 sentences)
  2. How do you feel this evaluation practice will help you as you continue to move through the research process? (2-3 sentences)

An Introduction to TOWS Analysis

(from getlucidity.com)

What is a TOWS Analysis?

A TOWS Analysis is an extension of the SWOT analysis you completed that identifies your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats but then goes further in looking to match up the Strengths with Opportunities and the Threats with Weaknesses. It allows for you to take action from the analysis.

Adding the relationship between the internal (SW) and external factors (OT) of your SWOT makes TOWS is an obvious next step. The main purpose of a TOWS Analysis is to:

  • Reduce threats
  • Take advantage of opportunities
  • Exploit strengths
  • Remove weaknesses

Strengths to Opportunities: The S-O focuses around how you can exploit your strengths in order to respond to the potential opportunities in the market.

Strengths to Threats: The S-T examines how strengths can be used to mitigate or remove the threats to the business, and in some cases look at how threats can be transformed to opportunities.

Weaknesses to Opportunities: The W-O can be the hardest consideration, as it doesn’t always come naturally. Consider how your opportunities can remove your weaknesses.

Weaknesses to Threats: The W-T highlights how weaknesses can play into, develop or enhance the threats of the business.

How do you make the most out of TOWS?

While no preparation is required for a TOWS beyond some knowledge of the internal and external environment you operate in, it is helpful to have knowledge of:

  • Advice/input from alumni with your degree/major, employers in your industry
  • Latest news and trends in your industry
  • Job market news
  • Positive & negative supervisor/faculty/group member/customer feedback

Part I: The TOWS Process

Step 1 – Complete a SWOT

  • Before you can complete a TOWS, you must have an updated SWOT.

Step 2 – Identify The Actions

Now it’s time to begin asking questions that will give you clear actions. (Not every part of your SWOT will link to every other part – that’s ok.)

Strengths & Opportunities

The relationship between your internal strengths and external opportunities looks at how to take advantage of the opportunities using your strengths. Compare each strength against each opportunity and ask yourself:

  • Can this strength be used to take advantage of the opportunity?
  • What actions do we need to take to make use of the strength?

Strengths & Threats

Avoiding or mitigating the threats is crucial to success. Take a look at each strength and consider them against each threat. Ask yourself:

  • Can this strength reduce or remove this threat?
  • What do we need to do to remove or reduce this threat?
  • Is it a priority?

Weaknesses & Opportunities

At first glance it may seem unusual to map a weakness to an opportunity, but the link is as important as the other relationships. Taking the same approach, go through each weakness and compare it to each opportunity considering…

  • Does this weakness prevent or risk this opportunity?
  • Should I address the weakness?
  • What actions do I need to take to remove the weakness?

Weaknesses & Threats

This isn’t a cheery section – look at the weaknesses and the threats, both are risks to your desired professional outcomes. Ask yourself…

  • Which relate to each other?
  • Are there weaknesses that result in threats?
  • Which elements should be addressed?

Step 3 – Prioritize & Assign Actions

Once you’ve been through each relationship, you’ll have a list of defined actions. Place them into a priority order based on your needs and desired outcomes.

Part II: Submit in Canvas

Provide your answers to the following in Canvas:

  1. Strengths-Opportunities: How will you use strengths to take advantage of opportunities?
  2. Strengths-Threats: How will you use strengths to remove threats?
  3. Weaknesses-Opportunities: Which weaknesses hold you back? What do you plan to do to mitigate or remove them?
  4. Weaknesses-Threats: What threats can be removed? How will you do that?
  5. Of the actions you listed above, which are your top 5 priorities?

Module 12: Leadership, Management, and Organizational Effectiveness

Module 12: Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking: Authentic Leadership (120 points)

Authentic leadership focuses on leadership that is genuine and real. Whether something is genuine and real may likely be in the mind of the individual evaluating it or experiencing it.

  • Examine the usefulness of authentic leadership in organizations by identifying research that supports or refutes authentic leadership as a determinant of organizational or individual success.
  • Identify elements of authentic leadership. Describe the behavioral elements that one might objectively see in an authentic leader.
  • Include the role of emotional intelligence in authentic leadership.
  • Identify a nationally or internationally recognizable, currently living business figure who might be described as an authentic leader and justify your selection of that individual.
  • Next, critically evaluate your authentic leadership skills in relation to the behavioral elements and emotional intelligence you identified as important. Identify any areas for personal growth as a result of this examination.

Directions:

  • Write an essay that includes an introduction paragraph, the essay’s body, and a conclusion paragraph to address the assignment’s guide questions. Do not address the questions using a question-and-answer format.

Your well-written paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Be 3-5 pages in length, which does not include the title and reference pages, which are never a part of the content minimum requirements.
  • Use Saudi Electronic University academic writing standards and APA style guidelines.
  • Support your submission with course material concepts, principles, and theories from the textbook and at least two current, scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles. Current articles are those published in the last five years.
  • It is strongly encouraged that you submit all assignments to the Turnitin Originality Check prior to submitting it to your instructor for grading. If you are unsure how to submit an assignment to the Originality Check tool, review the Turnitin Originality Check–Student Guide for step-by-step instructions.

In advance of submission, review the grading rubric to see how you will be graded for this assignment.

Suppose that you want to optimize a website for search engines. Your client is a car dealer located in the USA.  Answer all questions below, one at a time. Please number your responses (1a, 1b,2,3,4, 5, and 6). Each question is worth 5 marks (6 X 5). Make sure to provide a full answer/explanation, but you can keep your answers SHORT in the interest of time.

1) After interviewing your client, and based on the content on their website, you have just created a shortlist of the following phrases for SEO:

Car dealer
car dealership
car sales near me
best car dealer

a) You now need to identify which of those four phrases would be the best phrase for the SEO of the home page. Conduct quick keyword research, and list the results of your research below. Based on your analysis, which phrase would you recommend? Why? Which keyword tool would you use?

b) Suggest any other phrase(s) that might work well for the SEO of the home page. Explain why.

2) Based on your phrase chosen in the previous step, create the SEO table for the home page. Upload the SEO table here or copy/paste it in the box below.

3) Assume that you also want to optimize the client’s contact us page for the phrase “Car dealer in Seattle”. Fill out the SEO table for the given phrase/page. Upload the SEO table here or copy/paste it in the box below.

4) Suppose that you now want to add more incoming links to your website. Describe the tool that you would use to assess the current number of your incoming links. Also, describe the strategies that you would use to increase the number of your incoming links.

5) Suppose that you now want to add lots of content on the client’s website so you can use the “long tail principle” for SEO.  Describe your strategy.

6) Assume that you have also run a PPC campaign at the same time.

a) How would you evaluate the success of your SEO project? (describe one or two key metrics or tools that you would use)
b) How would you evaluate the success of your PPC campaign? (describe one or two key metrics or tools that you would use)

Corrective Action

Write a 1-paragraph scenario in which you identity problem behavior in one of your direct reports. THE BEHAVIOR IS CONSISTENTLY BEING TARDY TO WORK. After you have written this scenario, follow the steps below on taking corrective action. Be certain that you integrate evidence from the text and outside sources to support your plan on action.

STEPS:

•       Communicate rules to all employees. Rules should be thoroughly explained to new employees during orientation as well as published in an employee handbook or posted on a bulletin board. As few rules as possible should be made, and these should be reviewed annually. Changes in rules should be communicated in writing, since people can be held responsible only for rules they know about.

• Provide immediate corrective action. Some leaders postpone corrective action because carrying it out is uncomfortable or distasteful. The practice of storing up observations and complaints and then unloading on an employee in one angry session only alienates the subordinate. Immediate correction and penalties (if appropriate) are more acceptable to the offender, and thus more effective. If there is an association between misconduct and swift corrective action, repetition of the offense is less likely to occur.

• Create a system of progressive corrective measures for violation of rules. Fairness requires a progression of penalties—oral warning, written warning, suspension from the job, and discharge. The leader should be sure that a final warning has been issued Page 485
prior to actual discharge. This progression gives the leader a chance to help the employee improve. If a penalty is necessary, severity should depend on the offense, the employee’s previous record, and the corrective value of the penalty. Theft may justify immediate suspension; tardiness may not.

• Provide an appeal process for corrective action. An appeal process helps ensure fair treatment for employees. If a mistake is made during the corrective process, a procedure for review can help correct a wrongful disciplinary action.

• Preserve human dignity. Corrective action should take place in private. This approach reduces defensiveness and the likelihood that other employees may become involved and create an even bigger problem. Meeting privately provides a better opportunity to discuss the problem and prevent it from happening again. Never reprimand an employee in public.
