Advanced Nursing Inquiry and Evidence Based Practice

Self-Reflection Forum.

Watch the video below titled,
Caring Corrupted: The Killing Nurses of the Third Reich
and then reflect on the following prompt:

This video conjures many emotions, both as a nurse and a moral human being. Most of us entered/will enter the profession of nursing in response to a calling to care for our fellow human beings. For many of us, we believe with an urgent commitment that nursing is who we are, not simply what we do. We are guided by a moral compass that sets our life course based on knowing right from wrong, good from evil.
While it is impossible for us to understand how the nurses in the concentration camps could be complicit in their role as ‘doers’ of euthanasia, it is curious how many of them came to believe that killing was a legitimate part of their caring role. These thoughts beg many questions, the answers for which will be reflective of your own beliefs and values system. Answer the following in your Forum post:
Do you think these nurses were complicit from the beginning, or did they slowly become involved over time until it became easier to cross the line? Once they did cross the line, how might a sense of power have overtaken their moral judgment? Perhaps they were indoctrinated to believe that the health of the public at large was more important than the health of the individual; yet how could they justify their actions to exploit the few for the benefit of the many? Were they simply following orders? Were they motivated by the thought of losing their job, or maybe even their life, if they refused? Could they have truly believed that they were simply relieving these children of their suffering and in so doing were being merciful in their actions?
In the context of your own nursing practice, why is this reflection activity important? Think about your own vulnerability to outside pressures and influences—would you speak up today if your moral position was threatened? Why or why not? Consider this from a position of power that you may or may not have. In today’s challenging healthcare environment, why is it important that we not only understand our moral position but that we also monitor our own response and the response of others?

American History Research Essay – Women in World War II

RESEARCH PAPER

Assignment: Each student will write a 6 to 8-page research paper on a topic that contributes to the study of American history since 1877.  The purpose of this assignment is to write a research paper in history that analyzes sources to answer a research question.

Detailed instructions:

1.  Thesis statement. Take a clear position and precisely state the argument you will make in your research paper. You must have a thesis statement and defend it with carefully chosen, detailed evidence.  The thesis must be clear and contain (in succinct form) the main points you will cover in your paper.  The structure and order of the thesis should reflect the structure and order in your paper.

2.  Organize your evidence carefully. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that clearly links back to your thesis.  Avoid making historical claims without making sure you provide sufficient evidence to prove your claim.  You must use in-text citations per MLA format.

3. Document, document, document. For the research paper, at a minimum, you must use two scholarly, academic, well-researched secondary sources from the timeframe covered in the course that come from offline scholarly, academic printed books and academic journals. You cannot use textbooks (including your course textbook), encyclopedia articles, website articles that are not from an offline published academic journal, juvenile non-fiction books or articles, blogs, chats, or wiki sites (especially Wikipedia) as the two

mandatory sources for your paper. Keep in mind that every borrowed idea or phrase must be documented with in-text citations and a “Works Cited” section using MLA format. The following from the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning provides insight into why you are relying on offline scholarly sources only for this writing assignment: “Internet vs. Print Sources:  Some professors will discourage you from using sources you find or access over the Internet. Although such restrictions may be excessive, there are reasons to be wary. It’s much easier to publish information on the Internet than to publish a book or periodical in print. Since it’s easier, Web posters are not always as careful to make sure that the information is accurate. For one thing, print publishing is more expensive, so many print publishers are careful not to make mistakes or to cut corners in case what they publish turns out to be unreliable—and therefore useless. The seeming anonymity of the Internet also encourages some people to write things quickly, without checking to be sure of their facts or their conclusions. Most of us have had the experience of sending by email something we wrote quickly—perhaps when rushed or angry. Often these are things we wouldn’t print, sign, and

mail, because those extra steps give us time to consider our words more carefully, and also because we recognize a higher expectation that things in print should be trustworthy.”

4.  State your conclusion. Your conclusion must support your thesis, and should tie into your introduction.

5.  Write clearly and concisely.  You do not have space to waste words.  Make every single sentence count.  Use direct quotes sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.  Grammar, spelling, and style do count. Use spell-check and grammar check as a minimum.

6.  Format properly. Double-space (“0” point) your paper, with one-inch margins, using Times New Roman 12 font in MLA format.  Your paper must include in-text citations and a Works Cited page listing the sources you are using.  There must be a minimum of 5 and ½ pages of manuscript text plus the Works Cited page.

Benchmark – The Economics of Federalism

Since ratification of the U.S. Constitution, relations among state governments and the national government have grown to be much more interdependent. Whereas states once enjoyed greater autonomy (dual federalism), the additional demands placed on government (at all levels) has fostered an evolution of federalism, whereby the federal government now plays a much more pronounced role in local and state affairs, with respect to a whole host of issues (including healthcare, education, public safety, transportation, etc.). In 1,500 to 2000 words do the following.

1.  Describe block grants, categorical grants, and unfunded mandates. How do they demonstrate fiscal federalism?

2.  Explain which funding mechanism states prefer. Why? Which funding mechanism does the federal government prefer? Why?

3.  Describe how both state and federal governments participate in the provision of medical care to low-income residents.

4.  In Arizona, low-income residents receive healthcare coverage through the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). How is AHCCCS funded (e.g., categorical grants)? What are the eligibility requirements, and who sets them? How do the basic conditions set by the federal government constrain AHCCCS?

5.  Assess the effectiveness of federal aid to state and local communities, particularly as it relates to healthcare coverage.

Use two to three scholarly resources to support your explanations.

Interviews and Interrogations CRJ-573

The topic for this assignment is the January 24, 2017 interview with National Security Advisor Lt. General Michael Flynn by FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter P. Strzok II and FBI Agent Joe Pientka (his name has been redacted) and his subsequent confession and guilty plea. You are to thoroughly investigate this case using whatever articles and court documents you can identify and access. I have attached the Strokz original FD-302’s of the interview recently made public. You are to identify at least two ethical dilemmas within and facing the criminal justice system that is adjudicating Flynn’s case. And two ethical dilemmas facing the FBI and Department of Justice that are investigating and prosecuting Michael Flynn.

Your investigative analysis can consider

  • The interview and how it was obtained, orchestrated and weaponized against Flynn and his associates, family, professional roles and influence.
  • All the various political aspects, legal commentaries, analysis, and even the unethical and criminal activity with the FBI and Department of Justice that was brought to bear on Flynn to gain his guilty plea.
  • Federal Judge Emmet G. Sullivan’s delays, extensions and reluctance to accept Flynn’s guilty plea.
  • Lt. General Flynn’s role as National Security Director and his knowledge and access of Obama’s administration’s abuse of the intelligence communities surveillance on private citizens and members of the Republican party as documented in the FISA court application initiating the Mueller investigation.

Your article should reflect “critical thought” as an investigative report supported with research and reliable references and sources. The article should be no less than 2000 words. Normally 2500 words are required to topically develop and critically analyze this subject matter.

Article for Publication:

The topic and instructions for this assignment is listed in the main forum of the class page.

The research paper is not to be an opinion piece such as an Op-Ed or newspaper article. This is to a scholarly

article based on extensive research. Any articles that are not written in the required manner will not be accepted.

The article must be no less than 2000 words and must be written in the most current APA format. No papers

will be accepted for credit if they do not conform to APA writing requirements. Be sure to include a separate

reference page in the final paper.

Remember, critical thinking is an attempt to train the mind in a self-reflective and self-directed manner. Its purpose is to make thinking clear, precise, accurate, relevant, consistent, and fair. It is open-minded, yet skeptical. No claim is rejected out of hand. Note that the term “critical” refers to performing a critique, which evaluates both strengths and weaknesses in a claim, position, or argument. A critical thinker rigorously applies intellectual standards to both sides of an issue, notwithstanding personal preference. Your dilemmas should be strongly correlated with your documented research. I will allow enormous lead-way and freedom in your creative expression and ideas. Think outside the box and your personal and professional comfort zone.

Remember that is assignment is 30% of your overall grade. It is due at the end of the Week 7, so don’t forget.

Format:

Prepare a title page with the title of your project, your name, course name and the professor’s name. Present your research outcomes in a summary report format that is well-defined and logical, and cite all your pertinent authorities and references that were used to complete the project in accordance with the most current APA Version 7 format and style. The paper should follow the same course requirements to include 1” margins and double spaced typed text , consisting of 9 to 10 pages; these pages are not to include references. Your paper must be 85% original.

Training needs assignment Part 2

Use the TNA to identify performance gaps and to establish specific training outcomes. This assignment builds on the previous one and will complete your TNA. Use at least three classroom resources in this assignment.

For this assignment, you will work on items 6 – 8 only (below)

NOTE: you will include a summary of assignment one as the intro!

6. Include at least three training outcomes, based on the TNA

Think of training outcomes in a larger context:  how will the training solve the problem (or, address the need) at an organizational level?  Think of this as a justification for your training. How you would “sell” the training to the organization’s leadership team.  Why should they invest in the training. What’s in it for them (AKA, the organization)?

Remember, this should be as tangible as possible!

7. Identify the expected performance of the group or individuals as a result of the training

This is where you will focus more on the individual level. Think in terms of learning objectives.  As a result of the training, what will the target audience do (or not do) that will improve their performance?

8. Identify performance gaps and detail how training can help close those gaps

Here you will essentially validate your proposed training . What performance gaps (or needs) is the training intended to address and how do your training recommendations achieve this? There needs to be a clear connection between what you are proposing and what you are trying to address.

To earn extra credit, pick one of the movies from the following list.

To earn extra credit, pick one of the movies from the following list.  Write a 1-2 page essay giving me a summary of the movie and telling me how your chosen movie relates to the history we have studied and what you learned from watching it. A good summary including points of both historical accuracies and inaccuracies will earn you up to five points on top of your final grade.  Any analysis over and above the basic may earn you extra points.  Analysis over and above the basic would be, for example, most movies made about historical subjects tell us more about what is going on at the time they are made than it does about the historical subject they’re portraying.  Pay attention to the dates these movies were made, points will be awarded for showing an understanding of the historical context in which they were created. For example, despite the fact that the first Indiana Jones movies ostensibly portray Harrison Ford battling the Nazis, they much more accurately portray Americans’ feelings about the Soviets and the Cold War in the 1980s, when the original movies were made.  The new Indiana Jones, while the only one actually about the Cold War, really shows you a lot more about how Americans think of the War on Terror and the post-Cold War world.  Points will be given for humor and entertainment value.  Copying any portion of your essay from IMDB or any other website will not earn you points, so don’t waste your time (and mine)!

*Double Points*

I, Claudius (1976)  One of my favorite movies of all time, it is really a BBC miniseries, so it’s about twelve hours long.  If you watch the whole thing, and prove to me you didn’t fall asleep in the middle, I’ll give you double points.  This movie covers the development of the Roman empire from the point of view of the emperor Claudius.  It is completely accurate to Suetonius’ Lives of the Caesars, which means it probably isn’t accurate historically, but it is full of all the most salacious gossip about their emperors that a wealthy empire could come up with.

Spartacus (1960) A classic epic film, the fictionalized account of an actual slave revolt that took place in southern Italy under the late Roman Republic.

The Return of Martin Guerre (1982)  The story of a medieval Frenchman who returns to his home village after having been away at war for years.  His friends and family suspect him of being an impostor.  More entertaining than it sounds from this description, it is also interesting because it is a true story, found in the French archives by a historian in the 1970s.

The Lion in Winter (1968) Yes, there is a later remake of this movie, but watch the early one with Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Peter O’Toole as Henry II.  This is the story of Henry’s reign in England in the High Middle Ages, his battles with France over his territories there, and his battles with his family, including his powerful wife and his pain-in-the-neck sons, particularly Richard and John.

The Seventh Seal (1957) An Ingmar Bergman film about the Black Death and its effect on European culture.  Does the film portray the ways that medieval Europeans dealt with the plague, or really just what 1950’s culture thinks about death?

The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965) Starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo, this is the story of the painting of the Sistine Chapel, and the difficult relationship between Michelangelo and Pope Julius (the warrior pope).

A Man for All Seasons (1966)  The story of the last years of the life of Thomas More, chancellor to Henry VIII.  More was a committed Catholic and was (spoiler alert!) beheaded because he wouldn’t publicly proclaim that Henry was the rightful supreme head of the Church of England.

Elizabeth (1998) The story of the early years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England.  Pretty good on the politics, but as most of these movies do, it completely invents a romantic plot line between Elizabeth and one of her courtiers.  You can also watch the sequel, Elizabeth: The Golden Age if you want.

La Reine Margot (Queen Margot)  This is the story of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, told from the perspective of Margot, or Marguerite, the sister of the king and the one who is being married off to Henry of Navarre, leader of the Huguenots.  It gives an interesting view of the politics of early modern France as well as their religious difficulties.  And, of course, some really bloody massacre scenes.
