GEN499 Week 4 – Discussion 1

 Elements of Critical Thinking [WLOs: 2, 3, 4] [CLOs: 2, 3, 4]

Prepare: In preparation for discussing the importance of critical thinking skills, please read the following articles: Critical Thinking and the Challenges of Internet (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and Common Misconceptions of Critical Thinking. You may also read other applicable sources found under the Week 4 Resources tab to gain a better understanding of what it takes to be a critical thinker.

Reflect: Reflect on the characteristics of a  critical thinker. Critical thinking gets you involved in a dialogue with  the ideas you read from others in this class. To be a critical thinker,  you need to be able to summarize, analyze, hypothesize, and evaluate  new information that you encounter.

Write: For this discussion, you will address the  following prompts. Keep in mind that the article or video you’ve chosen  should not be about critical thinking, but should be about  someone making a statement, claim, or argument related to your Final  Paper topic. One source should demonstrate good critical thinking skills  and the other source should demonstrate the lack or absence of critical  thinking skills. Personal examples should not be used.

  • Explain at least five elements of critical thinking that you found in the reading material.
  • Search the Internet, media, or the Ashford University Library, and  find an example in which good critical thinking skills are being  demonstrated by the author or speaker. Summarize the content, and  explain why you think it demonstrates good critical thinking skills.
  • Search the Internet, media, or the Ashford University Library, and  find an example in which the author or speaker lacks good critical  thinking skills. Summarize the content, and explain why you think it  demonstrates the absence of good, critical thinking skills.

You are required to  provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials  and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide  full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your  response.

Integrating the Field of Developmental Psychology: A Review of the Literature

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review the age group / developmental stage you selected in Week Two of the course. Remember, you must use this age group / developmental stage.

You will then review the Developmental Psychology literature examining findings for that age group / developmental stage in terms of the physical, emotional, cognitive, social dimensions, and how they impact development and can best be used to meet developmental needs.  Additionally, create a summary of the developmental stage as viewed through the lens of one developmental theory we have studied across the course (Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development, Freud’s Psychosexual Theory, Erickson’s Psychosocial Theory, etc.).

In your paper,

  • Examine the physical changes associated with the selected developmental stage.
  • Examine the cognitive changes associated with the selected developmental stage.
  • Examine the emotional changes associated with the selected developmental stage.
  • Examine the social changes associated with the selected developmental stage.
  • Evaluate the developmental changes and appraise the effects of the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social environments.
  • Integrate developmental and environmental factors into an assessment of developmental needs.
  • Create a summary of the developmental stage as viewed through the lens of a selected developmental theory.
  • Propose solutions for areas not addressed by the theory.
  • Analyze the ethical considerations for research and practice with the selected developmental stage.

Designing Qualitative Research

Typically, when speaking of validity, qualitative researchers are referring to research that is credible and trustworthy, i.e., the extent to which one can have confidence in the study’s findings (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). Generalizability, a marker of reliability, is typically not a main purpose of qualitative research because the researcher rarely selects a random sample with a goal to generalize to a population or to other settings and groups. Rather, a qualitative researcher’s goal is often to understand a unique event or a purposively selected group of individuals. Therefore, when speaking of reliability, qualitative researchers are typically referring to research that is consistent or dependable (Lincoln & Guba, 1985), i.e., the extent to which the findings of the study are consistent with the data that was collected.

For this Discussion, you will explain criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research and consider the connection of such criteria to philosophical orientations. You will also consider the ethical implications of designing qualitative research.

Post an explanation of two criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research designs. Next, explain how these criteria are tied to epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying philosophical orientations and the standards of your discipline. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in qualitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions. Finally, explain what it means for a research topic to be amenable to scientific study using a qualitative approach.

Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Phenomenological Method

Describing how any one participant experiences a specific event is the goal of the phenomenological method of research. This method utilizes interviews, observation and surveys to gather information from subjects. Phenomenology is highly concerned with how participants feel about things during an event or activity. Businesses use this method to develop processes to help sales representatives effectively close sales using styles that fit their personality.

choose a prominent theorist, activist, or reformer within criminology

Require some personal interpretation or perspective, often because of a stake in the topic

criminology

Description

Each student will choose a prominent theorist, activist, or reformer within criminology to research (historical or contemporary and from any society) and write a short paper (i.e., a minimum of 4 double-spaced pages) exploring and outlining the importance of their work. https://homeworkmasterss.com/participate-in-a-discussion-regarding-the-article-making-process-improvements-s/

Approach this assignment like a profile. Some definitions of a profile are quite narrow (e.g., a story of one person that explores their background and character). However, I invite you to consider the process of researching and writing a profile more dynamically. Yes, a profile should examine the subject’s personal and professional life, as well as give the reader a greater understanding of the subject through the lens of their personal interests, career, education, background, advocacy, and contributions to criminology. However, it is important to consider going beyond the obvious two-dimensional portrait of a person. For example, you could research a specific person (e.g., theories, activist, reformer) or profile of a reform movement; however, if you write a profile on an entire movement, you will probably find it still comes back to the people involved with the place/idea/campaign/movement, https://prohomeworkhelpers.com/2021/06/08/1-provide-an-analysis-of-the-weeks-required-lectures-2-do-some-outside-researc/ but you are still researching and writing about the movement/campaign/idea/event.

Profiles :

• Require some personal interpretation or perspective, often because of a stake in the topic.

• Typically provoke more thinking about ideas even beyond the “individual” at the centre of the profile.

• Develop the breadth, depth, dimensionality, and contradictions inherent in the topic.

• Might emphasize the exotic, peculiar or bizarre, but they always get beyond the surface — sometimes with emphasis on social, political, https://www.instaassignment.com/picot-question-in-the-pediatric-population-from-ages-0-18-will-parent-educati/ or moral implications implicit in the topic.

Assignment: Course Project – Budget and Timeline

Budgeting and developing a timeline are important steps in public health program planning. If a budget is properly developed it provides a solid foundation for guiding the implementation of the program as well as sustaining it. A timeline is also essential as it provides program planners a guide to use when determining the progress of a program.

For your Course Project this week, you are given $200,000 to fund your program for one year. You will prepare a budget for your program, considering the resources that you need and how you would allocate funds. Some allocation of funds may include marketing DVDs, time for personnel to hold meetings, electricity, and cleaning services for the office space. For your budget, you do not need to include more complex allocations such as employee salaries, fringe benefits, overhead, phones, etc. Also, you should assume you have some in-kind support to use in your project. In-kind support is any resource you do not have to pay for such as free printing of educational brochures or free telephone services. In addition to your budget, you create a basic Gantt or PERT chart to present your timeline.

To Prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review Chapter 13 in the McKenzie et al. text. Pay particular attention to how to create a budget and allocate funds.
  • Given the $200,000 you received for your public health program, create a one-year budget.
  • Refer to Figure 10.2 on p. 283 of the McKenzie et al. text to view a sample budget sheet.
  • Think about potential in-kind support/assets that may influence your budget.
  • Review Chapter 12 in the McKenzie et al. text, and see the sample timeline and Gantt charts on pages 325–326. In addition, you may wish to use the Internet to research how to create a Gantt or PERT chart. Microsoft Excel also has some resources available that you can search. Consider what would be an adequate yet basic timeline to execute the program plan you have developed. Think about the tasks and activities that should be included in a basic timeline for your program plan.

The Assignment : Final Course Project Submission (8 – 12 pages total, not including cover page or references)

  • Begin with an Executive Summary of your whole project and a Conclusion statement (3 – 4 paragraphs)
  • Collate the components from Weeks 2, 3 and 4 with corrections to items noted by the Instructor.
  • In addition, add a final 2- to 3- page section on budget and timeline that includes responses to the following prompts:
    • Using the sample budget sheet on page 283 of the text, create a budget allocating $200,000 for your public health program. Include at least one in-kind support/asset in your budget.
    • Provide a rationale for your allocation of funds.
    • Develop a basic timeline using a Gantt or PERT chart. Note: Microsoft Excel provides templates that you can use.
    • Provide a rationale for the basic timeline for your program plan.

Note: To ensure that you are meeting all of the requirements for the Course Project, be sure to review the Course Project Instructions located in the Learning Resources.

Your written Assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate.
