Employee Development and Performance Appraisal

You are the vice president of a human resources department and Susan has been your executive assistant for one (1) year. She effectively completes her given assignments, sometimes ahead of schedule. Susan has a welcoming personality and is commended on her willingness to help when asked. As a result of her efficiency, Susan often has spare time on her hands. In several conversations, you have spoken with Susan about taking a proactive stance and involving herself in the business to increase her knowledge base. You have suggested she attend strategic planning meetings, shadow other Business Partners, and take professional development courses geared towards human resources.  Susan has not incorporated any of these suggestions. The organization promotes and encourages employee development and has a requirement of 24 professional development (PD) hours for each employee per annual review cycle.  As VP of the department, you have offered to mentor Susan; yet she has not taken advantage of the offer. Given Susan capabilities and potential, you want to mutually establish future performance goals and developmental opportunities to enhance her effectiveness and maximize her organizational contributions. Susan professional appearance and interaction with co-workers is superb.  When asked to complete a task, she fulfills the assignment willingly and with very few errors.  She is well liked and respected by her peers.  She has impeccable oral and written communication skills. Overall, you are pleased with her performance but want to see Susan take initiative to seek out tasks to complete rather than waiting to be told what to do. As the VP of HR, you have been tasked with a two part assignment. In part one of this assignment you will explain the importance of performance appraisals, analyze the essential elements which should be included and describe how performance appraisals can be used to promote employee growth. In part two of this assignment you will create a performance appraisal for Susan. Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length incorporating both parts I and II.  You can either design a performance appraisal document or use an existing template. The performance appraisal should be no more than 3 pages of the total page count for the assignment.  Be sure your paper addresses all of the following components:

Part I: Importance of Performance Appraisals:Explain how performance appraisals can be used as part of employee development.Explain why rankings are given to employees and the advantages and disadvantages of including rankings.Address why organizations should deliver appraisals in a timely manner to employees.Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of three different types of performance appraisals. Make a recommendation of which type of performance appraisal is most appropriate for Susan. Provide suggestions on how the manager can give feedback on a continual basis to the employee to encourage continual development.

Part II: Susan Performance Evaluation As the VP of HR, you are providing Susan with feedback on these areas and suggesting ways to develop in the areas where she is not meeting expectations as outlined in the scenario. The performance appraisal directly ties to compensation increases. The appraisal should highlight achievements over the past year; while addressing expectations and setting goals moving forward. The performance evaluation should address the following areas:
Professional Development
Job performance
Communication internal and external
Professional Demeanor
Working relationships
Compensation recommendation

Deliverable 1 – Strategic Management Plan

Competency

Examine the nature and functions of strategic management.

Instructions

Today a new quarter begins at one of the following well-known organizations: Google, Walt Disney Company, Amazon, P&G, 3M, or Ford Motor Company. Please choose one of these organizations to complete the summative assessments for this course. Once you choose an organization, you should use that organization for all of your assignments.

There are changes on the horizon for your chosen company that could either impact business positively or negatively, so there is a need to revisit the current strategic plan.

Complete the following steps by writing a three- to four-page APA formatted paper with at least two outside sources (in addition to the text):

  1. Research what the vision and objectives are for the organization over the next two years.
    • What is the current vision and has the organization followed this vision through their actions? If so, how, and if not, in what ways?
    • What are the short-term and long-term objectives for the organization? In what ways can these objectives be achieved? (If the organization has not provided this information, use your research to hypothesize what these objectives might be, and how they could be achieved.)
  2. Complete a SWOT analysis by performing research on your chosen organization. If the necessary information is not available, infer what the missing information might be based on your research.
    • What are the current strengths of the organization and will they still be of value as the industry changes?
    • In what way can the current weaknesses be minimized while adapting to the change on the horizon?
    • Are the opportunities of the previous plan still applicable? If not, what will the new opportunities be?
    • What are the upcoming threats? Can they be addressed in the same way as they have been in the past?

In addition to answering the questions above, please answer the following question in your paper: In what way was this analysis beneficial in providing the beginnings of a well-rounded plan for the future, and in what way will this understanding impact the workforce? Incorporate information from the readings, your research, and personal experience (using APA citations where appropriate).

Do Training Methods Discussion and reply to Donalds discussion

 Training Methods Discussion:

There are several instructional methods and activities that can be  used to deliver training. As a trainer, you should have a broad  awareness of different kinds of instructional methods so that you can  recommend and utilize the most appropriate solutions for the specific  learning objectives.

List and describe three types of training methods. What type of  activity is it? What types of activities precede and follow it? What  learning style(s) does this activity accommodate? What adult learning  characteristics does this activity incorporate? Discuss the pros and  cons of each method. Lastly, using Bloom’s taxonomy, create a training  objective for each instructional method. Be sure to consider the  specific skills and knowledge to be learned in the training in order to  appropriately apply each instructional method.

Your initial post should be 250 to 300 words. Use this week’s lecture  as a foundation for your initial post. In addition to the Blanchard and  Thacker (2013) text, use at least one additional scholarly source to  support your discussion.

Respond to at least two other posts regarding items you found to be  compelling and enlightening. To help you with your reply, please  consider the following questions:

  • What did you learn from the posting?
  • What additional questions do you have after reading the posting?
  • What clarification do you need regarding the posting?
  • What differences or similarities do you see between your initial discussion thread and your classmates’ postings?
  • Ask each other questions about why the specific training methods were selected.
  • How do the types of training methods selected by your classmate apply to other learning style(s)?
  • Analyze your classmates’ training objectives. Do the learning  objectives describe the key conditions, observable performance/behavior,  and set the standard for performance? What modifications would you  suggest to ensure that trainees understand the expectations clearly?

Your reply posts to Donald should be a minimum of 150-250 words each.

Reply to Donalds post:

Three  types of training methods that I will talk about are: Instructor-led  training, computer based training, and simulations and games training.

Instructor-led Training- Instructor conducts a lecture with audience  participation throughout the lecture. Trainees who listen and are great  note takers will enjoy this training. Q&A sessions followed by brief  quizzes to see if everyone was paying attention at the end of the  lecture.

Computer Based Training- Trainees can focus on what materials they  are learning by having a computer in front of them. There are people  that learn better when they aren’t around others trying to learn at the  same time. Many activities can come from learning on a computer. This  helps trainees by being able to listen, see and create (or hands on) to  maximize their learning potential.

Simulations and Games Training-  When trainees role play they are put  in real life job situations with real life problems and solutions they  must come up with to fix the problem. If trainees dont get along the  trainer has to continue with mixing up the group so everyone can take a  turn on each position of the role play. This a great for hands on types  of learners, they are able to see and feel what they are learning.

For the trainees that read and follow along well the instructor-led  and computer based training is perfect for them to learn about their  job. Vani, G. (2014) states that,” for smaller groups, case studies come  in handy because they make the trainees aware of what can happen in the  workplace and the best way to handle it”. The use of using any visual  aids for the instructor-led and computer based training will be fun and  with the use of creating videos they will all be able to analyze each  others work which is the analyzation stage. Prioritizing what they have  learned through the three steps will be applied after analyzing. After  applying what they have learned, the trainees should be able to converse  with each other about everything. This is where the understanding phase  comes in, they can act out or show what they have learned. Finally,  remembering what they were taught.

Deliverable 6 – Leadership’s Role in Creating an Innovative Culture (POWERPOINT 12-16 Slides)

 INCLUDE SPEAKER NOTES

Competency

Evaluate the importance of leadership to build an innovative culture in the workplace.

Scenario

You are considered an industry expert on innovation. You understand that in today’s highly competitive environment, businesses are under pressure to constantly change and innovate. In order to stay relevant, organizations are always searching for unique ideas and to find the next best way to create value and gain a loyal following. Unfortunately, without appropriate leadership, building a culture that supports and allows for innovation is challenging, at best.

As a business innovation guru and professional speaker, you have been asked to speak at an upcoming innovation conference. You decide the best way to explain innovation is to compare the leadership and culture of two innovative companies from different industries. You can present on any two innovative companies that you choose, as long as they are from different industries. You will present at the conference using PowerPoint and will need to include the following information in your presentation.

Instructions

Prepare a Presentation with speaker notes. Be sure to include all of the following slides in your presentation.

  • Title Slide: Presentation Introduction (1 slide)
  • Explain leadership styles and skills that have been successful to create an environment of innovation for both companies (2 slides minimum, 1 for each company)
  • Distinguish the type of culture that each organization possesses. (2 slides)
  • Describe the attitude on empowerment within each organization. (2 slides minimum, 1 for each company)
  • Hypothesis which business strategies would enable each company to continue to innovate and excel in future years (2 slides minimum, 1 for each)
  • Closing Slide: Conclusion & Closing (1 slide)

Unit 3 Assessment: Forensic Resurrection of a Skeleton

The body can tell us many things about the life of a person. Lab analysis on human blood can reveal insight into diet, lifestyle, propensity for disease, as well as hundreds of years of ancestral lineage.

In death, the body is as equally telling as the body systems and tissues have distinct characteristics and norms. Factors such as the cause and time of death, sex, and age can be determined through a post-mortem examination.

Instructions:

In this case study, assume the role of a forensic anthropologist that must examine a skeleton found in a shallow grave in a state park. You will research and simulate the actual procedures used within a forensics lab to determine the age, sex and height of a skeleton, as well as learn to identify bones, landmarks, and anatomical features associated with sex, age and height of a skeleton. Further, you will research and simulate the varying levels of pathological and morphological changes used within forensics anthropology to help determine both cause and time of death.

  • Read the attached case study, Dem Bones to set the scene
  • Prior to reading the case study, read through the list of questions below and keep these in mind as you complete the reading.
  • After the reading, begin researching and examining the individual bones of the skeleton and their landmarks, according to forensic anthropology techniques, and determine the following, providing rationale for each determination:
    • Describe in detail how the sex of a human skeleton can be determined based upon pelvic, skull and femur morphological distinctions.
    • Based upon forensic anthropological techniques, describe how the height of a skeleton can be determined when the human skeleton is no longer fully intact.
    • Based upon forensic anthropological technique, describe in detail how the age of a skeleton can be determined.
    • Discuss how pathological and morphological changes within bone might help a forensic anthropologist determine both a cause and a theoretical timeline of death.
    • Discuss how varying changes observed within the levels of organization in the body after death can help a forensic anthropologist to determine both a cause and time of death, i.e., organ temperature (liver), water or smoke present/absent within the lungs, level of skin slippage, decay and tissue healing (bruising, petechial haemorrhaging on the conjunctiva, ligature marks, etc.).
  • Compile all results in a document for submission.

Please be sure to validate your answers with citations and references in APA format.

History and Process of Nursing Research, Evidence-Based Nursing Practice, and Quantitative and Qualitative Research Process

The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area. When a nursing problem is discovered, the nurse researcher develops a clinical guiding question to address that nursing practice problem.

For this assignment, you will create a clinical guiding question know as a PICOT question. The PICOT question must be relevant to a nursing practice problem. To support your PICOT question, identify six supporting peer-reviewed research articles, as indicated below. The PICOT question and six peer-reviewed research articles you choose will be utilized for subsequent assignments.

Use the “Literature Evaluation Table” to complete this assignment.

  1. Select a nursing practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research. Start with the patient population and identify a clinical problem or issue that arises from the patient population. In 200–250 words, provide a summary of the clinical issue.
  2. Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT question in your selected nursing practice problem area of interest. The PICOT question should be applicable to your proposed capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).
  3. The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project.
  4. Conduct a literature search to locate six research articles focused on your selected nursing practice problem of interest. This literature search should include three quantitative and three qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your nursing practice problem.

Note: To assist in your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Search for diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used in the articles the search produced, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods. Systematic Reviews, Literature Reviews, and Metanalysis articles are good resources and provide a strong level of evidence but are not considered primary research articles.  Therefore, they should not be included in this assignment.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

Week 4 Assignment: Essay – Play Analysis

Required Resources
Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 8
  • Play from the Internet, YouTube, DVD, iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc.
  • 1 primary source (written version of selected play)

Instructions
Plays are meant to be performed, rather than read. The purpose of dramatic arts often extends far beyond the words written on a page; staging, lighting, costumes intonation, expression, and audience experience are all part of the experience of a theatrical production. To develop your understanding of the cultural role of the dramatic arts, you will view a production of a play this week and write a reflection to explain your viewing experience. Choose a play that you would like to view and find a version online, YouTube, DVD or iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, etc. You can also choose to see a play live if you prefer.

Play Suggestions:

  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Romeo and Juliet
  • As You Like It
  • Taming of the Shrew
  • The Tempest
  • Much Ado About Nothing
  • The Comedy of Errors
  • Macbeth
  • King Lear

If you have another idea, please ask your instructor to approve it.

Then, select and address one of the following options:

Option 1: Write an analysis of the play that you viewed. Include at least one quote from the play in your essay. In your essay, address the following:

  • Identify the performance that you have selected.
  • Describe the staging, lighting, costumes, and characters of the performance. How do these match or revise the written version of the play? You do not need to read the entire play, but you should skim the text.
  • What type of mood and tone does the performance create? How?
  • What parts of the play are easier to understand through performance? What are some details that stood out through performance?
  • What are your feelings about this performance? What did you take away from viewing it?

Option 2: Find an adaptation or transformation of a play. Choose an adaptation with some significant differences from the original, such as transposed plots and characters into a variety of different settings and historical contexts. Here are some examples:

  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream – A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999) or A Midsummer Night’s DREAM (2018)
  • Romeo and Juliet – Romeo + Juliet (1996) or West Side Story (1961) or Romeo Must Die (2000)
  • As You Like It – As You Like It (2006)
  • Taming of the Shrew – 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) or Kiss Me, Kate (1948)
  • Much Ado About Nothing – Much Ado About Nothing (2012)
  • The Comedy of Errors – The Bomb-itty of Errors (2012)
  • King Lear – A Thousand Acres (1997)
  • Othello – O (2001)
  • Hamlet – The Lion King (2019 or 1994) or Hamlet (2000)
  • Twelfth Night – She’s the Man (2006)

If you have another idea, please ask your instructor to approve it.

Watch the original version and the adapted version. In your essay, address the following:

  • How is the adaptation the same as the original? Discuss plot, characters, theme, conflict, language, etc.
  • How does the adaptation differ from the original? Discuss setting, time period, characters, plot, language, etc.
  • Does the original story translate well in the adaptation? Why or why not? Did the adaptation work in a different setting, time period, etc. Why or why not?
  • Why do you think Shakespeare’s plays are adapted so often?

Writing Requirements (APA format)

  • Length: 1.5-2 pages (not including title page or references page)
  • 1-inch margins
  • Double spaced
  • 12-point Times New Roman font
  • Title page
  • References page (minimum of 1 source)

Senior Seminar in Sociology SOC-499-OL01

 Katie:

I found a website that had a list of examples of environmental racism across the United States.  The one I will talk about is in New Mexico.  Here, the farm works have been exposed to toxic and potentially deadly pesticides.  The pesticides are being used to treat the crops, but the workers’ safety is not being taken into consideration.  Like most environmentally racist situations, the government has done little to nothing to keep these people safe.

A sociologist could focus on the death rates to attempt to bring more attention to this issue.  If more people see that the death rate for farmworkers is higher than those with other jobs, and they can show evidence of the harmful pesticides being used, they can expose the truth.  The farms need to be held accountable, as well as the government because neither has done anything to protect the workers.  Sociologists can start and lead the conversation to get people to notice the problem and hopefully be able to get these farmworkers the better working conditions they deserve.

Jason 7

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a result of environmental racism. CVD kills more people than any other disease in low and middle–income countries. CVD was initially to be thought of as a genetic disease. Although genetics plays its part, it has been proven that “environmental influences that lead to progressive deterioration in the structure and the function of cardiovascular tissues” (Bhatnagar, 2017:162-163)

In another study, it has been proven that the demographic that suffers most from CVD are African Americans. “Studies assessing unique characteristics of high blood pressure in African Americans have found that aldosterone correlates significantly with several CVD risk factors associated with obesity-related high blood pressure in this population” (Graham, 2015:238).

African Americans are victims of environmental racism. CVD is higher among this demographic that live in “communities or neighborhoods with characteristics of joblessness, poverty, educational attainment, housing quality, environmental pollution, availability of nutritious foods, neighborhood walkability, neighborhood violence, access to green spaces, connectedness, and other social and environmental determinants of health” (Mensah, 2019:S37).

I think a way for the sociologist to mitigate these types of environmental racism are already happening. They must continue to do the research and show the type of statistics above. They must publish them in readings and make it known that racism that we could be blind can be revealed if given the correct platform. Sociologists would have to continue to educate teachers and school administration to allow this type of information to be part of an elementary school’s curriculum.
