Research Exercise: Letter to a Legislator

Due Week 9 and worth 110 points

In this exercise, you will write a two-page letter to your state or federal representative about a health-care issue currently being discussed/debated. Research where your representative stands on a current health-care issue as well as where the medical profession, such as professional organizations, practicing medical professionals, patients, and other advocates, stands on the issue. In your letter, you will state why you either agree or disagree with your representative’s position on the issue and provide references to support your position. Provide a title page and a reference page. This does not count toward the total page count.

  1. Identify a health-care issue that is currently being debated nationally or at the state level.
  2. Write a two-page letter explaining why you agree with your representative’s position or not.
  3. Include data and evidence as appropriate to align your position with the current People goals.          a. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/healthy_people/hp2020/hp2020_topic_areas.htm   b. Include references to the appropriate government agencies.
  4. Utilizing the SWS format, include a reference page with at least two to three references from the past year. The citations must follow the SWS format. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality resources. This course requires the use of new Student Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are as follows:

  • Analyze the U.S. health-care system at local, regional, state, and national levels.
  • Examine the influence of political, economic, and social factors on the historical and current structure of the U.S. health-care system.

Portfolio with final paper

Instructions Portfolio Assignment Instructions  Please be sure to read all of this assignment description carefully. It’s very detailed. It describes two separate things. However, all items will be submitted in ONE Word document.    The portfolio that contains elements you have been working on throughout the course; and   The final paper (problem analysis) that you will include as part of the portfolio.   Let’s look at the BIG picture first, the final portfolio.      What is a portfolio?  A portfolio is a collection of items organized in a notebook, file, or a similar format. By collecting this information throughout a course, you can clearly see the connections among assignments as well as the progress you have made. In ENGL110, your portfolio will reflect the work you have done in a specific discipline or topic, ending with the analysis of a problem you have explored. Here are the required elements of the portfolio. The required sections are included in the template.     Title Page   Table of Contents   Item 1 of the Portfolio – Description of Discourse Community in Your Field     This is the assignment you submitted in week 2.  You are to submit a final version of the description, including any changes recommended to you in the instructor’s feedback.   Item 2 of the Portfolio – Annotated Bibliography for your Final Paper   This is the assignment you submitted in week 4. You are to submit a final version of the annotated bibliography, including any changes recommended to you in the instructor’s feedback.   Item 3 of the Portfolio – Final Paper – Analysis of a Problem  This is the final problem analysis paper that is the culmination of all the work you have done in the course.  Please see the complete description of the paper below.    Final Paper (Problem Analysis)   Assignment Instructions  This analysis project requires you to tackle a problem within your field of study by first exploring it, its causes, and its impacts.  Then, if you want, you can recommend one or more practical solutions to solve the problem.     After deciding on the problem you wish to tackle, begin building questions about it. Your goal for the analysis is to answer the questions through your sources. Finding multiple angles and perspectives is ideal so that you explore those possibilities in the final paper before settling on your recommendation.  Be sure to identify what is at stake.    Here are questions to help guide your analysis:  What is the problem being addressed (explain, describe, and “prove” that it exists)?   Who is affected by this problem?   Why does this problem exist (identify the root causes)?   Why does the problem persist (identify the major factors that contribute to the problem’s ongoing presence)?   What is at stake if the problem is not solved?    If you decide to include a solution, use these questions to guide you:    Who can take action?   What should they do, exactly?   Why would this help?  What are the positive and negative aspects of your solution(s)?     PURPOSE:   To analyze a problem and possibly provide a solution  AUDIENCE:   Classmates, others interested in the field  LENGTH:   900 – 1,000 words (Times New Roman font). Please do not go significantly under or above the word count requirement.  SOURCES:   5 (five) sources from the APUS Library (These may include sources you used in previous assignments. Going under this number will cost points in grading.)  FORMAT:   The citation style that is appropriate for your discipline      Submit your assignment as a Word document attached to the assignment link so it can be automatically processed through Turnitin. Use the template provided. You can save the template with a title like this: Your Name Portfolio Final Paper.

Case Study, Chapter 67, Management of Patients With Cerebrovascular Disorders
1. Penny Williams, a 74-year-old patient, is admitted to the telemetry unit with the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke. The patient is experiencing paroxysmal atrial fibrillation with a controlled ventricular rate on the monitor. A CT of the head without contrast reveals no evidence of hemorrhage. The transesophageal echocardiogram reveals moderate mitral valve insufficiency and embolism as a primary cause of the stroke. The patient is on a weight-based heparin protocol. The patient received digitalis to keep the ventricular rate of the atrial fibrillation controlled. The patient has right-sided paralysis and global aphasia. The patient has unilateral neglect of her right side and has right field homonymous hemianopsia. Papilla edema is present bilaterally. The patient is drooling from the right side of her mouth and coughs periodically. The patient was found by her daughter when she got home from work. The daughter stated her mother was normal before she left for work, and 10 hours later the mother exhibited the symptoms described above. The time of onset for the stroke could not be safely determined so no interventions could be used to treat the stroke. (Learning Objective 4)
What principles of nursing management should the nurse provide the patient during the acute stage of the ischemic stroke based on the assessment findings from the case study?
Place the assessment findings that are supported by the nursing principle(s) in parenthesis.
2. John Green, a 71-year-old patient, is being discharged from the rehabilitation unit 8 weeks after an ischemic stroke. The patient’s spouse stated that they used to enjoy going to golf outings with their friends, but the patient has not played golf since he had the stroke, and she does not want to try to golf once her husband is discharged home because he has to use a walker and can barely ambulate. She also states that her husband still has trouble speaking, and his short-term memory is not very astute so it would be embarrassing to be on a golf outing with him. The patient’s spouse has worn the same outfit to the rehabilitation unit the past 3 days, and the nurse notices the patient’s hair is unkempt and his affect is flat. The rehab nurse has made arrangements with the social worker for a physical therapist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist to provide three sessions of therapy at the patient’s home for the next 4 weeks, and then a reevaluation will follow to determine if the patient will need further therapy. The patient is able to sit independently, stand independently, and use a walker. The patient is able to ambulate 30 feet with the walker, and then he requires a short rest before he is able to ambulate another 30 feet. The patient slurs words occasionally and has hesitant speech. The patient has problems with short-term speech. (Learning Objective 7)
What educational topics should the nurse provide the family about home care for the patient after stroke?
What assessment of the spouse does the nurse need to make, and what should the nurse suggest?

School Psychologist-Based Personality and Behavior Assessment Scenario

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the Splett, Fowler, Weist, McDaniel, & Dvorsky (2013), Stinnett, Bui, & Capaccioli, (2013), and  Kosher, Jiang, Ben-Arieh, & Huebner, (2014) articles,  and review Chapters 10 through 13 in your textbook.

For this discussion, you will be taking on the role of the school psychologist in a public middle school. In this role, you will facilitate the evaluation of a student based on psychoeducational personality assessments, mental status exam, and observations of the student to make recommendations to the education team consisting of yourself, school counselors, and teachers who work with the student. Carefully review the PSY615: Week Three School Psychologist-Based Personality and Behavior Assessment Scenario  (Links to an external site.).

In your initial post:

  • Examine the personality assessment instrument used in the scenario and research a peer-reviewed article in the Ashford University Library on this personality assessment.
  • Using the required articles as well as your researched article to support your statements, describe the standard use of this personality assessment.
  • Based on the scenario, evaluate the reliability, validity, and cultural considerations inherent to the personality assessment used and comment on the relevance of these elements within the scenario.
  • Analyze and describe some of the potential ethical issues which might arise from the use of this personality assessment in the given scenario.
  • Provide information from your research regarding the use of the personality measure, and assess the value of other possible instruments that could be added to create a more complete assessment of the student in the scenario.

Guided Response:  Review several of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

  • Was your colleague’s researched article appropriate for the personality measure being considered?
  • Assess the personality instrument(s) suggested by your colleague. Would these measures provide reliable, valid, and culturally conscious results for the given scenario? Use your research to support your assertions.
  • What other measure(s) would you suggest your colleague use in this situation?

Week 3 Project: Duties of a Prosecutor

Week 3 Project: Duties of a Prosecutor

Supporting Lectures:

  • Ethical Systems
  • Ethics and Courts
  • Trial Court Workgroup

Prosecutors, as agents for the state, take an oath to uphold the Constitution and to seek justice on behalf of the state and its citizens.

Summarize the duties of a prosecutor in a criminal case, emphasizing those tasks that allow the prosecutor to wield strong influence over the case. Discuss how these particular tasks might present the prosecutor with ethical dilemmas.

Given that a defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty under the American judicial system, is the prosecutor also required to consider the defendant as being among the citizens he or she is protecting? Identify and explain the conflicting moral imperatives present in the duties of a prosecutor.

Recap the landmark Supreme Court case Brady v. Maryland (1963). Discuss the ramifications of this decision for prosecutors, with an emphasis on the ethical conflicts that may result.

Discuss the prosecutor’s ethical responsibilities when faced with a case that he or she would rather not pursue. For instance, consider a case in which a formerly battered wife is accused of attempted murder against her husband. Explain whether the “ethics of duty” or “ethics of care” outweigh utilitarianism for criminal prosecutors.

Module 02 Written Assignment – Outline and Annotated Bibliography

Module 02 Content

  1. This is the week you turn in your outline and annotated bibliography to give direction to your paper (Review the assignment in Module 01.)

    Outline:

    • Provide a strong thesis statement outlines the path that your project will follow. Remember to reflect on an argumentative point of view (through an assumption or myth)
    • Outline should support thesis, listing topics and sub-topics for your project.
    • Annotated Bibliography:
    1. Annotated paragraphs for at least 3 sources include summary of the source, an evaluation, and description of source’s usefulness.
    2. Properly formatted using APA guidelines.
    3. Mechanics follow required standards.
    4. Recap of Project Goal:
    • Write an argumentative research paper on a managed care-related topic, assumption or myth; thoroughly explaining what it is, why it’s important, and how it fundamentally impacts the managed care system today. You will gather evidence on present a well-reasoned argument or debatable issue. The goal of an argumentative paper is to show that your perspective is valid. You are to form reasons, draw conclusions and apply them to your findings. The purpose is not to completely prove your point, but to convince readers, with your evidence, that your argument or position has merit.
    • Your project is due by the end of Week 05. Along the way, you are responsible to do the research and writing and turn in portions of your project according to the following Time Line. (You will be given specific instructions each week.)
    • Submit your completed assignment to the drop box below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) Module 4

Within the Discussion Board area, write 400-600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Quality assurance is a holistic approach covering all the processes in academic research, in order to serve the students and other stakeholders in expected quality standards. The success of a quality assurance system depends on the support of academicians and the supporting academic institution.

Keeping this in mind, using at least two scholarly citations from peer-reviewed journal articles, make an argument for the peer-review manuscript process as a form of quality assurance in academia. Also point out within the position statement why garnering supporting and differing viewpoints of one’s scholarly writing helps aid in the overall research and discovery process of writing.

Responses to Other Students: Respond to at least 2 of your fellow classmates with at least a 100-word reply about their Primary Task Response regarding items you found to be compelling and enlightening. To help you with your discussion, please consider the following questions:

  • What did you learn from your classmate’s posting?
  • What additional questions do you have after reading the      posting?
  • What clarification do you need regarding the posting?

What differences or similarities do you see between your posting and other classmates’ postings?

M2: POETRY: Symbolism (RR5) Options Menu: Forum

After reading Chapters 15-17, respond to the prompt below:

Prompt: Consider the poems about roses (pages 887-889), and write a paragraph about each poem showing how it establishes specific symbolism for the rose. What generalizations can you draw about the rose’s traditional meanings in poetry? If you can, find other poems about roses outside of this textbook to determine if your generalizations still apply.

Your postings will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

  • Writing well-developed paragraphs relevant to the prompt(s) (minimum 300 words).
  • Be sure that your thesis is explicit and supported with one to two quotations from the literature.
  • Do not write in the first or second person.
  • Replying to two of your classmates with meaningful responses with a minimum of 30 words (do not simply write “I agree. I like what you’ve written.”)
  • Following the rules of Standard English. Please proofread your writing before clicking the ‘submit’ button!
  • When you include a quotation from the literature in your mini-essay, please place an in-text citation (also called a parenthetical citation) immediately after you close the quotation marks and before you place a period at the end of your sentence. That way, anyone in the class (including me!) can easily find the quotation in the literature if necessary. If you’re not sure what to place inside the parentheses, there is instruction in the textbook in Chapter 34- Quotation, Citation, and Documentation
  • When you include in-text citations, there must be a Works Cited listing at the bottom of your post.
  • Be sure to follow the “Quote Sandwich” when you insert quotations.

Dorothy Parker:
“One Perfect Rose”

A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet–
One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;
“My fragile leaves,” it said, “his heart enclose.”
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
One perfect rose.

The Sick Rose

BY WILLIAM BLAKEO Rose thou art sick.
The invisible worm,
That flies in the night
In the howling storm:

Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

Reflection Journal team work

Reflection Journal

One of the most effective ways we can understand what it is we know, what we have learned, and what we still need to know is through reflective writing. While reflective writing is not, by definition, technical writing, this weekly exercise should help you to better assess your progress through the course and course concepts.

Journal Topics: Teamwork Models and Teamwork Style Assessment

This journal has two parts and the foundations for your discussion are the readings and videos on teamwork and the team work quiz you took this week.

·  Managing team performance. (2012). Training Journal, 32–36.

·  Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing: Bruce Tuckman’s Team Stages Model Explained. (2014, November 10). MindTools Videos.

·  Avengers-Tuckman Team Development & Belbin Team Roles. (2012, September 9). North Birmingham VTS.

·  Ochman, H. (2017, March 29). What Kind Of Team Player Are You In The Workplace?

Part I:

Choose two theories/models of teamwork presented in the articles and/or videos that appeal to you.

·  Summarize the two theories you chose and credit the sources you used.

·  Be specific as to why you chose the theories. Why did they appeal to you?

Part II:

Take the teamwork quiz.

·  Did you find that the assessment is aligned with evaluation of your teamwork style?  .

·  Why or why not?

General Requirements

·  Between 250 and 350 words in length.

·  Respond to all prompts in the instructions.

·  Use information from the readings or videos to support your ideas and credit (identify) the source(s) used.

·  Proofread to eliminate technical errors (e.g. spelling, grammar, punctuation).
