Environmentalism and Moral Concern for Animals

Many believe that we are in serious trouble today as human beings plunging headlong into a major climate crisis on planet earth.

Our course eText on Environmental Ethics states the following:

There is no denying that the global climate is changing, as the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased during the past century.  … Coastlines are crumbling as the climate changes and sea levels rise… storms are increasing in severity … the Arctic ice cap is melting… (MacKinnon, 427).

Some skeptics dispute whether the changes are entirely man-made, but the vast majority of experts believe one of the major causes of climate change is the burning of fossil fuels … (MacKinnon, 428).

The following video link and quoted material provide: 1) a summary of a U.N. Climate Change Report from 2019 (the video), and 2) an explanation of the meaning of speciesism as Dr. Richard Ryder first used it (the quotation ).  After reviewing these, please respond to the discussion questions listed below.

U.N. Climate Change Report: LINK (Links to an external site.)

On Dr. Richard Ryder’s use of the term speciesism (which term the moral philosopher Peter Singer later made more popular):

“The view that only humans are morally considered is sometimes referred to as ‘speciesism’. In the 1970s, Richard Ryder coined this term while campaigning in Oxford to denote a ubiquitous type of human centered prejudice, which he thought was similar to racism. He objected to favoring one’s own species, while exploiting or harming members of other species” (Gruen, Lori, “The Moral Status of Animals”, The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Fall 2017 Edition, Edward N. Zalta, ed., URL = LINK (Links to an external site.)).

Carl Cohen of the University of Michigan, speaking in Germany, believes that animals do not have rights:

Discussion Questions (please address both 1 and 2).

[1] How does the hearing of this U.N. report on the climate crisis affect you, your values, your sense of the world and its future?   What human beliefs or values today will more likely prevent needed changes in our way of life, methods of production, or government policies?  And what beliefs or values will more likely lead to the kind of changes needed to address the climate crisis?

[2] Do you think humans are biased against animals, as moral philosophers like Peter Singer express with the term speciesism (and therefore we should not eat them), or Carl Cohen’s arguments against animal rights ( and therefore we can eat them).

Create a 500- to 800-word Diversity Proposal that addresses the following questions:

For this assignment, imagine you have been hired as the new Diversity & Inclusion Specialist in the Human Resources (HR) department of your current company or another company of your choosing. One of the first tasks you are given is to create a Diversity Proposal for your manager in response to an anonymous complaint (below) that was recently submitted to the HR suggestion box:

Complaint: I have been working here for 4 years. I am tired of watching the same “Diversity in the Workplace” 20-minute training video each January in order to satisfy the company’s annual diversity training requirement. Nothing around here shows that this company values diversity. As one of a few people of color at this company, I feel like I’m just here to increase diversity numbers so that the company “looks good” on paper. When are we going to actually do something to recognize all types of diversity? There are more aspects to diversity, besides race, that make individuals unique.

Create a 500- to 800-word Diversity Proposal that addresses the following questions:

  • What is the business case or proposition for recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion?
  • How can we create a company mission and company goals to outwardly express and reinforce our commitment to diversity and inclusion? What might our mission statement say to express our commitment?
  • What are at least two short-term actions (less than 6 months) that the company can take to immediately address some of the concerns expressed in the anonymous complaint?
  • What are at least two long-term actions (6 months to 2 years) that the company can take to address some of the concerns expressed in the anonymous complaint?
  • How can the company enhance its current annual employee diversity training? Why is this training important?
  • What initiatives can the company implement to celebrate diversity beyond race?
  • How can these initiatives bring employees together to celebrate diversity and promote inclusion?
  • What other suggestions do you have to improve workplace culture and messaging around diversity and inclusion?

Include a minimum of two scholarly articles/academic references.

Format your paper/proposal according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Hazardous Materials Safety

Introduce yourself to your classmates with your name, locationn(Tennessee),current employment (TrainMaster), and future goals.

Part II: Discuss the hazard communication (HazCom) program at your current organization or one you used to work for. What do you think works, and what needs to be improved? If you do not currently work for an organization that has a HazCom program, discuss which element of a HazCom program you believe would be the most difficult to implement.
ALSO PLEASE REPLY TO ANOTHER STUDENTS COMMENT BELOW

BRUNO:

my name is Bruno currently located in East North Carolina and working for a mechanical company as a safety manager, my goal is to aquire my BS in OSH and eventually work for a larger compaby or an international.

in our organization we have a hazcome program that we use for all the chemical materials we handle for specific operations depending on the job to complete, some of our employees would use oxygen or gas for welding in confined spaces and deep excavations. one the major issues i think we face often is for our guys to understand SDS and the use of pictograms usually they forget which pictogram belongs to each chemical. also i have notice that some of our workers did not understand the SDS before MSDS, so during our safety huddles we touch that topic to refresh their minds. i think training and retraining can be very helpful to change safety culture.

sociology discussion homework 10

Discussion # 10 DUE: Wednesday, June 2 @ 11PM

What is the difference between race and ethnicity? ( my race is yellow)

What is YOUR race? What is YOUR ethnicity? What does your race and/or ethnicity mean to you, if anything?

How can we simultaneously say that race “isnt’ real” and race is “important” (how/why is it important)? HINT: the sociological perspective/definition of race that challenges the notion of biology.

How does race continue to be “important” in today’s cultural, political and economic landscape?

What is the difference between prejudice and discrimination?

repond no,1

Race refers to a combination of physical and behavioral attributes that are used to group humans into distinct categories in society. The race is often associated with biology and linked with physical characteristics like hair texture and skin color. The race is believed to reflect a biological foundation, generate distinct racial groups, and the biological foundation is inherent among generations. Members of race are believed to share a set of biological characteristics which are not visible in members of other races. This biological foundation of race manifests itself fundamentally through physical phenotypes. Ethnicity, on the other hand, refers to a categorization of people who identify with each other based on shared attributes which distinguish them from other groups.

My race is Asian and my ethnicity is Han Chinese.  My race and ethnicity mean so much to me since they play a huge role in my growth of a strong and stable sense of self. My race and ethnicity help in shaping how I see myself and help me understand how others see me. My ethnicity instills in me the idea of belonging to a certain cultural group and how I share various elements such as language, place of origin, or religion. My race and ethnicity help me to understand how I relate to certain social, historical, and geographic contexts. The identity of my race and ethnicity helps me in understanding that of others and appreciating the differences in our races and ethnicities. My race and ethnicity also help in self-exploration.

There are various reasons in which the argument that ‘race is not real’ can be justified. For example, one cannot tell the correct race of another person by simply looking at them. Racial lines have been blurred to invisibility in an entire community in extreme cases and it is common to find people who might look one way but identify in another hence making it difficult to place them in a racial category. The race continues to be important but in a negative way in the economic landscape by being a leading source of economic inequality followed by gender. People of certain races such as Black and Latina have the highest number of less-desirable jobs, higher poverty rates, lower earnings, among others. The race is being used as a tool for discrimination in the economic sphere and is the main cause of the economic disparity among various groups of people. The race is also important in the political landscape as it plays a huge role in political attitudes. Various racial groups depict varying levels of support for political candidates, leaders, or subjects, depending on their racial background.

Prejudice describes the thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and beliefs that a person holds about a group. Prejudice is a prejudgment that originates outside actual experience and is not based on experience. Discrimination, on the other hand, refers to the actions that are directed against a certain group of people based on various aspects such as religion, age, race, and other indicators. Prejudice refers to attitudes and opinions while discrimination focuses on the actual behaviors against a group.

Race and ethnicity can be confusing at times because many people do not understand the difference between the two. Race is more one’s physical characteristics that categorize them into one of roughly five or six races. For example, being Hispanic, White, or Asain are types of races. However, these categories are very broad and encompass many different cultures and ways of life. When differentiating oneself through culture, tradition, language, or religion, you refer to your ethnicity. Ethnicity is a little more complex than race. In some ways, it is taught, passed down through generations and not genetically inherited. Ethnicity differentiates people within one race. Ethnicity is also not to be confused with nationality. Someone who is Italian may live in the United States, making their ethnicity Italian but nationality American, but not both American or both Italian.

respond no.2

My race is white, but my ethnicity is Serbian and Montenegrin. To me, my ethnicity means a lot, determining my religion, cultural upbringing, mannerisms, and global outlook. Because I am Serbian/Montenegrin, I was raised to be Eastern Orthodox, albeit Serbian Orthodox because it is more common in the United States. Further, since my mom immigrated at my age to the U.S., she brought with her a lot of her culture and way of life. Little things like the way she pronounces some words, some of the food we make, and some household rules (like taking off your shoes when entering someone’s house) are all traits she imparted on me from a young age. Although I do not speak Serbian or Montenegrin, I understand some words and I have an understanding of our history and traditional culture. My ethnicity shapes me a lot and allows me to feel connected with a broader network of people and family that live overseas.

Race is a complex topic, especially in a society as diverse and historically prejudiced as the United States. In a sense, race is very socially constructed. The reality is that race is a byproduct of evolution, allowing people to live in different environments. Thus, race is biologically mundane and rather unimportant. However, due to sociological ideals and beliefs, people began to feel “different” than others, in ways that led to issues like slavery, warfare, and overall discrimination. Race is important because as a global society, we are very aware of it and continue to differentiate ourselves based upon it. Racial history is important and must be acknowledged, yet even today people lay bias upon racial differences. Police brutality, the wage breakdown, and school admissions are all byproducts of a racially divided society. Race is indeed still important today yet in a way that is more dividing and harmful than unifying.

When differentiating prejudice and discrimination, it is important to understand that discrimination is putting prejudice into action. Prejudices are ideas and thoughts someone may harbor in their mind against a specific race or ethnicity, or microaggressions they may display in public. Discrimination, however, is the implication of laws or divisions in society that puts some people at a disadvantage to others. A very relevant example of this are the Jim Crow laws of the South and the discrimination they supported amongst Americans on the basis of skin color. Therefore, both are terrible concepts and discrimination is essentially the cumulation of intense prejudice that is enacted upon society.

LASHANTA’S POST:

Program Planning, Research, and Cultural Context

Culture is crucial for program modification and planning due to its influence on the participants. It referrers to accumulatively shared and learned values, customs, values, and beliefs within the society (Frierson et al., 2002). Any program must be based on the type of cultures that the community upholds and the impacts the program may have on the community members. Culture-based evaluation is important since it identifies specific cultures that must be avoided and benefit the program positively. Frierson et al. (2002) notes that ignoring cultures during project evaluation and modification puts the project in danger as well as the targeted population. It is recommendable for the researchers to be responsive and sensitive to the targeted population’s culture to avoid flaws and make the program recognizable. Notably, culture is important since most values and norms are promoted through social activities, which is detrimental to the community once ignored.

Program evaluation heavily relies on the cultural context and targeted population. In evaluating the program based on its omission or inclusion of the cultural context, the focus would be on how values, norms, and behaviors are integrated. The program will be evaluated as culture inclusive if it takes into account the cultural activities of the participants. According to Grinnell et al. (2015), culturally responsive evaluation is vital for community inclusion and increased outcomes. However, a culture-free program stresses social activities without necessarily integrating the norms and societal values. The program’s culture must be taken into consideration for a responsive culture evaluation (Grinnell et al., 2015). It also explains or fully describes the context of the program. A responsive culture evaluation integrates different multiethnic evaluation teams that include the voices of the underrepresented individuals in society. Therefore, a program must incorporate culture for it to be effective.

LESLEY’S POST:

“Culture” is not only a big word but it carries with it so much weight. To understand the importance of culture in research, one must understand that to each of us, culture will hold different meanings and values and much be understand that different does not mean bad, or wrong. Fierson, Hood, and Hughes (2002) expressed this importance as explaining the context of research being evaluated. Without such descriptions and understanding of the culture being studied, there is no practical reasoning behind the study or assessment.

“There is also the potential to do great harm if these contextual considerations are not recognized” (Netting, O’Conner, and Faurie, 2008, p. 215). In order to understand the reason for a program, one must understand the culture. For example, my research is based on the care of elderly people. In some cultures, there is no need for assisted living facilities because it is not only customary, it is expected that families tend to their own elders (Reno Valley Assisted Living & Retirement Center, 2020). Considering this, one might evaluate my research by the culture in which is being examined by whether to gauge if and how the elderly is being either neglected or abused. If there is a lack of cultural context, the validity, and integrity would be compromised.

Ways in which I will need to address cultural context is to examine my own culture versus the cultures in the research literature and examine any differences and/or exceptions. As of now, I do know that there are mixed cultural backgrounds in some of the literature I have researched and will need to address those differences.

Organizational Theory

Perception is a subtle, personal view of one’s self in context with the environment. Much of our upbringing influences the way we see and observe things that affect our interpretation, meaning, and judgment. As training is developmental in nature, we can develop or shape our perception to be as objective, unbiased, and progressive as we would want.

In the organizational context, our perception affects how we communicate among ourselves. Some factors such as those shown below may get in the way of understanding the truth within a message; thus, affecting our behaviors:

a. Stereotype
b. Prejudice
c. Discrimination
d. Selective Perception
e. Projection
f. Halo Effect
g. Tokenism
h. Intersectionality

Select three factors from the list and write an essay as to how your attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors are affected positively or negatively by them in a personal and organizational context. Back up with the latest research available.

Submit a 2-3 page paper (no more than 3 pages), exclusive of the cover page and the reference page. The paper should be double-spaced in Times New Roman font (or its equivalent), which is no greater than 12 points in size. The paper should cite at least 2 sources in APA format. The paper should be well-written. Check all content for grammar, spelling, and construction.
