BPCC-Mgmt of Correction Dis 2

Recruiting Employees in Corrections

Results indicate correctional systems face serious difficulties in recruiting and retaining an adequate staff of qualified correctional officers.

Correctional agencies are competing with other criminal justice, governmental and private agencies for potential applicants.

Predictions are that corrections will be second to the health care profession on the list of fields that are most likely to be affected by an upcoming shortage of workers.

Recruitment and selection are among the critical issues facing corrections, regardless of an agency’s size.  Operating with limited budgets and resources, correctional agencies will need to develop and implement new and creative recruiting methods.

For this discussion board, I would like for you to place yourself in the position as the Director of Recruiting at State Correctional Facility and you are in charge of recruiting new Correctional Officers.  Your facility administrator has asked you to think outside of the box and come up with creative, innovative, and unique ways you can recruit new Correctional Officers to work at your facility.   Discuss some of these ways on this board.

In addition, you can discuss ways you would focus on retaining these newly hired Correctional Officers by addressing these important factors:  morale; training; support (from management).

6238 Discussion: Creativity

Sternberg defines creativity as a drive resulting in the production of something “both original and worthwhile” (Laureate Education, 2007). He suggests that creative people demonstrate non-conforming attitudes toward commonly held societal conventions that hamper their creative pursuits, as well as demonstrating a consistent drive to attend to their creative interests. Creative individuals also show a willingness to take risks as well as criticism in the interest of improving their creative work.

For this Discussion, consider the arguments made in the video in this week’s Learning Resources. Think about ways that you have addressed problems, in particular the level of creativity you may have brought to solutions. Consider whether individuals can increase their own levels of creativity.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post an example either of a creative solution you developed to address a problem in your life or a creative improvement upon a solution that lacked innovative qualities. Consider the notion of whether creativity can be enhanced. Post an argument for or against this assertion and explain why. Support your argument with reference to the Learning Resources.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Long Term Care or Residential Facility

This week students will find an article related to any Long Term and Residential Care Issue.  It could positive or negative.  Please make sure it is from this year, at latest last year. Nothing older!  You are going to give a summary of the article and your reaction to the article.

  • The initial discussion post must be at least 250-350 words of content, including at least ONE scholarly source.
  • All initial posts need a reference. Your initial post should never be all opinion.  You need to refer to the reading and the required resources and prove your information with valid data.
  • A full discussion of the issues presented by the questions posed for the week.
  • Use of reliable, APA formatted sources (No Wikipedia).
  • Correct grammar and spelling.
  • No information is quoted or copied.
  • All information is in the student’s own words.
  • Please use correctly formatted in-text citations and references. Less than that shows a disrespect for the source. There is a particular way in which these are to be formatted. Without the proper formatting, the grade suffers.
  • Do NOT use the citation machine.  The citation machine only provides you with the information you provide to it.  If you’re unaware that there is particular information needed and do not provide it, the reference you receive will be incorrect.  It will not be the fault of the citation machine.
  • USE intext citations.  These are necessary for the post.  For each area you discuss and each idea, you present you MUST add the author and date in parenthesis to your post. In-text citations should be a part of each section that you write when what you write is an idea you learned through your reading.  Even if you read something that you may have known a bit about, but you have still gained more information, you need to put a citation in your work.   This includes all information you write about, even when it is being discussed in your own words.
  • References should be listed for each citation you use.
  • DO NOT copy information from any source even if you’re giving credit to the source.  You can use one quote in a post.  More than that will drop your grade.
  • Avoid the use of quotations.  Your rubric discourages this by placing a limit on the number of quotations that are allowed under each grading section.  You may write a great post, but the use of too many quotations places it in a lower category for grading.
  • Avoid copying references from unaccepted sources.  Many of the references are incorrect, with dates that are wrong or titles that are not complete.  If you use this and it’s incorrect, it is your grade that suffers.
  • Do not add scholarly resources that you are not using just because.   You are asked to use a scholarly resource for your post over and above your etext.  If you are using a resource that is listed in your reference list and does not appear as information in your post, then it’s not actually used.

The initial post is 250-350 words of content. The initial discussion post must be at least 250-350 words of content, including at least one scholarly source. Helpful tips on how to reference and citations, please follow it. I’ll give you the template for a reference for an etext and for an article and for a citation for an either. Here is the template for an electronic text: Last name, F. M. (Year). Title of book [eBook edition]. Publisher. URL In the above example, the F.M. stands for the first initial (upper case). And middle initial (upper case).   They show you the way the font should appear, such as italicized as in the title of the book and also how the title is written (with only the first word’s first letter in upper case).  Once you know how they describe the nuances, you can apply it to all of their examples.  For an article in a scholarly publication: Last name, F. M., & Lastname, F. M. (Year). Title of the article. Title of Periodical, Vol. (Issue), page numbers. DOI or Last name, F. M., & Last name, F. M. (Year). Title of the article. Title of Periodical, Vol. (Issue), page numbers. Retrieved October 11, 2020, from URL       URL= the link to the website.  For the citation after the paragraph of paraphrased text use (Author, year).  If you have quoted use (Author, year, p. x), if there is no page, you can refer to the paragraph quoted by using (Author, year, para x).

Expatriate Hiring: International HRM Scenario

Dilworth Inc., a U.S. electronics manufacturer, has decided to take advantage of the very low salaries in the developing nation of Chad in Central Africa. Other global organizations have had a very difficult time maintaining employees in this county. The number of western-style amenities are low; there is a limited variety of food and no fast food. There is a French country club with some amenities. Cell phone coverage is limited and in general, living in the capitol city of Anjemina is a challenge for most Americans. There is very little to do in the country except work, so psychological difficulties arise from living in an impoverished nation. There are three schools but the educational quality is limited by the challenges of attracting and retaining faculty and staff. Spouses and children who accompany the employee often leave after a year. For those who choose to stay, leave is generous. Because of the conditions in the country, employees and their families can join the frequent trips the embassy’s Community Liaison Officer arranges to Europe and to other countries in Africa.

As the HR professional at Dilworth, you need to hire a middle management staff member in operations, finance, marketing, and human resources. For this discussion, respond to the following:

  • How would you go about selecting an employee candidate for this assignment in Chad?
  • What cautions would you offer to potential candidates?
  • Would you offer any special compensation to attract and retain the employee? Why or why not? If so, what type of special compensation?

Unit 3 Project

Unit 3: Satire Unit Project

Part 1:

For this Unit Project, you will be writing a satirical essay addressing a problem in your community. You may choose community on any level: local, school, national, or world. You may choose a topic as large as global warming or as focused as uniforms in your high school. I recommend choosing something on the national scale for ease of research.

  • Click on the link in the Red Box to view the Project Rubrics for this project.

Possible topics could include:

  • Global warming
  • Health care
  • Food stamps or unemployment benefits
  • Gun control
  • Immigration
  • NSA domestic surveillance
  • Gay marriage
  • Marijuana legalization
  • National debt
  • Education reform

These are a few suggestions, but you may choose any topic that you can satirize. (The exception to this is abortion rights. This topic is off-limits for this essay.)

Once you have chosen a topic, your paper should explain the debate:

  • What are the arguments on either side?
  • What logical, ethical, and emotional appeals are used?
  • Who are the key figures in the debate (politicians, actors, news pundits, etc)?
  • Use a minimum of four quotes, properly cited.

Then, propose a ridiculous solution to the problem. Proceed with your paper by using logical, ethical, and emotional appeals to make a satirical case as to why your ridiculous solution is the “best” solution.

Your whole essay should be written in a satirical tone, in the way that Swift does in Modest Proposal. (You can also refer to Stephen Colbert as an excellent modern example.) Sell your solution!

You must use all three of the following satirical devices:

  • Exaggeration or hyperbole
  • Understatement
  • Irony or Sarcasm

Part 2

Part 2

Now that you have constructed your satirical argument, turn that into a multi-media presentation. Turn your argument into either a video or a PowerPoint presentation.

Here, give your argument more dimension. Your presentation should include a variety of additional materials:

  • Video clips from key figures in the debate
  • Sound
    • Music
    • A recording of your voice
  • Pictures
  • Animations

This essay should be between two and five pages (500-1250 words) in length. Your final draft should be saved and submitted as .doc or .pdf file. It should be in 12-point font in Times New Roman. Your presentation must be at least three minutes long or include a minimum of ten slides.

10% of your grade will be on grammar and mechanics. Write as clearly and correctly as you can. This means that 90% of your grade is based on your ideas – however, you will not earn an A if you do not proofread carefully and check for errors.

Most importantly, remember this is a culminating project for the Satire Unit. Your essay should show everything you have learned throughout the unit.

Discussion #2 Prenatal Discussion

Prenatal Discussion (Discussion 2)

For this discussion, you will be submitting an original post of at least 250 words and a reply post of at least 100 words. Select one option and post your original discussion as well as a reply post in that same discussion. A score of 100% will earn you 2 points towards your final grade.

Option 1: As you have read in your textbook, infertility is on the rise for a number of reasons. Please share your own personal experiences with the process of “getting pregnant” (you are not required to share any information that makes you uncomfortable, only what you are willing to disclose).

If you have not had any personal experiences with the process of conception, then ask your mothers, sisters, or any of your friends who have.

Option 2: Females: Describe your own experiences with the birth process, if applicable. If you haven’t had any personal experience(s) with the birth process, ask your mothers, sisters, or friends what their experiences were like and share those. Males: Describe your own experiences as fathers, if applicable. What was the birth process like for you? If you have no experience, you may ask your family members to describe theirs, or you may discuss what you think will be your role-based upon what you have learned in this course. What is the role of a father during the pregnancy and during the birth process?

Remember the criteria for the discussions:

  • 250-word original post
  • 100-word reply post
  • Covers every detail in the discussion description
  • “>Submitted on time
  • College-level grammar, punctuation, and spell-checked

This discussion is worth 2 points. Your work will not be available for grading by your instructor until you have submitted the two posts. The Rubric shown below will be used to grade your work.

6238: Wk 9 Discussion 2: Influence of Emotion

Consider the following scenario:

As he makes his online travel reservations, Robert is overcome with a sense of anxiety. His fear of flying fills him with dread at the thought of taking an airplane. Robert’s appraisal of flying (his interpretation of the situation) instills an irrational fear. Robert mentions his concern to a close friend who works for the airline industry. His friend shares the following information—travel by air is one of the safest modes of transportation. The drive to the airport is statistically far more dangerous than a flight. Robert’s fear decreases in light of the new information. This is an example of a cognitive process helping an individual to regulate an emotional response.

For this Discussion, consider how cognitive processes can influence regulation of emotional responses. Also consider the influence of appraisal on emotional responses. Then think about how conscious and unconscious cognitive processes influence emotion.

Post a brief explanation of how cognitive processes can influence regulation of emotional responses. Then explain the influence of appraisal on emotional responses. Finally, provide one example of a conscious cognitive process and one example of an unconscious cognitive process and explain how each influence emotion. Justify your response using the Learning Resources and current literature.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Week 6 Assignment (Data Mining)

Chapter 9 Cluster Analysis
Answer the following questions in a point by point fashion.  NOT an essay. Please ensure to use the Author, YYYY APA citations with any content brought into the assignment.

  1. For sparse data, discuss why considering only the presence of non-zero values might give a more accurate view of the objects than considering the actual magnitudes of values. When would such an approach not be desirable?
  2. Describe the change in the time complexity of K-means as the number of clusters to be found increases.
  3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of treating clustering as an optimization problem. Among other factors, consider efficiency, non-determinism, and whether an optimization-based approach captures all types of clusterings that are of interest.
  4. What is the time and space complexity of fuzzy c-means? Of SOM? How do these complexities compare to those of K-means?
  5. Explain the difference between likelihood and probability.
  6. Give an example of a set of clusters in which merging based on the closeness of clusters leads to a more natural set of clusters than merging based on the strength of connection (interconnectedness) of clusters.

Requirement:  Provide a questions and Answer Paper with six (6) Questions specifically answered one after the other You  must use properly formatted  APA in-text citations and scholarly reference . NO Copying and Pasting from the Internet or other past student paper. There is no redo for plagarism.
