2. Using the techniques/concepts shown in the videos, create an excel spreadsheet…that contains headers in the first row for “Scenario” in column A, “Exercises” in column B, “Chapter Quizzes” in Column C, 4 exams in columns D, E, F, G, then “Combined Exams” in Column H, “Mini-Project” in Column I, “Total Percent” in Column J, and “Earned Grade” in Column K.

A few pointers:

Column H = you want this to equal the highest 3 of 4 exams percentages from Columns C, D, E, F. There is more than one way to do this. Here is a simple one… if we are in Cell H2, you would type in the formula:  =(sum(D2:G2)-min(D2:G2))/3

What that formula does is add up all four percentages, then subtract the lowest score, and then divide the result by 3 to get an average percentage across the top three scores. Remember the double parentheses (as shown) so it does it correctly.

Column J: to get total percent, you want to rescale the percentages across this database so they are correctly weighted according to the class syllabus. So Cell J2’s formula could be: =B2*.05+C2*.05+H2*.75+I2*.15

Column K: to get the correct major grade letter to automatically merge in, you need to use a set of nested “if-then” statements. An “if-then” statement in excel has three parts: first part is the lookup test, second part is what to do if it is true, third part is what to do if it is false). K2 could read: =if(J2<.6,”F”,if(J2<.7,”D”,if(J2<.8,”C”,if(J2<.9,”B”,”A”))))

Notice that each third part (if false) is the next investigation level so it becomes ‘nested’.

3. Create five different rows of data in Rows 2 to 6 containing different scenarios (i.e., different percentages in scores) showing how different scores would combine to arrive at a total forecasted score–pick any values you want between 70% and 100% to go in them.

4. Save the excel spreadsheet. Upload a copy of it here for participation grading.

Note: If you become stuck, reread the instructions and rewatch the videos. If needed, add questions to the class forum on the topics you are working on mastering.

5 assignment

5.2 Assignment: Innovation at IKEA

Getting Started

In this assignment, you will apply the theory and principles learned in Chapter 13 on the subject of the leader’s “situation” to a case study.

The case study is related to the IKEA Corporation, headquartered in Sweden, which sells products around the world. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder, has led the organization through significant growth from its humble beginning over 50 years ago.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Identify team dysfunctions and develop appropriate interventions to drive enhanced organizational performance.
  • Differentiate and match appropriate interventions to organizational challenges.

Resources

  • Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience

Background Information

The situation in which a leader finds him or herself is dynamic and full of challenges. Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2019) write:

…we are coming to understand that the situation is one of the most powerful variables in the leadership equation. It is important to understand how the situation influences leaders and followers and, furthermore, that the situation is not just a ‘given’ that leaders and followers must adapt to; sometimes, at least, leaders and followers can change the situation and thereby enhance the likelihood of desired outcomes. (p. 507)

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Read Chapter 13 of our textbook, including all Profiles and Highlights for added perspective on the chapter’s content.
  3. Read the minicase at the end of Chapter 13, “Innovation at IKEA.”
  4. Write a paper in response to the questions listed below. Include a minimum of three citations from the assigned reading in the textbook (not the case itself) in which you apply the text concepts to the case. (Note: It is not necessary to do any outside research beyond the information in the minicase and the assigned reading.) Provide a detailed explanation for your evaluation that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking.
    1. Which type (or types) of organizational culture do you think are dominant at IKEA?
    2. Consider Schein’s four key organizational culture factors as described in Highlight 13.6. What examples can you identify within the IKEA organization that contributes to the company’s strong culture?
    3. Do you think IKEA’s distinctive culture will continue to be a competitive advantage in the years to come? If so, what do you think are ways it can be sustained and reinforced? If not, why do you think the culture will not continue to be a competitive advantage?
  5. Your paper should be 400–500 words in length. Use proper spelling, grammar, and APA style in your case study paper and any sources cited. For questions on APA style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
  6. When you have completed your case study paper, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop.

5.3 Assignment: Contingency Theories

Getting Started

For this assignment, you will read Chapter 14, “Contingency Theories of Leadership,” in our textbook. The authors offer valuable research and insights into the five most popular contingency theories of leadership:

  • Leader-Member Exchange Theory
  • Normative Decision Model
  • Situational Leadership Model
  • Contingency Model
  • Path-Goal Theory

We will discuss a leadership example with which you are familiar and apply a contingency theory that best describes that situation.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Discuss contingency theories of leadership in an applied setting.

Resources

  • Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience

Background Information

Understanding leadership behavior in the context of a leader’s situation can provide valuable insights on how best to respond to situational challenges that result in organizational success.

In his classic text, Leadership in Organizations, Gary Yukl (2002) comments on the situational impact on a leader’s effectiveness:

People in leadership positions face relentless and conflicting demands on their time. There is a constant stream of requests, problems, inquiries, and reports from the many different people who interact with the leader. The people who interact with a leader frequently communicate role expectations about appropriate behavior. Effective leaders seek to understand demands and constraints, and they adapt their behavior accordingly. They are able to reconcile the role conflicts, and they take advantage of role ambiguity as an opportunity for discretionary action. They seek to exploit opportunities, expand their range of choices, and shape the impressions formed by others about their competence and expertise. (p. 424)

5.4 Discussion: Groups and Teams Rocket Model

Getting Started

In this discussion, you will learn the tools to both develop a high-performance team and diagnose team dysfunction. You will learn about each stage of Curphy’s Rocket Model, a simplified model of team effectiveness which is both prescriptive and diagnostic. You will learn about each of the eight components of the Rocket Model and their connection to each of the other Rocket Model elements.

The first week of this assignment required a description of a dysfunctional team situation and an analysis using the Rocket Model to identify the area of dysfunction. For this week, your response posts will review and analyze the dysfunctional team situations described by your classmates in the 4.4 Discussion.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

  • Integrate the concepts of Curphy’s Rocket Model in the development of high-performance teams.

Resources

  • Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience

Background Information

In describing the Rocket Model in Chapter 12, Skills for Developing Others, the authors of the Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience text write, “Building a team can be analogous to building a rocket. Just as rockets operate in different environments…so must teams clearly define the context in which they operate” (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2019, p. 482). Curphy’s Rocket Model identifies in sequential order the components of team building which are necessary to ensure a high performing team.

This assignment incorporates what you learn in Chapter 12 of Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy’s text and applies those lessons to your analysis of your classmates’ posts.

Instructions

  1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
  2. Review Chapter 12 of our textbook, specifically focusing on the Rocket Model in the section titled “Building High-Performance Teams: The Rocket Model,” including Figures 12.2, 12.3, and 12.4.
  3. Conduct a critical analysis of at least two other classmates’ posts from the 4.4 Discussion that discussed dysfunctional team situations. Address the following questions in your response to each classmate:
    1. How appropriate is the analysis of your classmate with regard to the Rocket Model component which was the basis for the team dysfunction?
    2. Based on the situation described, do you agree with the suggested course of corrective action?
  4. Each response should be at least 200 words in length and cite one reference from the Rocket Model for each question in Step 3 above. The focus for your critical analysis is not whether or not you agree with your classmate, but how well was the position presented.
  5. In addition to commenting on the critical thinking displayed in your classmate’s initial post, offer your comments and opinions on their application of the Rocket Model to the situation described. Do you agree with their assessment? Are there alternative conclusions that could reasonably be reached? Your response to each question above should be one paragraph in length and cite one academic source.
  6. Interactions are expected to:
    1. Clearly and thoroughly address the prompt(s) with meaningful information that shows critical thinking.
    2. Introduce your own ideas and questions to add greater depth to the discussion, rather than restating what your classmates have shared. (Include much more than “Great post,” or “I agree.”)
    3. Refer to relevant course concepts as you discuss your learning together.
    4. Develop insightful conversation by directly addressing your classmates’ ideas.
    5. Demonstrate professionalism.
  7. Your response posts are due by the end of the workshop.

5.5 Assignment: Virtuous Business

Getting Started

As we stated in the 1.5 Exercise, the Virtuous Business Model provides a framework that uses rigorous market analysis to determine that virtuous leadership contributes to business success. It also makes the case that free enterprise capitalism is wholly consistent with spiritual depth and moral commitment.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Apply the concepts of the Virtuous Business Model to ethics and change within organizations.

Resources

  • Textbook: Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience
  • Video: Lewin’s Force Field Analysis Model
  • Article: Virtuous Leaders & Organizations
  • Article: Making Business Virtuous
  • Webpage: “Wells Fargo Fake Account Scandal”
  • Webpage: “Wells Fargo Unauthorized Account Openings:  A Case Study for Bank Board Directors”
  • Webpage: “What Are the Real Lessons of the Wells Fargo Case?”
  • Article: “The Wells Fargo Cross-Selling Scandal”

Background Information

Hein and Wilkinson (2015) state that the virtuous business model is the only antidote capable of restoring trust in the free market system. What is recognized is that now, more than ever, there is a need for a clear distinction between values-neutral capitalism and virtuous business.

They continue, stating that the objective of becoming or remaining a virtuous business is the overarching goal for a business. An organization that steadfastly strives to be virtuous gains the greatest opportunity for longevity and provides the greatest benefit to society (Hein & Wilkinson, 2015, p.2). In this assignment, you will review the Wells Fargo banking scandal, applying the concepts of the virtuous business model to that review.

  3. Read “Virtuous Leaders & Organizations” from the Spring/Summer 2017 issue of The DeVoe Report.
  4. Watch the video Lewin’s Force Field Analysis Model
  5. Review the following Wells Fargo articles and reflect on the circumstances and outcomes surrounding the scandal:
    1. “Wells Fargo Unauthorized Account Openings: A Case Study for Bank Board Directors”
    2. “What are the Real Lessons of the Wells Fargo Case?”
    3. “The Wells Fargo Cross Selling Scandal”
    4. “Wells Fargo Fake Accounts Scandal”
  6. Write a paper incorporating information from Making Business Virtuous and the Wells Fargo scandal references. Using critical thinking, sound business acumen and clear ethical and moral thinking, respond to the following:
    1. Review the five characteristics of a virtual business as described in Making Business Virtuous and describe how Wells Fargo violated each of these. Your description should be at least one paragraph in length per characteristic. Note:  the description of these characteristics can be found in the “Virtuous Business” section, which begins on page 6.
    2. Analyze the numerous operational shortcomings in the Wells Fargo case. Identify two that you feel contributed significantly to the development and perpetuation of the inappropriate company conduct. In one paragraph for each, describe two action items that could be implemented to incorporate virtuous principles within the organization to address the two behavioral items you selected.
    3. In one final paragraph, summarize what you believe to be the most significant infraction of all committed by Wells Fargo, what you believe to be the underlying motivation for this non-virtuous corporate behavior.
  7. Your paper should be 600 words in length. Use proper spelling, grammar, and APA style in your paper and for any sources cited. For questions on APA style, go to OCLS APA Writing Styles Guides.
  8. When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit a copy to your instructor by the end of the workshop.

Job Application Letter

Job Application Letter

(Attached file below is “your works in Art major”. Your Job Application Letter must based on “your works in Art major”. You can copy and paste from “your works in Art major”, but you must to put more emphasis (and provide more specific detail about) how and why these projects exemplify specific skills that advance your professional goals (maybe be more specific about what those goals are?)

This assignment asks you to link your works in Art major to your career goals by finding a job which company named Signs of Seattle ( https://signsofseattle.com/ ), selecting a few work samples appropriate to that position, and writing a 400 word application letter.  Copy the actual job language & qualifications from the ad after your letter. This is necessary so reviewers can evaluate whether you’ve actually spoken to their requirements.

Be sure you make evidence-based claims about what you’re capable of doing.  The letter, in other words, should discuss your work in school as evidence for your abilities.  Don’t just say: “I’m a skilled leader in teamwork situations”; instead, say “My work in (insert course or position) shows I have leadership skills because I’ve done  (insert details).”

Use easier sentences to write. No quotes from any website or resource.

Essay – Employment Law

Assume that an unfair labor practice charge was filed against your company by several employees and three prospective employees. See the form linked below indicating the charge, which outlines the scenario below: FORM NLRB-501: Case 4689-3

On July 29, 2016, Delphi Golf, Inc. and the union entered a collective bargaining agreement. The majority of the company’s employees covered by the agreement had not designated the union as their collective-bargaining representative. The agreement contains a union-security clause requiring employees who are members in good standing of the union to maintain their membership in good standing and all other employees to become members of the union on or before the 31st day following the effective date of the agreement or the date of their hire. The union instructed Delphi Golf, Inc. not to employ three servers for restaurant positions in the company because the servers were not members of the union. The company is an employer within the meaning of Section 2(2) of the act engaged in commerce within the meaning of Section 2(6) and (7) of the act.

Explain in a two-page essay the process and steps your company will have to take to defend this action. Explain the defenses to the action and if the union employees have valid claims. What actions by the employer should have been done differently, if at all? What actions by the union should have been done differently? Who, if anyone, is liable? You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA style citations.

Talk about a tradition or culture

Instructions:1. Select a tradition from a culture of your choosing.     a) this could be a tradition or practice from your own cultural identity (this is a great chance to tell a part of your own story or to get in touch with it, depending on where you’re at in your cultural journey).    b) this could be a tradition or practice that you’ve always wanted to research and learn some more about. 2. This tradition could be something formalized like aholiday or ceremony (Hanukkah, Chinese New Yearetc.). It could also be something informal like agreeting practice or behavior (touch, use of timeetc.) so there is really a lot of latitude here.3. Analyze the tradition in terms of what it representsabout the culture’s world view. You will want to be able to:a. offer a thorough explanation of how the tradition ispracticed.b. What values does this tradition reinforce aboutthe culture.4. You will want to conduct research for this project ontwo levels:a. Research about the practice and how it is carriedoutb. Research about how the tradition interacts withthe culture.(If you are doing a culture that youare not familiar with, definitely make sure youhave research to help you support yourconclusions about which pieces of world view aresustained in this tradition.  This research might be  first hand experience as well. c. There are resources to get you started in ourweek #2 module. They are:

  •  The Hofstede Center links loaded in the module
  •  World view components notes that help parallel the reading in the book.

d. The key to this project  is to establish a thesis thatconnects the tradition to the material discussed.  Below, is a sample thesis:The rituals associated with the Latino Quinceneara offers insight into the collectivism of Mexican culture. Part II: Designing your presentationI want this project to be meaningful and interesting to you and I want this to be a chance to tell your story, if that’s something you are hungry to do.  To those ends, there are multiple ways you can choose to present this project. Select a way that makes sense to you as a good way to present your tradition.  Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences suggests, “In order to capture the full range of abilities and talents that people possess, Gardner theorizes that people do not have just an intellectual capacity, but have many kinds of intelligence, including musical, interpersonal, spatial-visual, and linguistic intelligences.” So, tap into your intelligences with this project:

Option #1 Write a research paper about the tradition or practice you chose.

This  is an option that tends to fit well with people who ascribe to a linguistic/verbal intelligence and enjoy reading and writing as a channel for expressing their thoughts and ideas.

1. Write a 5-7 page double spaced typed paper that explores the topic you’ve selected

2.  The paper should use 3 or more sources to support the information and analysis shared.

3. The paper should adhere to the guidelines provided above about the project.

Here’s a sample introduction that shows how that thesis might be incorporated into the introduction of the paper:“Just like a page out of a fairy tale, the storybook tale has finally come true…”(Quinceneara Boutique.com), so opens the invitation to arguably the most significant day in a young Hispanic girl’s life, the day she turns fifteen and becomes a woman in the eyes of her culture. The traditions and practices surrounding a Quinceneara symbolize coming of age in a culture that values collectivism. By looking at three of the rituals contained in the Quinceneara,, one can better understand how this day celebrates the taking of one’s adult place in a collectivist culture. This paper will explore the collectivist values sustained in the rituals of: Selecting the court, changing of the shoes and finally, the last doll. Then go into the body of your paper–your preview statement at the end of the intro has already identified your three main points, so you’re set.  The first main point in the paper will be selecting the court —talk about how the court is selected, the significance and how that ritual represents some aspect of collectivism.  I want this paper to be a meaningful tie in between theory and practice. You should be able to make excellent connections between chapter 2 and 4 and 5  in the text and the practice you choose to explore.  Please let me help you make this project a meaningful one. I am here to offer guidance.Other options here: You can write a poem or compose a story that speaks to and represents the cultural tradition and include analysis, so that you’re walking us through  the connections to the project and the unit material.  You can film yourself telling the story or delivering the poem in a way that is reflective of the  culture.Option #2  Physical PresentationThis option offers the opportunity to explore a cultural tradition or practice through more kinesthetic avenues.  This can be great for kinesthetic topics such as dance or nonverbal communication practices. An example might be: looking at the tradition of flamenco dancing.  If you actually do flamenco dancing, you could have someone film you dancing, and then you could film your discussion and analysis of the dance and what it reveals about the cultural world view it is associated with. This will require you being able to upload the film. Perhaps you’d like to do flamenco dancing but you yourself are not a flamenco dancer, that’s fine. You can share film of someone else–perhaps from an event you’ve attended (with their permission of course) and then you can interview experts on film and film your own responses. Do you have a favorite recipe? Put on your own cooking show and show us how to make your favorite recipe and what it represents about the culture’s world view. So– be creative. There are a lot of ways to do this option!! Unsure if you’re on the right track? Check it out with me. Option #3  Musical IntelligenceUse this option to explore  a cultural tradition through music.  This could be by using music as a channel for exploring the tradition (for example, how does the music associated with Rosh Hashanah reflect the values of Jewish world view and the holiday?) OR  literally looking at the musical traditions of a culture (how do the instruments and songs for instance reflect the world view of the culture).  You can film this or make a film from other resourcesYou can  compose a musical piece that embodies the culture (and analyze it of course). You can perform a musical piece from the culture and talk about it (on film, or through power point slides). Option #4 Naturalistic IntelligenceThis is a chance to express a cultural worldview through nature This could be through a look at traditional foods or cooking methods used in a culture and what that represents about the world view. (make your own cooking show). This could be by constructing a small landscape display or demonstrating a gardening technique (ie bonsai or topiary). These are just some ideas, let your mind brainstorm!!Option #5 Visual Spatial IntelligenceConstruct a drawing or painting  that speaks to  the cultural world view tradition you’ve selected. Be able to analyze and explain the significance of this drawing or painting in terms of what it represents about the world view.  This might be the story told in the painting and/or it might be the methods used in executing the art work (the way it’s painted, or the colors used, or the technique used). Option #6 Interpersonal intelligencePeople are the keepers of cultural history. Take time to film interviews with the people around you– this is great if you’ve selected to look at your own world view.  Interview grandparents, relatives, community leaders about the components of world view, listen and share their stories. ONCE YOU HAVE SELECTED AN OPTION,  I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU SO THAT WE CAN CLARIFY YOUR PROJECT AND THE GRADING RUBRIC FOR IT SINCE EACH OF THE 6 OPTIONS WILL HAVE ITS OWN RUBRIC.   PreviousNext

Concert Analysis

Can’t make it to a live event? Since this is an online course you have the option of watching a video of a concert. Not exactly the same as being there (please treat yourself to a live performance if at all possible), but you may choose between Beethoven or Berlioz, or another composer & piece from the Keeping Score website (with instructor permission).

Do not complete this listening assignment until you have completed Unit 6 – Romantic as you are expected to use vocabulary learned in those units as well as refer to concepts from the era and how they are incorporated in the music.

1. READ: assignment guidelines and grading rubric (if you haven’t already).

2. BACKGROUND: Follow the Keeping Score link to learn about your chosen composer & their music (much like you’d read notes in a program if you attended a concert – except this is more fun!).

3. Choose which composer/symphony you’d like to explore:

  • Beethoven, Symphony No. 5 (“The Call of Fate”) Follow the link below to watch and listen to the entire Symphony No. 5. Be sure to listen for the various ways Beethoven incorporates his 4 note motive (“da-da-da-DAH!”) in different ways and different voices in each movement.
  • If you want to listen to a different classically-oriented music piece (i.e. a different one from the Keeping Score website), contact instructor for approval and include link to concert.

§ Explore policy creation for incident response for a health care organization.

Assignment Requirements

You are a security professional for a large, private health care organization. Users have access to file and application servers, as well as data storage facilities that contain customer health information and personally identifiable information (PII).

Sean, your manager, has been asked to provide the latest version of the organization’s incident response policy. To his knowledge, no policy exists. He has asked you to research and create an incident response policy.

For this assignment:

1. Look for at least two incident response policies for organizations of a similar type to your organization.

2. Download NIST “Computer Security Incident Handling Guide” SP 800-61 Rev 2 located at https://www.nist.gov/publications/computer-security-incident-handling-guide.

3. Based on your research, create an initial draft of a high-level incident response policy for your organization. Consider Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other health care–related compliance requirements.

4. Create a summary report that includes the draft policy and justifies the content you included in the draft policy.

5. Provide citations for your sources.
