Seeking Treatment

Willingness to see professional treatment for psychological problems differs across cultures, and a number of factors are typically involved in such decisions. Imagine for a moment that you have recently been suffering from significant symptoms of depression, much more than you ever have previously in your life. You cannot seem to shake these feelings no matter what you try, and your normal ways of handling your depressive affect are not working. You have noticed changes in your appetite, sleeping patterns, enjoyment of activities and work productivity. Those around you are concerned about you as they are seeing the changes as well. What would it take for you to seek professional help for your depression? What factors would be involved in your decision to seek therapy?

When constructing your response, try to answer not only the two questions above, but these questions as well: Would the gender, racial/ethnic background, religious and political beliefs or sexual orientation of the therapist concern you? Would the level of graduate education of your therapist matter to you (i.e., seeing a master’s trained therapist versus a therapist with a doctoral degree)? Would you prefer to see a younger or more mature therapist? Would it matter if the therapist had never dealt with the problems you are dealing with? How would those around you view your treatment? Would you prefer to see a therapist one-on-one or participate in group psychotherapy?

Exploring Your Future Career Path

Exploring Your Future Career Path

Instead of seeing a career as something that you discover, see it as something that you choose. You don’t find the right career. You create it.… There’s a big difference between these two approaches. Thinking that there’s only one “correct” choice for your career can lead to anxiety: Did I choose the right one? What if I made a mistake?

Viewing your career as a creation helps you relax. You don’t have to worry about finding the “right” career. Choose a career today, knowing that you can choose again later.

—David Ellis, From Master Student to Master Employee

Today you will engage in a career self-assessment to help you dig deeper into your understanding and exploration of your chosen career field. Work through this process even though you have already declared a major and you may know what career you would like to pursue. This exercise will either validate your choice or motivate you to explore more options.

In Week 1, you identified your personal values and interests. Now, think about how your personal values can guide your future career path and career planning research.

Part 1

In this activity, you will explore the university’s student career planning resources (CareerQuest, Vault, Steppingblocks, and Candid Career) and complete a career self-assessment. Let’s take a moment to look at some of the features available within each career planning resource tool.

Career Services offers current students and alumni easy access to career-related support and resources. Whether you are a career changer entering the workforce for the first time or an experienced professional looking to climb the corporate ladder, the Career Services website provides you with professional development tools applicable for any stage of your career.

CareerQuest is the university’s online platform that connects you to the university’s Career Services. As a student, you can use this platform to discover and apply for internship and job opportunities, browse resources and online tools available to you, register for events, including virtual and in person recruiter sessions, online webinars, and career fairs, access Community Connect for quick connections or extended connections with mentors who can offer career-related advice, set up an in-person, video, phone, or email appointment to meet with a career advisor.

Vault is a website that provides comprehensive information on jobs, companies, and industries to help job seekers learn about and launch their target career. Each year, Vault compiles an influential list of rankings, ratings, and reviews on thousands of companies, jobs, and internships.

Steppingblocks serves as a data-powered career exploration tool where you can take a deep dive into over 60 million personal career journeys, and unlock the skills and education needed to get hired.

CandidCareer provides thousands of informational interview videos featuring industry professionals. Get the inside scoop on careers and advice that will help you with your job search.

In this part of the activity, you will complete the following tasks:

Part 2

Now that you have completed the career self-assessment, leverage your assessment results to help identify two potential professional career paths you could be interested in pursuing, based on your current academic program and current career goals. Depending on whether you are researching your first professional career, changing careers, or are simply interested in advancing your current career, you will now be able to leverage one or more of the research tools discussed below.

In this activity, complete the following tasks:

  • Access the CareerQuest website select Tools > select Career Research.
  • Review the Vault Demo video and access the Vault website (first-time professional); or review the Steppingblocks Demo video and access the Steppingblocks website (career changer/career advancement professional).
  • Explore CandidCareer for Business careers of interest (all).

Reflect on the personal motivations, values, and interests you identified in Week 1 as you consider your career options. Respond to each of the following:

  • List the requirements and jobs skills needed to be successful. What skills do you still need? How could you get them?
  • List the first steps that can lead to your long-term goals. What job titles might you seek upon graduation? Will you need any special certifications or qualifications at that time? If so, what are they, and how will you attain them?
  • What did you learn from your self-assessment?

Concept Analysis in the Literature

 Walden week 3 assignment

Review of research literature is a beneficial strategy that can be employed for concept analysis. In undertaking this strategy, you seek to understand how others have defined a particular concept, including the steps that have been utilized to arrive at this definition. As members of the nursing field engage in multiple concept analyses, they can begin to develop consensus for concept definitions and/or revise them as necessary.

Note: The concept and practice problem you select will be your focus next week as well, when you explore the relationship between concept analysis and theory development.

To prepare:

  • Select a concept related to a practice problem of interest to you. You may use the concept and practice problem you selected for the Discussion.
  • Using the Walden Library, find and read at least two articles that demonstrate concept analysis for your selected practice problem.

By Day 7 of this Week

Write a 2- to 3-page paper that summarizes the steps of the concept analysis process utilized in each article. Include in your summary the following information for each article:

  • What is the definition of the concept?
  • How could or does the definition differ from its use in nursing and health care versus in other disciplines?
  • What characteristics define the concept? How do these apply to nursing and clinical practice?

Example of paper is below:

Concept Analysis in the Literature: Spirituality Concept analysis is a process that helps to distinguish defining characteristics of a concept and its structure (Nuopponen, 2010). Walker and Avant find the primary use of a concept analysis is to determine the structure of a concept, break it down into simpler elements of the design, remove what is considered vague information, and clarify a definition for the concept (Nuopponen, 2010). Even knowing that spirituality plays an important role in healthcare, how it is defined as a concept by nurses as part of the care delivery system is an area that shows the need for further research with an emphasis on an operational definition of spirituality, and how it can be applied to finding evidence that will improve patient care. Both articles reviewed followed similar processes with concept analysis based predominantly on finding a more concrete way to define spirituality, and how it is used within the nursing profession. The purpose of this paper is to look at the concept analysis of spirituality in nursing and define how spirituality is important to the nursing practice and differs from use in other disciplines. Definition of Spirituality Agrimson and Taft (2009) review nursing theories such as Rogers’ Science of Unitary Human Beings, the Neuman Systems Model, and Parse’s Theory of Human Becoming to develop an overreaching definition of spirituality that is used in nursing practice. Agrimson and Taft (2009) found in the literature review that most nurses tend to group the theory of spirituality with religion even when religion is never mentioned by a patient. The results concluded that spirituality, without religion, allows for individuals to create a purpose and meaning in life (Agrimson & Taft, 2009). Spirituality includes a need for the love of self and others, finding hope, understanding forgiveness, and finding a purpose to life and death (Agrimson & Taft, 2009). https://www.coursehero.com/file/27466569/Wk3Assgndoc/ This study resource was shared via CourseHero.com CONCEPT ANALYSIS IN THE LITERATURE: SPIRITUALITY 3 Monareng (2012) finds that the definition of spirituality within nursing care continues to be a vague concept with multiple interpretations ranging from general concepts about a higher power to specific ideas surrounding how spirituality relates to religious ideologies. The lack of a clear and concise definition can hinder patient care related to the spiritual aspects and needs that exist for quality care improvements (Monareng, 2012). Nursing and Health Care Spirituality Defined Compared to Other Disciplines Review of nursing ideals surrounding spirituality differs from other health disciplines such as physicians in how the concept is defined and viewed. Pulchalski (2001) reviewed differences between disciplines and found a physician focus on spirituality was related more towards parts of practice such as understanding mortality, recovery from disease states, and coping with terminal illnesses. Physicians are taught to listen to patient fears and work to create a compassionate practice plan where interdisciplinary team members work together for the needs of the patient (Pulchalski, 2001). From a physician perspective, there is an understanding of spirituality being different for every patient, but looking at how the patient’s viewpoint affects the healing or dying process. Nursing is defined more from the emotional aspect and holistic view of a caring presence and discussion of the search for meaning and purpose in each patient’s life (Monareng, 2012). A concept analysis of spirituality from a nursing practice standpoint relates that there is no single theory or ideology that can accurately describe what spirituality means for every patient (Agrimson & Taft, 2009). Defining Characteristics and Application to Nursing and Clinical Practice Nurses are with patients during times of physical and emotional turmoil, even if it is where a nurse cannot fix everything, being with the patient can show empathy and understanding https://www.coursehero.com/file/27466569/Wk3Assgndoc/ This study resource was shared via CourseHero.com CONCEPT ANALYSIS IN THE LITERATURE: SPIRITUALITY 4 more than other disciplines. Monareng (2012) researched concept analysis characteristics related to spirituality to be actions like a caring presence, need for finding a meaning and purpose to life, transcendence and finding a wider perspective of situations that occur in a lifetime, interconnectedness from healthy relationships with a higher power, individual beliefs, and family connections. The applications of spirituality to nursing practice includes the creation of a trusting relationship between patient and nurse, sensitivity to patient needs, and showing patients empathy, caring, and respect for all care decisions (Monareng, 2012). Without the application of spirituality into nursing practice, patients may feel as if not all the emotional needs are met during care delivery. Sensitivity to each patient’s needs ensures improvement in the perception of the quality of care delivered during each health care visit. Summary It can be concluded that using a concept analysis is an important scholarly exercise that becomes the foundation of a literature review surrounding a concept (Monareng, 2012). Agrimson and Taft (2009) and Monareng (2012) follow similar concept analysis processes that include the selection of a topic, determination of the purpose, topic analysis, identification of concept uses, defining attributes, researching case studies, review of concept experiences, and how to define the information found from the analysis. Oh and Kim (2014) emphasize that spirituality is a widely recognized part of basic health and well-being as spirituality allows the human being to follow ideologies or beliefs that aid in coping with negative events, grief processes, and creating a way to find meaning and purpose for a patient’s life. https://www.coursehero.com/file/27466569/Wk3Assgndoc/ This study resource was shared via CourseHero.com CONCEPT ANALYSIS IN THE LITERATURE: SPIRITUALITY 5 Reference Agrimson, L. Changes in medical education

Write a 3–5-page paper that analyzes the changes that have occurred in medical education from the 1800s to today. Compare and contrast the apprenticeship and academic models of medical education and provide examples.

Introduction

Much has changed in American medicine since the establishment of the first medical school in 1765 at the College of Philadelphia. At that time, physicians had very little professional training, and much of their training was unregulated—as was the treatment they provided to patients. As the medical profession became more established and education became more formal, the rules governing who could practice medicine also became more formal and restricted.

With the formation of the American Medical Association (AMA) in 1876, more medical schools required a four-year degree in order to qualify for medical practice, and the attempt to focus on quality became stronger. However, since many physicians were already from the “old school,” it was difficult to make the necessary changes that might restrict or diminish those educated earlier. Not until outside organizations began to exert pressure to enforce standards in education did improvements in training begin to be seen.

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:

• Competency 3: Analyze the development of medical education in the United States.o Analyze the scope of change in medical education from the 1800s to today.o Compare and contrast the apprenticeship model and the academic model of medical education.o Analyze why it is important to understand the history of medicine in order to improve medical education.• Competency 4: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and respectful of the diversity, dignity, and integrity of others.o Produce writing that conveys understanding of the topic, its context, and its relevance.o Use academic writing conventions such as APA formatting and citation style, or others as required.o Produce writing that includes minimal grammar, usage, and mechanical errors, including spelling.

Sensation – I like listening to my music before going to sleep, but if my parents hear my music after 10 pm, I get in trouble. If my music is below their absolute threshold, then I won’t get in trouble, because they won’t hear it. It is really hard to keep it below their absolute thresholds because it seems that even the faintest amount of sound coming from my room is detectable. In this example, the absolute threshold is the lowest amount of volume that they can detect up to 50% of the time (Grison, Heatherton, & Gazzaniga, 2017).

Nutrition Assignmnet2

Essay assignment (400 words minimum) on one macronutrient from two perspectives: one from a naturally occurring harvest, the other from a refining and manufacturing process.

Description

The learning objectives for this chapter include emphasis on whole foods versus refined and processed foods. Throughout the book, this is a common theme that encompasses many modern issues and decisions in nutritional choices. This assignment requires students to present two views on one macronutrient of choice, in the following scenario:

The patient is a relatively inactive 26-year old woman who lives alone in a highly urban city in an apartment. She works from home as a software engineer for 7-8 hours every day. She exercises 1-2 times a week at the local gym for 30-40 minutes each time. She typically runs on the treadmill, but does not do muscle training or any other form of exercise. The patient is inquiring about the benefits, risks, and costs of buying refined foods from the store versus whole foods from the farmer’s market. The store is 5 minutes’ walk away from the apartment, while the farmer’s market is around 7 miles from the city. The patient is seeking to purchase one food from each category of macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

As such, one view is from the perspective of a naturally occurring harvest, and the other is from a processing and refining perspective.

Students should be able to answer the following three questions for one macronutrient:

  1. Whole Foods Perspective: what four benefits and four risks of this macronutrient in its whole, non-processed form?
  2. Refined Foods Perspective: what are four benefits and four risks of this macronutrient in its processed and refined form?
  3. Dietary Guidelines: according to the 2015 Dietary Guidelines, as well as the scenario, how much of this macronutrient should this patient consume?
  4. Health Options: what other lifestyle options can this patient pursue to maintain a healthy weight and wellbeing?

Students should also provide an organized list of APA-formatted citations and sources.

Student Resources/Recommended Readings

Analyze the Power of Administrative Rulemaking

Instructions

After completing this week’s assigned reading materials, identify what you see as the most daunting contemporary challenge federal agencies face today as they seek to create, modify, and enforce far-reaching administrative regulations nation-wide.

A white paper is a document which provides a reader with background on a particular topic to increase understanding, enable problem-solving, and foster decision-making. In the policy-making process, a white paper is generally written in formal language, with substantive text and ample data to provide an in-depth discussion of an issue. For this exercise, you are a senior public administrator assigned to the Administrative Enforcement Division of Federal Agency ‘X’ in Washington, DC. You have been tasked to prepare a white paper for your agency’s director providing an analysis on your understanding of how federal agency-level administrative action is considered law for federalism purposes, yet not law within the constitutionally-enshrined separation of powers by the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Next, critically analyze what you see as the inherent strengths and weaknesses of differences of administrative rulemaking as compared to traditional statutory rulemaking, which is performed by the country’s elected political representatives on Capitol Hill and within the Oval Office. Specify how public officials can address any potential weaknesses you identify in this white paper.

Support your assignment with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.

Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pages

Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
