Peer Response

“Making Assets Portable”

– Analyze two (2) advantages and two (2) disadvantages of creating portable learning assets for an LMS.

Advantages of portable learning assets include:

  1. Learner actively involved in his or her e-learning
  2. Flexibility and adaptability according to availability time and location
  3. Personal progress monitoring during e-Learning course and appraisal of results obtained thanks to tracking
  4. Self-assessment during and at end of course
  5. Interactivity and attractiveness of e-Learning content an Training at own pace, independently, of other learners

Disadvantages of portable learning assets include:

  1. Command of computer tools, reticence in face of new technologies
  2. Autonomous self-management as no imposed training framework
  3. Management of motivation and involvement in e-Learning, concentration effort
  4. No direct contacts with trainer, except in the case of blended learning

-Use the Internet database to research alternatives to Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM). Determine at least one (1) alternative to SCORM and recommend a way for an organization of your choice to package its assets to make them portable. Explain your rationale.

An alternative to SCORM would be Tin Can. It allows UNESCO options  for a future proof e-Learning content. However, it allows UNESCO to benefit from the potential of a new technology that will be enhanced as it’s embraced by the industry. Tin Can, can also integrate an LMS like LearnUpon with a Learning Record Store (LRS) to fully leverage Tin Can’s reporting power. It offers a number of fancy improvements over the old method, which is a great advance for UNESCO’s organization. The Tic Can Spec allows UNESCO organization to capture more richer data due to its powerful LMS like LearnUpon. This allows UNESCO to automate reports based on the incredibly detailed data that Tin Can tracks.  Tin Cans’ protocal is mobile ready and tracks a lot more movement than the older method. UNESCO organization will be using iPhones which can be tracked and record lots of data.

In Education for all ( EFA) is an international commitment to provide high quality basic education for all children, youth and adults. The goals of UNESCO organization is to provide important international development framework  against which progress at the global, regional and national levels is measured and compared. Most countries have includes these goals in their development policies and monitoring systems. Since 2000 the UNESCO organization and EFA goals have been driven national policies and development in many countries, and have been a basis for mobilizing resources for education. Many countries have legislation that makes the government responsible for designing relevant and good quality learning materials and for providing teachers.

RITUALS

PLEASE RESPOND TO AT LEAST TWO STUDENTS. PLEASE NOTE THAT ONE-TWO SENTENCE POSTS OR RESPONSES WILL NOT SUFFICE.

RAWLEY’S POST:

One of my friends rushed a sorority our freshman year of high school.  Although I was not a part of it, she shared some of the rituals of the bothersome organization how girls were talked about and chosen based on looks or the status of their parents. We attended some of the fraternities, and witnessing some of the hazing going on, I was astonished that these were deemed “rituals”. There was undoubtedly questionable behavior that looked highly unethical in the name of rituals.

RUSSELL’S POST:

I believe that the one ritual I can think of for my organization is the new employee orientation, both a rite if integration and a rite of passage.  When I first began working here there was an extensive and monthly and mandatory orientation.  It gave new employees the information and tools they needed to integrate into the fabric of the organization.  Over time, some of those functions moved to the online orientation and some just dropped away entirely.  If I were given the opportunity I would suggest a new and improved, and in-person (or virtual) new employee orientation to give new people that feeling of inclusion and safety.

LOWEST PRICE

PLEASE RESPOND TO AT LEAST TWO STUDENTS. PLEASE NOTE THAT ONE-TWO SENTENCE POSTS OR RESPONSES WILL NOT SUFFICE.

KELVIN’S POST:

In most situations, companies should provide the lowest price possible and the best service to their consumers. People deserver to be treated with the utmost respect and decency. However, some cases can call for the opposite. I would not necessarily say prices should change (they could though), but service might decline if a customer comes in who is always angry or disgruntled with the employees. People who repeatedly act in rude ways should receive the same sort of service. Now say if someone has a business that requires a water tank with chemicals on the back of a truck to care for customer’s lawns and gardens. If an area is hard to get to or always blocked by other traffic, raising the price might be necessary from the lowest to meet the issue at hand.

GERRIT’S POST:

I do not think that companies owe their customers the lowest price and best service. I do think that is a good business practice to attract more customers to provide good customer service regardless of the price range of the product or service being provided. I think what a business owes its consumers is an honest representation of its goods and services that fits their price points. It is up to the consumer to accept the transaction or find another company to deal with. I always shop around to try to find the best bang for my buck I can. I think that it is a lot easier nowadays with most people having smartphones and access the Internet to find the deals and stuff that’ll fit with your price points best. That being said, any company that mistreats its customers, whether being through deceitful practices or poor customer service, will not last long as other companies are constantly coming up to their place and competing with them for their customer base.

TOXIC LEADERS

Respond/reply to at least one other student (the best response/reply will have at least two (2) paragraphs with at least five (5) sentences per paragraph).

AARON’S POST:

I agree with all of the reasons posed by the textbook as to why followers become henchmen for toxic leaders. However, within what I have seen in the past, I would have to say that the need for security and certainty has been one the most significant reasons. In the context of following toxic leadership, I think that every circumstance is different for everyone. But, if someone knows that they are following a toxic leader but feels as if they cannot leave due to what would happen if they did, this is a prime example of these type of followers taking advantage of our need for security and certainty. I think that this applies all across the board, from the example given in the text about the migrant workers, all the way to a person who feels like he is stuck at his terrible work environment and cannot simply quit due to what it might do to his career.

I think that the two most important principles of leadership as described in the text are serving others as well as being honest. “Leaders who serve are altruistic: They place their followers’ welfare foremost in their plans. In the workplace, altruistic service behavior can be observed in activities such as mentoring, empowerment behaviors, team building, and citizenship behaviors, to name a few (Kanungo & Mendonca, 1996).” (Northouse, pp. 502, 2019). As we discussed within last week’s topic of servant leadership, I think that having a deep desire to serve others before we consider ourselves is one of the most powerful forms of leadership. We must be the ones who show up early, stay late, and do anything and everything that we can to lead our subordinates in the right direction. When it comes to being honest leaders, I really liked this point that the text made: “But being honest is not just about telling the truth. It has to do with being open with others and representing reality as fully and completely as possible.” (Northouse, pp. 504, 2019). What makes a great leader is having the ability to be completely and totally honest, why also respecting the fact that there are times when certain things need to said and done through a different filter in depending on different situations.

The reason why I chose serving others and being honest as the two most important principles of leadership is because within my own personal experience, these have been the two that have been the most prevalent within the best leaders that I have ever followed. Not only have these been significant with the best leaders I’ve followed but have also been what the worst I have followed have lacked significantly. Whenever I am following a leader who chooses to serve others before he/she themselves are served, I have always been inspired to do the same exact thing. This, in turn, has made me both a better follower as well as a leader. Whenever a leader that I follow consistently displays honesty in both the big and small areas, I am encouraged to trust them more and therefore I become a better follower, as well as developing the desire to be honest within both my followership and leadership.

Social Work Assigment

Writing a proposal that functions as a focus of change is a significant part of being a social worker/policy advocate. This is your opportunity to use your advocacy skills to change and improve the lives of others.

In this Assignment, you write a proposal for some form of social advocacy that will seek to change a social, organizational, or legislative policy. The proposal may also involve advocacy for the amelioration of a social problem. The purpose of this assignment is to thoughtfully and thoroughly plan how you will advocate changing a social problem or policy that is of interest to you.

The policy practice/advocacy can take whatever form you wish and can be on any level: agency, community, state, or federal. You will submit a prospectus (3–4 pages) that describes the problem that is being addressed and the expected advocacy activities.

By Day 7

Submit your assignment.

Be specific when describing the social problem or policy you would like to change and address the following:

  • If you selected a policy, when was the policy enacted, by whom, and for what reason?
  • How are you going to work to change the policy/problem (i.e., plan for social advocacy)?
  • How will your efforts address the policy/social problem described?
  • Is continued policy practice/advocacy needed to make a long-term impact? Why or why not?

The prospectus will need to be well researched and written using APA guidelines. Data should come from at least five sources.

Environmental Scan

Example is attached below

Access at least two listservs and at least two active blogs to follow topics and trends. These can be those listed in your weekly Learning Resources or those chosen on your own. Make weekly notes in your blog to capture topics and developments in the field. Your blog should include periodic reflection on the content.

Reminder: As you make posts in your log, be sure to support your postings with specific references to the resources you use. Use APA formatting to cite your sources.

Sources for your Environmental Scan: The Learning Resources list several listservs to which you can subscribe. You will need to conduct an Internet search for assessment and evaluation blogs. Do not assume that all blogs are equal; some are marketing tools by consultants that may not advance your knowledge. If you use websites as resources, be certain they are updated frequently and are not simply static repositories of information.

What to log: The purpose of a scan is to read and reflect on many sources of information. Realistically, however, you will not be able to reflect on all topics. Create your own heuristic technique for a simple tally of all topics that emerge; and in addition to that, select several topics to actually report on. Your report may take the form of synthesis of comments on these topics, or the report may compare the treatment of those topics on the different listservs and blogs.

Topics can range from statistical tests to requests for proposals to rationales for external evaluators. Use the range of topics to educate yourself on evaluation vocabulary as well as professional-level discourse.

CONCERT ACROSS TIME

Choose an excerpt from two concerts, one of a pop or rock concert of your choice and one of a performance of music from the Classical Era (1750-1800 AD) chosen from the list below. Watch approximately 10 minutes of each concert. (Please note: The rock or pop concert you choose should be one you watch during this course, rather than a performance you watched or attended prior to the class.)

After viewing the concert excerpts, construct a comparison of these two concerts and address the following:

1. Explain why you did or did not enjoy the concerts.

2. Evaluate similarities and differences between music in the Classical era and rock/pop music. Be sure to reference specific musical attributes of the concerts, and use musical terminology and information from the course materials to express your ideas.

3. Discuss the types of people who attended concerts in the Classical era and those who attend rock or pop concerts today, and why people attended concerts in the Classical era versus today. (Be certain to use specific information from scholarly sources to support your points about concerts during the Classical era.)

4. Analyze how new technologies, such as digital media and the internet, change the ways music is experienced.

This paper should be 750-1000 words in length. This assignment should reflect knowledge and understanding of the course materials. Points should be supported by specific information from scholarly sources and musical terminology should be used to express ideas. This paper should be written in paragraph form using complete sentences with a clear introduction and conclusion. Be sure to reference both concerts in the introduction and conclusion.

In addition to these elements, please be sure to fulfill the Requirements for Writing Assignments (see below), including citing all sources (including the concerts) both in the body of the text and in a reference page. Please note that MLA is the standard citation style in the humanities. Here are some good sources of information for Evaluating Online ResourcesCiting Sources, and Writing & Grammar Resources. Discussion #4: American Imperial Expansion

Discussion #4: American Imperial Expansion

The Republican victory in 1896 gave heart to proponents of prosperity through foreign trade.   McKinley sought neither war nor colonies, but many in his party wanted both. Called “jingos,” they included Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt; John Hay, the ambassador to London, and senators Albert Beveridge and Henry Cabot Lodge.  Britain, France, and Germany were seizing territory around the world, and jingos believed the United States needed to do the same for strategic, religious, and economic reasons.

In order to prepare for this discussion forum::

  • Review and identify the relevant sections of Chapter 21 that support your discussion.
  • Read the linked document, taken from an article by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (R-MASS), in the 1895 issue of Forum magazine. What motives for imperialism are reflected in Lodge’s article?

After you have completed your readings post your response to only ONE of the following questions.

  1. Several reasons are proposed explaining why the United States decided to join the “Imperialist Club”.  Which argument was the strongest, and which argument was the weakest?  Explain your position.
  2. Is there any evidence to support Kristin Hoganosn’s argument regarding the role of gender and the Spanish-American War? (Suggestion:  students might want to review the previous chapter for a discussion on this topic).  Discuss if you agree or disagree with her argument.  Make sure to support your position.
  3. In your opinion, do Lodge’s arguments support the need for the United States to acquire an imperial empire?  Explain your position.
