What do you consider to be the core causes of the Civil War (both short term—within 10 years of the start of the war and long term—anything more than 10 years before the start of the war)? At what point do you believe the war became inevitable? Choose one of the three positions covered in your textbook, The Causes of the Civil War, by Joel Sipress, and explain why you believe it best explains why the Civil War began. Be sure to provide specific examples and explanations.

General Information

1.  Your Essay should be between 600-950 words. Try to stick to that word count. If you’re a little over or under that is fine

2. You don’t need footnotes for this assignment, you should include informal references within your essay (Sipress, 17, or “Mini-Lecture #3 “Politics in the 1850s,” for example). If you use a source that is not from this class you need to include a complete footnote.

3. This essay will use SafeAssign

4. The positions on the cause of the Civil War can be found in Sipress.

Position #1 “Two Cultures, Separate and Hostile,” (17-20)

Position #2 “Slavery and its role in the American Civil War,” (21-25)

Position #3 “Party Breakdown and the Coming of the Civil War (26-29)

psychology research paper

The research paper you choose a topic from the textbook or elsewhere that is psychologically related (check with me if it is not part of the textbook’s table of content) and write the paper from a research viewpoint instead from a self-reflective lens.  The research paper provides an opportunity to demonstrate the understanding of the key concepts and issues covered in the course through readings and assignments. Avoid writing in the first person since it is a research paper. Responses can integrate content from the textbook and weekly assignments. Responses are supported by a rationale often strengthened by the use of examples. The essay can be divided on the following areas:

1- An introduction to the topic (background information, history, current context)
2- Using a psychological perspective or topic, identify, discuss/analyze the relationship between the theory you present and your (or somebody you know or public figure) life events.  Begin with a description of the notion, followed by a discussion regarding the way that it affects the psychological process. Provide examples of how the relationship between the concepts you use have been reflected in your personal and professional life and integrate the language used by psychologists to study and understand our psychological world.

Summary:

1- Introduction (i.e., topic, thesis, background information, history, current context)
2- Describe the assumptions (i.e., beliefs and expectations) of society about the topic
3- Describe the strengths and limitations of your topic
4- Construct an argument regarding the topic, why this topic is important (for instance, prevalence of issue, statistics, who/what does it impact, etc.)
5- Provide a critique or analysis on the topic
6- Conclusion

All papers should demonstrate accurate citation of references (both text and Internet) in the style of the American Psychological Association (latest APA format edition). For additional information on correct APA format see Psychological Online Documents and/or the Library Reference Desk.

Organizational Culture

Organizational Culture The organizational culture is one of the most important features of a public organization. Values, norms, and rules infuse organizations with cultural traits and promote stability and persistence over time. These elements can strongly influence how employees feel about the jobs they do and the quality of the work they perform. Involving employees in developing and maintaining an organization’s core values will demonstrate how important employees are to those core values. Therefore, employee engagement becomes an integral part of managing organizational culture and change. In a groundbreaking study, Porumbescu, Park, and Oomsels (2013) explore how communication from supervisors influences subordinates’ trust in the supervisor and organization. They posit that interpersonal communication builds trust in public organizations.  Building trust through effective communication also helps manage change in the public sector. Change can be incremental or discontinuous. Incremental change results from fine-tuning operations while discontinuous change results from a significant reconstruction of the organization’s work. Naturally, discontinuous change is more difficult and can disrupt the organization. Change can lead to feelings of stress and insecurity. And most likely, stakeholders can’t proceed until the discomfort is addressed. Therefore, leaders must include as many stakeholders in the change process as possible to make all more comfortable with the process.  Be sure to review this week’s resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare your assignments.  References:  Porumbescu, G., Park, J. & Oomsels, P. (2013). ERD diagram and MS ACCESS file

Part A: Develop an entity-relationship diagram (ERD) and its corresponding database (Microsoft Access) to be used by a product manufacturer to manage the orders it receives from its customers. Part A will be submitted as an MS WORD document. Make sure the ERD diagram shows the relation between entities clearly. Use the attached document to develop ERD for your database.

  • Each customer is identified uniquely by a customer id; include the first name, last name, and address for each customer.
  • The company has several products that it stocks and for which customers place orders.
  • Each product has a unique id, unique name, unit price, and quantity on hand. At any time, a customer may place an order which will involve possibly many products.
  • For each product ordered the database must know the quantity ordered and the unit price at that point in time. If the customer does this through a phone call then an employee is involved in the call and will be responsible for the order from the company side.
  • Some orders are placed via the Internet. For each order, an order number is generated. For each order, the database must keep track of the order number, the date the order was placed, and the date by which the customer needs to receive the goods.

Part B: Consider the Orders database. This database has several one-to-many relationships. Part B will be submitted as an MS ACCESS file. Make sure one-to-many relationship runs between entities according to the ERD diagram in Part A Create appropriate forms to list:

  • A customer and the customer’s orders
  • Order and its detail lines
  • A product and the order detail lines where the product is referenced
  • A category and the products belonging to the category.

The case study I chose this week was the young patient, Katie, who presents with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), predominantly inattentive presentation. Her teacher describes her symptoms as inattentive, easily distracted, forgets things she already learned, and is poor in spelling, reading, and arithmetic. ADHD is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed in childhood and is characterized by chronic symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity leading to functional impairment in multiple settings (Danielson, Bitsko, Ghandour, Holbrook, Kogan & Blumberg, 2018).

The first decision I made in Katie’s plan of care was prescribing Ritalin chewable tablets 10mg orally in the morning. Katie and her parents returned to the clinic four weeks later stating that the medication did improve her symptoms in the morning and overall academic performance, but by the afternoon Katie became easily distracted again. She also was tachycardic from the medication. My next decision was to discontinue the Ritalin and prescribe Adderall XR 15mg orally daily. The extended release helped maintain her attention throughout the day, but Katie still was tachycardic. At this point, my next decision was simply to reduce the dose to 10mg. Unfortunately, tachycardia is a main side effect from Adderall, but Katie’s could have been worse because she was started at a higher dose. It is important to initially start at 10mg and increase to 5-10mg once the patient is tolerating the medication well.

The administration of the associated pharmacotherapeutics I recommended may impact the patient’s pathophysiology in different ways. For example, the drugs Ritalin and Adderall are both stimulants causing a possible increased heart rate, which is the main side effect this patient presented with. This is why it is important to start the patient on a low dose and gradually increase the dose as needed. In addition, these drugs may also impact the patient’s sleep and cause eating problems, which has commonly been reported but can be managed by making adjustments to the medication regimen or daily routines (Hennissen, Bakker, Banaschewski, Carucci, Coghill, Danckaerts, Buitelaar, 2017). However, these types of drugs are highly effective in the treatment of ADHD by improving attention and focus causing the impulsiveness and hyperactivity to decline because the child is now able to concentrate on the specific task (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021).

Based upon the assigned readings and presentations, you will answer all questions using current APA formatting (Times New Roman, 12- point font, and double spaced). All answers must be compiled in a Word document. Citations from the assigned reading are required in answering the questions. The written assignments must include at least one reference(s) in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. Each answer must be comprehensive, with sport related current examples. Each question must be answered with 400–500 words. Select 4 of the following questions to answer. Critical thinking must be demonstrated in each answered question.

  1. Should sport impose a minimum eligibility requirement based on age (e.g., in women’s tennis, 14 yr. old’s can compete against 30 yr. old’s.)?
  2. What strategies would you suggest keeping kids involved in sport or otherwise physically active throughout their teenage years and early adulthood?
  3. What four or five changes would you make to youth sport programs as they exist today. Explain reasons for each change as an interactionist theorist would be likely to do?
  4. List 4 current coaching scandals and explain how each of these scandals hurt the young people involved, the university and cast a doubt on the integrity of coaches?
  5. Taking the position of a feminist theorist, research possible reasons for the low percentage of female coaches and suggest strategies for improving the situation. In other words, what is the cause and what are some possible solutions?
  6. List the standards, certifications and continuing education for prospective coaches?

Signature assignment

you will examine a particular case within a special population, and then develop a broad understanding of the role of the forensic psychologist in a correctional setting.

First, you must choose a unique case study or special population as a whole. Some examples are listed below:

  • Selecting a case from the headlines such as a recent high profile criminal case that has a clear intersection with mental health.
  • Making up a case example based on your interests, prior case examples you have read, or a mixture of all of the above.
  • Selecting a population as a whole that we may or may not have touched on in class including, but not limited to:
    • sex offenders
    • violent offenders
    • military offenders
    • women offenders
    • juvenile offenders
    • offenders with substance use issues
    • offenders with life sentences
    • high profile offenders
    • prior law enforcement who are incarcerated

After you have selected a case study, describe the particular characteristics of the individual’s population and what particular issues they may deal with in a correctional setting. Be sure to address the following:

  • Relationships with other offenders and staff
  • Possible issues with authority
  • Treatment-related concerns
  • Relevant research on this population and its interaction with the correctional system

Next, you will discuss different aspects of correctional settings and how you could influence this individual or population as a forensic psychologist. Be sure to include the following:

  • Treatment options available for your particular individual or group’s needs.
    • Include treatment options while in jail, prison, or community corrections.
    • Discuss the availability and flow of treatment as the individual or population moves from the correctional environment to the community.
    • Be sure to discuss the efficacy of treatment options available.
  • Other ways you may affect this individual as a mental health practitioner, administrator, or forensic psychology researcher.
    • This may include ideas for new initiatives, research, or systematic change
    • In discussing this you should identify areas where change is needed, what the issues are, and potential steps for the future

Additionally, discuss your overall impression of the mental health services available in different correctional settings, and then evaluate the degree to which your population’s needs are met.

Finally, be sure to include how the treatment program relates to overall rehabilitation and recidivism in the community once released.

Forensic identification

Crime scene management and investigation refers to the activity that goes on at an actual crime scene rather than in a forensics laboratory. However, the physical and trace evidence gathered in the field at a crime scene will eventually be analyzed in a forensics laboratory and the analyses conducted govern the types of evidence collected at a scene. Many individuals tend to accept as absolute truth that forensic laboratory testing and results are scientific in nature. However, much criticism has been leveled in recent years that many of the techniques used have never been validated and no known error rates have been established. Without this information, we cannot be sure how often forensic examiners make errors in judgment or to what extent these errors are influenced by what the examiner already knows about the case. This has broad implications in criminal investigation.

For this week’s assignment, you will step out of the crime scene and into the forensics laboratory for a look at some known issues and criticisms in forensic laboratory testing as well as in credentialing someone to be classified as an “expert” forensic examiner. It is beneficial to understand what happens with the evidence collected at the crime scene once it goes to the laboratory. Your research for this paper may cause you to question the reliability and validity of commonly relied upon forensic evidence in criminal trials. However, your job as a scholar (and criminal investigator) is to evaluate objectively what you are learning and arrive at a conclusion that is based on information from credible sources.

First, watch the Frontline documentary The Real CSIand then discuss the following in your paper using the National Academy of Sciences 2009 report (Chapters 2, 4, and 5) as a credible resource to support your assertions:

  • Summarize the Brandon Mayfield case, focusing on the idea that no two fingerprints are alike despite the fact that this has never been tested. Identify what type of testing would need to be done to ensure that the assertion that “no two fingerprints are alike” is true? Examine whether or not this type of testing is feasible and why or why not.
  • Analyze what role cognitive bias might play in influencing the forensic lab results of tests in areas such as fingerprint identification, firearms identification, bite mark identification, or the “smell of death” technique described in the Frontline film.
  • There is much criticism that techniques used in fingerprint identification and other types of forensic identification described in the NAS report (Chapter 5) are inherently unscientific because there have been no validation studies. Without validation studies that establish known error rates, these methods cannot be said to be scientifically sound. Recommend whether or not to use commonly accepted scientific techniques that have not been scientifically validated and supports these recommendations with research materials.
  • Suggest at least one intervention to overcome the effects of cognitive bias that may influence a forensic examiner’s identification decision.
  • Analyze the type of training and credentials forensic examiners should have in order to work in a forensics lab. Provide recommendations for training and credentialing forensic examiners to ensure that they are adequately trained.
