The operating systems were designed to run on desktop and  laptop computers. Mobile devices such as phones, tablet computers, and  MP3 players are different from desktop and laptop computers, so they run  operating systems that are designed specifically for mobile devices. An  operating system is the most important software that runs on a  computer. It manages the computer’s memory and processes, as well as all  of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with  the computer without knowing how to speak the computer’s language.  Without an operating system, a computer  is useless. The operating system (OS) allows users to perform the basic  functions of a computer. The OS manages all software and peripheral  hardware and accesses the central processing unit (CPU) for memory or  storage purposes. It also makes it possible for a system to  simultaneously run applications. All PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones,  and servers require an OS. Developers may use specific operating  systems that are more conducive to programming and application  development, while the average employee will likely use a proprietary  system for more common, everyday usage. The most common operating  systems are Microsoft’s Windows, Apple’s OS X, Linux distributions, and  mobile operating systems for smartphones. A PC can be a Linux, Windows,  Mac, Chrome variant, or other OS installed on it. A PC is a personal  computer. A smartphone can also have different OSs on them and with  different levels of security, the same goes for tablets. These are all  hardware devices that you are asking a question about, the security will  be mostly software related with some extra hardware sometimes. That is  like asking a question what tires will last better, a hand wagon, a car,  or a semi-truck. All can be secure and all can also be a leaking  component for your information and privacy leaving you vulnerable to  attack.

Assignment 1:

Before completing this activity, be sure you’ve read at least the first 75 pages of BTWAM. You can then proceed to this synthesis activity that asks to to scan beyond those pages for what Coates has to say about the Dream and Dreamers. Being able to summarize his definition will be an important part of writing your introduction for this essay, as it is a way to inform your readers about what Coates believes.  

Please read all of the following excerpts of quotes (look up the whole quote if needed) –and synthesize whatever seems most important to you. Come up with a one to two sentence summary of Coates’ view of the Dream and/or Dreamers. Then, include a question–maybe a struggle you faced writing the summary and ask each other for advice. Post a response on one of your classmate’s posts /questions/concerns. Please make at least  three posts, each post at least 100 words starting with your summary w/ a question and then two responses of substance to classmates.

Student 1:

Coates believes Dreamers are people who want and believe the American Dream exist because America is the land of the free & you can achieve “the dream” if you work hard enough but don’t realize that America was built through the exploitation of black people. 

Question 

Coates was almost shot when he was younger. Thankfully the kid with the gun never pulled the trigger but Coates felt how easily it was for his life to be selected by the streets. Has anyone had a close encounter with death? If so, what happened and did the encounter change you in any way?

Student 2: 

Coates’ believed the Dream and Dreamers were given and biased. That the blacks were all condemned to this life, this “dream” they were forced to live in and that the whites took it upon themselves to take over and control their freedom. He believed the Dream spoken of, was an outcome of his prior generations diligent hard work and perseverance. If they were not stolen, beaten, enslaved and put into this degrading position that this whole Dream would cease to exist.

Question:

How would you interpret his metaphor “The Dream is tree houses and the Cub Scouts. The Dream smells like peppermint but tastes like strawberry shortcake”?

2) Develop an application using an array of structures that will determine the gross pay for any number of employees input. The company pays “straight-time” for the first 40 hours worked, double time for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours but less than 50 hours, and triple time for any hours worked over 50 hours. The program should be able to loop and input the employee’s name, hours worked, and the rate of pay.  Once this has been done then outputthis information including the gross pay in the form of a paycheck.The process starts all over again until you input an invalid rate of pay or hours worked.  Thismeans a negative rate of pay or negative number of hours worked isnot acceptable. Discussion: Remaining Compassionate and Professional

As a social worker, you interact with individuals who are at various stages of change in their lives. This may become frustrating for you when clients are struggling to achieve their goals. Thus, it is important for you to develop strategies to process your experiences so that you can maintain your compassion and professionalism. As you consider the strategies you have developed to address these issues, also consider how you might help other social workers to develop such strategies. Perhaps you consulted with your supervisors when you had difficulty processing your emotions in particular situations. As you consider assuming a supervisory role, how might you apply your learning from those experiences to helping those whom you supervise?

For this Discussion, review the Levy case study in this week’s video. Consider how you, as a social worker, might address the challenge of remaining engaged with a client while not letting your emotions affect the interaction. Also, consider how you, as a supervisor, might discuss this topic with a social worker whom you supervise.

Part A: 

By the end of this year you would be 35 years old and you want to plan for your retirement. You wish to retire at the age of 65 and you expect to live 20 years after retirement. Upon retirement you wish to have an annual sum of $50,000 to supplement your social security benefits. Therefore, you opened now your retirement account with 7% annual interest rate. At retirement you liquidate your account and use the funds to buy an investment grade bond which makes $50,000 annual coupon payments based on a 6 % coupon rate, throughout your retirement years. 

  1. How much will the face value of the bond that you will be investing?
  2. Please calculate the monthly payment in your retirement account in order to be able to achieve the plan mentioned above? 
  3. How much will your inheritors receive? 

Now let’s extend the problem so that you protect yourself against inflation.

Part B: 

Suppose you think if you were to retire right now you would have needed $50,000 each year to supplement your social security and maintain your desired lifestyle. But because there is on average 3% annual inflation, when you retire in 30 years from now you need more than $50,000 per year to maintain the lifestyle you like. 

  1. How much will be equivalent to $50,000 at the retirement time when adjusted for inflation?
  2. How much will be the face value of the bond that yields the equivalent of $50,000, found in #4 of Part B in coupon payment?
  3. How much annual payment in the retirement account is needed to accumulate the amount needed to purchase the bond when retiring?
