research discussion

WE

Class,

Let’s continue figuring out your research question.  This is going to be the most important part of the course, but also the most difficult!

Please read this week’s chapter to help you understand research in criminal, so that you can get an idea of what is expected.

Also, keep the following in mind:

– do not be too general with your research questions.  You must be very explicit and specific with your research question.  If your interest is “political corruption in law enforcement” that is too broad.  You must be specific about which branch.  And, you must be very specific about what your definition of “corruption” is.  This is called operationalism.

– Many of you are not asking research questions.  Instead, you are simply asking for general information about a criminal justice topic.  Asking, ‘how many people get arrested” is not a research question.  Your research question must be about something that necessitates a study.

Remember: your question has to be specific because only then can you actually study it.  There are many reasons why things happen.  But there are a few narrow reasons very particular things happen.

For instance: suppose your dog dies and you want to know why.  You can’t ask, “Why do dogs die” and expect a specific answer to why your dog dies.  Because there are many reasons why dogs die.  They get old, they get sick, and they get injured and then die.  So your question can’t be, “why do dogs die?”  A more appropriate would be, “why did my dog die.”

Or perhaps you know why your dog died, but you want to know if your dog’s death could have been avoided.  So your question can’t be, “why did my dog die.”  Because you know why.  But, if you want to know more about these types of deaths by dogs you can ask, “How do dogs contract [symptom] that leads to their death?”  Or, if your dog died from a rare occurrence you can ask, “How many dogs die of [rare occurrence]?”

Is this making sense?

You must be very specific and very, very detailed with your question.

Don’t get discouraged!   This class is all about understanding research and how to conduct it.  We will get through it together!

Please discuss freely with the guest speaker.

Please state:

1) What your research interest is; and

2) What research question is most appropriate for this interest?

Now is the time to make a decision about relocating the manufacturing operation to the United States is fast-approaching. AutoEdge, like most companies, uses a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threat (SWOT) analysis to facilitate its decision making.

You have just completed your first monthly activity report for the board when Lester calls.

“Hi,” you say. “I just finished my monthly report for the board. I’ll e-mail it to you when we get done talking.”

“Sounds good,” he says. “I’m calling because we need your expertise again for another facet of our investigation into the manufacturing operation. This time, I want you to conduct a detailed SWOT analysis for AutoEdge, and provide a brief summary of your analysis.”

“I was expecting this,” you say. “Some of the research I’ve done over the past 4 weeks will be useful as I put this analysis together for you.”

“Yes, I thought you were in a good position to do this work,” he says. “Your analysis may be different from other people who have been at the company longer, but your fresh perspective on the components will be helpful in moving the debate forward.”

“That’s a good point,” you say. “I’ll keep that in mind as I go through the information.”

The materials found in the M.U.S.E. may help you with this assignment. Additional information is also provided in the Lessons from Experience series found at the following link:

Discussion #1

Every year many nurses graduate and commence working in a clinical setting. As they start working, they start developing, growing and gaining knowledge. Patricia Benner discussed how even 30 years ago, long-term and ongoing career development was important in nursing due to the complexity and responsibility of nursing practice (Benner, 1982). She developed a model called ” From Novice To Expert” which discussed how nurses gain understanding and acquire skills through patient care over time (Benner,(1982).

I personally see myself as an advanced beginner when it comes to Dr.Benner’s continuum. I have only just recently started working as a nurse, and therefore I recognize that I still have a lot to learn (Benner, (1982) . That is why I believe I am at the point where I am an advanced beginner, which is described in the model as demonstrates acceptable performance, someone who has gained prior experience in actual situations to recognize recurring meaningful components, principles, based on experiences, begins to be formulated to guide actions (Benner, (1982).

A scenario from my practice would be when I started recently working and had to give an antihypertensive drug via a medication pump, and I had just done it one time before( Benner,(1982). I was able to perform the task correctly because I had given this medication before but I still asked about certain steps before given the medication( Benner (1982). I was no expert at this but I was able to perform this task accurately, and many more, that like this one, with practice I will be bale to perfect.

Discussion #2

Hypothyroidism, also known as underactive thyroid is a condition that is associated with the inability of the thyroid gland to enough thyroid hormones. The condition affects women more frequently than men. The signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism vary from person to person. The severity of the condition also affects which signs and symptoms appear and when. In some instances, the symptoms are difficult to identify (Holland, 2017).

When assessing for hypothyroidism, a nurse should inquire about dry skin, voice changes, hair loss, constipation, fatigue, muscle cramps, cold intolerance, sleep disturbances, menstrual cycle abnormalities, weight gain, and galactorrhea. Weight gain in hypothyroidism results from decreased metabolism. Often, signs in hypothyroidism are subtle, and their detection requires a careful physical examination (Orlander, 2021).

Areas that ae significant for physical examination include an enlarged thyroid gland, pallor and jaundice, eyebrow loss, excessive sweating, macroglossia, bradycardia, slowness of speech and dull facial expressions (Patil et al., 2021). Hands should be inspected for thyroid acropachy, onycholysis (painless detachment of the nail from the nail bed), and reddening of the palms. Peripheral tremor may also indicate overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Eyes, tongue and lymph nodes should also be inspected.

Module 8 Discussion- Spectrums of Gender

Activity Instructions:

“It will likely take the rest of my life to return to a gender that is free of shame. I will spend the rest of my life trying to resurrect who I was when I was four. But perhaps this is what we all do? Or at least, this is what we all should do.”
~Jacob Tobia, Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story

Part One

Consider the discussions and arguments presented this week regarding public perceptions and the rights of transgender, nonbinary/agender, and intersex communities. Using the ideas here combined with what you have learned this semester, choose one of the topics below (or your own related point) to create an informed argument on the topic. To do this:

  • State the position you are taking and why you believe this is an important topic
  • Discuss at least 3 sociological concepts that support your position or contribute to what you think is crucial about this issue (you can also reference anything from earlier in the semester).
  • While opinions are welcome and encouraged, be sure you focus on supporting your argument with sociological facts rather than solely personal opinion.

Topics to choose from:

  • Allowing trans/agender people to use the restroom of their choice
  • Allowing trans/agender people to express their identity from a young age
  • Halting sex assignment surgery on intersex infants
  • Gender conscious pronoun use across society and in social interactions
  • The ability to change and choose one’s name (schools, banks, government IDs etc)
  • Your own related topic, please feel free to message me if you have questions about a topic choice

Classmates response (2nd part) will be posted on Thursday

Part Two

For your reply, respond to at least one classmate who discussed a different topic than you and discuss your thoughts on their academic argument. Try to move away from discussing differences in opinion and instead focus on the sociological concepts discussed. You can add any ideas you think might be relevant as well. If you agree with their arguments, be sure to do more than say you agree. Try to add additional ideas or support and build on the discussion. For instance, you might provide considerations of intersectional approaches to the topic.

CLASSMATES RESPONES:

“The topic I choose to speak about is  Allowing trans/ agender people to express their identity from a young age?

I feel that this topic is really important because I feel that any person either trans / agender are able to express how they really feel and have to be able to let all there emotions out and feel confident on any choice that they choose to make. It doesn’t matter what gender you are has long has we are able to express what we feel on the inside even though are generation defines genders of what you are. I feel we all are able to express are selfs has long as we can be our selfs with no shame and be able to embraced the gender we are with respect and love.

It takes so much bravery to accept the fact  that we are all different even if we are trans/ agender we all deserver the same treatment. I feel that if you know what gender you are from a really young is something new you learn about your self and that’s your personally choice. I feel that parents shouldn’t really get in that topic unless the child, teen, adult allow it with all respect. At the end of the day the person making the choice will know what’s best for them and do what’s right for them.

I honestly encourage any child ,teen, adult to be really express-full of how they honestly feel and to not keep anything to them selfs I know it might be hard but there’s always going to be some time of support to help us and understand us with any doubts we have or questions. And with all honest opinion I feel that any person knowing the gender they are have to be able to feel free with no one judging them or telling them anything. At the end of the day we all need to be supportive and respect any decisions made by child, teen, adult.

My final initial post is we live and learn off of any choice we make and we need to learn to never regret any choice we make even if its not knowing the gender you are or if knowing the gender we are we need to be treated equally.”

Writing Assignment #5: Game Theory in the movie “A Beautiful Mind”

Writing Assignment #5: Game Theory in the movie “A Beautiful Mind”

Instructions:

You are to watch a video clip, which is a part of the movie “A Beautiful Mind”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CemLiSI5ox8 (链接到外部网站。)链接到外部网站。

This is one movie you must see. A Beautiful Mind loosely chronicles the life of John Nash, a mathematician at Princeton who changed the way economists view the world. In the movie, Nash’s eureka moment occurs while he is with his friends in a bar. Five girls enter the establishment, and Nash and his friends start contemplating who will get the blonde. Eventually, the conversation turns to Adam Smith and one of his famous quotes, “In competition, individual ambition serves the common good.”

“Every man for himself, gentlemen,” says one of Nash’s friends. And another adds, “And those who strike out are stuck with their friends.”

Eventually, the blonde looks over at Nash, and he joins the conversation saying, “Adam Smith needs revision.” Nash goes on to state that no one should pursue the blonde because they will all end up interfering with one another and no one will get her. What’s worse, none of her friends will want them either because no one likes to be the second choice. However, if they all stay away from the blonde, no one interferes, no one gets insulted, and that is the only way to “win.”

Nash’s friends accuse him of making an attempt to get the girl all to himself, but Nash continues to make his point. He asserts that what Adam Smith said was incomplete. Instead of everyone in a group doing what is best for himself, everyone should do what is best for himself and the group. At this point, Nash rushes out of the bar and spends the next few months writing his treatise on general equilibrium theory.

Once you finish watching the video, you are to answer the following question and submit your answer, and reasons by uploading your document on Canvas.

Question: The video clip seems to claim that what John Nash described to his friends was the Nash equilibrium that no one should pursue the blonde. Please discuss why this cannot be the Nash Equilibrium according to what we learned from this module.
