Sociology Discussion Board

Read the article in Chapter 15 (page 398) in your textbook and the New Yorker article (posted in module 4 in the Discussion Board section) assessing Arlie Hochschild’s book Strangers IN Their Own Land. Based on the presentations of her research, discuss how you could understand the sweeping political changes that have taken place and are currently taking place since the election of President Trump. Do we need to climb or break down empathy walls? How might you use sociological knowledge and research to start this process?

· You are required to first post a response to the discussion board prompt and it must be a minimum of 250 words. Citations, titles, copying questions, references, and other identifying information does not count toward word count.

· You are required to use proper grammar and spelling. When using other sources, citations using APA style are required.

· Direct quotes are not permitted in discussion posting, therefore you must paraphrase and cite. In addition, you must post a discussion response to a student’s discussion posting.

· When responding to a classmate to a classmate, your response needs to be pertinent and of substance. Stating that you agree or disagree is not sufficient. You must substantiate your responses.

· Above all, they must be respectful and worthy of intellectual honesty, sincerity, and humility. Responses must be a minimum of 250 words as well.

Accounting information system

Scenario:

You just started a new job as Business Analyst at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), reporting under Advance Claims Manager Wendy White. She called you in to discuss a concern with an IT project currently in development. When the Flood Claims Accelerated Assistance Project is completed next month, it will allow policyholders to establish an online account to access information about the status of their insurance claims. Eventually they will be able to file their claims online, with any applicable claim payouts automatically deposited directly into the taxpayers’ bank accounts. This project will save the agency around $5M in processing costs annually. Additionally, the recent hurricane has added urgency to this project.   By automating the processing of claims, advance payments can be issued rapidly to help homeowners begin the process of cleaning up their homes.

As designed, the policyholder would set up an online account by entering name, social security number, and street address. For added security, the system will also require the policyholder to enter the year they purchased their property, allowing the system to crosscheck the entered value against county real estate information. (Each county maintains a database of real estate information. This is public information, and includes all sales transactions.)

However, Wendy is concerned that the new solution may introduce some data security risks. She has asked you to do a little research and write a memo summarizing your findings, for her use when she meets with the CIO next week. There is a lot of pressure to get this project completed, so she asks that you be specific about any risks you identify.

This situation brings to mind a security breach that occurred at the IRS recently.

Your Assignment:

  1. Research the “Get Transcript” data breach that occurred at the IRS. Here’s a clue – look at the following article:

https://qz.com/445233/inside-the-irss-massive-data-breach/ Links to an external site.

If you’d like to see another article about this case, read this one:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/irs-says-cyberattacks-more-extensive-than-previously-reported-1439834639 Links to an external site.

(If you have trouble accessing this, go to news.google.com and search for “IRS Says Cyberattacks More Extensive” – Aug 17, 2015).

  1. Prepare a memo that summarizes the IRS “Get Transcript” security breach. You should explain how it happened, what impact it had (and on whom). Highlight any similarities between the IRS case and the new solution at the FEMA.
  2. You may want to document the mechanics of this fraud using some sort of process documentation technique.  (Focus on effective communication.)

Tips: Make sure your memo is well organized and easy to understand at a high level.  You should demonstrate that you fully understand the data breach — not just how the hackers got in, but also how they carried away the money. Your supervisor will only read your best work.

Some important tips and details:

  1. This is an individual assignment.
  2. The final result of your work must be submitted in Word format and should be no longer than 1 ½ pages, single spaced.
  3. Follow course style/format guidelines for memos.

Present and Future Value of Cash Flow [WLO: 1] [CLO: 1]

The projected amount and timing of cash flows received from an investment impacts the value of that investment. The longer it takes to receive a payment, the less valuable it is to the investor today. The key to comparing different investments is to determine the value of each investment in today’s terms. Every investment can be valued in today’s terms using time value of money mathematics. For this discussion forum, you will practice calculating the value of cash flows using the principles of time value of money mathematics.

Time value of money concepts and math form the cornerstone of finance. This discussion is an opportunity for you to practice using these formulas and to progress in your understanding of this important topic. You will use these concepts later in this course, in other finance courses, and throughout a career in finance. Like many concepts, each time you work with time value of money problems you may develop a slightly different, deeper, and more thorough understanding of the theory. Some of you may be quite comfortable using these formulas, while others may need to spend extra time focusing on the mathematics. However, all of you can progress in your abilities through this discussion activity.

Prepare:

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum,

Calculate:

  • Calculate a time value of money problem, according to first letter of your last name, and the equation provided for each problem. The equations listed are in the textbook throughout Chapter 4 using the notations 4.XX for each formula, and in the Chapter 4 Summary.

Bioethics

This section should include at least 1 outside reference and your textbook and should be at least 750 words. Locate an article that discusses a bioethics issue. First, provide a summary of the article and the bioethics issue being presented. Next, discuss what ethical actions the nurse should take in relation to the issue being presented. Also, discuss possible legal issues that the nurse should be aware of.

Part 2 – Your response to this case study should be at least 1000 words and include 2 outside references and your textbook. Analyze the following case study and then answer the following questions:

You are working on the Operating Room and the trauma alert goes off. You respond to the ER to provide support. Once in the ER, you receive report that an 89 year old male is coming in with a self-inflicted GSW (Gun Shot Wound) to the head. You listen to the radio traffic between the ER and ambulance to get an idea what kind of surgery you need to set up for and what will be needed as far as lines and fluid. Here is the report:

HR: 121

B/P: 60/45

Saturation: 93%

Patient is intubated and non-responsive. Right pupil is fixed and dilated. Paramedic also states there is a large extended family headed to the ER. The patient lost his wife of 60 years 1 week ago and left a note stating that he is too heartbroken to go on. The patient and family arrive. The neurosurgeon discusses that their father’s potential outcome, even with surgery, is not good. The family still insists that the neurosurgeon complete the surgery.

1. What are the ethical and legal issues in this case study. Be specific and support your response with references

Once you have the patient in the room and you are prepped and ready for surgery, the phone rings. You receive word that the patient signed DNR orders two days ago.

2. As the OR nurse what are your legal and ethical issues now? Was the patient of sound mind when he signed this order? Do you honor the DNR or the family’s wishes? Explain and support your response.

Identifying Career Trends in Your Industry

Instructions

In Week 3, you conducted research into your academic program to learn more about what skills you would get from your courses, and how you might leverage what you learned to secure an internship or job in your field of interest. Last week you explored education and training requirements, job tasks, and other information about your career of interest. Now you will conduct research to find the current trends in your desired industry and provide a brief summary of your findings. This assignment will be in the form of a professional email to your supervisor, Ms. Smith.

Writing Prompt
Imagine that you work for a company directly related to your major. Your company is preparing for expansion and your boss, Ms. Smith, has been asked to design an orientation program for new employees. As part of this process, Ms. Smith has asked you to do some research into the trends in your organization’s industry that new employees will need to know about and understand.

She has asked you to write a detailed email that identifies the three top emerging public safety trends in your industry to incorporate into the new training. If she likes your work on this initial research, she will ask you to take the lead on this portion of the training, allowing you to get leadership experience and name recognition within the organization.

While you have been with the company for some time, you haven’t had much opportunity to focus on training others. You think you have a sense of the industry but know you need to do more research to be accurate in your analysis. The ability to spot emerging trends in your industry is an important skill, and your boss wants to ensure that new employees are up to speed as quickly as possible.

To begin your research, access your CareerQuest account and review the available resources. You can use Vault through Career Services, or the Subject Guides available from UMGC’s Library. You can also use other online resources to conduct additional industry research. Just remember to appropriately cite and reference your resources. You can learn more about citations and references at the Library’s Writing and Citing page. If you have questions about what type of citations to use, please ask your instructor.

Your assignment is to produce a well-researched email in which you identify three emerging trends in your industry and discuss each one briefly.

Assignment Instructions

  • Compose a professional email (about 300 words) providing a response to the prompt above. You may use this template to format your email.
  • Use the career planning resources in CareerQuest, the Subject Guides from the library, and additional industry websites to research information to include in your response.
  • Use effective writing skills to communicate the information to Ms. Smith.

Week 10 Abnormal Psychology Extra credit

This Assignment is extra credit and will be worth up to 8 points. You will be required to watch one of the two movies and answer the one set of questions that go along with the movie you watched. Remember your length requirement and to write the answers in essay form. Remember for up to 8 points you only need to watch one of the movies and answer only the questions that pertain to that movie.

Remember the length requirement for assignments and to write your answer in essay form, all questions answered in one essay.

Choose One Movie

Option 1

Hollywood Film Activity:  One Flew Over the Cuckoos’ Nest (1975 Drama; Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher; 2 hrs, 16 min).  This Academy Award winning film is about an ex-prisoner who rallies his fellow patients in a state hospital.  The questions below are derived from this film.

  1. Describe some of the violations of human rights and abuses of power that are depicted in this film.
  2. Given what you have learned about psychiatric treatment, is this film accurate?  Was it accurate when the film was released in 1975?
  3. Is Randle P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) mentally ill?  Why or why not?
  4. Is it ever ethical to treat someone who refuses treatment?  If yes, in what circumstances?  If yes, who should have the power to make the decision?

Option 2

Hollywood Film Activity:  The Hours (2002 Drama; Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep; 1 hr, 56 min).  Based on the Pulitzer-winning novel by Michael Cunningham, this film focuses on the interwoven stories of three women living in three different places during three different eras. The questions below are derived from this film.

  1. Discuss how depression and suicide shape the lives of each of the three central characters: Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman), Laura Brown (Julianne Moore), and Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep).  What experiences do these women share in common?
  2. One explanation for why depression is much more prevalent in women than men is that societal gender roles restrict women’s ability to feel in control of their own lives.  Discuss to what extent societal gender roles during the three time periods shown in the film (Sussex in 1923, Los Angeles in 1951, and New York in 2001) affected the choices made by the three main characters.
  3. Did you feel any hope by the end of this film, or only despair?  Explain.

Module Case 4 – MGT 423- APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY

For this assignment, first carefully review the required background materials. Make sure you remember the standard organizational development approaches covered in Module 1. Then make sure you understand the main principles of Appreciative Inquiry and how they compare to traditional organizational development approaches (action research, problem-solving). It is also important to understand what is involved in each of the “5 Ds” – Define, Discovery, Dream, Design, and Destiny.

When you are finished reviewing the background materials, go through each of the scenarios below and apply what you’ve read to these scenarios. For each scenario, cite at least one of the required readings to support your answer. You should cite at least three of the four required readings in your paper. Your paper should be 4–5  pages in length:

  1. A corporation notices that suddenly turnover in the human resource department has been extremely high. This corporation prides itself on having a dedicated and committed workforce, so this high turnover in one department is highly troubling for this company. Normally the human resource department investigates when there is a high turnover rate in a department. But since the human resource department is now the department with the high turnover rate, the CEO decides that an outside consultant should be hired to investigate the high turnover rate and propose solutions. Should this team use an Appreciative Inquiry consultant, or hire a more traditional Organizational Development consultant? Explain your reasoning with references to the required readings.
  2. An organization hires an Appreciative Inquiry consultant to help the company get back on track and improve the performance of its product design team. The consultant starts by asking members of the team how they would like the team to perform and what their ideal vision of the team would be. The consultant collects all of this input and designs a detailed plan regarding how to achieve this ideal future that the team dreams about. However, once this detailed plan is presented to the team they are all shocked that the consultant came up with such an unrealistic plan. Team members say that the expenses involved in this plan are far beyond their budget, and they would also need to hire many new team members in order to achieve this plan in a realistic time frame. They all agree it would be great if they had the time and money to implement this plan, but they also are in consensus that this plan presented by the consultant is highly unrealistic. What do you think went wrong? What steps do you think the Appreciative Inquiry consultant could have taken to make the consulting process go better? Refer to the specific “5 Ds” of Appreciative Inquiry in your answer.
  3. A group of ten friends decides to start a new social networking company and put their savings together to start this new business. The company grows rapidly for the first five years and morale is very high in the company during this time. Everyone gets along very well and they work together cooperatively in order to continuously improve the company and its services. However, after five years the company stops growing and seems to reach a plateau. Morale seems to drop and there is now noticeable tension between employees including the top leadership team. They are not sure what to do revive the company, so they decide to hire a consultant. Should this team use an Appreciative Inquiry approach or a more traditional organizational development approach? Explain your reasoning with references to the required readings.
  4. A large supermarket chain decides they would like to expand to have an online division where consumers can order online and have their groceries delivered directly to their homes. The supermarket decides to create a special taskforce to come up with a detailed plan on how they should develop and manage the new online division. This taskforce includes a diverse variety of employees including those from the marketing department, accounting department, inventory department, and most of the main departments. These employees do not have much experience working with each other since they are from different departments. After meeting regularly for a few months, the taskforce makes almost no progress and are constantly bickering. Management is concerned that the online division will never get off the ground. To get back on track and find a way to function more smoothly, should this taskforce use an Appreciative Inquiry approach or a more traditional organizational development approach? Explain your reasoning with references to the required readings.
