Option 2: What were your scores for the Value Orientation exercise in this week’s chapter reading? What are your thoughts about your orientation and how it makes you an effective leader? Note: You can take a photo of your results and post them with your initial discussion post.

For this week, I completed Exercise 7-1 Personal Values – What Is Important to You?, (Manning and Curtis, 2019, 114-120).  My scores are as follows;

I am not surprised by the results, and feel they are a reflection of what my Value Orientation has always been.  I know I find my values within the intangible.  Rather than money, influence and power, I seek strong emotional bonds and a higher understanding of the world around me.  It is a struggle for me to utilize these values for effective leadership.  I tend to be a push over.  But, I do function well as a teammate and coworker.  I guess those that I work with see different value than I in some respects. 

While this is how I view myself at this time, I have faith that my abilities as a leader can improve.  Now that I have a clear view of what I bring to the table, I can better “sell” myself as a potential leader. While personal values are regarded as largely a product of early development, people have the ability to purposely adjust in a mindful way.  One way a person can hone their self awareness and apply their personal values to ethical decision making is through formal education.  Conejo and Loyd (2020) state, “Consistent intentional opportunities for exploration and application of professional values in students’ formal education would support early professional values development,” (119).  In short, I am becoming a better leader during this class because of the exposure to the concept and the opportunities to “flex” my leadership potential.

Research Paper Assignment

In order to allow you to demonstrate your grasp of theory and the applicability of theory to policy and future research, each of you will draft a 7-9 page research paper. The other purpose is for you to have the opportunity to engage with a theoretical perspective of interest to you in more detail. Finally, this project serves to advance your research, analytical, and writing skills.  There are five components to the assignment. Discuss the points below in the order listed, and separate the sections using headings. Next, discuss the origins of the theory you chose (e.g., historical events, earlier theories that influenced its development, background of the theorist(s) that influenced its development).  The information in this section means that you must pick a single theory (not a theoretical school) and that includes identifying the theorist(s). You cannot say that you focused on control theory when there is more than one control theory. Whose control theory is your focus, and what is the name of that theory?

3.  Theoretical Testing: Describe and analyze the empirical/scholarly/peer-reviewed studies that researchers used to test the causal arguments of your theory, and discuss your responses to the following questions. The bulk of your sources should be tests of your chosen theory, such that they allow you to address this section. All of those sources must be addressed in this section in a literature review format rather than a discussion of each source individually.

a.  What types of offenses did researchers testing your chosen theory examine?

b.  What conclusions did the authors draw about the ability of your chosen theory to explain, in whole or in part, the types of offenses examined? Specifically, did they find the theory offered a viable explanation for the commission of these offenses, or did they find the theory was ineffective in explaining the commission of these offenses?

c.  What was the basis of the conclusions that the researchers drew?

d.  What limitations did the researchers note about their studies, and what did you find to be limitations?

e.  Based on your assessment of the studies testing your chosen theory, how valuable do you find your chosen theory for explaining crime generally, a specific category of crime (e.g., violent/personal) or a specific type of crime (e.g., terrorism, robbery, murder, theft)?

4.  Future Research: Based on the points you raised in the second content area, address what you see as general issues that future research needs to examine.  Address the following questions in doing so.

a.  What offense(s) would you study if you conducted a study testing this theory? Consider what you noted in section 3e.

b.  What would you hypothesize about the offense(s) given the provisions of your chosen theory?

5.  Conclusion: Summarize the main points and then discuss at least one policy recommendation that you would advocate to address the offense(s) you discussed in section 3e. You need to use a minimum of eight sources. Preferably, all of the sources should involve a test of your chosen theory, but at minimum, six of the sources must be a test of the theory. If you cannot find that many sources for your paper that meet that requirement, then you need to pick a new theory that allows you to meet this requirement. Trying to Sell Your Audio System

You are trying to sell your audio system (an amplifier and speakers) to raise money for an upcoming trip overseas. The system works great, and an audiophile friend tells you that if he were in the market for this kind of equipment (which he isn’t), he’d give you $500 for it. A few days later the first potential buyer comes to see the system. The buyer looks it over and asks a few questions about it. You assure the buyer that the system works well. When asked how much, you tell the buyer that you have already had an offer for $500. The buyer purchases the system for $550. 

Justify and explain your decision to lie about having the second offer, and what were the consequences of your decision to lie to the buyer. The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

·  Write between 750 – 1,250 words (approximately 3 – 5 pages) using Microsoft Word in APA style, see example below.

·  Use font size 12 and 1” margins.

·  Include cover page and reference page.

·  At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.

·  No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.

·  Use at least three references from outside the course material, one reference must be from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the three reference requirement.

Over the years, nursing informatics (NI) has become a growing professional specialty. What was once a nurse interested in computers has now advanced to a formally taught vocation focused on data, knowledge, and information. “NI has become a viable and essential nursing specialty with the introduction of computers and the electronic health record (EHR) to health care” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018, p. 129).

An experience where I vividly remember interacting with NI was when Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) was initiated at my place of employment. CPOE is a process that allows health care providers to input medical orders electronically in a hospital setting, thereby eliminating the use of written paper or verbal orders. Many of the physicians were accustomed to the “traditional” way of inputting orders (paper, telephone, or fax), so nursing informaticists were utilized around the clock to assist them with their issues and questions as needed.

NI worked to improve our healthcare system by decreasing medication errors and increasing safe use (Randhawa et al., 2019). NI remained solely responsible for the systems accuracy, maintenance, and proper design; they were the leaders of generating a securer, more effective EHR.

One strategy on how interactions with NI could improve would be the accessibility of contact regarding CPOE and the overall EHR.  We use Meditech, and our version is prehistoric. Although we rarely have updates, it can be frustrating for the nursing staff and physicians. Suppose an in-house, on-call nursing informaticist was easily accessible to take immediate concerns or questions at any hour. In that case, we could remedy the problem and build a cohesive, synergistic relationship that would benefit the organization and the relationship between NI and bedside staff.

NI and health information technology (HIT) will continue to grow and eventually be an essential part of every domain in the nursing practice (Jouparinejad et al., 2020). Because NI supports evidence-based practice (EBP), it should have an encouraging effect on professional interactions, particularly nursing practice, as we strive to reduce healthcare costs, promote patient safety, and enhance healthcare quality. As new technologies are developed and utilized, the relationship between the NI department and bedside nurses must remain transparent as feedback is necessary for growth, competency, and overall success.
