Goal: The goal of this assignment is for the student to analyze a current affairs article about a religion and discuss its economic impact.

Description:

Throughout your studies in World Religions, you have been introduced to a variety of religious worldviews that are impacting a society and the marketplace in a variety of ways that can be both positive and negative for a community. The task for your Week #5 Project is to write a Current Affairs Worldview Essay that demonstrates the contemporary application as to how and in what ways a particular religion is impacting a society’s economy and marketplace today. You will want to research articles that clearly reference specific financial data including special financial studies and reports, profit/loss reports, Gross National Products (GNP), and financial percentages that are being generated for a particular locale as the result of a religion that we have or will study only in this class.

An example of a possible title for such an article might be this: (“Study Finds Islamic Sholat Reducing Saudi Arabia GNP”). Here, the specific locale is Saudi Arabia – the religion impacted is Islam – the issue is that the time Muslims spend in daily prayer (Sholat) results in a financial loss of production for time away reducing Saudi Arabia’s GNP by 2% annually. Your article should highlight clear financial data as opposed to generalizations. (Ex: in the above article it points out that lost production in Saudi Arabia resulted in a 2% loss to the Gross National Product (GNP) or a loss of 3 trillion US dollars over last year.)

The key to this assignment is to think outside of the box and use your critical thinking skills to practically apply the course materials on religion and transfer that thinking in such a way to consider how a religion might impact the economy? If you have trouble finding an article or resource, you can always “Contact a Librarian” from the APUS Trefry Library who will be able to assist you. 

Note that this is not a research essay where you seek out a variety of resources to highlight your topic. Here, you are to focus on just one (1) single article and offer your review of it in terms of a summary of the content and your personal application of it for your study of world religions. (See the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Book Review Handout for detailed information and examples.) There should only be one (1) resource listed in your Works Cited page.

Your essay should include the following and should have a publication date of 5 years or less:

• Seek out and read a Current Affairs article of      interest that details a contemporary religious worldview from among those      we will study in this class and the impact it is having on a particular      marketplace and economy in society today.
• These types of articles can be found in a variety of      resources including the Online Library, our Course Guide, journals,      newspapers, magazines, documentaries, news and world financial reports,      websites, and through online searches.
• Pick just one (1) article and write a 2-3 page      review and analysis of just that one article. Your review should be in the      form of a literary review or a movie review encouraging your audience to      either read or ignore it.
• Provide all of the required bibliographical material      and citations for locating the resource including title, date of      publication, publisher, website, and all retrieval information.
• Your essay is best written in two parts:
  • Summarize the main content of the article written       from a Third Person perspective.
  • Provide your personal analysis of the article from       a First Person perspective including:
    • The main purpose why this author wrote the        article?
    • What were the strengths and weaknesses of this        article and why?
    • Evaluate the financial data and does it support        the thesis?
    • How does the article relate to this course of        study and a religious worldview impacting an economy?
    • Identify new insights gained from the article.
    • Offer your personal recommendation for the article        and why?

Read all classmates’ Discussion Posts and critique two (2) other student’s “Memorandum to the Superintendent.” Candidates’ response posts to their classmates’ memorandum should include (a) their reactions to each memorandum, (b) how/why their actions to the scenario might be similar or different, (c) additional case law and statutes that could have been included, and (d) at least two questions that are thought provoking and probing.

Subject: To settle the dispute with Lucy’s parents

As directed by the school attorney Garcia, I am writing you this memo to assert both parties on immediate settlement. The concrete responsibility imposed by this viewpoint, according to well-known tort law concepts, is that instructors and officials must act toward students as reasonable, responsible persons or parents in comparable situations. This criterion does not make teachers responsible for children’s safety. If a kid is wounded despite school employees acting like the reasonable, sensible parent in the circumstances, the teacher or administration cannot be held liable(Murphy, 2015). Clear accidents are not the responsibility of the instructor or administrator. It is evident that determining negligence based on whether instructors and authorities acted toward students as a normal, sensible parent would under the exceedingly complicated circumstances present in various school scenarios is not easy. It is significantly more difficult than applying the same standard to the actions of the coach. Because the vast majority of fact situations asserting teacher negligence will possess a matter that will not justify a law verdict in favor of either the petitioner or the defendant, a court will most commonly be instructed to consider whether a teacher or administrator did such acts or overlooked to take such a precaution that undesired consequences would result (McCarthy, Shelton, & Murphy, 2016). Given the possible hazard, conservative guidance indicates that such focus should not be explicit for an extended period of time. Similarly, courts, on the other side, have clarified that the teacher is not required to keep the exact details where each phase of action is being conducted under constant and relentless supervision. There is also no requirement that general supervision is ongoing and direct. This philosophy is merely a straightforward acknowledgment of the realities of the circumstance.

Keeping in point the legal methods for the coach and parents, the situation can never seem to get settled as the dispute in the court usually takes time and money, and it would be the same cost for both of the parties. However, settling the issue with Lucy’s parents will be best for both parties, and it will also save additional complexities. Conversely, the image of the school is relatively important to us, and our priority should be to deal with such matters calmly. No doubt, Lucy was injured badly and suffered severe issues; she is deliberately in need of serious medical attention and additional care expense. As mentioned before, Lucy’s parent has a strong grip on the case because their kid was injured, however, on the other hand, the coach has also strong claim that he trained and advised students on the basis of safety precautions and school standards, and he was sure of Lucy’s post-medical condition. Therefore, the situation might end on the same verdict to settle the dispute on the legal rules and courtship. I believe that you will take these considerations into account and do what is appropriate.

Case: Leadership: Rising from the Ranks

After working four years as an assistant health services manager at Carter Hospital, William Ford was promoted to Health Services Administrator of the Center. William was very excited as he recently earned his degree in Health Service Management making him eligible to apply for the position. William can now take the lead and put to use all of his years of study. Following a general meeting at which his promotion was announced, William found himself surrounded by three longtime coworkers who had also applied for the job and were his classmates while obtaining their Health Service Management degrees. They offered their congratulations and made other observations and comments.

“I’m really happy for you,” said John Clinton. “This sounds like a terrific career step, one that we were all looking forward to. I suppose this means our carpool is affected, since your hours are bound to be a lot less predictable from now on.”

Rose Bush said, “And I guess that shoots the lunch bunch and the bowling league as well. Management commitments, you know.” The emphasis on management was subtle though undeniable, and William was not at all sure that he was pleased with what he was hearing. 

Sarah Jackson offered, “Well, maybe now we can get some action on a few age-old problems and make the necessary changes around here. Remember, William, you used to gripe about these things as much as the rest of us.”

“We’ve all complained a lot,” Rose agreed. “That’s been sort of a way of life around here.” The tone of her voice shaded toward a suggestion of coolness and her customary smile was absent when she added; “Now William is going to be in a position where he can do something, so let’s hope he doesn’t forget who his friends are.”

John and Sarah looked quickly from Rose to William. For an awkward 10 seconds or so nobody spoke. At last someone passing by said something to William, and as William turned to respond, Rose, John, and Sarah went their separate ways.

1.  What are the possible disadvantages that might present themselves to William because he has long been a member of this group? 

 2. If you were William, how do you believe your promotion would affect your relationships with your former coworkers? 

3.  Describe how you believe William will need to proceed in establishing himself as the legitimate possessor of supervisory authority at the center. 

  

In your reply posts, identify the consequences if sexual health among aging adults continues to be ignored. Additionally, discuss whether there is concern for future generations of older adults who lack sexual health knowledge and awareness.

The prevalence of sexual stigmas in older adults is a concern for the lack of overall well-being of an individual. Although there are multiple factors that come to play in sexual stigmas there are two that I found most interesting from reading Syme and Cohn (2016). One is that older adults are not as likely to seek help for sexual concerns. This may be attributed to embarrassment, unawareness of sexual problems and/or discomfort talking about sex, and stigma-related beliefs with their healthcare providers. Research shows that declines in erectile function in men and the ability to become sexually aroused in women were significantly associated with depressive symptoms, and lower quality and satisfaction with life (Jackson et al., 2018). The other stigma is that older age groups are more conservative about their attitudes towards sexual activity outside of marriage. 

One interesting statement that helped me understand where stigmas originated from in this article is regarding generational beliefs. Perhaps the natural shift from the silent generation to the baby boomer generation may alleviate some sexual stigmas among older adults. This is possible because baby boomers were advocates of the 1960 and 1970s sexual revolution, they pushed the boundaries of sexual expression and relationships, even baby boomers who did not participate in the sexual revolution and lived the expected heterosexual monogamous marriage life no longer conform to these social norms as older adults (Freak-Poli, 2020). 

Topics related to sex are often uncomfortable for healthcare providers to initiate. Some research suggests healthcare providers are concerned about offending older patients and nurses felt concerned that they may jeopardize professional relationships by discussing sexual issues (Taylor & Gosney, 2011). As healthcare providers we need to be aware of stigmas, so we may break down barriers through education, training, and allowing time to discuss sexual issues. By doing so we may be able to support open dialogue with the elderly regarding sexuality and sexual activity. This must include discussing the risks of unprotected sex, unwanted sexual advances especially in the setting of dementia, and healthy maintenance of relationships among elderly clients or patients through open communication.

 In the study conducted by Syme and Cohn (2016), I found it to be interesting there was more stigma among the aging population than in the other two age groups studied. My thought would be the younger age group would have more stigmatic relationships towards the aging population due to stereotypes, generalizations, and being more judgmental. Attitudes towards older populations can be changing while older populations still have the same beliefs from when they were younger. Another interesting point made by the authors was “aging stigma is present within health care institutions” (Syme and Cohn 2016). The goal of any health care worker should be to treat and address the needs of their patients in a manner that is free from judgment and stigmas. Patients trust their health care workers to treat them with the utmost care. This article explained how there are different factors as to why stigmas exist amongst the aging population when it comes to sex. Age, gender, race, income are factors that may influence how one views sex and seniors. The authors detailed how health care workers are able to combat this issue in a way that is applicable to any provider. A leader in a residential health care facility should take charge by providing workshops for the staff on how to address sexual relationships that exist in the facility. The workshop should combat any stigmas, assumptions, and judgments that exist in any of the providers. Ageist stigmas should not be tolerated in the facility. Health care workers can learn communication skills on this topic in the workshop and know what health screenings a patient who is in a sexual relationship needs. It should be a standard that health care workers ensure their patients are engaging in healthy relationships by having discussions with the residents and holding informational meetings. When residents are having their physicals, a questionnaire can be given regarding their sexual history and if they would like to discuss it with their provider. Brochures can be given out to residents on how sexual relationships at their age is healthy and ways to be safe when pursuing relationships. Challenges can arise when having discussions because the residents may be embarrassed to have a conversation or have a fear of being judged. It can also be uncomfortable for health care workers to have those discussions.
