CLIENT

Hallie is an eleven year old white female in the 5th grade. She typically arrives at school very early and stays very late, spending the extra time studying for her classes. Her mood has changed substantially at school recently, going from appearing happy and enthusiastic, to appearing depressed, tired, and uninterested. Hallie is displaying a noticeable weight loss causing teachers to be concerned. When a teacher asked Hallie how things were going she began to cry and said that her mother was drinking and staying away from home a lot. Hallie visits her dad every other weekend. He has recently become engaged to be married to a woman and they are expecting a baby.

2 (On cheating, dishonesty, and scandals)

Dan Ariely’s research on dishonesty suggests that, regardless of how underhandedly we may sometimes act, most of us still want to think of ourselves as being well-meaning, upright, and decent.  This may create a certain tension between our self-image and our more opportunistic tendencies. Still, it seems that most of us can find rationalizations for various actions that we might, upon further reflection, admit are unethical by the metrics of normative moral philosophy (deontology, consequentialism, or virtue ethics). As Ariely has also explained, this can lead us down a slippery slope. Sometimes, what starts out as mild moral sloppiness, along with just a few seemingly insignificantly dishonest actions, eventually escalates into very unfortunate situations.

In this context, your assignment is first to identify a recent business or government scandal (or disgraceful event) that was caused by unethical and/or illegal actions which most people would condemn (at least in retrospect).   Next, your task is to carefully review the information that you have about the event in question. Then, in the context of Ariely’s arguments and based on the event that you selected short imagining and reconstructing how the situation in question might have started out and how it might have escalated to its eventual and unfortunate conclusion. Accounting for Private Versus Public Companies

In this assignment, you will compare accounting principles for private and public companies. As you may have discovered as you’ve reviewed the materials for this course, most of what is learned in accounting courses focuses on public companies, not private ones. GAAP, as you have also learned from your studies, may be followed by private companies, but it is only required to be used by publicly traded companies. FASB, of course, is designated by the SEC to establish and improve GAAP, so their focus is primarily on publicly traded companies.

FASB has also recognized the importance and potential impact of private company financial statements. According to Forbes, out of the 5.7 million firms with employees in the United States, less than 1 percent have shares listed on a U.S. exchange. Although we tend to think of private companies as small companies, the reality is quite the opposite, with private firms accounting for 86.4 percent of U.S. firms with 500 or more employees.

In recognition of the growing importance and impact of private companies, FASB has come up with a useful publication: Private Company Decision-Making Framework: A Guide for Evaluating Financial Accounting and Reporting for Private Companies.

In this guide, FASB identifies the following five Significant Differential Factors:

  1. Number of primary users and their access to management.
  2. Investment strategies of primary users.
  3. Ownership and capital structure.
  4. Accounting resources.
  5. Learning about new financial reporting guidance.

For this assignment, write a 2–4 page paper in which you:

  • Select two of the differential factors that interest you, and briefly explain why.
  • In your own words, explain the factor and why it is different from a publicly traded company.
  • Identify the accounting risks associated with each of your chosen factors. What would you recommend to minimize those risks?
  • Based on what you have learned this quarter, what components of the Balance Sheet have the most potential to be impacted by the differential factors you have chosen? Identify both positive and negative potential impacts.

Philosophy Statement

A philosophy statement describes what you believe to be true about young children, how they learn best, teaching methods, curriculum, what is the teacher’s role, etc. Philosophy statements are helpful when looking for a position in a children’s center to give the director more information about who you are and how you perceive early childhood education. Since early childhood programs have specific program philosophies, the director would want to be sure that you would be a good fit in their center. Therefore, write this as if you were going to include it with a resume to a potential new employer.

For this assignment, you will write your own philosophy statement.  Your paper should be around two pages in length- double spaced.  In your paper, need to include the following (make sure you address the entire question):

· How do young children learn best? Describe.

· What is the teacher’s role in children’s growth and development? (include physical, cognitive, social, emotional development)

· What theories influence your opinions? How?

· Is there a type of early childhood program you might be more drawn to work in? Why?

Example:

My Philosophy Statement

I believe that young childhood is a time when………….….. Children learn best through………….……. In a

preschool center, the best way to facilitate this is by……………………….…….

My role as a teacher in an early childhood classroom would be …………. I believe this because I have

examined the theories of …………………………………. which says……………………………………………………..I believe

this has merit because……………………………. I believe my teaching philosophy reflects the type of

program philosophies of these types of centers…………………………….. because…………………..…………………..

This is just one way you could set up your paper. Make sure to spell check and grammar check your paper.

Case Analysis Term Project

Book: Strategic Management Concept and Cases

As the capstone project for this course, you will complete a case analysis in which you will demonstrate your understanding of all the key concepts covered throughout the term. You may select any one of the 20 cases included in Part 4 of the textbook.  For details on each of the components, you may reference “Preparing an Effective Case Analysis” on page C-4 in the textbook.

In a paper of no fewer than 2000 words, you must complete a detailed case analysis. The main components (found in Table 2 page C-6) are:

  1. Strategic Profile & Case Analysis Purpose
  2. Situation Analysis
    1. General environmental analysis
    2. Industry analysis
    3. Competitor analysis
    4. Internal analysis
  3. Identification of Environmental Opportunities and Threats, and Firm Strengths and Weaknesses (SWOT analysis)
  4. Strategy Formulation
    1. Strategic Alternatives
    2. Alternative evaluation
    3. Alternative choices
  5. Strategic Alternative implementation
    1. Action items
    2. Action plan

Please follow the basic outline and be sure to use headers to identify each section/component of your analysis.  You will also need to perform research and reference at least 10 outside sources throughout your analysis. While there is a great deal of information contained within the case, examples/details from scholarly, academic resources (or reputable business websites/reports) will lend strong support to your assertions throughout the analysis.

Please remember that all submissions will be checked via Turn-It-In similarity detection software, so be sure to cite your sources properly (both in-text and on the references page at the end). As graduate students, refrain from excessive quoting; best practice entails summarizing the ideas in your own words and using a citation to note the source of the idea you’re summarizing. Use APA style, as this is the preferred style for the Business field.

Economics and Finance

Do you believe in MM proposition effective to explain a firm’s capital structure in the capital market? We have learned a revised version of the formula originated from the MM proposition in this chapter, then we now simply summarize their financial choice: benefit and cost. You can now have a theoretical framework for why a firm presents such a level of debt (or equity) based on a simple framework and factors, then I believe it’s a really useful summary for understanding the player’s move in the market. However, you could not agree with all these theories. Do you agree or disagree with MM proposition or optimal capital trade-off theory? Why or why not? Could you explain your reasons with illustrative examples, actual phenomena, or any reliable sources to support your argument?

You are now an undergraduate expert in corporate finance. The whole semester, starting with a time cost valuation method like NPV, we almost finalize our knowledge trip with a simple, but powerful framework to explain the firm’s financial behavior in the market. It’s not limited to US companies, but also any corporate entities in the world faced with the same problems and they decide their structure to continue and survive. But as you see in the textbook, there are still many unclear parts of the capital market and the firm’s behavior. Before you jump into the complicated world, I really want to ask your philosophical mind to understand the theory. Based on all we have learned in this course, what do you think? Could you give me some details, reasons and your “faith”?

    Scenario
You are the Manager of Learning & Development in the Human Resources Department of a publicly traded company. Your organization has just hired a new CEO who wants to change the strategic direction of the company drastically. Such a drastic change means that the culture of the organization will need to change to support the new strategic direction.

As the HR Department prepares to support the new change initiative, you have been directed by the VP of HR to create a training manual for the mid-level managers. This training manual should be designed to help the mid-level managers understand the impact of organizational culture change in the change initiative.

    Instructions
The training manual should be formatted with bulleted points for each topic; discussion prompts, and include the amount of time needed to cover each topic. This training manual should also incorporate an exercise in which mid-level managers would brainstorm behavioral descriptors for each new cultural value and articulate how those would translate into actionable behaviors.

    Prepare a training manual that:

    • Distinguishes the cultural variables that inhibit or support change.
    • Discusses principles of change and how organizational culture develops through the stages of change.
    • Details how the organizational culture change can be both radical and incremental to support business strategy.

Case Study Project, First Draft

For this final project you will continue with the social issue that you selected (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth) and you will write an essay where you discuss your perspective. You will use the ideas and information from the summary-response and the quote log to write your case study. You will submit a first draft and a revised draft of this assignment.

Content

  • Describe a “real life” instance of your selected social issue in a professional or a personal setting.
  • Discuss your perspective on your selected social issue, including the reasons for your viewpoint.
  • Discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue.
  • Demonstrate that you are really thinking about your issue—don’t settle for easy answers, don’t pretend that conflicting evidence doesn’t exist, and don’t feel that you have to take an either-or position.
  • Discuss the complexities of your selected social issue. For example, do not just conclude that using academic language is always good, or that government surveillance is always bad, or that wealth automatically leads to health. Think about the intricacies of these issues and how they play out in everyday life.

Organization

  • Include an introductory paragraph, where you clearly outline a “real-life” instance of your social issue and you give a thesis statement that indicates your perspective (see Part 2: Writing Your Introduction for an example).
  • Include three body paragraphs where you include details, examples, and quotes from at least three of the course readings to help you develop and support your key points (see Part 3: Writing Your Body Paragraphs. for an example).
  • Include one body paragraph where you discuss how your core values inform or influence your perspective on your selected social issue (see Part 3: Writing Your Body Paragraphs. for an example).
  • End your essay with a concluding paragraph where you restate your thesis, summarize your key points, and leave the reader with the “so what?” ( see Part 4: Writing Your Conclusion for an example).

Grammar and Mechanics

  • Your paper should be written according to the standards for academic writing, with attention to the following:
    • punctuation: this includes things such as use of commas, colons, and apostrophes.
    • word-level accuracy: this includes things such as capitalization, spelling, word-tense, and usage.
    • sentence-level accuracy: this includes things such as sentence boundaries, subject-verb agreement, and pronoun-antecedent agreement.
  • Take time to proofread after you’ve written your essay. Think about your own writing habits you might want to change  (like using “text-speak” or sentence fragments) and watch out for those. Reading your paper aloud is a good way to catch any mistakes.

Sources and Documentation

  • You are required to use three sources for this assignment. Your sources should be selected from the assigned course readings on your selected issue (language and power; freedom and security; health and wealth).
  • Your paper should use APA-style documentation for in-text citations. You do not need to complete a reference page.

Format and Length

  • Your paper should include a header consisting of your name and the assignment name and a title tailored to your topic. (See example below.)
  • Your paper should be typed, double-spaced and in 12-point font.
  • Your final product should be a minimum of six paragraphs (about 900-1100 words) in length. However, the quality of the content of this essay is most important. Be sure to fully answer the prompt.
