The language of qualitative research can be confusing. The words sound like regular English, but they have very particular meanings. To make the language even more complicated, the definitions can vary across different qualitative methodological scholars. 

 

For the purpose of this course, distinctions between two important concepts should be considered:

1. Theoretical framework: the use of constructs and propositions a recognized theory (or theories) to a research problem, purpose, and question.
   • Examples: Social Influence theory, transformational leadership theory, game theory
2. Conceptual framework: the construction of ideas, assumptions, and beliefs sourced in both the literature and one’s own experience, which identify the main concepts that guide the formulation of the research problem, purpose, and question.
   • Examples: Concepts from positive psychology, mindfulness meditation, language development models

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review the Learning Resources related to the use of a theoretical or conceptual framework to guide the examination of a research problem in qualitative research.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Run 1 – Run the starting simulation with the default or starting parameters. Run for 200 iterations (you see the number of iterations when you open the population graph).  Plea bargaining is a fixture in the American Criminal justice system. A lot of work can go into a properly constructed plea bargain, but to some it may seem like the easy way out. The written assignment this week is for you to thoroughly discuss the pros and cons of the plea bargain as used in the American court system, and to describe why the plea bargain is used so often, the mechanics of how a plea bargain comes about, and what some of the positive and negative outcomes of using it are.

Scenario:

Everybody is in an uproar at Hometown High School. Somebody did a job with spray cans on the high school. The graffiti looks suspiciously like something you saw at a recent drive- in conference on gangs. Other teachers in the lounge mention the fact that this stuff has also been showing up on buildings around town. While this discussion is going on, the librarian says that she picked up some hard copy dropped beside one of the computers that looks like it might be about some outfit that labels itself “Growth and Development” and its contents seem to be directed toward some kid with the computer screen name “Deaddog.” The contents seem to have something to do with how one goes about establishing a “Growth and Development” chapter in Hometown (hint: the Gangster Disciples camouflage their movements by using words that start with “G” and “D”) and talks about something called “tagging.” The school board has called a special meeting to talk about this problem. You remember that a new kid has come to town from Detroit. He also seems to be wearing his clothes a certain way and constantly has on colors that you vaguely remember the speaker at that gang conference talked about. The new kid has generated quite a following. He seems to have a lot of money, a “kul” car, and a number of kids who are not going to be National Merit Scholars are hangin’ with him.

Bereavement is the state of loss when someone close to an individual has died. The death of a loved one is one of the greatest sorrows that can occur in one’s life. People’s responses to grief will vary depending upon the circumstances of the death, but grief is a normal, healthy response to loss.
