Sportsmanship and Competition

Students will author an original essay and submit it to the eLearning Assignment: Essay 3. Students will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of values by describing the nature of the values of sportsmanship and competitiveness and how these values may often conflict in society. Describing means to say what some is and to elaborate on all of its characteristics. I find that examples are great ways to describe things. Providing an example allows you to connect with the material and demonstrate that you more fully understand it.

The essay should demonstrate students’ knowledge of values and values conflicts. Specifically, students will address a description of the values of sportsmanship and competition. The student will highlight both values and then discuss instances in which these values can conflict. The essay should describe at least three potential conflicts between these values.

The essay should include an introductory paragraph that explains the minimum three potential conflicts between these values. The student introduction should discuss values and introduce the reader to the essay content. The essay should include a minimum of one supporting paragraph for each point the author is making in response to the prompt. Finally, the essay should include a concluding paragraph that consistently summarizes the author’s response to the essay prompt.

The essays will be evaluated for content, format, and writing quality:

  • The content of the paper consists of the student’s description of the values of sportsmanship and competition and conflicts between these values in society. The content must include accurate values conflicts.
  • The essay format should include the following: a minimum of two double-spaced pages with 1” margins on all sides; sources to support the responses to the prompts; and information that is not the student’s original work or thoughts must be cited in text and be included on a separate reference page. The APA 6th edition formatting guide should be used throughout the paper.
  • The quality of writing will be evaluated based upon the presence of a clear introduction and conclusion, accurate spelling, standard grammar usage, and proper punctuation.

Discussion: Assessing Musculoskeletal Pain

The body is constantly sending signals about its health. One of the most easily recognized signals is pain. Musculoskeletal conditions comprise one of the leading causes of severe long-term pain in patients. The musculoskeletal system is an elaborate system of interconnected levers that provides the body with support and mobility. Because of the interconnectedness of the musculoskeletal system, identifying the causes of pain can be challenging. Accurately interpreting the cause of musculoskeletal pain requires an assessment process informed by patient history and physical exams.

In this Discussion, you will consider case studies that describe abnormal findings in patients seen in a clinical setting.

To prepare:

  • By Day 1 of this week, you will be assigned to one of the following specific case studies for this Discussion. Please see the “Course Announcements” section of the classroom for your assignment from your Instructor.
  • Your Discussion post should be in the Episodic/Focused SOAP Note format rather than the traditional narrative style Discussion posting format. Refer to Chapter 2 of the Sullivan text and the Episodic/Focused SOAP Template in the Week 5 Learning Resources for guidance. Remember that all Episodic/Focused SOAP notes have specific data included in every patient case.
  • Review the following case studies:

Case 1: Back Pain

Photo Credit: University of Virginia. (n.d.). Lumbar Spine Anatomy [Photograph]. Retrieved from http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/courses/rad/ext/5lumbar/01anatomy.html. Used with permission of University of Virginia.

A 42-year-old male reports pain in his lower back for the past month. The pain sometimes radiates to his left leg. In determining the cause of the back pain, based on your knowledge of anatomy, what nerve roots might be involved? How would you test for each of them? What other symptoms need to be explored? What are your differential diagnoses for acute low back pain? Consider the possible origins using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) guidelines as a framework. What physical examination will you perform? What special maneuvers will you perform?

  • Consider what history would be necessary to collect from the patient in the case study you were assigned.
  • Consider what physical exams and diagnostic tests would be appropriate to gather more information about the patient’s condition. How would the results be used to make a diagnosis?
  • Identify at least five possible conditions that may be considered in a differential diagnosis for the patient.

Note: Before you submit your initial post, replace the subject line (“Discussion – Week 8”) with “Review of Case Study ___.” Fill in the blank with the number of the case study you were assigned.

By Day 3 of Week 8

Post an episodic/focused note about the patient in the case study to which you were assigned using the episodic/focused note template provided in the Week 5 resources. Provide evidence from the literature to support diagnostic tests that would be appropriate for each case. List five different possible conditions for the patient’s differential diagnosis, and justify why you selected each.

Political Campaigns, News Media, and Interest Groups

When I took the oath of office, I pledged loyalty to only one special interest group – ‘we the people’.” – Ronald Reagan

No doubt about it, news media and interest groups greatly influence American politics.
Today’s modern media has many components including the news media, which includes print media (newspapers, magazines, etc.), radio (AM news radio, etc.), television (ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, NBC, etc.), and digital (Internet news, social networks, blogs, etc.). (OConner, Sabato, 2018)
The news media can affect public policy via agenda setting and framing:

  • Agenda setting is how individual news media decide what news they will showcase and how important the news story is by providing greater or lesser attention to the news story. (OConner, Sabato, 2018)
  • Framing is how individual news media covers the news story and how such coverage can steer public policy one way or another. (OConner, Sabato, 2018)

Major news media outlets:

Interest groups are non-profit, voluntary organizations that seek to affect public policy. (Boundless, n.d.) Although there are a number of ways to classify interest groups, for the sake of simplicity we shall use this model:

  • Business/Labor/Professional Interest Groups: organizations that want to affect economic public policy that benefits their members.
    • Examples: U.S. Chamber of Commerce, American Medical Association, and American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations
  • Ideological Interest Groups: organizations that advocate public policy based on a set of beliefs.
    • Example: American Conservative Union
  • Public Interest Groups: organizations that want to affect public policy that benefits not just its members but also society.
    • Example: Sierra Club
  • Single Issue Interest Groups: organizations that advocate one public policy concern.
    • Example: National Rifle Association

Many if not most prominent interest groups form Political Action Committees (PACs). PACs are groups that raise funds in order to contribute money to a political candidate and/or officeholder. PACs are limited on how much money they can contribute. As of the 2019-2020 election cycle, PACs can give each candidate and/or officeholder $5000 during the primary and general election. (CRP, 2019)

More information about Political Action Committees (PACs) and Super Political Action Committees (SPACs) can be found on the Center for Responsive Politics Open Secrets website:

See the following for examples of PAC donations to a House of Representative during the 2019-2020 election cycle:

In this week’s discussion, you will analyze a political campaign’s finances, campaign advertising, media coverage, and special interest involvement.

Directions: Using the required, academic readings, and supplemental academic research, please address the following while adhering to the Discussion Board Rubric:

Select a recent candidate or officeholder at the federal level that you considered supporting with your vote. Note: you may reuse the same person from the Unit 7 Discussion. Analyze this person based on the following criteria:

  • Election and Campaign Financing
    • How much money did the person raise and spend during the election campaign?
      • Donations from individuals?
      • Donations from political parties?
      • Donations from Political Action Committees (PACs)?
        • How much – in total – did all the contributing PACs spend during the election campaign on your person?
        • Select two PACs that contributed to the person’s campaign.
          • Provide a brief summary of the political action committee.
          • Analyze the purpose of this political action committee.
          • Does this PAC help or hinder our democracy?
      • Self-financed?
      • What does an analysis of the person’s campaign finances tell you?
  • Campaign Advertising
    • Select one political advertisement from the person’s election campaign.
      • Summarize the advertisement.
      • What was the message?
      • What is the target audience?
      • Was this advertisement effective?
      • Include an APA link to the advertisement or embed the advertisement into the discussion post.
  • The News Media
    • Select one news article, video, or political cartoon about your person’s election campaign.
      • Analyze how the news media sets the agenda and frames the news story regarding your person’s candidacy or current, public service.
      • Articulate, in detail, how this news story helps or hinders your person’s electability.
      • Include an APA link to the news media article, video, or political cartoon.

Response to discussion post. Advanced pharmacology

How do beta-blockers work? What exactly do antibiotics do to the bacteria they target? What effects does an anti-depressant have on blood flow?

Questions like these are related to the underlying pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes of pharmacotherapeutics. As an advanced practice nurse, understanding these fundamental pharmacotherapeutic concepts is important to ensure that the prescription drugs you recommend for your patients will be safe and effective to treat and/or manage their symptoms. Additionally, as the advanced practice nurse, it is your responsibility to ensure that when prescribing prescription drugs, you adhere to the ethical and legal principles set forth for prescribing drugs as an added layer of protection and safety for the patients you will treat.

This week, you will analyze factors that may influence pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics processes of a patient and assess the details of a personalized plan of care that you develop based on influencing factors and patient history. You will also evaluate and analyze ethical and legal implications and practices related to prescribing drugs, including disclosure and nondisclosure, and analyze the process of writing prescriptions to avoid medication errors.

One patient case from my experience that addresses the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics is where my patient was a 55 years old female, of African American decent, had a history of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension. The patient was presented to our hospital with severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Assessment and lab work showed the patient’s blood glucose was 605mg/dL, HgA1C 8.5%, cholesterol 180 mg/dl, weight 290 lbs, height 68inches, BP 90/75, pulse 118, Respiration 23 bpm. Patient stated she had been very stressed lately and had mostly been dining out at fast-food restaurants and has not had the time to exercise. Patient had been prescribed insulin however, she stated she has not been checking her blood glucose level like she should have.

This patient was presenting with symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a medical emergency that occurs when the body is unable to produce adequate insulin to decrease blood glucose level and leads to the production of high levels of acids in the blood called ketones (Alshammari et. al., 2017). This was a medical emergency that required immediate intervention of fluid repletion and the administration of insulin. It also involved the frequent monitoring of patient’s vital signs, glucose levels, and electrolyte levels.

Factors that might have influenced pharmacokinetics of insulin the patient was receiving are diet (eating fatty foods or foods high in carbohydrates increases glucose levels in the body), stress (cortisol increases insulin resistance), and lack of exercise. Eating a balanced diet decreases the likelihood that the patient will consume mostly foods high in fats and carbohydrates. When someone is stressed, the body produces stress hormones called cortisol which to a diabetic patient can significantly affect their health because it causes the body to release more glucose and to become resistant to the insulin the patient needs to reduce that blood glucose to a healthy level (Alshammari et. al., 2017). Exercise redistributes and lowers the blood glucose level. It could cause patients to go into hypoglycemia that is why it is important to check glucose levels before, during, and after exercise.

The personalized care plan that I would develop for this patient would include; a Dietary and lifestyle change plan – here the patient will be educated on how to count her carbohydrates and caloric intake. The Center for Disease Control has dietary guidelines for the different age groups. The site also provides “My Food Diary” (CDC, 2019) a flow sheet to help individuals keep a day-to-day record of how much food is consumed for breakfast, snacks, lunch, and dinner. I would also recommend she exercise regularly but that to check her blood glucose before, during and after exercise. “The adoption and maintenance of physical activity are critical foci for blood glucose management and overall health in individuals with diabetes” (Colberg, 2016). Also, I would suggest she check her blood glucose before each insulin administration, as this may affect the dosage to be administered.

CLA 2 Comprehensive Learning Assessment 2 – CLO 2, CLO 5, CLO 8

Please read the following scenario and answer the questions below by providing the analysis based on the relevant theories and applicable examples.

If your business earns superior profits, existing and potential competitors will do their best to get a piece of the success. It is essential for firms to examine a variety of business strategies to enhance the prospects of sustainable profitability. Out of all factors that impact an industry’s sustainable profitability, this CLA2 assessment focuses on the most damaging threat to sustainable profit, the entry of competitors into the market.

Entry into the market heightens competition and reduces the margins of existing firms in a wide variety of industry settings. For this reason, the ability of existing firms to sustain profits depends on how barriers to entry affect the ease with which other firms can enter the industry including the formation of new companies (Wendy’s entered the fast-food industry in the 1970s); globalization strategies by foreign companies (Toyota entered the U.S. automobile market the middle of the last century) , and the introduction of new product lines by existing firms (computer manufacturer Apple now also sells the popular iPhone).

Your CLA2 is a paper of minimum 6 pages, APA formatted, including one Industry Report and one Company Report that you recommend to the CEO of a company how to create a moat and prevent the threat of entry to the market.

1. Industry Report

Please select an industry and write a rigorous industry report for your selected industry that incorporate the followings:

  • The market structure of the industry by determining the concentration ratio in the industry and how market structure affects the entry into the market
  • The nature of industry and the network effects
  • The production structure of the industry, initial capital requirements, sunk costs, and economies of scale
  • The prospect of industry in the future in regard to technological innovations

2. Company Report

Now assume you are managing a company in this industry and are asked to write a Company Report about the long term strategic decision making of the company. The purpose of this report is to recommend a few policies to the CEO that assures a sustainable competitive advantage and long term profitability for the company.

Please include the following variables in your Company Report:

  • Sustainable market share and how it can be achieved
  • Branding, reputation, and a considerable base of loyal consumers
  • The managerial efficiency in strategic decision making regarding:
  • The integration and merger activity, vertical and horizontal integration
  • Preventing entry of rivals by pricing and cost policies such as limit pricing, predatory pricing, and raising rivals’ fixed or marginal costs

*Please refer to the Grading Criteria for Comprehensive Learning Assessments (CLAs) in the University Policy for specific guidelines and expectations.

CLA2 Comprehensive Learning Assessment (CLA 2) Presentation

In addition to your CLA2 report, please prepare a professional PowerPoint presentation summarizing your findings for CLA2. The presentation will consist of your major findings, analysis, and recommendations in a concise presentation of 6 slides (minimum). You should use content from your CLA2 report as material for your PowerPoint presentation. In addition, you should include learning outcomes from all your major assignments. This would include PA1, CLA1, PA2, and of course, CLA2 (unless otherwise specified by your Professor). An agenda, executive summary, and references slides should also be included.
