Medical Treatment in Prisons

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week on the basis of the course competencies covered.

For this assignment, make sure you post your initial response to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial postings. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week.

A US prison inmate who had complained of stomach pain was scheduled for a visit to a general practitioner a week after the initial symptoms occurred. The general practitioner prescribed him medication for acidity, but his stomach pain continued. The inmate continued to complain about his stomach pain for another three weeks, but was told to give the medicine more time to cure him.

The prison staff finally scheduled another visit to the general practitioner who in turn scheduled the inmate for test scans a couple of weeks later. The scans showed that the inmate was suffering from stomach cancer.

Surgery was performed immediately to remove the tumor. Surgeons also had to remove a part of his stomach during surgery.

The inmate sued the prison, claiming deliberate cruel and unusual punishment because of the time that passed between his initial complaints and diagnosis.

  • Do you think inmates should be granted the right to medical treatment? Why? If yes, what are the rights they should have? What are the arguments against granting such rights?
  • Do inmates have a right to advanced treatment for medical ailments which can be a financial burden on society? Explain, giving reasons, whether or not the society should bear the heavy cost of treating those whom it has put in prison for anti-social activities.
  • What is deliberate indifference toward a prisoner’s health? Explain with reference to a case. Did the officers show deliberate indifference towards this inmate’s health problem? Why do you think so?
  • Would Estelle v. Gamble (1976) support the inmate’s case? Why? What are the points of similarity and difference in both cases?

Support your responses with adequate research and supporting data. Review and comment on the submissions of at least two of your classmates by the end of the week.

Cite any sources using APA format on a separate page. Let’s learn how to cite sources using APA guidelines.

Can someone do my Week 1 Discussion in General Education Capstone?

Reflect: When considering a research topic, consider an interesting topic that is worth further research. For instance, having a strong opinion on a specific topic may deter you from thinking more critically, and therefore the research might end up being one-sided. It is a good idea to pick a topic in which you can provide a good argument for both sides of the societal issue.

Write: For this discussion, address the following prompts:

  • Identify a global societal issue from the following list that you would consider researching further for your Week 5 Final Paper:
    • Climate change
    • Pollution
    • Religious conflict and violence
    • Rise of artificial intelligence
    • Lack of education
    • Unemployment and lack of economic opportunity
    • Government accountability and corruption
    • Food and water security
    • International drug trafficking
    • Poverty and income inequality
  • Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper.
  • Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
  • Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic.
  • Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
  • Download and attach a PDF copy of one of the peer-reviewed scholarly articles that you found from the Ashford University Library to your answer using the “Attach” function located below your response.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length, which should include a thorough response to each prompt. You are required to provide in-text citations of applicable required reading materials and/or any other outside sources you use to support your claims. Provide full reference entries of all sources cited at the end of your response. Please use correct APA format when writing in-text citations (see In-Text Citation Helper (Links to an external site.)) and references (see Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.)).

Is it right to be relativist?

https://video.alexanderstreet.com/watch/fire-eyes-female-circumcision?context=channel:documentary-274#startFrom-78

Use the link above to watch the video.

It is 2019. The federal law banning female circumcision is still under appeal in the courts. You are a nurse assisting a plastic surgeon at a local hospital. The plastic surgeon comes from a country where they practice “female circumcision”. This practice is also sometimes called “female genital mutilation”.

You are not a member of the doctor’s culture, but reside in a state where this practice is still legal. The plastic surgeon has agreed to perform this practice on a young girl, the daughter of a friend of the surgeon. The friend has authorized the procedure. The girl only knows this is a custom. You did not know that today you would be asked to assist in this procedure. You can refuse to participate (your job may be on the line in the future due to that decision). Or, you can assist the surgeon. What ought you to do? We now want to examine the ethical issues involved. To do this, let’s look at the role of relativism, moral truths, and other issues.

address the following questions:

  • What would a subjective moral relativist say about what this doctor is doing? Do you agree with the subjective moral relativist? Why or why not?
  • Examine what a cultural moral relativist would say here. Do you agree with the cultural relativist? Why or why not?
  • Name and evaluate general criticisms of cultural relativism as being the wrong moral approach.
  • Is there an objective moral truth about any of the possible actions by the nurse and/or doctor in this case? Why or why not?

Please write APA format, include intext citations, and 2 scholarly references.

Consider how this control mechanism might apply to promoting a culture of safety as a process improvement initiative in the HSO

Control mechanisms facilitate pathways that health care administrators might consider when deciding how to direct, adjust, and mobilize resources as they apply to day-to-day and business operations. Additionally, control mechanisms assist health care administrators in determining areas where opportunities for improvement might exist in order to facilitate enhanced business and health care delivery practices. https://keenwriter.xyz/uncategorized/veterans-in-addiction/ As a current or future health care administrator, understanding how to interpret and modify control mechanisms is an essential skill that will contribute greatly to your decision-making for enhancing process improvement.

For this Discussion, reflect on the Learning Resources for this week, and consider the findings in the Singer article. Then, select a control mechanism that is most appropriate for your HSO or an HSO with which you are familiar. Consider how this control mechanism might apply to promoting a culture of safety as a process improvement initiative in the HSO you selected.

By Day 3

Post a description of the control mechanism you selected, and explain its relevance to your HSO. Then, https://hybridessays.com/case-studies/im-working-on-a-case-studies-question-and-need-support-to-help-me-learn-covid-1/ explain how you as a current or future health care administrator might apply this control mechanism to promoting a culture of safety in your HSO; explain why you would apply the mechanism in this way.

PAPER ON BODY LANGUAGE-poli sci

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 7, 8
  • Lesson 3
  • APA style manual
  • Citation and Writing Assistance: Writing Papers At CU
  • Library Overview
  • How to Search for Articles – the Everything Tab

Instructions

Social Movements are only as important as the person leading them. The person(s) leading a social movement must have charisma and be able to captivate an audience. Political scientists and historians are taught to analyze body language, especially during debates and speeches.

For this assignment, you will watch Dr Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream (Links to an external site.) speech and a speech by Alicia Garza of the Black Lives Matter movement (Links to an external site.) and answer questions listed below. Pay special attention to the following aspects in the two speeches.

  • Importance of body language while delivering the speech.
  • Gestures, cadence and delivery style.

Answer the following

  1. Provide a summary of the two speeches.
  2. Compare Dr. King’s leadership, charisma, power and passion to capture his audience to Alicia Garza’s speech. What are the similarities, if any? What are the differences, if any?
  3. How does the location of the speeches support their messaging? Dr. King’s speech was held in a church and at the Lincoln Memorial, whereas today we have social networking and more avenues to relay messages. Does messaging make a difference?
  4. Describe how the audience in Dr. King’s speeches relate to the Alicia Garza’s audience. Do you see a similarity or differences in the speeches and in the audience?

Paper Requirements (APA format)

  • Length: 2-3 pages of substantive content

Assignment: Comparing Sociological Theories

As a helping professional, understanding social disorganization theory, social conflict theory, and rational choice theory as three contemporary perspectives on the causes of criminal behavior are essential. Social disorganization theory—such as purported by the Chicago School, which you read about in Week 2—views crime as being a product of neighborhoods and communities that have broken down and are characterized by weak cultural and structural norms, absence of law and order, and high levels of poverty. Social conflict theory assigns the cause of crime to conflict between competing social groups, such as the affluent and the working poor. Rational choice theory emphasizes the decision-making process of criminals and aims to prevent crime by making criminal behavior less attractive and valuable.

Each sociological theory outlined here has strengths and limitations. Applying these theories is likely to yield diverse explanations for the causes of criminal behavior.

For this Assignment, review the article, “The Role of Attenuated Culture in Social Disorganization Theory” and consider the principles of disorganization theory, paying particular attention to various aspects of the theory as explanations for criminal behavior. Then, search the Internet and select peer-reviewed articles that address social conflict theory, social disorganization theory, and rational choice theory.

Assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Briefly describe social conflict theory, social disorganization theory, and rational choice theory.
  • Compare (similarities and differences) social conflict theory, social disorganization theory, and rational choice theory, using specific examples in your comparison.
  • Based on your comparison, describe at least one insight or conclusion you might draw.
  • Use the resources from your research to support your findings.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the resources for this course.

Research + 6 Step Evaluation

There are 2 step of this project. Approved Step 1 then you can start Step 2. Must have posted ANSWER in 5/31

Example of the 6 step evaluation is uploaded

 STEP 1

The first step for this project is to find a topic of interest to you which I will also approve of. I will approve of any topic which meets these criteria:

(a) it must be an unsolved problem of science, specifically one with (at least) two well-defined and disjoint theories (see below for links to unsolved problems in science). That is, each theory is telling a very different causal story about what’s happening that explains the phenomenon in question so that, if one theory is correct, the other must be incorrect. You will just pick the best (in your opinion) two theories, even if there are many. Avoid “theories” that just point to statistical correlations but that do not propose a clear causal account. For instance, suppose some disease D for which science has not yet figured out the pathogenesis. Theory A states that M causes N which causes O which causes D. Theory B states that R causes P which causes O which causes D. You will then weigh the evidence and make a decision which theory is best supported (so far).

(b) Secondly, there must be empirical (experimental) support for each of the two theories. You will not be able to write the prediction or data steps without there being extant empirical research results.

There are many unsolved problems of science that meet these two requirements among the following links:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_biology

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_neuroscience

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_geoscience

https://web.archive.org/web/20161228233544/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_medicine (Links to an external site.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_physics

STEP 2

First, you must select a topic that meets the stated criteria (unsolved problem in science, two disjoint causal theories (i.e., if one theory is right, the other is wrong), an existing body of empirical research supporting each theory). If you have any doubts about your topic selection, you may ask me for confirmation. If you write on a topic not meeting the criteria, you risk getting a zero score.

Next, even if there exist many theories attempting to explain the unsolved problem, you should just identify the two strongest (in your opinion) competing theories. Investigate each theory and its supporting research carefully.

You will write your paper with the same subheadings as used in your homework assignments involving 2 models (as we did in analyzing crucial experiments): Real World, Model 1, Model 2, Prediction 1, Prediction 2, Data, Positive Evidence, Negative Evidence.

Unlike your homework answers, each section will be more expansive and involve more details.

There is a 1000 word minimum, not including the works cited page (which you must include).

Make sure you are putting the right content in the appropriate places (e.g., don’t tell me about data in the “Model” section, etc.). Also, you want to find differing predictions for each model, not matching ones. In the evaluative sections, I will be looking to see how you have carefully weighed the evidence and come to a judicious verdict, declaring one theory the stronger one over the other.

In the evaluative sections (Positive/Negative Evidence sections), you will declare your verdict regarding which theory is the “winner” and which is not, based on your consideration of the quality/quantity of supportive (and/or disconfirming) research and satisfaction (or dissatisfaction) of theoretical virtues.

Lastly, your paper will be processed by TurnItIn.com, so not only should you include a works cited page, you should also make sure any words/ideas not your own are properly quoted and/or cited.
