Assignment: Intercultural Sensitivity Reflection

According to Tervalon and Murray-García (1998), developing cultural humility requires a lifetime commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique. In other words, you must routinely assess what you do not know about cultures that are different from your own. One of the underlying assumptions of culturally humility is that there is always more to learn.

For this Assignment, you will take an ungraded intercultural sensitivity quiz and write a brief reflection paper on your results, which will give you insight about what you still need to learn about different cultures and cultural issues. Please do not prepare for the quiz ahead of time or search the Internet for the correct answer during the quiz.

To Prepare

  • Complete the ungraded intercultural sensitivity quiz located in this week’s Learning Resources. Please do not prepare for the quiz ahead of time or search the Internet for the correct answer during the quiz.
  • Review your quiz results. As you do so, reflect on what surprised you about your results, what questions you got incorrect but assumed you knew, and what you learned about your own cultural sensitivity from completing the quiz.
  • Review the Learning Resources on cultural humility. Think about how you will use what you learned about your own cultural sensitivity to develop cultural humility.

By Day 7

Write a 2-page reflection paper that addresses the following:

  • Briefly summarize your results from the intercultural sensitivity quiz.
  • What surprised you about your results? Were there questions that you got incorrect but assumed you knew the correct answers?
  • What did you learn about your own cultural sensitivity as a result of completing the quiz?
  • How will you use what you learned about your cultural sensitivity to develop cultural humility?

efore implementing evidence-based practice, it is important to know what the community is like where the practice change will occur. A community needs assessment for availability of resources may well support the evidence-based practice change at the hospital level. For example, my capstone change proposal is on why there is such a delay in hospital discharges. If there is no availability in long term care facilities or a lack of home health care services within the community, this could play a role in the delays in discharge. Anecdotally, case management where I work, experiences longer wait times for insurance companies to approve planned discharge placements.

At the local level, it is through transformational leadership, collaboration and shared vision with the hospital and community stakeholders that evidence-based practice can be successfully instituted (Warren, et al., 2016). The culture of the local hospital or organization must be considered since the change in practice will need to be implemented by a supportive staff. Transformational leadership plays a key role in implementing new practice. The work environment where the evidence-based practice proposal is to occur must be considered beforehand. Afterall, if it is not supported at the local level, it is doubtful that it would be successful (Warren, et al., 2016).

In a systematic review study, the conclusion was that most nurses are simply not familiar with evidence-based practice, let alone how to implement it (Valizadeh, et al., 2020). According to Valizadeh, et al., (2020), healthcare managers, policy makers, and nursing professors must guide nurses to implement evidence-based practice, make new protocols and break through the “It’s always been done this way” mentality.

Understanding the health care system at the local level important to consider when planning an EBP implementation because it gives you an indication of what you can expect as far as demographics and availability of resources. According to my course mentor, when any evidence-based implementation has taken place at her facility, such as the change from paper charting to electronic medical records (EMR) was an arduous endeavor that required much planning and implementation. To promote use of research evidence in clinical and administrative health care decision making, multifaceted implementation strategies are needed (Moloney, Taylor & Ralph, 2016). Implementation strategies also need to address both the individual practitioner and organizational perspective. In addition to a shared vision, effective leadership is needed for change to be successful.

The key to transformational change or any change is to have leadership that is able to understand it, support it, explain it, and move the organization to commit to it (Cowell, Gillespie, Cheung & Brown, 2018). Although full schedules, distracting events, fear of change, and apathy are obstacles to change, the real enemy of change is complacency and having the will to change is vital Even groups that seek change may be complacent and not committed to follow through.

Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 6: Finalizing the Plan

At some point in every construction project, efforts turn from design, and the focus moves to actual construction. With the vision in place and the tools secured, the blueprint can be finalized and approved. Then it is time to put on hard hats and begin work.

Throughout the course, you have developed aspects of your Academic and Professional Development Plan. You have thought a great deal about your vision and goals, your academic and professional network of support, research strategies and other tools you will need, the integrity of your work, and the value of consulting the work of others. With your portfolio in place, it is now time to finalize your blueprint for success.

Much as builders remain cognizant of the building standards as they plan and begin construction, nurses must remain mindful of the formal standards of practice that govern their specialties. A good understanding of these standards can help ensure that your success plan includes any steps necessary to excel within your chosen specialty.

In this Assignment, you will continue developing your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan by developing the final component–a review of your specialty standards of practice. You will also submit your final version of the document, including Parts 1–5.

To Prepare:

  • Review the scope and standards of practice or competencies related to your chosen specialty in the resources for this module.
  • Review the MSN specializations offered at the school website by viewing the module resource, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • Examine professional organizations related to the specialization you have chosen and identify at least one to focus on for this Assignment.
  • Reflect on the thoughts you shared in the Discussion forum regarding your choice of a specialty, any challenges you have encountered in making this choice, and any feedback you have received from colleagues in the Discussion.

The Assignment:

Complete the following items and incorporate them into the final version of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.

  • With the resources specific to your MSN specialization (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) and other Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) specializations shared in this module, write a paragraph or make a Nursing Specialty Comparison table, comparing at least two nursing specialties that include your selected specialization and second-preferred specialization.
  • Write a 2- to 3-paragraph justification statement identifying your reasons for choosing your MSN specialization. Incorporate feedback you received from colleagues in this Module’s Discussion forum.

Identify the professional organization related to your chosen specialization for this Assignment and explain how you can become an active member of this organization.

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

  • Textbook: Chapter 16
  • Lesson
  • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to the textbook)

Introduction
Facione & Gittens (2016) state, “Strong critical thinking about complex and difficult social policies demands that we respect those with whom we disagree” (p. 344). The authors of your text ask us to take seriously the points of view of those with whom we disagree.

  • Should I respect the point of view of a misogynist – a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women?
  • Should I respect the point of view of a racist?
  • How about someone who believes marriage is only between one man and one woman?
  • How about someone who does not believe that humans are contributing to the conditions that cause climate change?
  • How about someone who denies that the Holocaust occurred?

Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post, pick one point of view from the five questions above that you find particularly repugnant – one that you think is completely unjustifiable. If you were in conversation with such a person, how could you ethically respond to the statement of such a point of view? Keep in mind that you are expressing a value opinion, which requires ideological reasoning, so you may want to review Chapter 13.

As you form your response, keep in mind the following; these are things you need to think about but not necessarily to write about in your initial post:

  • Reflect if you are using System-1 or System-2 thinking? Are your responses tinged with cognitive bias?
  • Do you think there is a qualitative difference between believing some races are inferior and the belief that marriage should only be between one man and one woman?
  • Do you think there is a qualitative difference between not believing in human contribution to climate change and not believing in the Holocaust?

Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.

Writing Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside source)
  • APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Paper 5

Length: Your final paper should be approximately 1500-2000 words, typed and double spaced. Avoid spelling and grammatical errors.

Topic I choose: probability in weather forecast(prediction)

Content: Your final paper can be on a totally new subject or you can choose to expand on a topic you have already written about. Either way, you should start fresh—do not simply add 3 new pages onto an existing paper. You may, however, reuse sources or interesting mathematical examples.

Your final paper should touch on at least one of the topics we discussed as a class—symmetry, approximation, probability or fairness. I will interpret all of these categories very broadly. You can combine any subset of these topics as well!

Your final paper should include 3 of the 4 following components:

1. A working definition of the mathematical topic you are exploring.

2. A personal connection to the topic.

3. Outside sources (I highly recommend you include this component in your paper).

4. A concrete mathematical example of the topic you are exploring.

Make sure your topic is focused and specific. Avoid making generic declamations like “Symmetry is everywhere” or “Math is important”. If you make a statement, back it up with evidence or outside sources. Avoid a paper that is a laundry list of examples (e.g. A paper that simply lists symmetric objects is not very interesting or deep.)

You may assume some mathematical maturity from your audience, but the ideas should be clearly articulated. Imagine you are handing your final paper to a classmate in this class. Even if they are not an expert in the subject matter, they should be able to read and understand your essay.

Hints for previous paper:  the organization of your paper difficult to follow. You were also missing a concrete mathematical example. (weather probability paper)

For the final paper, avoid a paper that functions like a list. Try to pick a specific topic to really focus on.

Student system

As a student at Marymount University, choose one of system that you frequently use out of those listed below.  Identify some problems that you are unhappy about with that system. These are the suggested systems

  1. Marynet student for class registration
  2. Marynet system for Tuition bill management and payment
  3. MU Alerts management system for students, faculty and staff
  4. MU Online meal plans management system for students
  5. MU Ballston Center Printing Stations for students’ mobile devices
  6. Seek my approval if there is another system that you prefer to work on for this project

Required:

  1. Prepare a problem statement describing the problem, which selected system will address
  2. Identify functional and non-functional requirements that will be used to solve that problem.
  3. Use the input-process-output approach to analyze the requirements in 2 above.

Below is the rubric on how the report will be graded

Draft of your Individual Report Options

Individual Report (My topic is “how to maintain the audience’s attention and interest throughput a presentation”)

For this assignment, you’ll write a minimum 600-word, single spaced, informal informational report in a memo format, addressed to your immediate supervisor, and outlining your recommendations to address an oral communication issue that your organization is experiencing. Your topic for this report will be the same topic as you’ve selected for the Individual Informative Presentation (above) – that is, related to the topic of public speaking and oral communications. If you have any questions, please see me to discuss your approach prior to beginning your project.

Approach

Approach your report from the perspective of an employee who is making a set of recommendations to your boss as to how to best address the relevant communication issue. You may assume that your boss has asked you to do this research and make these recommendations. As you will be addressing this report to your supervisor, you need to be conscious of your word choice

and tone to ensure that it is both professional and respectful. See “Persuading the Boss: Messages Flowing Upward” in Chapter 8, pages 226-227 of the text for guidelines in communicating with your boss. It will be to your benefit to include a relevant table, chart, graph, etc., where appropriate (with appropriate citations, of course). Deduct 1 for no graphic, deduct 2 if not labeling.

Research

Once you’ve selected your topic, you’ll need to research reputable sources to learn the best practices for addressing your organization’s communication problem. You may use our (Guffey) text as one of your sources, but please include at least one additional reference. Remember to avoid carefully avoid plagiarism when conducting research and provide citations (using APA format) wherever appropriate.

Deliverables

1) Problem Statement and Statement of Purpose. On Date in Table, you’ll submit a ProblemStatement and Statement of Purpose (explanations and examples on pages 259-261 in the text or in section “Determine the Problem and Purpose,” Chapter 9) in Blackboard Discussions.

2) Draft. Before submitting your final report, you’ll first develop a draft which will be shared with yourpeers for feedback. As noted above, this will be a minimum 600-word, single-spaced, informal

informational report in a memo format (refer to Chapter 9, Informal Reports). The business writing best practices described in chapter nine and throughout the textbook should be employed in crafting a clear, concise and impactful document.

Business Entrepreneurship

Individual written Business Plan or Proposal
You are required to produce a business plan/business proposal for a new busines start-up idea of your choice.
You will be provided with examples of formats that you may select to present your work.
All answers must be: Between 1,400 and 1,650 words long.
Supported with relevant literature using the Harvard Referencing system. This requires citations (references to relevant literature) within the answer itself, which must also be listed in full in a reference list at the end of your work. Work will not be awarded a pass grade at this level of study without a clear demonstration of this skill.

My Business idea is a copy of business from Serbia called Fit Pass, which will be needed for research and citation on this assignment. My business idea is called S Pass (Strong Pass) and its goal is to connect all the gyms in the Barcelona. Long term goal of my company is to target gyms all around Spain and allow people to pay monthly membership for the same price as one month in one gym, except they can switch gyms whenever they want. My work will also need a customer survey which I have written but I need you to extend it and turn into computer graphs, etc. to present my results in the business plan.

I will attach a mind map where you have a lot of the ideas and plans of the business(just in the assignment call the business Strong Pass (S Pass) instead of B Pass. You also have attachment of customer survey.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the assignment requirements.
