Aligning Stockholder and Management Interests/TVM/Markets

Part 1: Stockholders and Management Interests

Stockholders and managers want the same thing, don’t they? Theoretically, yes, but in reality, it does not always work that way. Too often, managers’ personal goals compete with shareholder wealth maximization. Sometimes, managers pay themselves excessive salaries or bonuses that are at odds with the idea of shareholder wealth maximization. How many times have you seen in the news examples of CEO excesses or outlandish spending on events or things that definitely do not help the overall goal of stockholder wealth maximization?

To prepare for this Discussion, think about a time in your professional experience when a decision was made that seemed to benefit a specific manager or small group of managers and not the overall corporation. If you do not have professional experience directly related to this topic, research a situation in the news where this theme is demonstrated. Consider the outcomes of such an imbalance between manager and stockholder interests and research on how to avoid such a situation.

Describe the situation from either your professional experience or your research.

Explain two or more motivational tools that can aid in aligning stockholder and management interests.

Explain how your selected tools are effective in resolving potential conflicts among managers and stockholders.

Support your discussion with appropriate academically reviewed articles. Use APA format throughout.

Part 2: Application of Concepts/Time Value of Money

Review the video links below. Based on the materials presented in these videos, discuss how you will use the time value of money concepts in managerial decision making. Be specific and give examples based on your experience or research.

Module 12 Discussion: Communications Measurement & Evaluation

Communication measurement and evaluation has come a long way in just a decade.  Finally, measurement has become the watchword and “results, results, results” the mantra of executives. Instead of viewing an organization’s communication as a kind of mystical intangible — intangible methods, intangible effects and intangible results — we now measure everything in our effort to build strong relationships with key publics and contribute to our organization’s success. This crucial step has finally made us strategic.

  • Read Chapter 12 in its entirety before you start your discussion post assignment.
  • Re-examine the research methodologies identified in Chapter 3.
  • Determine and discuss how each of the Primary Research areas covered on pages 55-59 in your textbook can be converted to an evaluation tool and would work best for Comcast
  • Discuss each of the following five areas:
    • Focus Groups (discuss this area in a minimum of a paragraph)
    • Copy and Product Testing (discuss this area in a minimum of a paragraph)
    • Psychographic Studies (discuss this area in a minimum of a paragraph)
    • Social Media Analytics (discuss this area in a minimum of a paragraph)
    • Survey Research and Opinion Sampling (discuss this area in a minimum of a paragraph)
  • I AM LOOKING FOR SPECIFICS! DO NOT GIVE ME A GENERAL OVERVIEW OF WHAT EACH AREA CAN DO, RATHER SPECIFICALLY DETAIL HOW EACH OF THESE FIVE AREAS WILL BE USED TO BEST SUIT Comcast

A Career in Psychology

Write a 7–-page white paper that examines how academic work helps professional success, analyzes the requirements for psychology professionals, and develops an action plan to achieve professional goals.

A white paper originally referred to a government report and meant that the paper was authoritative and informative. White papers today have taken on a broader meaning and are used when a writer wants to make an argument for a specific position or propose a solution to a problem. Typically, the audience for a white paper is the general public seeking a solution to their problems or answers to their questions.

Directions:

Within your white paper, include the following:

  • Explain how enrolling in a master’s degree in psychology program will help you succeed professionally.
    • How will this program prepare you to help others in the area of psychology you plan to go into?
    • How do the expectations of you as a practitioner-scholar help prepare you for professional success?
    • What role will research play in your career, and what type of research do you want to do?
    • What insights did you gain from the research you conducted for Assessment 3?
  • Analyze the requirements for a psychology professional.
    • Describe the skills and competencies needed to be successful in the field of psychology.
    • Explain the laws and policies that guide the practice of psychology.
    • Explain the ethical conduct expected of a psychology professional.
    • Outline the process to become a psychology professional, such as credentialing, certification, licensure, and so on.
  • Compare the requirements to become a psychology professional with the skills and knowledge you already possess.
    • Where are the greatest gaps in knowledge?
    • What areas of concern do you have (if any)?
  • Develop an action plan to achieve your professional goals. (Please focus on the major milestones and do not get lost in the enormous number of smaller steps that you might take.)
    • In addition to completing your Capella program, will you also participate in any additional training or volunteer opportunities?
    • Will you create opportunities in your current position that will help you build skill and knowledge?
    • What professional groups and organizations might you join to help with networking or informational interviews?
    • How will you stay current with the research and literature in the field? What resources will you use to help develop the competencies needed to be successful both professionally and academically?

Be sure you adhere to APA guidelines for style and formatting, and reference at least five resources that may include both scholarly literature and professional sources.

Additional Requirements

  • Format: Include a title, page, abstract page, and reference page.
  • Length: 7–9 pages, double-spaced.
  • References: At least five current scholarly or professional resources.
  • APA formatting: References and citations should be formatted according to current APA style and formatting standards.
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 points.

AccountingMethodsForLeaders_Assessment1

Develop either a training deck (12-15 slides) or training manual (3-4 pages) to ensure new hires have a solid understanding of income statements, balance sheets, and the elements that go into them.

Introduction

This portfolio work project will help you to not only better understand commonly used accounting tools, but it will also give you the opportunity to use your skills and experience by preparing training materials to train someone else.

Scenario

You work for an organization that is seeking growth and recently has hired new district managers to assist in this growth. In talking to other regional managers, you have heard that some district managers do not have a thorough understanding of commonly used accounting tools including an income statement and balance sheet. You have a new district manager hire, John, and see the need to do some training with him so he has a solid understanding of income statements, balance sheets, and the elements that go into them, including advertising costs, Web development costs, and store opening costs.

In preparing to train your new hire, you have determined that the use of examples (a picture is worth a thousand words) can be a great approach to use. So you have decided to gather some examples from the company’s summary of significant accounting policies from its latest financial statements.

You may apply this scenario to either Option 1 or Option 2, described in Requirements below.

Your Role

You are a regional manager for Urban Outfitters or your selected organization and oversee a number of districts. You have recently brought a new district manager on board and want to ensure he has the knowledge and tools needed to effectively do his job.

Requirements

Option 1:

The organization you work for is Urban Outfitters. Use the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission website to find the Urban Outfitter’s 2016–2017 financial statement’s summary of significant accounting policies. Look at the data for 2015, 2016, and 2017 for the following examples of essential elements you need to cover with John and ensure his understanding.

  • Advertising. Examine the criteria used to expense and capitalize advertising costs and where these costs appear in the financial statement.
  • Store opening costs. Examine how store opening and organization costs were handled and where these costs appear in the financial statement.
  • Website development costs. Examine the approaches taken during the application and infrastructure development stage and the planning and operating stage.
Option 2:

Use a firm or scenario of your choosing.

Before choosing a company, read the assessment thoroughly to ensure:

  • The company fits the assessment requirements.
  • You have access to the financial statement’s summary of significant accounting policies and the Note disclosures from which you are drawing your materials. Include this information in the appendix for reference.
  • You can distribute the data without disclosing confidential company information.
Training Materials

As you prepare your training materials for John, use the examples you collected from the company’s Notes to financial documents to illustrate how you address the following items:

  • Explain how one or more of the following costs are captured:
    • Advertising.
    • Store opening. If store opening costs were capitalized, over what time period would you amortize them? Explain why you selected this time period.
    • Website development.
  • Analyze the importance of Notes to financial statements in interpreting financial statements.
  • Explain how the accounting method the company uses affects the financial statements.
  • Explain how the financial statements would differ if another method were used to capture the costs.
  • If you have a preference for capitalizing or expensing these costs, explain why it is your preference.

Deliverable Format

Leadership has asked that you develop either a training deck or a training manual that you will use with John and that can be deployed with other new hires as well. Regardless of the format selected, the information should address the points identified above and with detailed explanations within the notes areas of slides or within the training manual text. It will also be helpful to include information in regard to why each item is important to the organization as well as the success of the new district manager.

To use your time and John’s time wisely, be conscientious about providing thorough yet concise information. These materials are expected to be used by others for future training needs, so make sure they are well organized and clear.

Training materials requirements:
  • 12–15 slides for a training deck. Include additional details as slide notes.
  • 3–4 pages for a training manual.
Related company standards for either format:
  • The training manual is a professional document and should therefore follow the corresponding MBA Academic and Professional Document Guidelines, including single-spaced paragraphs.
    • To learn more about creating presentations, click “MBA Program Resources” and then “Presentation Skills.”
  • In addition to the training deck or manual materials, include:
    • Title (slide or page).
    • References (slide or page).
    • Appendix with supporting materials. If you are using a firm or scenario of your choosing, ensure faculty has sufficient information to understand how you reached your recommendation.
  • At least two APA-formatted references.

Evaluation

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies through corresponding scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Explain how accounting concepts and practices impact financial reporting.
    • Explain how the accounting method the company used affects the financial statements.
    • Compare how two accounting methods differ in their effects on the financial statements.
  • Competency 4: Communicate financial information with multiple stakeholders.
    • Communicate accounting information clearly.

Assignment: Scholar Practitioner Project: Unhealthy Family Roles in Addiction Recovery

Assignment: Scholar Practitioner Project: Unhealthy Family Roles in Addiction Recovery

One of the most common ways that families attempt to maintain balance is by ignoring the addiction problem. Families attempt to keep a false sense of normalcy by following three rules: no talking, no feeling, and no trusting. Members learn to shield themselves from hurt by learning not to feel, and because their trust in the addicted parent or spouse has been violated one too many times, they learn not to trust.

Children growing up in these unstable families often adapt by taking on unhealthy roles. These roles each have distinct traits and are taken on for one reason only—to survive the dysfunctional family dynamics. These roles do nothing to help the child, the addicted parent, or other family members. If the situation does not change, these children may carry these roles into their adult lives and perpetuate similar addiction-related problems in their own families.

For this Assignment, you examine unhealthy family roles. You explore how these roles might impact addiction recovery.

Assignment:

In a 2- to 3-page APA-formatted paper, address the following:

  • Describe any unhealthy family roles exhibited by Marge’s husband in the media.
  • Explain what roles her children have assumed when dealing with Marge’s addiction.
  • Select one of these unhealthy family roles.
  • Explain how this role could impact Marge and her family.
  • As an addictions professional, explain how you might address this unhealthy family role. Provide two resources that would be useful.

Essay APA Format

Your argumentative essay will be on an environmental topic from the list of options below. Consider your audience for this paper to be your peers. The essay should be between 3 ½ and 4 pages (850 to 1,000 words) in length, not including the cover page, abstract, or reference page. In this paper, you will be demonstrating your ability to synthesize information from different into a coherent argument that is properly documented. Your paper should be double spaced in Times New Roman 12 point font and must include:

  • An introduction, a minimum of 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion
  • a clearly articulated thesis that states the claim, position, or stance that your essay will prove in the introduction to your paper
  • 4 cited sources, at least 2 of these sources should come from the MDC databases
  • At least 4 quotes from your sources
  • Topic sentences that focus the discussion in the body paragraphs

Sustainability Action Assignment

This assignment asks students to experience and learn something new by taking action that promotes sustainability in the community, to situate this new knowledge in the frameworks of sustainability that are being learned in class, and to create an output in the format of students’ own choosing that functions as public outreach. This assignment therefore fits into the key learning objectives of the course around self-reflection and application of course learnings to experiences of sustainability.

Assignment background: A key part of sustainability is community engagement and taking action that contributes to sustainability. While learning about the background, history, and theoretical frameworks of sustainability is important, engagement outside of the classroom is also essential. This assignment also stems from responding to student feedback that they wanted an opportunity to engage in activities as part of the course. This assignment therefore combines a focus on student experience with concrete sustainable action. This assignment will also provide some scaffolding for your personal sustainability assignment. Assignment description: Students must attend or participate in an event, activity, club, etc., relating to sustainability. They may focus on any of the four pillars of sustainability that they are interested in: environmental, social, cultural, or economic. Students then must summarize their experience and relate it to themes of the course in a form that is made for public distribution. The student outputs will then be posted on a public SUST 201 website.

Example activities: Some examples of activities that students may attend or participate in include: speaking to the owner of a local food or other business, volunteering with a food bank or other sustainability-focused organization, trying to make sustainable life changes for a period of time (for example, only biking or walking for a week), use a habit tracking app for a month, participating in an Office of Sustainability event, helping start a community garden, spending an afternoon in a crafting session at kihêw waciston, attending an Edmonton Public Library program, attending a sustainability-related film festival, visiting an art show, picking up trash in the River Valley, or more. Important to note: these are just suggestions, and we encourage students to choose their own activity in terms of whatever interests them about sustainability. Volunteering that students already do may also be considered for the assignment. Outputs and Submission: Once students have completed their activity, students must summarize the activity and discuss how it relates to sustainability as outlined in class. The resulting output should take a form that the student feels best communicates their experience and thoughts in a way that is easy for the public to understand. For example, this could be a blog post, an infographic, an Instagram account, a photovoice, video project, or other.
