REQUIREMENTS: 

Required topic headings for your paper should include the background surrounding the issue, a historical perspective, current issues that are applicable, legislation dealing with this topic, examples, global dynamics/impact (such as issues, processes, trends, and systems), personal impact from a global perspective, and a summary. These are the topics to be discussed in the term paper

Each paper should contain a reference list of at least five (5) different substantial and quality references. The references and reference citations for the term paper must be to a current event less than 3 years old (a reference with no date (n.d.) is not acceptable). This requires a reference citation in the text of the paper and a reference at the end of the paper to which the reference citation applies.  You must include some information obtained from the reference in your answer. The references must be found on the internet and you must include a URL in your reference so that the reference can be verified.

You cannot use information from the text book or any book/article by the author of the text book as a current event. Make sure that your reference has a date of publication.

The body of the paper should be a minimum of six typed double spaced pages. Your cover page and reference page cannot be counted in this number. You should use the APA format for your reference citations and the reference page.

Writing Assignment: Genre

Write a 500 word essay practicing one of the genres we explored in this week’s lecture. Use one of the writing prompts below to develop your writing assignment. Follow the guidelines in the Explore learning module in developing your essay.
Memoir
1. What is one moment where you were afraid to do something but did it anyway?
2. Make a list of every area of expertise you have, e.g. writing, playing an instrument, etc. Then choose one of those areas of expertise and write for about what you’ve learned.
3. Describe the situation and how you felt the first time you saw the love of your life.

Review
Write a review of a recent book you’ve read, movie you’ve seen, concert you’ve attended/album you’ve listened to, or product you’ve purchased.
Commentary
Write a commentary in response to any current event that you’ve seen in the media recently. Remember commentaries offer a new angle to an ongoing public conversation. The goal of commentaries is to convince readers that the opinion of the person writing the commentary is more convincing. When writing a commentary, it is important to make clear points that are understood easily by readers. At the same time, readers of commentaries want to learn something new while figuring out how someone else views an issue or event of interest.

Protecting human research participants is of utmost importance. Even though your change project will not be implemented in the field and you will not be engaging with human subjects in this context, it is still critical that all healthcare professionals have a solid foundation in patient rights and protections within the realm of research.

It is essential that all healthcare professionals, whether or not they are currently involved in research studies, remain aware of regulatory policies and updates such as the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects, or Common Rule, that will take effect January 2019.

Assignment Instructions:

1. Reflect on what you learned from the NIH materials about protecting the rights of human research participants.

Discuss  the following in your paper:

2. Describe the circumstances that influenced the need for a policy to protect human research subjects. Give examples of specific ways human research subjects can be harmed by researchers.

3. Identify three vulnerable populations and the special restrictions associated with human research among these groups. Evaluate the requirements and restrictions. Do you think they are adequate? Why or why not?

4. The Belmont Report summarizes the ethical principles and guidelines for research involving human subjects. Three core principles are identified: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. Even though these principles are considered equal, prioritize them in order of importance to you. Explain your decisions.

Part 2: Ethical

1. Describe an organizational environment that would facilitate the ethical practice of nurses caring for chronically ill patients.  

As you read about patient rights

2. Describe one patient right that is often not fully implemented in the patient care environment. 

3. Identify specific strategies to help ensure that this right is supported within the patient care environment. 

4. Explain how the registered nurse can assist in protecting patient rights.

1. Discuss the elements of informed consent and provide a clinical example about what can happen when some elements are not adhered to.

Choose a patient-care situation in which the RN should intervene and advocate for the patient.  

An example of such a situation might be when a patient has not been given complete informed consent.

Include the following in your paper:

1. Describe the clinical situation concisely and descriptively. It can be an actual situation or a hypothetical one.

2. Apply the Bioethical Decision Making Model to the specific clinical ethical situation that you choose. Address each section of the model in your paper.

3. Conclude with a discussion of nursing advocacy in the clinical setting and the nurse’s role as a patient advocate.

Your responses to each part will be evaluated based on your ability to synthesize the concepts of process improvement and quality, and the information in the case study.

• Identify and describe three to five opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction in the Piney Woods Emergency Department.
• Quantify the size of the three to five opportunities and describe the impact they have on the emergency department and on quality.

Stretch Goals (minimum of 2 slides including the chart/table slide)

• Recommend three to five measurable stretch goals, one for each of the opportunities you identified at Piney Woods. The goals should be designed to improve process and quality, and to reduce risk, waste, and cost.
  • Create a table or chart to be included within your presentation that captures the following information:
    • The three to five stretch goals. Use the presenter notes area to explain and cite relevant research that underpins your recommendations.
    • How the goals will improve processes and lower costs for the Piney Woods emergency department.
    • How progress and achievement of each stretch goal will be measured.

• Analyze the continuum of care across the Piney Woods Hospital organization and provide recommendations to eliminate redundancy and decrease quality risk.

a) This is a first wrap-up question reflecting on the entire course.  What is your single, most-important take away from any of the cases we have used this semester in 75-100 words?  Let me illustrate what I am looking for.  Consider the Reed Supermarkets case.  The case starts off with the first-hand observations made by Meredith Collins, VP of Marketing for Reed Supermarkets, about the foot traffic at Reed and some rivals’ stores.  Based on this you could say: “I learnt that executives “manage” not only by conducting meetings and going through written reports but also by walking around.  I also found it interesting that Meredith visited rival stores.”  I am looking for something that created a unique insight for you.  There is no right or wrong answer here.  But be sure to elaborate the case context and your learning appropriately to make it a stand-alone reading.
