psychology and advertisement

Being a critical consumer of messages is more important than ever in the increasingly mediated society that we live in. This means being able to analyze all messages for purpose, audience, intended message, and effectiveness. The skills learned from analyzing media messages can also be used in analyzing all messages – whether the messages are from the mass media, computer mediated communication (CMC), coworkers, our children, other family members, friends, or other sources. Therefore, you will need to analyze messages for purpose, audience and intended message.

First, view five advertisements (commercials). Any medium is acceptable; i.e. television, the Internet, etcetera. Your five advertisements should be relatively new (from the last 6 months) and from different products or services.

Then, analyze each of the advertisements and explain your thoughts on the following questions. Provide specific examples and information from the class material to support your analysis.

Use the Unit 10 Assignment template to explain each of the five advertisements. Include these elements per advertisement:

  • What is the product/ service of the advertisement?
  • Where did you see the advertisement? Medium, time, day and other information (TV or Internet site, etc.) Note: If from an Internet site – needs to be an ad with both visual and audio elements (not just a written ad).
  • Who do you think is the intended audience?
  • Does the advertisement seem to adhere to basic ethical standards of persuasion in terms of forthrightness, completeness and honesty? Or does it use manipulation? In general, is the advertisement ethical or not. Explain with specific examples.
  • Do the visual message and the nonverbal codes match the verbal message? Explain why or why not with specific examples from the advertisement.
  • What is the goal of the advertisement? Is it successful? Explain with specific examples from the advertisement.
  • What are the strengths of the advertisement?
  • What are the weaknesses of the advertisement?
  • Identify and explain any faulty reasoning with the messaging in the advertisement.
  • Explain the role media has had in shaping our culture and society.
  • Explain the importance of being a critical receiver of mass media messaging.

Part 1:

  • Read p. 149-151 “My Father’s House” and create a response to this narrative.  In your response, you might consider the following:  What areas stood out to you and why? What questions do you have and how would you
answer them? Did the reading remind you of anything else you’ve read, seen, or

really resonated with you, either positively or negatively? Does this remind you of
    anything we’ve discussed in class?

    • What did you not understand? Were there any unfamiliar words or references? What things do you hope will be explained further as you read more or hear more in class? Are you wondering what reactions your classmates have to anything in the reading?
    • Would you argue with the author on any points? Can you imagine others who would? Do you think the author is ignoring anything vital or misrepresenting reality in any way? Does this seem to be a conscious or unconscious choice?

Human Resources Management Methods

Read the following article from Unit II’s Required Reading

(located in the Unit II Study Guide):

 Lytle, T. (2015). Confronting conflict. HR Magazine, 60(6), 26-31. Retrieved from https://libraryresources.columbiasouthern.edu/loginurl=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=bth&AN=103708484&site=ehost-live&scope=site

After reading the article, analyze the scenarios provided below, and choose one to discuss in your case study paper. In your case study, be sure to address the following items:

  •  Begin the discussion by identifying which of the scenarios you chose.
  •  Include a brief statement that identifies your style of conflict management.
  • Use the information provided in this unit to develop a process to resolve the conflict.
  • Describe how you would handle the workplace investigation for the chosen scenario.

As a result of a merger, the organization decided to decentralize its human resource management (HRM) functions and create area human resource (HR) generalists across the United States. One of their responsibilities is to handle all employee relations issues. You report directly to the senior vice president of HRMin the corporate headquarters in New York, and there is a dotted line reporting relationship to the vice president of field operations in your area, which is located in the Midwest. You just arrived at your new location for this position about six days ago.

Armed with the information you have learned in Units I and II and aided by your own experience and ability to research, please read the scenarios below, and select one for this assignment. Please answer the questions, and follow the guidelines presented.

Your senior vice president (SVP) of HRM has received a complaint from two branch managers in your geographic area. They are separate but similar complaints concerning Robert, the SVP of Area Operations. Both managers say Robert touches them and other women in the office inappropriately by rubbing their shoulders; the managers also report that Robert makes remarks about their alluring attire and comments that he is in love with them for the great job they are doing. Knowing you are housed in the same area office with this SVP, your boss asks you if you can objectively investigate this complaint. You talk it over with your boss and knowhe will support your efforts, and you agree to do the investigation.

Almost as soon as you give your answer to your boss, you receive a phone call from the area SVP’s wife, who somehow already knows you will be interviewing her husband for a harassment complaint. She is irate and states that the charges are ridiculous. She becomes belligerent and begins to degrade the female managers.

Based on your knowledge of employment law, conflict management, and investigation procedures, what would be the best way to handle this situation? For example, what laws are involved? Where do you start? Who do you notify? When do you start? What do you tell the area SVP’s wife?

In this situation, you are the employee relations representative for the organization. What is your role in the investigative process? Describe the steps you take to investigate this employee complaint.

In your response to the scenario you have chosen, follow the guidelines below:

  •  Be sure to include academic sources to support your positions/conclusions. You are required to use at least two outside  sources beyond the required reading for this unit.
  •  Be sure that your analysis is highly relevant, thorough, and remains on topic.
  • Accuracy should be strong, with close attention to detail in all parts of the assignment.
  • Writing should be clear and concise with solid sentence structure and should be free of grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.
  • Your paper should be at least three pages in length.

All sources used must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations in APA format. Information about accessing the grading rubric for this assignment is provided below.

RP 1 Assignment Sheet

  1. Consider the following scenarios:
    1. A stranger saves a small child from drowning.
    2. A soldier risks their life to carry an injured civilian to a hospital.
    3. A medical doctor ensures that the cure they developed for a serious virus remains affordable to the general public.

I do not think it is controversial to suggest that these are examples of actions that are morally right, or morally praiseworthy. However, my question to you is, when you think about the morality (the rightness or wrongness) of an action, what do you think matters more—the intentions (the motives) of the person who is doing the action or the consequences (the results) of the action? Which of these two—the motives or the consequences—matters most when determining whether someone does the right thing? Why do you believe that? Give me 3 – 5 sentences here. Tell me what you think and why you think it. Don’t worry about being wrong. Just be honest.

  1. Got your answer? Alright. Good. Let’s have some fun. Consider the following thought experiment:

Suppose that construction at the Kendall Campus of Miami Dade College has allowed for an advanced railway that encircles the entirety of the school grounds.  As construction progresses, you are invited to take a personal tour of the railway, via a prototype of one of the small railcars.  You enter the car and begin the tour.  Unfortunately, as you are touring the campus, you notice that there are five workers on the tracks, making some last-minute adjustments.  You try to hit the brakes, but they have malfunctioned.  The railcar is heading towards the five workers.  Their backs are turned to you, and since they are working loudly, they do not hear the car’s approach.   If they are struck, they will surely die.  However, you also notice that there is a fork along the tracks.  If you pull a lever, the railcar will change its course.  Unfortunately, there is one worker along this alternate path.  Do you pull the lever to save the five workers, while sacrificing the one?  Why or why not? Give me about 5 sentences for your answer to this one, too. You can write more than 5 sentences, though. I won’t mind, and I won’t tell on you. Think about the relationship between this second question and your answer to the first question. Is your response to the first question informing how you respond to this one?

  1. Ready for the last question, suckers? Here it is. Wait. First, do me a quick favor. DON’T read this question BEFORE giving your full and honest answer to question 2. Got that? I have to trust you on this one, kiddos. If we had the luxury of being in a face-to-face class, I would be able to make sure that you got these questions one-at-a-time. But the world is burning, so what else can we do?

Alright. You ready? Here it is:Now suppose that, instead of riding in the car, you are walking along the tracks next to a large, muscular man.  You happen to notice that several yards ahead of you are five workers, loudly toiling at their labor.  Tragically, you also notice an unmanned railcar several yards behind you.  It is careening down the tracks, heading right towards these unlucky workers.  If they are struck, they will surely be killed.  However, you also correctly estimate the following: If this large, muscular man is pushed onto the tracks, his mass will manage to stop the railcar, saving the five hapless workers, but resulting in his untimely demise.  The element of surprise is on your side; you can push the muscular man onto the tracks.  But is this the right thing to do?  Why or why not?Don’t you just love how ruthless this last one is? It’s very Slytherin, is it not? Here’s a follow up question for you: Is your answer to this question different from your answer to the second question? Why do you think that is? Does it make it re-evaluate your response to the first question? I’m not asking this by accident. I’d genuinely like to see what you have to say to this final series of questions. Incorporate them into your response.

Explain the role of health education in health promotion. How is the nursing process used in developing health education?

 5 DQ 1

Health education is a role played by health care providers either in their line of duty or planned activity to educate an individual or community about a certain disease so that they take precautions to avoid its negative consequences (Arnold, 2018). Health education can thus be used as an effective tool for the eradication of diseases and health promotion.

Health education plays a role in promoting health as it is tailored for a specific target; thus, it provides information that deals with their problem directly. In providing this education, persons engaged in health education provide information that includes factors that lead to exposure to a certain disease, how to overcome or avoid infections, and actions to take in case of infection. They also offer tools to support behavior change.

The nursing process is a problem-solving process used by nurses to promote wellness. Nurses provide individualistic health education, which is an integral part of the nursing process as it helps them in the assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient’s health problems (Stone, 2017). The nurse, through the nursing problem, determines the educational needs of a patient and makes plans to meet those needs by providing health education to the patient.

Families may experience contemporary issues in their lives today. An example of such is when one family member is battling a disability or any chronic illness like hypertension. The family may then expect the needs of their patient to be met as part of efforts to promote their wellness and state of wellbeing. As part of a health education plan, nurses may take steps and undertake activities that help the patients overcome or manage their conditions. This can be achieved by educating the family about the condition and the self-care practices that they ought to adopt in managing their conditions.

Health education is, therefore, a critical tool in helping promote a state of healthiness and wellbeing and helping populations overcome their healthcare issues (Levin & Stillman-Lowe, 2019). It has given individuals and communities information on how to care for themselves and take charge of their health by avoiding infections or in managing already existing conditions.

Primary and Secondary Reinforcers

Primary and Secondary Reinforcers

We use reinforcement to increase appropriate behaviors. The effectiveness of reinforcement depends on an individual’s preference. While some items or activities are preferred for some individuals, they may be aversive for others. When using positive reinforcement, we must ensure that the reinforcers we are presenting actually function as reinforcers. Also, keep in mind that just because you may like or enjoy something, it does not mean you will respond to gain access. One may like doing puzzles, but one may not be willing to run five miles to gain access to a puzzle.

  • List five preferred items or activities that you enjoy.
  • Categorize these five items or activities into primary or secondary reinforcers.
  • Explain why each is an example of a primary reinforcer or a secondary reinforcer. What primary reinforcers are the secondary reinforcers likely paired with?
  • If any are secondary reinforcers, speculate how they may have come to be secondary reinforcers. What were the primary reinforcers with which they may have been paired?
