Research Strategy

Did you know that one department store chain has two forensics labs in the United States? One is in the western states and the other is located in the Northeast, and both locations process fingerprints and other forensics evidence. Did you know that one of the fast-food restaurant chains has a huge security department that is responsible for global security and an intelligence unit that tracks terrorism worldwide? Also, did you know that every professional sports team, most Fortune 500 companies, and amusement parks have security, quick response teams, and investigation teams?

In the selection of your topic for your final project, examine all possible areas of interest, both in the public and private sectors. Research topics of interest in which you would love to have a career.

Based on the feedback from your instructor and peers regarding your topic, finalize the thesis that you will pursue for your research. Now, you will develop a research plan that will include the following:

  • Thesis statement: This statement presents the problem or issue you intend to research, and it should be clear and concise.
  • Hypothesis: This is a statement of prediction regarding the results of the problem or issue. Briefly identify your working solution to the problem. How might your working solution solve the problem? Be sure to note that your working solution will evolve through continued research and analysis.
  • Measurement and analysis approach: Define the key points that you will research, and explain how you will gather and analyze the data you find. Intend to incorporate information related to technology and crime statistics that apply to your issue.
  • Applicable resources: Identify 5 sources that you have found that are the most relevant and best support your purpose statement. List the sources, and then record the main idea as notes to use as part of your research later. Identify case studies, library, Web, and other scholarly resources.
  • Ethical standards: What are ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure that your final report will be of the highest ethical standards?

week 6_ Smart Parking Space App PRESENTATION

Assignment Content

  1. Purpose
This assignment illustrates how data analytics can be used to create strategies for sustainable organizational success while integrating the organization’s mission with societal values. You’ll apply statistical time series modeling techniques to identify patterns and develop time-dependent demand models. You’ll practice organizing and delivering a presentation to senior decision-makers. The PowerPoint presentation includes an audio component in addition to speaker notes.

    Resources: Microsoft Excel®, DAT565_v3_Wk6_Data_File

Scenario: A city’s administration isn’t driven by the goal of maximizing revenues or profits but instead looks at improving the quality of life of its residents. Many American cities are confronted with high traffic and congestion. Finding parking spaces, whether in the street or a parking lot, can be time consuming and contribute to congestion. Some cities have rolled out data-driven parking space management to reduce congestion and make traffic more fluid.

You’re a data analyst working for a mid-size city that has anticipated significant increments in population and car traffic. The city is evaluating whether it makes sense to invest in infrastructure to count and report the number of parking spaces available at the different parking lots downtown. This data would be collected and processed in real-time, feeding an app that motorists can access to find parking space availability in different parking lots throughout the city.

Instructions: Work with the provided Excel database. This database has the following columns:

    • LotCode: A unique code that identifies the parking lot
    • LotCapacity: A number with the respective parking lot capacity
    • LotOccupancy: A number with the current number of cars in the parking lot
    • TimeStamp: A day/time combination indicating the moment when occupancy was measured
    • Day: The day of the week corresponding to the TimeStamp
    • Insert a new column, OccupancyRate, recording occupancy rate as a percentage with one decimal. For instance, if the current LotOccupancy is 61 and LotCapacity is 577, then the OccupancyRate would be reported as 10.6 (or 10.6%).
    • Using the OccupancyRate and Day columns, construct box plots for each day of the week. You can use Insert > Insert Statistic Chart >Box and Whisker for this purpose. Is the median occupancy rate approximately the same throughout the week? If not, which days have lower median occupancy rates? Which days have higher median occupancy rates? Is this what you expected?
    • Using the OccupancyRate and LotCode columns, construct box plots for each parking lot. You can use Insert > Insert Statistic Chart >Box and Whisker for this purpose. Do all parking lots experience approximately equal occupancy rates? Are some parking lots more frequented than others? Is this what you expected?
    • Select any 2 parking lots. For each one, prepare as scatter plot showing occupancy rate against TimeStamp for the week 11/20/2016 –11/26/2016. Are occupancy rates time dependent? If so, which times seem to experience highest occupancy rates? Is this what you expected?
    • Presentation:
Create a 10- to 12-slide presentation with speaker notes and audio. Your audience is the City Council members who are responsible for deciding whether the city invests in resources to set in motion the smart parking space app.

Complete the following in your presentation:

    • Outline the rationale and goals of the project.
    • Utilize boxplots showing the occupancy rates for each day of the week. Include your interpretation of results.
    • Utilize box plots showing the occupancy rates for each parking lot. Include your interpretation of results.
    • Provide scatter plots showing occupancy rate against time of day of your selected four parking lots. Include your interpretation of results.
    • Make a recommendation about continuing with the implementation of this project.
    • Submit your assignment.

Assignment 3: Legal Liability and the Gig Economy

Ride sharing companies are largely hailed as the advent of the gig economy, which is the idea that people do not work as permanent employees for one employer but instead work in a labor market characterized by short-term contracts or freelance work. While creating a new type of entrepreneurship for individuals, a gig economy raises a host of new legal questions about the law of agency for companies utilizing gig workers.

Widgets operates a ride-sharing business in a small town.  Your boss at an investment firm has asked you to evaluate Widget’s legal exposure for the conduct of its drivers, given the information below and identify, and to explain the law and legal liability in this vast new gig economy world.

Write a 3–4 page interoffice memo in which you do the following:

  1. Summarize the main principles of agency law as they relate to Widgets’ relationship with its drivers.
  2. Analyze the circumstances under which Widgets might be liable for the conduct of a driver who, while intoxicated, caused an accident involving personal property damage and bodily injury.
  3. Identify the steps Widgets can take, if any, to limit its legal exposure due to the conduct of its drivers.

Include at least three quality references. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not count as quality references.

The Rhythm Study

Use the three representative, “play” objects from The Childhood Space Exercise. Record your exercise in an audio recording, post the recording and your essay in the “Discussions” link. Take time to investigate the objects with each of your senses. One of the objects has a deeper resonance’ than the others. Place the object down and sit erect and comfortably in a chair, close your eyes, and practice slow methodical breathing. Inhale on a four-count, pause for a four-count, exhale on four, and pause for four. Repeat the cycle until the mind becomes quiet. Now, follow the directions on the recorded audio guide. Begin the exercise by sitting quietly with eyes closed and only clap out the rhythms. Feel free to express any rhythms physically, they can be simple or as complex as a drum solo. After completing the exercise, remember the most powerful sense memory recollection and its accompanying emotion. What was the most distinct memory? Did you re-experience any sensation? What sense did you remember most vividly? What was the moment you re-experienced most vividly? What happened during that memory? How did you feel about that movement? Where did that memory feel strongest in your body? Write a 250-word essay on your experience and post it for class reaction. Be sure to talk about what you experienced while clapping out the rhythm of the personality.

“I am the drum, you are the drum, and we are the drum. Because the whole world revolves in rhythm, and rhythm is the soul of life, for everything that we do in life is in rhythm.” – Babatunde Olatunji

Checklist:

1: Post a minimum length 250-word essay describing your experience while clapping out the rhythm of the person you encounter during your sense-memory exercise.

2. Respond with a minimum 25-word post to the Discussion Topic in the Discussion Board for the exercise (1 pt.)

3. Comment on a classmates’ entry with a 25-word minimum length post in the Discussion Board for the exercise (.5 pt.)

MIS103 – Job Search Databases

Instructions

There are many job search websites that are freely available. The underlying structure of these websites is a database that organizes job listings or ads and allows users to search and browse the listings. Similar to reports in a database, most sites contain alert and notification features available to users, so that you can create an automated alert email when a new job that meets your specified criteria is posted.

Take some time to explore and compare the layout and features of at least two of these sites, or any other job search sites that you know of.

Then, answer the following questions in your journal entry:

  • How do you see the database concepts you have learned about in this module at play in the job search websites you explored?
  • How might your knowledge and experience with database structures allow you to better utilize these sites?
  • What job search site(s) do you think is most helpful for your career goals?
  • Which features or tools of these sites did you find useful, and why?

Submit a 300- to 500-word essay reflecting your thoughts on the questions asked above through the Assignment Dropbox by the end of Module 3 for Journal Entry 3. Please also use APA in-text citations and references for sources you used.

Group Project Paper

  1. Obtain the four-digit primary SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) Code and industry title for your company. Record the primary SIC code and industry title at the top of the Ratio Analysis Worksheet.
  2. Obtain industry averages for commonly used ratios in the current period. Industry average information is reported by industry title or SIC code.
  3. Look up the following industry-average ratios:
    1. Current ratio
    2. Debt ratio
    3. Gross profit margin
    4. Times interest earned
    5. Accounts receivable turnover
    6. Inventory turnover
    7. Return on Sales
    8. Asset Turnover
    9. Return on Assets
    10. Financial Leverage
    11. Return on Equity

Note that some industry averages may not apply to your company.
Alternative to Industry Averages:

If you are not able to find the industry average for part 3 of your project, please consider the following:

Unfortunately, some of the websites where you can find industry averages will require you to pay for them. Instead of using industry average, calculate the same ratios for one of the competitors to the company you used in your project. That will give you the comparative information you need for Part 3 of the project. I believe this will help.

  1. Write a 3-5 page report comparing the above ratios to industry averages. Discuss whether your company’s profitability, efficiency, liquidity, and solvency are better than, or worse than, its peers. The report should be well written with cover page, introduction, body of paper (with appropriate subheadings), conclusion, and reference page. References must be appropriately cited. Format: Double-spaced, one-inch margins, using a 12-point Times New Roman fon

deviant behavior

Each of your answers should be written using your own words. Do not copy and paste from your textbook or an Internet source. Simply copying from the book word-for-word does not show me that you understand the concepts. Ensure you cite your work and add reference(s) at the end of your journal. This assignment is designed to see if you are reading and understanding the material from your textbook and learning modules, so these should be the sources you are citing in your work. You should not need to do research from additional resources unless the question specifically asks you to do so; you should not be Googling the answers for these questions. Please review the APA module under the “Getting Started” area if you need assistance.  As a criminal justice professional, it is imperative that you learn the finer aspects of writing.  Citing and referencing are part of the gradable criteria for your weekly work. All questions are worth 20 points:

  1. Suicide is more of a sociological problem than a psychological problem. Create an argument agreeing or disagreeing with this statement.
  2. State and defend your position on pornography. Is pornography destructive to the family and society, socially useful material, or harmful to women? Why?
  3. Describe and discuss the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1993 definition of sexual harassment. What is that definition, and why does it represent an important change? Why do some people, especially conservative men, fear this new definition?
  4. Identify and describe the two traditional classifications of mental disorders. What are these types characterized by? Which is the most debilitating?
  5. Compare and contrast voluntary hospitalization and involuntary hospitalization for mental illness.

Instructions

Faster Computing was impressed with your presentation. The company is interested in moving forward with the project, but the senior management team has responded to the presentation with the following questions and concerns:

(12.3.2: Describe the implementation of controls.)

  • How will security be implemented in the Linux systems—both workstations and servers?

(10.1.2: Gather project requirements to meet stakeholder needs.)

  • End users have expressed some concern about completing their day-to-day tasks on Linux. How would activities such as web browsing work? How would they work with their previous Microsoft Office files?

(12.4.1: Document how IT controls are monitored.)

  • The current Windows administrators are unsure about administering Linux systems. How are common tasks, such as process monitoring and management, handled in Linux? How does logging work? Do we have event logs like we do in Windows?

(2.3.2: Incorporate relevant evidence to support the position.)

  • Some folks in IT raised questions about the Linux flavor that was recommended. They would like to see comparisons between your recommendation and a couple of other popular options. What makes your recommendation the best option?

(10.1.3: Define the specifications of the required technologies.)

  • How does software installation work on Linux? Can we use existing Windows software?
  • How can Linux work together with the systems that will continue to run Windows? How will we share files between the different system types?

The deliverable for this phase of the project is a memo. There is no minimum or maximum page requirement, but all of the questions must be fully answered with sufficient detail. The recommended format is to respond to the questions in a bulleted format. Provide sufficient detail to fully address the questions. You must cite at least two quality sources.

(1.2.3: Explain specialized terms or concepts to facilitate audience comprehension.)

Create a memorandum template with a header of your own design or choosing, brief introduction, addresses Faster Computing, Inc’s questions, and summarizes your position on adopting the specific version of Linux.

(1.4.3: Write concise and logical sentences in standard academic English that clarify relationships among concepts and ideas.)

Your memorandum should not include spelling or grammatical errors. Any Linux commands must be displayed in lower case. Information technology acronyms (e.g., SSH or FTP) should be explained for the reader.
