4-1 Public Policy Chart

Overview: For this assignment, due in Module Four, you will create a public policy chart describing the public policy issue that you will address with the departmental policy recommendations for your final project. A visual chart is a useful way to deliver a good deal of information about a public policy to one’s colleagues in a criminal justice department. With the chart, one can see at a glance the policy described in broad terms, including the history of the policy in the department, any key trends associated with the policy, why a change to a departmental policy is called for, and how one might address any potential negative consequences that may be associated with changing the policy. This chart, and instructor feedback to it, will be useful to you as you continue to navigate through the course. It will be particularly helpful as you work on your Milestone Two and Three submissions. Prompt: In your public policy chart, examine the following by creating a table with five columns: 1. The first column should describe, in broad terms, the public policy issue (e.g., domestic violence) you selected in Milestone One, which you will address with your departmental policy recommendations for your final project. 2. The second column should describe how this issue has been addressed, historically, by your criminal justice department. 3. The third column should identify key trends throughout the history of the policy issue that have shaped the development and implementation of public policies addressing the issue. 4. The fourth column should explain why a change is called for in the departmental policy (media outcry, legal decisions, public perception, interest groups, etc.). 5. The fifth column should address the potential negative collateral consequences of the changes proposed. How can these potential negative collateral consequences help you predict the future direction of public policies to address the issue? Make sure that you provide support for the information you provide in each column of the chart and include citations in a reference page. Please use the Public Policy Chart Instructions and Template to complete this task. Guidelines for Submission: Your public policy chart should be a single document with one-inch margins containing a 5-column chart. Written components should be single-spaced using 12-point Times New Roman font. Cite your sources in APA format within the text of your chart and in the reference section.

Develop a staff orientation plan

Chapter 15 Scenario: Infant Feeding Orientation

Objective and scenario

To develop and evaluate a staff orientation plan.

It is January, and you are preparing for the arrival of a new group of early childhood student volunteers from a nearby college. Because this is their first experience working in a center, you assign them to classrooms with the youngest infants (2 to 6 months) where they will assist the teachers during bottle-feeding times. Several infants have a history of repeated ear infections, so it will be important that the students adhere to strict protocol during bottle preparation and feedings. It is your responsibility, as the director of this large early childhood center, to provide the orientation and pre-service training for these students.

F0cus assignment

1. For the first step of your staff orientation plan, prepare a review of the developmental milestones, including eating behaviors, for typically developing infants at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. Next, develop a step-by-step outline for bottle preparation and feeding procedures that the students must follow.
2. Be sure to read the REFLECTION section below to guide your thinking. Write your reflection response after you have completed your orientation plan.

Self-evaluation

. For each item in your staff orientation plan:
     a. Explain how this item addresses the issues in the scenario.

2. Describe and justify how your staff orientation plan would improve teaching and learning in the scenario.

CIO Scenario

You have just accepted a position to become the CIO at a brand new start-up (Gyroband) company in California. The company will be manufacturing and selling a revolutionary computer headset that uses nerve impulses to control the computer. You have orders in excess of 100,000 now and expect to double every year for at least 5 years. Your product will be offered to the U.S. initially and internationally next year. Your new company has secured sufficient venture capital to start-up and had to turn away many other backers so money is not a problem.

Assumptions

The building will be ready for occupancy in one month. The only employees of the company are the CEO, Board of Directors, CIO, and 3 other Vice Presidents, and 12 Directors. Employees of the company have not yet been hired and you will be arriving at a medium sized manufacturing site with no IT infrastructure or IT leadership team – other than you.

Assignment

Develop the following for the IT department that you are heading up within the company of Gyroband – your focus should be on IT needs of the new company, not on the company in general:

A. Mission statement for the IT Department

B. Short-term and long-term goals for the IT Department

C. First year budget requirements for IT Department that details labor FTE and dollars by type (employees, contractors, consultants), hardware, software, materials, overheads and other items. This should be presented in the form of charts and graphs rather than an excel table or other table format. A minimum of 5 charts is required.

D. Develop an organization chart for the IT department (MS Visio, MS PowerPoint, or other drawing tool)

E. Identify the top 10 risks that the IT Department will face during the first year and the mitigation strategy for each risk.

The format for this should be a brief PowerPoint presentation intended for a meeting with your CEO and Board of Directors to gain budget approval. This is your first meeting with the Board of Directors so you must make a good impression. You may include an appendix to support your presentation at the back of your PowerPoint, if needed.

2 Extra Credits – ART100

EXTRA CREDIT 1

W4: Extra Credit Artist’s Social Media

  • This week, for two points of extra credit, find an Instagram (or other social media) account of a contemporary artist you’d like to share with the class that is connected to this week’s chapters.
  • You can select any contemporary artist from Asia or the Islamic world. You can also select an artist who is Muslim or Asian American or features/relates to Islam in their work.
  • If they or you don’t have an Instagram account, you can substitute any kind of social media site or website. Include one image of their artwork (with its info) and a few sentences with their bio and a description of the kind of art they create.
  •  —————————————–

EXTRA CREDIT 2:

Select one of the topics below to write about:

Topic #1 – Removal of Statues of Controversial Figures

For this topic, read the following articles to get you started (you’re welcome to also do your own research) about the recent removal of statues of Confederates and others who have controversial histories (such as their enslavement of people, role in colonization, racists beliefs, etc.) across the United States and Europe. This began a few years ago but over the last few weeks, with the momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement, more have been removed from public view either by city officials or protestors. In California and the Southwest, there are few Confederate statues. Instead there are more works of public art connected to colonization and violence against Native Americans via the Spanish Missionaries and Conquistadors which are also coming down. In 300 words or more, summarize the debate and include your opinion. Remember to cite your sources. Need help knowing how to cite and use in-text citations? See the page on citations in Week 1’s course orientation module.

Some questions to think about include: Should these controversial statues be removed? What are some proposals for what should be done with them?  These are now being removed en masse as a result of protests and public outcry that started with the Black Lives Matter movement. What do you think was the tipping point and why do you think it didn’t happen sooner?

Topic #2 – Looting and Museums

For this topic you’ll think on why many works of art are located in countries where they did not originate such as the Ishtar Gate is in Berlin, the Code of Hammurabi is in Paris, and the Benin Bronzes in London. How did these items come to be where they are? Should they be returned to their country of origin? Who ‘owns’ a work of art – the person who purchases it or the country/culture related to its artist? These questions relate to the idea of cultural patrimony (important cultural artifacts should stay in their country of origin) and cases of cultural restitution (the return of artwork to its home country) happening more and more frequently.

In 300 words or more, summarize and weigh in on one of the longest and most public examples of cultural restitution  – the Parthenon (or Elgin) Marbles at the British Museum.  Remember to cite your sources. Need help knowing how to cite and use in-text citations? See the page on citations in Week 1’s course orientation module.

Some questions to think about include: What is the history of these marbles and how did they end up largely in London as well as other sites outside of Athens? What is the argument for the British Museum keeping them and what is the argument for returning them to Athens? Do you think they should stay where they are currently or be reunited? What could be a solution to this issue?

Helpful articles and video:

Topic #3 #MeToo and Museums

For this topic, read the following articles about how museums are attempting to address works in their collections by (largely famous) artists who are accused of sexual assault and harassment. Then in 300 words or more, summarize the debate and include your opinion. Remember to cite your sources. Need help knowing how to cite and use in-text citations? See the page on citations in Week 1’s course orientation module.

Some questions to consider: How can museums best respond to such accusations and correctly contextualize it for the visitor? Do you think museums have a responsibility to include and address this history/these accusations or is that beyond the realm of the museum? What are some options for how museums should best respond – edit labels, take down work, etc.?

Topic #4 Money and Museums

For this topic, read the following articles about how the public should ask questions (and critique) where museums get their funding. Then in 300 words or more, summarize the debate and include your opinion. Remember to cite your sources. Need help knowing how to cite and use in-text citations? See the page on citations in Week 1’s course orientation module.

Some questions to consider: Do you think museums should be transparent about their sources of funding and sponsorship?  What could be the benefit of this and what could be a downside? How could where funding comes from be problematic?

Watch and answer s

Watch this video and answer the following questions I need 300-350

http://bevideos.mhhe.com/business/video_library/0073529931/swf/Clip_04.html

  1. How does Starbucks’ policy of corporate social responsibility impact the company’s bottom line?
  2. As Starbucks continues its global expansion, what must it do to ensure that the company maintains its socially conscious focus?
  3. How many countries is Starbuck’s conducting business in?  What are their top five most successful international business (name the countries).
  4. Can you think of another company that demonstrates socially responsible – a company that is known for their philanthropy?
  5. What have you learned about the new Milan, Italy Starbucks via research?  Was this a good idea?  This is said to be the last major opening under Howard Schultz’s retirement.

Deliver solid content in 300-350 words –   deductions taken for shorter responses.  Remember that the restatement of the questions and the reference recap at the bottom of your  postings do not count towards the word count requirement.

Use   an authored outside   reference beyond your textbook. Zero points given for non-authored web   sources.  It is   okay/great to use your textbook, but I want to see more research beyond your   text. You may use a brand web page too, but you still need an authored source   too. Recap your reference in APA format only   at the bottom of your posting. Your reference must be clearly   cited in APA format within your posting to count. Always provide   the exact web site address for this course in your recap of references for   full credit.

Research always beyond the   materials provided to ADD to the discussion.  An authored source is simply one   that is associated with a human(s) NAME.   For example, your textbook is   an authored source.  The United States Census Bureau is not an authored   source.  But it is fine to use as long as you ALSO use an authored   reference source.

No videos, blogs, tweets, wikis, interviews, podcasts, encyclopedias,   or dictionaries allowed – use an authored reference.

Knowledge Project

For this project, you will be writing a thematic analysis paper. This is your final paper for high school English, and it should demonstrate everything you have learned not only in this unit, but in this class, and in your entire high school career.

Your paper will compare and contrast Macbeth with another piece that we read in this class. This means that first you will need to choose a theme from Macbeth(knowledge, ambition, etc.), and then choose another story from this course that handles a similar theme.

The focus of your paper should be on how this theme is developed throughout each story. You should show how the writer uses the plot, characters, sequencing, or other techniques to create a conclusion about this theme. (For example, “Shakespeare uses the genre of tragedy to show us how ambition can lead to an ultimate downfall.”) Then, deepen the conversation by adding a comparison and contrast to another piece we read in this class. (“In contrast, the genre of epic glorifies ambition, which we see clearly through the way Beowulf boasts about his strength and then goes on to slay his enemies.”)

Focus on these points:

Focus on these points:

  • What assertion does the story make about the theme? (Ambition is dangerous. Femininity does not mean weakness or frailty.)
  • What techniques does the writer use to create this assertion? (Characters, plot, genre, literary devices, etc.)
  • What similarities are there between the themes in the two stories? (Both Macbeth and Beowulf are prime examples of masculinity.)
  • What significant differences are there between the themes in the two stories? (Macbeth ultimately destroys his community, his loved ones, and himself; Beowulf uses his strength to save people from a terrible monster.)
  • What can we learn about this theme from the comparison and contrast of these two stories? (While we see ambition, strength, and cruelty as essential parts of masculinity in these two stories, it is in the selfishness of the individual that danger lies.)

For an additional level of challenge, you may consider adding a third story that we studied in class to your essay. For my example topic of Masculinity, I chose to write about Macbeth and Beowulf. Adding a discussion of King Arthur might provide another dimension. However, discussing three stories is optional.

Your paper must include textual analysis. (Review this unit’s close reading pages to review.) Use a minimum of six passages (quotes) from the stories throughout your paper (at least one per story, per body paragraph).

This essay should be between two and five pages (500-1250 words) in length. Your final draft should be saved and submitted as .doc or .pdf file. It should be in 12-point font in Times New Roman.

10% of your grade will be on grammar and mechanics. Write as clearly and correctly as you can. This means that 90% of your grade is based on your ideas – however, you will not earn an A if you do not proofread carefully and check for errors.

Most importantly, remember this is a culminating project for English 12. Your essay should show everything you have learned throughout the class.

Your paper must have all of the following. If it does not, you will receive an automatic failing grade for not following instructions. ● One central theme ● A discussion of the theme in Macbeth ● A discussion of the theme in another story studied in this course. ● Paper focuses on how the theme is developed across each story. ● Paper uses comparison and contrast skills. ● Paper includes textual analysis (six quotes minimum). ● Displays polish (less than a handful of errors throughout the paper). ● Displays effort. If your paper has all of the above elements, you will be graded using this rubric: Thematic Analysis Essay Rubric Excellent Average Poor Focus Worth: 20% Essay is focused on answering the essay prompt Writer stays ontopic Essay has its own focus, but may not address the prompt Essay does not address prompt Thesis Statement Worth: 20% Thesis statement is argumentative and tells the reader what the essay will assert Thesis statement is present but not argumentative or does not explain what direction the essay will take Thesis statement is absent Support/Textual Evidence Worth: 20% Essay includes six or more quotes from the text Essay explains the relevance of the quotes used and relates them to the thesis’s argument Essay includes between two and five quotes Essay does not incorporate quotes into the argument Essay has only one quote or does not have quotes from the text

Collection Paper Due May 13

Take a look at Digital Maryland or WHILBR, two Maryland sites that digitize primary sources from institutions (libraries, archives, and museums) in Maryland. Pick a collection that interests you and contains sources that “speak” about, or for, women in history. Pick one or two items (artifacts, documents, photographs, etc.) and using the “Questions for Analysis” found in the textbook write a 4-to-5-page study of these items and what they tell about women in history. It can be longer. I will read, and grade, whatever you submit. You should also use what you’ve learned about women’s history in this course to analyze the sources. This is your big finish, prove that you have been intellectually active during the semester. Your textbook will be your major secondary source. You may also use other published sources if you would like. If you use specific information from the textbook, you should footnote the textbook for that information. It goes without saying that you would do the same for any other secondary source you utilize. You must footnote the specific primary and/or visual sources that you are analyzing. Please be careful, when you read the material in the book, to distinguish between the words of primary sources and the words written by the textbook authors (secondary source material). When you use or quote material, you need to know (and say) whose thoughts and words you’re working with. Advice about tone and approach: Write this assignment as a paper, not like an answer to an essay question. That is, the paper should be able to stand alone. Introduce your topic at the beginning. Briefly introduce your sources, either at the beginning or when you come to each one in the paper. You don’t need to justify why you picked out those sources. Just briefly introduce them and then analyze them. You should discuss the “collection” they came from – the name of the collection, which institution holds the materials, and the collection’s provenance. 9

Asymmetric Information and Health Insurance

This week’s assignment is about asymmetric information, specifically asymmetric information in the healthcare industry.   Related topics are adverse selection and moral hazard.  These terms are related but each as a particular meaning, so it is important to keep your definitions straight (in all honesty, I find these easy to trip over myself).   You must use the proper definitions as we understand these in Managerial Economics.  (Hint: “moral hazard” is not the same as “moral issue.”)

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, it is essential that you read Cardon and Hendel’s article, Asymmetric Information in Health Insurance: Evidence from the National Medical Expenditure Survey(Links to an external site.).This is a lengthy and dense article so you want to start reading now!

My recommendation is to outline your essay to the assignment description and rubric, employing my Writing Tips from Week #2.  Why?  Because this will minimize your effort and maximize your success!  Your sections (identified with skillful paragraph transitions and not with headings) would be:

  1. Evaluate the causes of asymmetric information in the healthcare industry.
  2. Analyze potential adverse selection and moral hazard problems in the healthcare industry.
  3. How can health insurance providers reduce or resolve the adverse selection and moral hazard problems?

As always, be sure to answer each part of the assignment.  Your answers (which will be the topic sentences of the paragraphs of your essay if you are following my Writing Tip #2) will of course be supported by logical argument and the other sentences of your paragraphs.  It is good practice to employ at least one citation from an academic source in support of each of your arguments (in support of each of your topic sentences and in support of your response to each part of the assignment).

  • Must be three to five double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style (Links to an external site.) as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least three scholarly sources in addition to the course text.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric (Links to an external site.) for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Discussion: Sharing Culturally Responsive Leadership Practices

Discussion: Sharing Culturally Responsive Leadership Practices

For this discussion, you will interview two change leaders individually about how each addresses inequalities in access, opportunity, and outcomes for the learners in their education settings. Their role must include influencing and/or determining policy at the systemic level of a learning organization. Examples might include: P–12 or university leader, government official, member of an education board, director of a learning organization, or professional education organization leader.

To prepare:
Design five questions for your interviewees that will provide insights into and examples of:

  • leader’s understanding of culturally responsive education prices
  • How the leader’s organization has implemented or advocates implementing to promote culturally responsive education practices
  • How the leader’s organization evaluates the effectiveness of policy intended to promote culturally responsive education practices
  • Culturally responsive leadership theories that inform each leader’s actions (i.e., authentic leadership, social justice leadership, ethical leadership, and/or moral transformative leadership)
  • Conduct the interviews
By Day 7 of Week 7

Post a summary of your interviews. (Do not use actual names.)

Include:
A brief description of the change leaders you interviewed, including the scope of their leadership role and how they influence and/or determine policy at the systemic level of a learning organization. For each leader, summarize his or her responses to your interview questions and prompts.
Based on these responses, evaluate the status of culturally responsive education practice and leadership at each learning organization, including:

  • Strengths and/or weaknesses regarding culturally responsive education practices
  • Evidence of culturally responsive leadership practices in the leader you interviewed
  • Concerns and recommendations for each leader to improve his or her culturally responsive education practices and leadership. Cite resources to support your concerns and/or recommendations.

Explain how you would use what you have learned from these interviews to address the culturally responsive education needs in your context or in a context you hope to serve as a change leader.
