If you are using an online source, be sure to provide the article title and include a direct link to the internet page address where I can see the article).  If you are using a paper source, like from a printed magazine or newspaper, be sure to provide the title of the article, the name of the periodical and date of publication and upload a scanned copy of the article to include it as past of your submission. • If I am unable to access the article you are critiquing because you did not provide a working link or copy of the article, I will be unable to mark this assignment and you will receive a grade of 0.

Be sure to Summarize the significant points made in the article. (maximum 1 page). Evaluate the article and explain the reasoning using the following criteria:

(a) accuracy (check other sources or the textbook to see if the information is accurate) (b) bias (i.e. has the author selected information to present one point of view rather than a balanced one?) (c) complexity level (i.e. technical; for the reader who is well informed but not a specialist; or popular – give some examples of vocabulary) (d) clarity of presentation (is the information presented in a logical and clearly understood fashion?) (e) source of information (does the writer mention sources or quote other experts to validate the article?) This evaluation should be concise but be sure to explain the reasoning behind your evaluations and use examples if necessary to illustrate your points.

Be sure to explain how the issues discussed in your article affect or can be beneficial to individuals or families in Canada. BMGT 496 – Business Ethics – Starbuck Airport Dispute

Please see the discussion question below. Must be 1-2 pages in length. CAN ONLY USE ATTACHED CLASS RESOURCES. APA format, in-text citation, and reference page.

Starbucks is Pressured to Intervene in Airport Dispute

Starbucks is caught in a workplace culture dispute between its airport store employees and HMSHost, one of its airport store operators, the NYT reports. Unite Here, a union representing airport retail workers, claims that at Starbucks’s airport stores had the following issues:

  • Median wages for black baristas are less than those for white baristas.
  • Managers purposely referred to transgender employees using incorrect pronouns.
  • Employees have been told to only speak English.

HMSHost denied all claims of discrimination. “Our fair treatment policy ensures an open and inclusive environment,” it said in a statement.

Why it matters: Workers at Starbucks’s airport stores aren’t technically employed by Starbucks. So while Starbucks corporate has grabbed headlines for employee bias training and expanded benefits, its franchise locations (like those run by HMSHost) aren’t included in those initiatives. Unite Here wants Starbucks to convince HMSHost to adopt those practices at its airport franchises.

Zoom out: Corporations have deflected blame for employee mistreatment to franchise operators. When accusations of sexual harassment at McDonald’s surfaced in 2018, the company argued it wasn’t liable for actions of employees at independent stores.

Help Starbucks determine the best course of action by supporting an argument from Week 1 – 7’s reading.

Introduction

Johari window

In MGT501, you were introduced to the Johari window as a tool for increasing awareness of how one is perceived by others and to improve communication. This case is designed to enlarge your “open” area and reduce your “blind” area, so you can be more effective as a coach. At the same time, you will learn to use coaching techniques as a way to correct problem behaviors (“blind area”) and help coachees realize they have untapped potential and open the possibility for growth through unused capacities (their “hidden” areas”).

The structure of the Live Case

Each module will follow this cycle: Plan, execute, report

  • Before the coaching session, write up a plan using course readings or additional research as a resource (1-2 pages)
  • Then meet with the coachee and use your plan as a guide for the session
  • The bulk of the report is on how it went: successes and failures. What would you do differently next time? (3 to 5 pages)

Preplanning

Action

Reflection

What are your goals for the session?

What actions do you plan?

How will you know if you are successful?
  (1-2 pages

Meet with coachee (45-50 minutes).

Report on the session. Provide a  narrative descriptive summary of the conversation as it occurred (1 or 2   paragraphs).

How do you feel the session went?

Analyze the process and outcomes of  your coaching.

What new knowledge did you gain?

What would you do differently next  time?

ASSIGNMENT,

The first step in the coaching process is to build rapport with the person you are coaching. This is where you establish a trusting relationship by demonstrating your credibility, helpfulness, and honesty. To build genuine rapport, you must believe in the potential of the person you are coaching—this cannot be faked.

Some excellent methods for building rapport can be found in the following readings:

Remember: Shared success is the key to great coaching!

Shared success means that the outcome works for both the individual and the organization, because it meets both individual and organizational needs. Coaching is a tool where we are able to create that connection between the person and the organization.

Turn in your final 4- to 6-page paper to the appropriate dropbox by the due date.

  1. After reading the background materials for this module and doing additional research if needed, prepare your pre-coaching plan for a 45- to 50-minute session. Remember that your focus for this case is on the process of building rapport with the coachee.
  • What are your goals for this session? How will you know if you are successful?
  • What skills will you use?
  • How will you go about doing this?
  • What questions will you ask?
  1. Conduct your coaching session (45 to 50 minutes).
  2. Write up your post-coaching reflection.
  • Report the facts of the coaching session.
  • What went well and what did not?
  • What did you learn about coaching from this session?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Anomie and Strain Theory Case Study

Watch the film Falling Down starring Michael Douglas to see the effects of anomie or strain and relate the film to research by Merton, Agnew, and other strain theorists. Analyze how the lead character’s behavior demonstrates these theories.

According to rational choice theory, law-violating behavior is the product of careful planning and thought processes—the concept of free will is thus introduced. Anomie (theory) results when socially defined goals are mandated but access to legitimate means is stratified by class and status. The result is a lack of norms or clear social standards. Strain (theory) is the emotional turmoil and conflict caused when people believe they cannot achieve their desired goals through legitimate means.

After you have analyzed the lead character’s behavior in terms of anomie and strain theories, extrapolate this analysis to the group you are studying for your final project.

  • How would these pressures present themselves in a group setting?
  • Is there still an American dream in this country? Has this concept changed for certain groups in this country? How so?
  • Does society place too much emphasis on success today?
  • What are some examples that illustrate this relative to your specific gang or group?

BACKGROUND

This week, we examine a 31-year-old male who presents to the office with a chief complaint of insomnia.

SUBJECTIVE

Patient is a 31-year-old male. He states that his insomnia has gotten progressively worse over the past 6 months. Per the patient, he has never been a “great sleeper” but is now having difficulty both falling asleep and staying asleep at night. The problem began approximately 6 months ago after the sudden loss of his fiancé. The patient states this is affecting his ability to perform his job, which is a forklift operator at a local chemical company. The patient states he has used diphenhydramine in the past to sleep but does not like the way it makes him feel the morning after. He states he has fallen asleep on the job due to lack of sleep from the night before. The patient’s medical record from his previous physician states that he has a history of opiate abuse, which began after he broke his ankle in a skiing accident and was prescribed hydrocodone/apap (acetaminophen) for acute pain management. The patient has not received a prescription for an opiate analgesic in 4 years. The patient states recently he has been using alcohol to help him fall asleep, approximately four beers prior to bed.

MENTAL STATUS EXAM

The patient is alert and oriented to person, place, time, event. He makes good eye contact and is dressed appropriately for time of year. He denies auditory/visual hallucinations. Judgement, insight, and reality contact are all intact. Patient denies suicidal/homicidal ideation, and is future oriented.

Decision Point One

Trazodone: 50–100 mg daily at bedtime

RESULTS OF DECISION POINT ONE

  • Patient returns to clinic in 2 weeks
  • Patient states medication works well but gives him an unpleasant side effect of a prolonged erection of the penis, approximately 15 minutes after waking
  • Patient states this makes it difficult to get ready for work or go downstairs and have coffee with his girlfriend and daughter in the morning
  • Patient denies auditory/visual hallucinations and is future oriented

Decision Point Two

Explain that priapism is a side effect of trazodone that should diminish over time. Continue dose

RESULTS OF DECISION POINT TWO

  • Patient returns to clinic in 2 weeks
  • Patient states priapism has diminished over time
  • Patient denies auditory/visual hallucinations and is future oriented
  • Patient states trazodone is effective at 50 mg dose but sometimes wakes up following day with next-day drowsiness
  • Patient denies auditory/visual hallucinations and is future oriented

Decision Point Three

Continue dose. Explain to patient he may split the 50 mg tablet in half. The decreased dose should minimize next-day drowsiness. Follow up in 4 weeks

Guidance to Student
Trazodone is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor that has a low side effect profile. It would not be prudent to prescribe sonata as it carries with it the risk of complex sleep behaviors. Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine with strong sedative properties. However, many patients complain of anticholinergic adverse effects the following morning, such as Xerostomia and Xerophthalmia.
The patient is presenting with excessive somnolence. It would be prudent to reduce the dose of trazodone by 50% and reassess in 4 weeks.
