PHIL DISCUSSION 8

Questions for Discussion #8 – Fallacies

Find an example of one of the fallacies described in Chapter 1 of the text (pp. 22 – 28). Social media and opinion sites on the Internet are great potential sources.

FOCUS ON CHAPTER 1 PAGE 22-28 AND PPT 10

For your post, share a link to the example that you found, identify the fallacy that you identified, and explain why you think this fallacy has been committed.

Discussion Assignments have the following objectives:

  1. Identify and describe key concepts presented in textbook reading material, video lectures, and other assigned content.
  2. Draw connections between assigned content material and practical areas of interest.
  3. Explore ideas in philosophical depth beyond the presentation of course material.
  4. Draw connections between philosophical discourse and one’s practical life.
  5. Engage in respectful philosophical conversation.
    1. This objective will be measured according to replies posted to other students or to professors.

6. 3 sources of references

When completing discussion assignments, please remember:

  • Your main post should take a minimum of 300 words. Explain and support what you say.
  • Any sources that you use must – including textbook and video lectures – be cited and referenced responsibly. (APA)
  • You should post at least two substantial replies to other participants.
  • Please refer to the syllabus and grading rubric for more guidance.

Free-Write and Poem

Step One: Think of a place you love. It can be one that have fond memories of or currently enjoy spending time in and around. Notice what stands out to you and provide the reader with sensory details about the environment, the sights, the sounds, the people or lack of people, the animals, the weather, etc. Rather than telling the reader what you love about this place, show them your love for the place through your attention to detail and through the language and tone you use to describe it.

Use humor, diction, pacing, dialogue, etc. Focus on showing, not telling.

For example, I love the library. I can tell you “I love the library” or I write a paragraph describing the endless rows of books, the voice of the librarian helping a student research a paper, the smell of the coffee in the cafe cart out front, and the weight of a pile of books in my tote bag as I walk outside on a beautiful sunny day to show you the love I have for the local library.

Step Two: Turn this piece into a poem. Remember, poems do not have to rhyme and do not have to be in a specific form unless you want them to be. You can write a free verse poem, a sonnet, a haiku, or any other form, or you can invent a form.

Try to use a lot of images and maybe add a metaphor or two.

Your poem should demonstrate your love for the place through interesting language and vivid imagery. Don’t forget to give it a title. Poem can be any length and any style.

Discussion Board Forum

You will choose a key term to research. You will be required to write a thread of at least 400 words on the topic, complete with page references and specifics to document the response, and submit it to the corresponding Discussion Board Forum. Proper English and grammar are required.

To complete your thread:

  1. Select a key      term from assigned chapters.
  2. Conduct an      Internet search to find and read 3 recent articles that relate to the term.
  3. Select the 1      article that you wish to discuss.
  4. Submit a thread      that contains the following information in the following format, using the headers so that you ensure that all aspects of the assignment are completed as required.
    1. Definition: Give a brief       definition of the key term followed by the current APA reference for the       term; this does not count in the 400-word requirement. The textbook       should be used and cited for this portion of the assignment.
    2. Summary: Give a brief summary of       the selected article, in your own words. Remember when summarizing an       article, one should cite properly.
    3. Discussion

i. Give a brief discussion of how the article relates to the selected chapter key term. This gives you the opportunity to add value to the discussion by sharing your experiences, thoughts, and opinions. Draw your peers into discussion of topics by asking questions. This is the most important part of the thread.

ii. Biblical Integration: Use at least one appropriate scripture verse or narrative from the Bible to support your discussion and use it in proper context. Are there any Biblical examples of this term, is the term you are responding to related to a term you researched, if so, how?

iii. Include the complete URL of each article read. Each reference and article  must be in current APA format. These do not count toward the 400-word requirement.

Project paper – COmputer Science

For the final project, you will be conducting a forensics investigation using one of the following items:

  1. A smartphone
  2. A network (ideally, a wireless network)

You may use either for your investigation. However, be aware of legal issues surrounding your data gathering. If you are using any system you do not personally control and have authority to investigate/discover, please get written permission from the owner/operator of the system or refrain from your forensics analysis of that systems and use a personal system. For a network, you can use your own personal home network. For a smartphone, consider using an image from the Internet or a personal device. There could be issues related to using a live, active, personal device (example: corruption of the device). If using a personal device, consider using an old, outdated phone, if available.

You will review various forensics tools used with your selected system. Select a tool and use that tool to gather forensics data for analysis. You are simulating the process of gathering this data, so you do not need to investigate a compromised device or system. The project deliverables are as follows:

Week 7 – Prepare an investigative report of the forensics data capture conducted using the tool selected for this purpose. The paper should provide the following information:

  • Executive Summary of your investigation, including a description of the device or systems and the tool used for the forensics analysis
  • Step-by-step description you used to gather data for analysis
  • Report on the information that was obtainable from the device
  • Graphics evidence that you conducted the forensics data gathering and analysis

The paper should be in a form that would be used for reporting to a court or a law enforcement agency. Be sure to provide graphics evidence of your forensics investigation effort (Screenshots, reports, etc.). References should be in APA format.

Assignment: Public Health Education Flyer/Press Release

Can you imagine throwing a party only to have one guest attend? It would be the same as creating a public health education program that no one notices. What good does a public health education program do if no one knows that it exists? In order for a public health education program to be successful, the public must know about it and choose to participate in it. The most direct way to accomplish this is through effective communication and marketing.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review the Learning Resources on developing press releases and effective health information and messaging.
  • Based on these guidelines, begin to develop a flyer or press release for one of the three programs you proposed for the Week 2 Discussion. Consider the appropriateness of the different features of the flyer or press release (e.g., reading level, graphics). Think about the elements and strategies associated with social marketing: product, price, place, promotion, partnership, policy, and politics.

To complete this Assignment:

  • Create a 1-page flyer or press release for one of the three public health education programs you proposed for the Week 2 Discussion (using Microsoft Word).
  • In addition, in 1–2 pages, provide your rationale for the various features you incorporated. Explain how the flyer or press release addresses the needs of the intended audience, including the targeted reading level.

Note: Please be sure that you use only royalty- and copyright-free images and graphics in your flyer or press release. You may not simply copy and paste any image you find on the Internet. In addition, be sure that your work is your own and not a copy of an existing handout or flyer.

Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources as appropriate.

Women and work

Refer to at least three of the learning resources for the week in your response to one or more of the questions below. Include specific examples from your life, history, the news, or the media.

  • Why do legal protections for women’s employment rights continue to be an issue? Why isn’t women’s legal access to employment a sufficient victory?
  • How do laws protecting women in the workplace benefit society as a whole?
  • What factors keep men and women segregated into “masculine” and “feminine” jobs? Why do you think these divisions persist? What does it take to turn a job into a gender-neutral one? Can you think of any examples of where this has happened?
  • Is Affirmative Action policy still needed? If so, how would you administer it fairly? If not, which of the reasons for its creation do you think are no longer valid?
  • Why does unpaid domestic labor fall so unequally to women? Why is this a problem? Can you suggest some solutions?
  • Why are so many women involved in part-time work? How could part-time or home-based work be made more equitable for women? What conditions need to exist before women are able to make a genuine choice between part-time vs. full-time labor?
  • Why does it matter if women are in executive positions in business or not?
  • How does the #MeToo movement fit into discussions about women’s equality in the workforce? Here are a few articles that will help you get caught up on this recent movement. If you respond to this question, refer to at least one of our assigned learning resources for the week in addition to any references to the articles below:

References

References: Use APA parenthetical citations in your text and include a reference list at the end of your post. When you refer to and/or discuss any resources, you need to include a citation for that source, such as: (Braincraft, 2015).

A lot of you focused on women in the arts in your discussions.. If you did not take a look at the link on the Judy Chicago exhibit, I highly recommend it. One of my favorite museums to visit is the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Currently it is difficult to visit places in person. The museum has created a few online exhibits. To see them go to their website https://nmwa.org/

Marriage was one of the concepts that we talked about a great deal this week. I posted some of these citations a few times but I wanted to share them. Some of the best work on marriage and family has been done by historian Stephanie Coontz. Below I list a couple of her books as well as links to some of her talks on youtube.

Philosophy week 1 assignment 2 Socrates

Assignment 2- Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle

Read either Chapter 3 (Socrates). Write an essay that explains that philosophers’ main ideas as presented in the text and in other research* you might conduct. Recall the Key Idea from PowerPoint 2. In what ways do you see the influence of the philosopher you chose on our thinking today?

The purpose of this essay is to develop your skill in talking about philosophical ideas that you find in a text and to bring you to a deeper insight into these three foundational philosophers in the tradition of Western Civilization.

* Speaking of “other research”, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is an excellent online source that is usually a good first stop for philosophy research.   The dictionary can be found at https://plato.stanford.edu/ (Links to an external site.)

Objectives:

Assignments have the following objectives:

  1. Identify and describe key concepts relevant to a theme presented in the assignment prompt.
  2. Explore ideas in philosophical depth beyond the presentation of course material.
  3. Examine course material in order to develop an informed investigation of your perspectives on a theme presented in the assignment.
  4. Research scholarly sources to help explore and expand students’ perspectives and develop critical thinking skills.
  5. Develop a cogent argument to support your position.

Expectations:

  • All sources must be responsibly cited and referenced IN apa format.
  • Assignments should be around 750 – 1000 words.
