SOCW 6311 wk 11 Discussion 1: Translating Knowledge From an Evaluation Report

Instructors and professors often comment that they learn much more about their subject matter when they begin to teach it. When they try to explain the topic to someone else they begin to connect concepts in new ways. They anticipate questions that students might ask, consider different viewpoints, and think more critically.

For this Discussion, take the perspective of someone who is instructing his or her colleagues and sharing your understanding of research methods and program evaluation.

To prepare for the Discussion, select an (chose One of the 4 provided) evaluation report from this week’s resources. Consider how you would present the information to a group of colleagues.

Questions in bold then answers 300 to 500 words cite everything and full references

Post an analysis of how you would present the results of the evaluation to a group of social work colleagues. This is the evaluation report you selected from the resources

Identify the background information that you think they would need and the key message of your presentation.

Explain the strategies that you might use to meet your colleagues’ interests and goals.

Identify questions that your colleagues might have and what their reactions might be.

Consider the following scenarios:

Soon after her child’s birth, Myra began to feel overwhelmed with the daily tasks of caring for her infant. Initially, Myra noticed that she felt listless, and soon she started forgetting to do caregiving tasks and things around the house. Picking up has become a chore she avoids, and changing the baby into pajamas at night has turned into an unwanted task. She knows that reading and talking to her baby is important, but she does not have the energy. Instead, she elects to place him in front of the TV. Often, her baby, who is now 4 months old, will gaze up at her face during feeding, and Myra will gaze out the window, wondering how she will find the energy just to get through the day. On the one hand, she feels she needs to change course somehow, but on the other, she is consumed with feelings of isolation and an inability to act.

Jessie is also the parent of a 4-month-old. She is often tired but tries to keep on top of daily household and caregiving tasks, and her interactions with her infant son are a priority. She reads and sings to her son throughout the day and carefully follows the cues he gives her with his eyes—maintaining eye contact when his eyes seek her own, and lowering activity levels when his eyes look away. Although she certainly feels stressed at times, she tries to get enough sleep and frequently connects with her friends for input and advice.

Discussion Week 11

On Knowledge Management

Over the past weeks, we have examined the environment, technologies, and functions of HIT.  This brings us to the important concept of Knowledge Management (KM).  KM systems do two primary types of things.  Some store explicit types of knowledge (e.g., lists of directions, standard operating procedures, or policies) for retrieval by those who need to know how to do certain things.  Some systems either link up experts through a network or provide sources of rich media to pass on tacit types of knowledge (e.g., a video teaching someone to play guitar).  In either case, we are really talking about two different architectures:  one stores data in a database and the other connects people through a network.  Either way, the systems really only handle data and provide information.  Knowledge only happens when the data or information leave the system and cross over to the user.

You already have experience working with KM systems.  Google is arguably the largest database of information in general.  YouTube is a very large database of rich media (videos).  And Facebook is a web-app that connects people through a network.  There are other websites/web-applications that accomplish these same things (e.g., Khan Academy, Twitter, and Bing).

KM World is a magazine, website and conference dedicated to news, trends and case studies in knowledge management, content management, and document management.  Read KM World’s overview of KM:  “What is KM? Knowledge Management Explained”, in this week’s Course Content.

Managing knowledge is an integral aspect of healthcare.  Retrieval of reference information, electronic health records, decision support systems, continuing professional education, and patient education all interact on multiple levels to support wellness and care delivery.  Think about the KM system needs of your organization, and specifically the needs of your position.

What is KM? Knowledge Management Explained”, in this week’s Course Content.

Does your system need to handle only explicit types of knowledge?

How would you account for the transfer of tacit knowledge?

Will you simply store data and information or will your KM system have networking abilities as well?

Are KM systems really that much different than Google, YouTube, or Facebook?

Do we really even manage Knowledge or is this just a set of buzz words?  (“I know it’s true because I read it on the internet.”)

Discuss your thoughts and your experiences in this week’s Discussion session.

Deliverable 1 – Analyzing Leadership

Instructions

An effective leader must possess the skills, emotional intelligence, and knowledge base to influence and convince the members of the organization to not only adopt, but to become advocates for the change that the leader seeks to implement.

In order for one to develop the leadership skills that are required to affect change within the organization, one must become familiar with a variety of approaches previously utilized by successful leaders and managers in organizational transformation.

For this assignment, utilize the Rasmussen Business Library resource to research a business case study of an organization going through strategic change. Then research two leadership strategies that have been used to successfully drive organizational change during the past 10 years. Once you have located these strategies, write a paper analyzing the effectiveness of each strategy, and relate how effective management strategy alone may well be challenged to achieve desired change without effective leadership.

In your analysis, address the following:

  • Identify and research two leadership strategies.
  • Develop a description of the leadership strategies.
  • Formulate an overview of how the strategy is used and rate its effectiveness.
  • Argue whether the strategy is still relevant and effective in present day organizations. Why or Why not?
  • Describe how management alone will fall short of achieving desired organizational change without all levels of leadership effectively operating in their rolls.

Please identify these strategies from references found in the Rasmussen College Library.

Assignment Requirements are as follows:

  1. The body of the paper should be 2-3 pages.
  2. The paper should include an APA formatted cover page and reference page.
  3. The paper should include at least two peer-reviewed sources, such as journal articles from the Rasmussen Library.
  4. The paper should be proofread for correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

A note about peer reviewed resources: A peer-review is a process by which a scholarly work (such as a paper or a research proposal) is checked by a group of experts in the same field to make sure it meets the necessary standards before it is published or accepted.

Presenting the Case of Manuel

As a tenured special education teacher at the local public school you have been a key part of the of the multidisciplinary team process for the assessment of Manuel.  You have been able to work closely with Mr. Franklin, one of Manuel’s teachers.  You have contributed to the formal assessment process for this student who has exhibited learning challenges over a period of time.  As a result, you are now able to use this data to make informed decisions about his possible eligibility for special education services and the determination of the individualized supports.

As you become more competent in your field it is likely that you will be asked to create formal or informal presentations for families, teachers, or other professionals.  Imagine that you have been asked to present “The Case of Manuel” at a local workshop for the purpose of explaining the requirements of the assessment process, the components of the evaluation report, and how to base instructional recommendations based upon the data collected through the evaluation process.

Instructions:
For your final project you will create a presentation (Powerpoint with Speaker’s Notes) explaining the requirements of the assessment and evaluation process and how to construct instructional recommendations based upon the data collected through the evaluation process.  To do this, you will synthesize your own personal and professional experiences, current research, and the knowledge learned throughout this course.

Use the instructions below for the content and written communication expectations for the presentation.  Before submission, review your assignment using the Grading Rubric to insure it meets the expectations for distinguished performance.  If you have questions about the assignment or the rubric, please contact your Instructor using the “Ask Your Instructor” discussion before the due date.

Content Expectations:
Using information from your experiences with Manuel, create a presentation (14-15 slides in length) suitable for general education teachers and parents with children in special education settings.  Include speaker’s notes on each slide with scholarly citations written in APA 6th edition format to support your statements.

Use at least 10 scholarly sources to support your position pertaining to the evaluation and assessment process for students with mild to moderate disabilities.  The references must include:

  • Current research on the evaluation and assessment process,
  • At least one researched strategy for parent involvement, and
  • At least one researched strategy for ensuring that your assessment and evaluation methods are both valid and reliable.

In addition to the above general requirements, your presentation must contain the following specific elements:

  • A title slide with the following information (1 slide):
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Concise statement of the purpose of the presentation (1 slide).
  • Synopsis of the historical perspectives, current legal and ethical standards, and landmark cases that impacted the assessment and evaluation procedures used in the case of Manuel (2 slides).

  • APA format:  All in text citations, page format and references must be written in APA 6th edition format

Individual project 12/15 lab Environmental science & Sustainability lab

Can you computer by Monday?

Student Instructions

For each assignment, you will use the M.U.S.E. link to complete the lab.

In this lab, you will see the impacts associated with coal-fire or nuclear power plants for electricity generation. This will help you write a scientific paper that focuses on energy sources.

Energy Sources

Everything people do in their daily lives involves the consumption of resources. One resource in particular is energy. Electricity is one of the most important energy resources consumed. Electricity is also one of the highest in demand. Traditionally, fossil fuels have dominated the U.S. energy mix. Examples of fossil fuels include:

  • Coal
  • Natural gas
  • Oil

However, it is well-known that fossil fuels emit carbon into the environment. This is harmful to the environment because fossil fuels are contributing to global warming. Fortunately, alternative energy sources are becoming more efficient and popular. Examples of alternative energy sources include:

  • Solar
  • Wind
  • Hydro
  • Geothermal

Analyze energy sources, to write a scientific paper that addresses:

  • The 2 primary sources of electricity generation are coal and nuclear power plants. Which of these sources is better for human sustainability?

Using the M.U.S.E. link, review the background information and gather your data.

Review this video for a detailed overview of this assignment: https://breeze.careeredonline.com/pa30gmoj8hh1/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal . Scenarios:

A researcher wonders how well the sense of smell functions during sleep. In general, we know that our sensory systems operate at a higher threshold during sleep. That is, a more intense stimulus is required to elicit a response during sleep than during wakefulness. Furthermore, we are less responsive during some stages of sleep than during others. Experiments using sounds suggest that we are less responsive during stages 3 and 4 sleep (deep sleep) than during stages 1, 2, or REM sleep (lighter sleep). Thus, the 4 – 16 researcher predicts that research participants will be less responsive to odors during stages 3 and 4 sleep than during the other stages of sleep. The researcher devises a system for delivering odors while college students sleep in the laboratory. Peppermint fragrance is delivered at specific times through a modified oxygen mask that the students wear while they sleep. Electrodes are attached to each student’s scalp, face, and chin to determine sleep staging. Electrodes are also attached to each student’s chest to record heart rate. A change in heart rate following presentation of the odor is used to indicate that the participant detected the odor.

Instructions:

  1. Read the scenario above and answer the following questions:
    1. What is the research hypothesis?
    2. What is the independent variable?
    3. Is the independent variable a qualitative variable or a quantitative variable?  Explain.
    4. Why might the researchers want to use multiple dependent variables?
    5. Describe one limitation of this study.

Nursing concept map

             CONCEPT MAP

Pls. see Scenario below for your Concept Map.

SCENARIO:

Mr. Lee is a 72 year old patient who had abdominal surgery for a colon resection and removal of a tumor two days ago.  His nurse, Sam, implemented pain-control strategies in an effort to help him become more mobile so recovery could proceed. Up until now, he was getting out of bed and rating his pain at a level of 6 on a scale of 0 to 10.  The patient still tends to guard his incision by placing his hand over the wound when moving.

Mr. Lee weighs 250 lbs and is 5 ft 10 inches tall.  He has tried to cough more during his postoperative deep-breathing exercises.  Sam is caring for him for the third day in a row and begins the morning shift by inspecting his surgical wound.  The wound is approximately 18 cm in length and closed with steel sutures.  Sam notices separation of the wound between two sutures at the bottom of the incision. There is a small amount of serous-sanguineous drainage.  The area is inflamed and she asks the patient if the incision is tender when she gently palpates around the area.  Mr. Lee states, “Ow, that feels sore there.  I think I pulled it when I coughed last night.”  He also rates pain at this time as being at a level of 6.  Sam checks Mr. Lee’s vital signs and notes that his temperature of 32.2 C.  Sam also inspects the intravenous access device in the patient/s left forearm.  It is intact, and there are no signs of phlebitis at the IV site. Mr. Lee knows that he will have activity restrictions and his wife will be a resource to him once he returns home.  His discharge has been planned tentatively.  His family depends on his income.  Now he begins to share concerns with Sam about being able to return to work after surgery.  He does not consistently attend to nurse during instructions of his home instructions. Mr. Lee also verbalized some concern by asking Sam, “ The doctor told me that I would not be able to lift anything heavy and Im not so sure if I understand. The way my incision looks, will I need to do something to it?”
