Reading:

  • Harvey and Allard:
    • Section VI: Managing Organizational Change and Diversity: Current Issues
    • Section VII: Capstone Experiences for Understanding and Managing Diversity

Notes from the Harvey and Allard Text

Work-Life Balance Issues: Changing When and How the Work Gets Done

  • “Offering workplace flexibility relates directly to the business case for diversity because such policies attract a larger and better pool of potential applicants, decrease stress, burnout, absenteeism, and turnover” (p.338)
  • Implementation Gap: The resistance of organizational cultures to change.
  • “Work-life as a diversity issues results from changing gender roles, new family structures, differences between generational values that conflict with traditional work schedules and older employees financially unable or personally unwilling to retire” (p. 339)
  • Phased Retirement: A workplace plan that allows workers of a specified age to gradually reduce the hours that they work for their current employer.
  • Maternity Leave and Promotion: “The Six Sigma Case: Promotion at the Western Company” (p. 347) is a thought-provoking situation that provides an interesting dilemma.

One Workplace Bully Is One Too Many: The Four Faces of Bullying

  • Face One: Bullying  Defined as emotional abuse that causes humiliation and distress and interferes with work by harassing the victim. Bullying is a deliberate, hurtful, and repeated mistreatment most commonly by a superior to a subordinate.
  • Face Two: The Bully- “Vickers (2006) found the stereotypes depicting bullies as loud and assertive to be inaccurate; bullies often operate quietly and can be jealous and lack confidence” (p. 371)
  • Face Three: The Human Victims- The stereotype of victims as passive, having a low status, and not a member of the “in” group is true in some cases. Victims may have a predisposition to negativity, submissiveness, and a defeatist attitude.  However, some researchers have found that victims are more accomplished that the bully (p. 371)
  • Face Four: The Organization as a “Victim”- “Porteous (2002) noted that certain organizational factors can support workplace bullyings, such as highly competitive cultures, fear of replacement or layoffs, or an authoritarian management style that abuses power by behaviors such as setting impossible deadlines and assigning un-achievable tasks or targets. Organizations without codes of conduct or policies of behavior may encourage bullying by omission”(p. 373).

Reflection Questions

What have I done here?

What have I learned from what I have done here?

What will I do differently from what I have learned here?

What will I tell others about what I have learned here?

Sedentary behaviour

Question One.

Sedentary behaviour is defined as any waking activity that involves the expenditure of < 1.5 metabolic equivalents while in a sitting, lying or reclining position. Reduced prolonged sedentary behaviour (> 6 hours per day) has been found to improve negative health outcomes such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Louise wants to test the effectiveness of two interventions developed to reduce sedentary behaviour in university students. Twenty-four undergraduate students were invited to take part in the study and were randomised into one of two groups: skills-based training or education-based training. Participants in the skills-based training group were taught skills such as standing techniques while completing traditionally sedentary tasks. Participants in the education group were provided online talks by sedentary behaviour experts on the dangers of prolonged sedentary behaviour and the importance of reducing it.

Louise is interested in the following:

· Are sedentary behaviour scores significantly different depending on what group students were in? · Are there significant differences between sedentary behaviour scores at baseline and follow-up?

· Do sedentary behaviour scores differ significantly as a function of the interaction between intervention group and time? Louise has assessed sedentary behaviour by measuring students’ time spent sedentary per week using the sedentary behaviour section of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Each student had their weekly sedentary time measured at baseline and follow-up.

Instructions:

1. Assuming the data is parametric, conduct the appropriate analysis, including post hoc analyses if necessary.

2. Write a results section in APA format, incorporating results from the SPSS output, tables and graphs as appropriate.

Question Two.

Virtual reality immerses the user in a completely digital world that can simulate the real world as well as fictitious worlds. One use of virtual reality in psychological research is simulating real-world stressful events as a way of training individuals to become more resilient to them in their everyday lives. One common stressor that is tested in virtual reality is a fear of heights.

Kevin is interested in testing how effective various virtual reality equipment are at inducing stress in participants. For this experiment, participants were immersed in a virtual environment where they were standing on a plank on top of a skyscraper. Kevin recruited 18 participants from his local community, all aged between 18 and 25. Participants took part in three different virtual reality conditions over the course of three days (one condition per day): a non-immersive condition where participants were watching the simulation on a 2-D monitor; an immersive condition where participants wore a head-mounted display in a 2×2 square metre room enabling them to walk along the virtual plank freely and; a final immersive condition where participants also wore a head-mounted display but were asked to stand on a real plank to enhance immersion while standing on a virtual plank on top of a skyscraper. After each condition, participants were asked to complete the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).

Activity plans

*PLAGIARISM OPTION WILL BE BOUGHT****

The Assignment

You will develop two (2) activity plans, one (1) for each of the following age groups (Infants or toddlers and Preschool or Pre-Kindergarten).

Create an activity plan for children from each of the assigned age groups. The activities MUST be developmentally appropriate and encourage active exploration of materials and ideas. For the most part, the children should be able to do the activity with minimal guidance from their teachers, although teachers should interact with children, asking questions to encourage exploration, curiosity, problem solving, language development and deeper thinking. Dittos/coloring sheets, flash cards, product oriented projects (crafts), etc. will not be considered developmentally appropriate activities. The activities should be open-ended, encourage exploration, discovery, creativity and allow the children to build their own knowledge. These should be planned for centers or small groups, not the entire class (whole group). They can also take place outside. Each plan should focus on a different area of development (Emotional and Social Development, Health and Physical Development, Approaches to Learning, Language Development and Communication, or Cognitive Development).

Each activity plan should include the following and follow the format below:

1) Title of the Activity and age of the children participating

2) Area of Development (Domain) (Emotional and Social Development, Health and Physical Development, Approaches to Learning, Language Development and Communication, or Cognitive Development) PLEASE CHOOSE ONLY ONE AREA.

3) Goals addressed: If you do not have a goal listed you cannot get full credit for other sections.  The goal is what you want the children to learn from the activity. Be sure to list the goal (with letters and numbers included) EXACTLY as it is worded in the original NCFELD document.

Example:

Goal APL-1: Children show curiosity and express interest in the world around them

4) Materials – List all of the materials you will need to do the activity. Pretend that you are planning an activity for a substitute to do in your classroom. He or she will not be familiar with the activity, so you will have to state everything for them.

5) Procedures – Step-by-step instructions for doing the activity. Also include how many children will be doing the activity with you. These should always be for a center or small group of children (ex-5 preschoolers, 3 toddlers). Be sure to include what THE CHILDREN will do in the activity. Watching you do an activity is not an open-ended activity for the children. Again, think of that substitute. If you don’t tell him or her the procedures, your goal for the activity may not be accomplished. Write down everything! (Crafts are not acceptable for this Key Assessment)

6) Higher Level Questioning- What open ended questions will you ask the children to encourage them to think about their activity and guide them toward meeting the standard? What questions can you ask to identify if the goal has been mastered? (minimum of 5)

7) In addition to your 2 plans, you will need to choose one of the plans and focus on an aspect of the activity that you can present in a hands on fashion. Your options for this piece of the Key Assessment are:

**Photos of the activity: For example: if your activity is a game you will need to make the game or an example of it and submit photos along with your submission.  You could also include photos of actual children completing the activity.

Grading Criteria

The attached rubric will be used to grade this assignment.  In addition 20 points will be deducted if the hands on component is not included

Transportation Logistics Management

Supply Chain and Logistic Management

Locate a peer-reviewed article (related to the course content) published within the last 60 days in a peer-reviewed journal from the online library, then present a 2-3 page assessment comprising of a precise and critical evaluation. Do not summarize the article. Evaluate the information presented in the article.  This assignment has many benefits. First, it requires a search of indexing and abstracting databases from the online library to find an article that meets the specified criteria (must be related to the course content). It also emphasizes what a scholarly article is; to discern between scholarly and non-scholarly writing; to condense someone else’s lengthy argument into a concise report; to think critically about what has been read by assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the research; and, thus, to become participants in the discussions regarding the Supply Chain and Logistics profession.

Essay project

Assignment

Before you were enrolled in this course, much of what you knew about Interpersonal Communication may have been learned from personal experience. Before taking this course, your knowledge about IP Comm may have been gathered from our relationships with others, but also comes to us from the media (e.g. television shows and movies) we view on a daily basis.

The goal of this assignment is to choose a popular movie or television show and to explain what lessons we learn about one context of interpersonal communication (e.g. romantic relationships, friendships, etc.) by viewing the medium you have chosen. Furthermore, you will need to identify the  concepts that are demonstrated in this movie or television show with research that supports your conclusion.

You are responsible for selecting a movie or episodes of a current television show (preferably within the last 5-10 years) and deciding on one relationship that you will focus on for this paper. You should also choose a relationship within this medium that you feel demonstrates relevant aspects of interpersonal interaction (e.g. conflict, culture, gender) and theories (e.g. Social Penetration Theory; Communication Accommodation Theory) as discussed in our Reflect and Relate text.

Once you have decided on your movie or television show, you will need to watch the film or specific episode(s) and take notes about the characters, their relationship, the context/environment they are in, and their communication (verbal and nonverbal). As you are watching, be observant of the takeaways or lessons for competent interpersonal communication the average person “learns” without even being aware of them. For an example of one way to approach your paper, see below.

ECO/535 week 6 Apply: Signature Assignment: International Trade Summary

Assignment Content

  1. Promoting international trade is not a zero-sum game. It is a win-win proposition; both parties gain from trade.

    Consider the following:

    • Tariffs are paid by the citizens of the country imposing tariffs, not by the citizens of the country producing the products upon which the tariffs are levied.
    • The term “trade deficits” is a misnomer. Every country’s trade is always in balance.
    • Trade deficits do not mean the US no longer produces anything to export. The US is the world’s second largest manufacturer and the world’s second largest exporter of manufactured goods.
    • Trade deficits reflect a strong economy. Trade deficits rise during economic expansions and fall during economic contractions. Unemployment falls as trade deficits rise and rises as trade deficits fall.
    • Imports and exports are complements, not competitors. Both are necessary and both contribute to economic growth.
    • Roughly one-third of all US imports and exports is trade between US multinational companies and their overseas subsidiaries.
    • Foreign-owned companies operating in the US number in the thousands and provide directly or indirectly jobs for more than 13 million US workers (roughly, 10% of the US workforce).
    • US trade deficit in goods in 2018 (as a % of GDP) was the same as it was 5, 10 and 15 years earlier.
    • The rise in US goods trade deficit with China has not increased the US total goods trade deficit. It has been offset by reduced goods imports from other trading partners.
    • There is a strong correlation between the rise in world trade and:
    • The rise in world GDP
    • The dramatic fall in the world’s extreme poverty rate
    • The rise in world life expectancy
    • For every US manufacturing job lost to trade between 2000 and 2010, seven US jobs were lost to domestic productivity improvements. Those seven jobs cannot be brought back from overseas because they never left the US.
    • Write a 700- to 1,050-word evaluation of credible economists’ unbiased opinions on the benefits, costs, and results of current US trade and tariff policies. Complete the following in your evaluation:
    • Evaluate how US trade policy changes in the last 2 years affect global trade activities by multinational corporations.
    • Discuss credible economists’ opinions on the long-term effects of trade and tariff policies changes in the last 2 years.
    • Explain the effect of recent changes to trade and tariff policies have had on your employer, you, or someone you know.
    • Cite at least 2 academically credible sources.

Format your assignment according to APA guidelines.

Unit 7 Article Critique

Instructions

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019, a new strain of the coronavirus disease was discovered. Also known as COVID-19, this strain of the virus had previously not been identified in humans. A worldwide pandemic ensued as the virus quickly spread across the globe, impacting countless lives, including many individuals in the United States.

In an effort to contain the virus, numerous countries’ leaders encouraged social distancing, which is an infection control strategy aimed to help lessen the spread of a contagious disease. This directive was given by leaders in the United States as well. Two schools of thought emerged. In fact, many people were skeptical about the authenticity of this pandemic due to perplexing and often conflicting messages that were received across social media and news outlets. Therefore, numerous Americans assumed business as usual and maintained their daily living and social rituals. On the other hand, scores of others quickly retreated to their homes, embracing the warning provided by some of the nation’s top infectious disease experts.

This assignment provides you with an opportunity to analyze a real-world, peer-reviewed, psychology journal article that contains research examining the social psychology aspects of motivation and emotion. You will then demonstrate your understanding of the article by relating the research and conclusions contained therein to current events.

Begin by visiting the CSU Online Library to locate and choose a journal article in which motivation and emotion are viewed under the lens of social psychology. The article must be peer-reviewed and should be no older than 7 years.

NOTE: You are not required to locate an article about COVID-19; instead, you must find a peer-reviewed journal article concerning research that specifically examines motivation and emotion. You will then be critiquing the article and framing the research and conclusions presented in the article in the context of how they can be applied to behavior and social psychology during such an event as the COVID-19 pandemic.

A good place to start your search is the PsycARTICLES database or the Academic Search Ultimate database. You can access these databases from the Databases box on the library homepage.

For assistance in locating your article, you may find the following tutorial How to Find Journal Articles helpful. Additionally, you may find this tutorial How to Search in PsycARTICLES useful.

Once you have chosen your article about motivation, emotion, and social psychology, you will write an article critique that addresses the following elements.

  • Explain the research methodology that was used in the study.
  • Discuss social factors that influence people or groups to conform to the actions of others.
  • Indicate how behaviors and motivation are impacted by the presence of others. (How does this apply to COVID-19?)
  • Indicate the structures of the brain that are involved in emotion and motivation. (How could a person’s emotions related to fear drive their behaviors during this pandemic?)
  • Examine the article’s generalizability to various areas of psychology.
  • Why would some people choose to follow the orders to avoid social contact and others allow desire for human interaction to be their driving force?

In addition, your article critique should clearly identify the article’s premise and present an insightful and thorough analysis with strong arguments and evidence. You should present your own informed and substantiated opinion on the article’s content and its relation to social psychology during the COVID-19 pandemic. You should use the textbook as your second source to support your analysis and to supplement any information that is not contained in the journal article.

Your article critique must be a minimum of three pages in length, not including the title and reference pages. All sources used must be properly cited. Your article critique, including all references, must be formatted in APA style.
