How to transition to becoming a supervisor?

When transitioning to a supervisor, the tasks and the responsibilities may be overwhelming at first

It is important to take time and consider the issues that might be involved with the new position, for you and the employees that you supervise.

You should feel free to ask for help in shifting the mental perspective that comes with being a new supervisor.

During the transition period, you need to attend workshops and seminars. The trainings will help you adjust and learn the skills needed in a new position and how to handle difficult situations.

When transitioning from a the worker level to the supervisor level, you are guided by previous supervisor’s who’ve all gone through this transition. During this transition, one of the first things you’ll have to do is attend seminars or workshops tailored to whatever level of supervisory role that you’ll be in or are already in, just like this one you’re all attending right now.

3

What challenges you might face as a new supervisor?

There are several challenges that a new supervisor might face one of them being, doing poorly at their new position.

At first you might struggle with communicating and delegating to your team members. You might have some challenges having authority over your former peers.

It might be challenging at first but as the time passes, you will get accustom to the new role. In addition, the training will help overcome some of the challenges.

Now that you’re a supervisor, you’ll come across some challenges and are expected, by upper management, to be able to remedy the situation at the lowest level possible. Though it may seem very intimidating right now, as time goes by, you’ll gain the experience needed to overcome these challenges and how you do that is by seeking out mentors for guidance and feedback and/or attending workshops or seminars to develop your skills as a supervisor.

4

How to develop skills to be successful as a supervisor?

Improving your supervisor skills is very critical in creating a competitive company. As a supervisor, you need to understand that you are the leading change in your organization.

You need to learn to seek feedback from managers and other supervisors. In addition, you need to attend seminars and workshops to improve your skills as a supervisor.

Becoming a successful supervisor is a process and you learn in the way and adjust accordingly by learning from mistakes and situations.

The most important message that I want you all to take away from this presentation, is that you won’t have all the answers, but, you are expected to seek them out. This is why you were chosen to progress in this company as a supervisor.

5

What makes a good supervisor?

Good and successful supervisors have good integrity. They always strive to do what is right even when it might displease others or even have negative consequences.

They lead by example and show this through their actions. A good supervisor communicates well to his team members, they also interact with their employees more often having a comfortable working environment.

Good and successful supervisors are always true to themselves. They find what skills best suit them and their team to create a successful workplace.

A good supervisor can become a most valuable asset to you and your business, leading by example and setting the tone for the entire team. A first rate leader can pave a pathway to success, whether by hands on running an event or fostering team building and mentoring the wider crew

6

What makes a bad supervisor?

• Ever wondered what makes a bad supervisor? The truth is, is that it’s all to the interpretation of the individual, whether it’s the employee or the supervisor’s supervisor.

• In my experience, how I label a bad supervisor is their accountability. If they can’t hold themselves accountable, how can they hold others accountable to ensure their team is successful?

• • It shouldn’t take a lot from you to be a successful supervisor. If you can’t be your true self, you will find it very difficult to find success. Find what skills and leadership styles best suits you.

Forbes.com published an article called “12 Traits Bad Bosses Have in Common” on 25 September, 2018. It was written by the Young Entrepreneur Council and the opening sentence is “It’s often said that people quit bosses, not jobs.” This is rings very true in every business, from retail to the military.

7

Summary

When transitioning to a supervisor, the tasks and the responsibilities may be at first feel overwhelming.

There are a number of challenges that a new supervisor might face one of them being doing poorly at their job.

Improving your supervisor skills is very critical in creating a competitive company

Good and successful supervisors have good integrity. They always strive to do what is right even when it might displease others or even have negative consequences.

Knowing who to train and mould into an experienced supervisor can be tricky. By taking the time to get to know your employees, what they want out of a career and whether or not they have some supervisor qualities, it can make the job easier. Training more than one supervisor at a time, or allowing younger staff members to ghost supervisors will also assist in ensuring you have skilful and proficient staff.

Hi,
Thanks for sending me your thoughts last week on the diversity issue at the clinic. Your next step is to select a team of professionals who can help you in this project and prepare an introduction of the project for a first meeting with them.
I want you to prepare a presentation to serve as a brief, but substantive introduction for the first meeting with a group of 4–5 members who will participate on the committee tasked with addressing the diversity issue. Once I review more information about the proposed team I can help you with the recruitment. The presentation should be 5–7 minutes and use 6–8 slides with detailed speaker’s notes so I can understand your approach. Not a lot of time or space, so keep things pretty high level. Do the following:
Briefly outline the project goals and highlight 2–3 of the initial priorities to be addressed by the group. Also, explain why they are important.
Explain the composition of the team and why you chose them. Note that you will not know the exact individuals yet, but assume we will recruit the people with the desired qualities and characteristics that you outline in the presentation. Consider the following: Include a group of professionals you believe can help define the problem and ultimately make recommendations on how to address it.
Make sure each member is either trained in, sensitive to, or has experience with the concept of workplace diversity.
Give some thought to having some members from outside the organization.
Provide member profiles: their diversity, qualifications, experience, internal versus external, and so forth.
Explain your role and describe how the committee will work together and achieve effective interprofessional collaboration. Describe how the group will communicate. How and when they will meet.

What are 2 examples of contemporary hunter-gatherer societies?

One of the possible reasons that hunters and gatherers do not work more than they do may be to avoid overexploitation of their environment. Think about this: overhunting might allow people to feast for a few days, but over the long run, the effect would simply be to destroy the local game supplies. Hunters and gatherers also demonstrate less patriarchy and ownership taboos than industrial society members. You will explore these differences in a PowerPoint presentation for this assignment.

Assignment Details

Use this Hunter-Gatherers resource page as a starting point. There, you will find an in-depth examination of the hunter-gatherer society as well as additional sources to explore. Make sure you use and refer to at least two sources in your presentation. Use this template to create a presentation of 10–14 slides, with speaker notes. A title and reference slide should be included. PowerPoint help is available through Tutoring. Be sure cover the following in your presentation:

  • What are 2 examples of contemporary hunter-gatherer societies?
  • How do hunters and gatherers view rights to land?
  • How do hunters and gatherers view rights to property, such as tools or personal possessions?
  • What evidence suggests that hunter-gatherer societies have a conservationist ethic?
  • What can an industrial, modern society learn from hunter-gatherer societies?
