Case Study II – Production Planning

 Overview:

Plato Specialty Chemical Co. decided to expand its portfolio by acquiring Chemco in Middlebury, CT and Aristo in Cary, NC. The effort to bring the two companies together was disastrous as the two companies operated in totally different ways. The following describes how production planning was done at both locations.

Please prepare a 2-page paper indicating which method of planning would be most effective based on what you have learned so far in the course. Please advise which individuals or departments would do a better job. Please provide details to support your answer.

Aristo: This is the responsibility of the Contract Manufacturing Group. All relationships with subcontractors are handled by the Manufacturing Managers. They do all interviews with potential subcontractors and work with Legal to complete the contract document. The Contract Manufacturing Group tracks and updates all costing information so that planners have current costs when issuing purchase orders to subcontractors.

Chemco: All relationships with subcontractors are handled by the one buyer with assistance from the Formulation Group and Supply Managers when necessary. Identifying and qualifying new subcontractors is also included. The buyer works with Legal to complete contract documents. Any potential problems with subcontractor due to lack of materials and/or packaging or delays in production are handled by buyer with assistance from Supply Planners.

Please note that all production is subcontracted. Neither company owns any factories.

Instructions:

•This week’s assignment is to prepare a 2-page paper analyzing the key players in the production planning role. Do you agree with either one of the scenarios above, a combination of both, or a completely different approach?

 1. Are the most knowlegable individuals involved in the process?

 2. Do you feel that the process is over or under staffed?

3. Is there a need to bring in outside consultants?

4. How does the fact that production is outsourced affect production planning?

5. How are unforecasted upsides in production handled with subcontractors?

6. Highlight the importance of supplier relationships when subcontracting.

 • Research an article on an outside company who subcontracts production and explain their organizational roles and responsibilities. Make sure to use an article from your own research that has not already been shared in the course.

• Write 2-3 page paper highlighting questions above along with an article describing the successes of a particular company’s outsourced production planning.

Requirements • Your paper should be at least 2 pages in length not including the reference page.

• Follow APA Guidelines per the Guidelines

5. Many investors and financial analysts believe the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gives a good barometer of the overall stock market. On January 31, 2006, 9 of the 30 stocks making up the DJIA increased in price (The Wall Street Journal, February 1, 2006). On the basis of this fact, a financial analyst claims we can assume that 30% of the stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) went up the same day.

A sample of 75 stocks traded on the NYSE that day showed that 26 went up.

You are conducting a study to see if the proportion of stocks that went up is significantly more than 0.3. You use a significance level of α=0.001α=0.001.

Beta and Capital Budgeting

Part 1: Beta

Visit the following web site or other websites:

Yahoo Finance

1.  Search for the beta of your company (Group Project)

2.  In addition, find the beta of 3 different companies within the same industry as your company (Group Project).

3.  Explain to your classmates what beta means and how it can be used for managerial and/or investment decision

4.  Why do you think the beta of your company (individual project) and those of the 3 companies you found are different from each other? Provide as much information as you can and be specific.

Part 2: Capital Budgeting

Before you respond to Part 2 of discussion 6 review the following information on Capital Budgeting Techniques

Capital Budgeting Decision Methods

CAPITAL BUDGETING (PRINCIPLES & TECHNIQUES)

To avoid damaging its market value, each company must use the correct discount rate to evaluate its projects. Review and discuss the following:

• Compare and contrast the internal rate of return approach to the net present value approach. Which is better? Support your answer with well-reasoned arguments and examples.

• Is the ultimate goal of most companies–maximizing the wealth of the owners for whom the firm is being operated–ethical? Why or why not?

• Why might ethical companies benefit from a lower cost of capital than less ethical companies?

Sustaining Organizational Infrastructure

In order to successfully introduce change in an organization, it requires effective leadership by way of planning, organizing, directing and controlling the management of change. In the ever changing environment of health care, organizations are adopting a framework to implement change as an evolving system.

A model of leadership for change requires a vision, strategy and the development of a culture of empowerment, motivation and organizational citizenship. Model of leadership for sustaining operational infrastructure engages a vision to align employees with a core ideology of their organization. Building a sustainable concept of leadership model may serve as a supporting variable in the creation of an environment which fosters continuous quality improvement. If the process of developing and sustaining an operation infrastructure is going to be successful, the first and foremost importance involves the substantive involvement of top leaders.

Top leaders conceptualize key deliverable functions and align those functions fulling the needs of the key stakeholders and the organization. The functions for a sustainable operational infrastructure include: boundary spanning, forecasting, knowledge management, accountability and corporate design, continuous improvement and operational improvement. The function of sustaining the operational infrastructure process is an approach by which the people, structure, culture and social networks are recombined through the strategic assessment based on strengths and weaknesses. In this process, health care leaders generally find ways to work cooperatively within the organizational system to lead an organizational transformation and evidence-based approach. The ideology behind this approach is to disclose a strategic plan of organizational mission, vision, goals and values to its members to influence organizational citizenship behaviors.

Toyota

Your group will be responsible to conduct a research project on cost accounting issues that are covered in this class. You can choose either a manufacturing or non-manufacturing company. This project is intended to give you familiarity with how managerial accounting systems operate in organizations and it will also help you to develop research skills.

Here are some guidelines for conducting your research:

1. Select a company of your choice ( Toyota ) and research the following information:

The names of its founders, background, history, main products or services, major events influencing the company’s operations, any new products or services, what factors impact the cost of the company’s products or services, the effects of major lawsuits on the company’s operations, current political and economic events that may affect the company’s operations, financial performance over the past three to five years, short and long-term plans, expectations of future performance, major competitors, etc. Also look for similar information about the industry. You may find the above information on the following sites: Yahoo, MSN, Google, or other Internet sites.

2. Explain whether the company is using job costing or process costing. Remember that some companies may use a combination of the two costing systems.

3. Review the advantages and disadvantages of Activity Based Costing in the textbook. Explain whether your company will benefit from the use of ABC costing. What advantages and disadvantages do you find with the application of ABC costing in this company? Describe both the Activity Based Costing and Activity Based Management.

4. Explain the main components of the company’s operations. Is this a manufacturing, merchandising, or service company? What are the main raw materials used by the company? Explain whether your company is a good candidate for standard costing. Describe the benefits of standard costing to your company from the standpoint of pricing products or services, performance evaluation, and financial reporting.

Written Report:

You are required to submit a written report per group (prepared in Microsoft Word, over 14 pages in length; double-spaced with font size of 12). Your writing should be original and free from plagiarism (referring to the University Catalog’s section on Academic Honesty). If you find useful information in an article or web site and you use it in some form in your paper, indicate where you got the information from by using quotations and proper references. Use of reference material and citations are expected in a research paper.

The report should be divided into appropriate sections by using proper headings (e.g., Introduction, Company Background, Financial Performance, Products or Services, Costing System Analysis, Conclusion). The final copy of the report should have page numbers with a Table of Contents and Bibliography. Charts and tables summarizing your findings may also be included as appendices in your report.

take home essay 2

Please choose one of the 2 options from below to write and essay. an essay should be about 300 words or more is fine. Avoid using quotations from secondary sources in your paper–as much as possible, everything should be described in your own words. If need be, you can quote short phrases but from primary texts only. So for example, you can quote a phrase from Descartes’ own writings (as quoted by Soccio) but not Soccio’s description of or commentary on Descartes.

Question C: Write an essay in which you explain how Immanuel Kant responds to David Hume’s epistemological concerns (how he is influenced by him) while also moving definitively beyond Hume’s radical skepticism. In doing so, make sure to explain the “transcendental” structure of his metaphysical ideas. Lastly, state if you are more sympathetic to Hume or Kant (or neither) and explain why.

Question D: Soccio discusses Jean-Paul Sartre as an example of a “public philosopher”. Begin by describing how Jean-Paul Sartre weaves together the concepts of freedom and responsibility (for Sartre these must always be thought together) and explain how these ideas shape his larger critique of modern society and/or his vision of philosophy as a way of life.  Then, finally, compare and contrast Sartre’s philosophical approach with that of Socrates. Make sure to clear describe at least major commonality in their understandings of the role of philosophy as well as one major difference.

Learning activitiy

Illness, chronic disease, and death are issues even children have to face. In Chapter 10 of your text, you will be learning about some of the ways health teachers can address crises and critical issues. For your final paper/project you will be choosing one topic from Chapter 10 to focus on for creating a learning unit for a specific grade level. For this assignment, you will be completing the worksheets found on pages 341-344 of your text. In addition to completing the worksheets, you will also complete a demonstration piece and write a formal reflective paper as you have done on the previous LAs.

Note – the worksheet focuses on suicide and death; however, you are welcome to cover other topics covered within the chapter such as self-harm, terminal illness, and disasters.

This assignment

  1. Lesson Planning Worksheets pages 341-344 (I’ve included a copy of the worksheet above). Choose a topic from Chapter 10 for a specific  K-12 grade level. Complete the lesson planning worksheets found in chapter 10.
  2. Teaching demonstration. Pick one teaching element and create a demonstration of how you would carry out this element in your classroom. You may choose to create an activity you would do with your class, a teaching and learning activity to prepare students for an activity, or an assessment or you may create an assessment that will tell you if the children met a specific learning outcome.
  3. Reflective Paper The paper is required to be written in formal APA style. In this paper, you will be describing your practical and creative process for creating the IPW.

1. Instruction Plan Worksheet:  Complete the worksheets for a specific topic taken from chapter 10. You may wish to review chapter 2 for specific information on what you need to consider and how to fill out these worksheets.

2. Demonstration: Use your creativity for this section! You have the option to either create a demonstration of how you would teach your IPW or what a product/learning outcome, assessment, product, etc would look like from your IPW. Here are some examples of what I mean:

  • Create a short (1-2 minute) video of you teaching some portion of your IPW
  • Create a PowerPoint with pictures of you teaching or with you talking through the lesson.
  • Do the activity in your IPW yourself and upload an image of what is produced — for example, if you had children build a food pyramid out of images of food cut out from ads in a newspaper, you would actually do this yourself, take a picture of your food clips pyramid and upload the image along with your IPW and your paper. Provide instructions for how to both do and teach the activity.
  • You may also come up with something on your own that covers either you demonstrating what you would do, showing something you would create, or creating something you would have students do.

Remember — this section is for you to try things out and experiment — This section is deliberately designed to be very open and creative — I want you to play and experiment with what you might actually do in a classroom someday!

3. Reflective Paper – Formal Writing/APA required: This is the “meta-cognitive” portion of your learning activity. In this paper, I want you to talk about your creative process for coming up with the activities, objectives, and assessments for your IPW. In this paper, you will also talk about how you used resources from the class, your text, your interview — anything you have done to date. You may also talk about what you found through your own research and how you used this information to build your IPW. Here are some areas to include in your paper:

  • Describe your creative thought process for completing the IPW. How do you visualize what was going to happen in the classroom? What will you be doing as a teacher? Why did you choose the materials, activities, and assessments you chose, etc.
  • Describe your creative thought process for engaging and including parents in the teaching and learning process. What research did you need to do for this section? What pre-teaching might you need to do? How will you go about seeking input from parents and including them in the lesson?
  • What challenges do you anticipate encountering for teaching these subjects? Why do you suspect there will be challenges and how will you meet these challenges?
  • What do you need to do to mentally and emotionally prepare for this lesson?
  • What information did you gather to use for this lesson? Why did you choose this particular information? How did you use the information and resources you found? (specific citations, references, and examples are expected to be included)
  • Talk about the assessment you chose — how will this assessment tell you if your students actually achieved the learning objective you set for them?
  • How useful was this assignment? Is there anything you would do to design this assignment differently that would have deepened your learning?

CCIS 21 Art Final Paper (TWice

The Final Paper is worth 200 points. You are required to visit a reputable art museum in your area and select a work of art to discuss and critique in a formal, iconographic, and historical context. Your grade will be based on the depth of your analysis of the subject.

About art criticism

The process of art criticism involves description, formal analysis, interpretation and evaluation. The first step is to describe what you see. Include facts, such as the artists name, the media, size of the piece, and where it is located. Next, analyze. Look at how all the parts of the piece work together. What visual elements and principles of design did the creator use? Subjectively interpret what the content is, taking style into account. Finally, interpret and evaluate the work of art being studied; what do you think the artist’s intentions were? What is being communicated? Does it have value? Can you recognize the aesthetic quality in the work? Include biographical and/or historical information. Evaluation can be a very challenging part of art criticism and requires practice and careful seeing.

Requirements

Select a museum

First, select a major museum in your area. A listing of some approved museums may be found at the following site: Art Museums Worldwide opens in a new window. If you live in a more rural area or are military and stationed overseas where you cannot visit a museum, contact the instructor to discuss options. An online museum visit may be necessary. However, in-person museum experiences will be prioritized. If the museum you’d like to visit is not on the list, you must get instructor approval.

If a virtual museum is necessary, you may find listings at the following site: Arts and Culture opens in a new window

Select a work of art

The following outline is suggested, but not required:

  • Identification: Select a work of art. You may select a piece that you like or dislike. Get all the information provided: artist, title, medium, year, etc. Write down your initial responses. How do you respond to the work? Does it invoke an emotional response? What do you think the artist was trying to communicate? It is helpful to bring a notebook to record your responses.
  • Describe the piece and review it carefully. What do you see? Note all the details about the work. How would you describe it to someone you were talking to on the phone who can’t see it?
  • Analyze the visual elements and design principles, thinking about the relationship between form, content, and subject matter. This will be helpful in your ‘interpretation’ of the work. Consider context: does it fit into a movement or time period? Consider its place in the artist’s overall output.
  • Interpretation Follow your analysis with a subjective interpretation of the meaning of the work. How does the work make you feel? What do you think the content is? Go beyond “I like it” or “I don’t like it.”
  • Research the artist. Historical and biographical information on the artist often provides clues into a work’s intended meaning. Carefully consider the purpose and context of the piece. Did the piece you selected have any particular political or cultural message? Was the artist making a statement?
  • Evaluate What do you think the artist’s intentions were? Was this communicated? Does it have value? Can you recognize the aesthetic quality in the work?

Format Requirements

The paper must be 1500 words, double-spaced, 10- or 12-point type, with 1” margins. The title page, images, and reference/bibliography page do not count toward the required length of paper. The preferred format to complete the Final Paper is Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx). If these formats are not available, other acceptable formats are ASCII (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), and Open Office (.odt), and PDF. Make sure you proofread your papers for incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other errors.

A minimum of four sources is required. Research can come from the Internet (reputable, academic sources only) scholarly articles (JSTOR, for example), books on art history, politics, etc.. Sources should be varied and academic and/or professional in nature. Your textbook cannot be one of the four minimum sources but can be included.

Anything that is not considered common knowledge (information that can be found in at least 4 sources) should be cited. This includes opinions, judgments, little-known facts, and direct quotes. In-text citations (APA) or footnotes and endnotes (CMS) are used to give credit to sources of any material or scholarship borrowed, summarized, or paraphrased. They are intended to refer readers to the exact pages of the works listed in the Reference or Bibliography section.

Citation Sources

Make sure you proofread your papers for issues with grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other errors. If you reference a source other than the text (not required), cite this reference according to the APA or Chicago Manual of Style. The use of any secondary reference without providing citation is plagiarism and will receive a score of 0. Submitting the work of another is also considered plagiarism. Papers are checked for previous submission to the College and for any uncited content. Repeated incidents of plagiarism are reported to the Academic Affairs Office and the student receives an “F “grade in the course.

Phase 2 – Meaningful Outline- Intro to Government Contracting

**Topic Selection:  Contractor Qualifications **

Why I chose this topic: In this paper I will attempt to point out a few deficiencies in how the government

determines what is a “qualified contractor” as well as flaws in the way a project is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful.

Third person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing).  If uncertain how to write in the third person, view this link:  http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/first-second-and-third-person.

Contractions are not used in business writing, so you are expected NOT to use contractions in writing this assignment.

The expectation is that you provide a robust use of the course readings.  No other books besides the course eBook can be used.   When using a source document, the expectation is that the information is cited and referenced with a page or paragraph number.
