Debate 1

  • Debate This: Security Interests
  • Chapter 25, Page 602

Paul Barton owned a small property-management company, doing business as Brighton Homes. In October, Barton went on a spending spree. First, he bought a Bose surround-sound system for his home from KDM Electronics. The next day, he purchased a Wilderness Systems kayak from Outdoor Outfitters, and the day after that he bought a new Toyota 4-Runner financed through Bridgeport Auto. Two weeks later, Barton purchased six new iMac computers for his office, also from KDM Electronics. Barton bought all of these items under installment sales contracts. Six months later, Barton’s property-management business was failing. He could not make the payments due on any of these purchases and thus defaulted on the loans. Using the information presented in the chapter, answer the following questions.

  1. For which of Barton’s purchases (the surround-sound system, the kayak, the 4-Runner, and the six iMacs) would the creditor need to file a financing statement to perfect its security interest?
  2. Suppose that Barton’s contract for the office computers mentioned only the name, Brighton Homes. What would be the consequences if KDM Electronics filed a financing statement that listed only Brighton Homes as the debtor’s name?
  3. Which of these purchases would qualify as a PMSI in consumer goods?
  4. Suppose that after KDM Electronics repossesses the surround-sound system, it decides to keep the system rather than sell it. Can KDM do this under Article 9? Why or why not?

Debate This:
A financing statement that does not have the debtor’s exact name should still be effective because creditors should always be protected when debtors default

Develop Research Questions

Instructions

Your assignment is to draft two or more research questions. These questions can be either qualitative or quantitative or a mixture of both.

Qualitative: Research questions must be aligned with the purpose statement.  Qualitative research questions should be open-ended and reflect the nature of the qualitative design (avoid yes/no and closed-ended questions).

Quantitative: Research questions must be aligned with the purpose statement and should include proposed hypothesis(es). Ensure the research questions and hypothesis(es) are aligned with the purpose statement. The research questions and hypotheses must be directly answerable, specific, and testable based on the data collected.

Hypotheses
(Quantitative/Mixed Studies Only)

Both null hypotheses and alternative hypotheses should be stated. Each must directly correspond with a research question.  Hypotheses must be stated in testable, potentially negatable, form with each variable operationalized.  Note: Each hypothesis represents one distinct testable prediction.  Upon testing, each hypothesis must be entirely supported or entirely negated.

Length: 1 page, not including title page (reference page not required)

Your research questions should be directly aligned with the purpose statement. Your research questions should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards where appropriate. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Effect of changing the process by which insurance claims are approved

The data in the table are from a study conducted by an insurance company to determine the effect of changing the process by which insurance claims are approved. The goal was to improve policyholder satisfaction by expediting the process and eliminating some extraneous approval steps in the process. The response measured was the average time required to approve and mail all claims initiated in a week. The new procedure was tested for 12 weeks, and the results were compared to the process performance for the 12 weeks prior to instituting the change.

Table: Insurance Claim Approval Times (Days)

Use the data in the attached table and submit the answers to the following questions in a Word document:

  1. What was the average effect of the process change? Did the process average increase or decrease, and by how much?
  2. Analyze the data using the regression model y= b0 + b1 x, where y = time to approve and mail a claim (weekly average), x = 0 for the old process, and x = 1 for the new process.
  3. How does this model measure the effect of the process change?
  4. How much did the process performance change on the average? (Hint: Compare the values of b1 and the average of new process performance minus the average of the performance of the old process.)

Research in counseling

The basis of respect for all subjects whether they are diverse in culture, disabled, elderly, young, old etc.  the precept of respect emphasizes the importance of individual autonomy.  In the efforts of research it is the duty of the researcher to honor the choices of a competent individual to exercise their free will having self- determination and to act voluntarily to participate in the scientific research. (making an informed decision about whether or not to participate in a research study) Performing research with individuals with various behaviors or mental disorders can present challenges in terms of the impact on patient’s ability to exhibit autonomy and his/her capacity for decision-making. Clients with mental disabilities for one can or may hinder consenting or the ability in making decisions. Some conditions overt or subtle cognitive functions could interfere with comprehension and understanding that raises questions of competence. (Fulford,& Howsa, 1993). Participants of research that are unable to give consent, the issues with the inability to provide consent can raise problems with the efforts of research.  In most cases mentally disabled clients are vulnerable participants, therefore it is the participants assent, not merely the dissent that must be ordinarily considered valid because in the long run the lack thereof can cause a number of potentially problematic cases in the efforts of research. The one major problem is the client inability to understand. Per the Mental Health act of 1983 and the Code of Practice (21) are silent on the topic of research of these specific parties.  The Royal College of Psychiatrist guidelines suggest that dissenting patients should always be excluded from research whether they are competent or not. (Fulford,& Howsa, 1993). While involuntary mental health treatment is covered by the Mental Health Act, there is a possibility that procedures in research with an incompetent adult (assent or dissenting)  possibly be illegal. Although, “ avoiding such research is not a justified ethical response as it is also the right of all persons to avail of the best treatment, to participate in research and to contribute to the establishment of best treatments. It is untrue and stigmatizing to assume that all psychiatric research “entails greater risk and has less potential benefit than research in other areas of medicine.”(Vaz & Srinivasan, 2014)  It is vital that the researcher be aware that clients that are incapable of meaningful consent, can be because the conventionalities of research are not all one way.  To proceed without consent though can be ethically hazardous.  A good informed consent practice in general is by working with clients that have cognitive impairment and very limited capacity to making decision. In order for the participant to give consent for treatment or research, the formative way to obtain information  is by providing small  and essential information in an easy way to help the participant  understand. This is done by using an iterative process that will help with comprehension and recall. (Vaz & Srinivasan, 2014)  this method has been noted as a good informed consent practice.

I believe it is good standards to follow the three principles of (knowledge, necessity and benefits), including referral to a research ethics committee that can be a procedural safeguard. The researcher should be prepared to deal with any difficulties of valid consenting that may be the result of a client psychopathology. In research the experimental design should incorporate proposals that cover both general communication (use of appropriate language, repetition, a time for questions and answers). The overall process is ethical as well as heuristic affecting the way the client understands the nature of the research procedure, in the long run it may affect the results achieved.

Discussion: Spiritual Development

Furness and Gilligan (2010) stated, “There is a growing body of literature written predominantly for health professionals and more recently for social workers about the importance of developing and incorporating cultural and spiritual sensitivity and awareness in their work with others” (p. 2187). Spirituality, which may or may not include involvement with an established religion, contributes to human diversity and influences human behavior. An individual’s spirituality may be an important factor in his or her social environment. As a social worker, your awareness of a client’s spirituality may help increase your understanding of the client and his or her needs.

Sensitivity to and respect for your client’s spiritual dimension reflects your appreciation of diversity. As you consider the potential impact of your clients’ spirituality on their perspectives and behavior, you must also consider how your spirituality might influence your interactions with a client.

For this Discussion, you consider the impact of spirituality on your interactions with clients.

Post a Discussion in which you explain how considerations about clients’ worldviews, including their spirituality or religious convictions, might affect your interactions with them. Provide at least two specific examples. In addition, explain one way your own spirituality or religious convictions might support your work with a client, and one barrier it might present. Finally, share one strategy for applying an awareness of spirituality to social work practice in general.

Discussion 2: The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy-Making

Word cloud generators have become popular tools for meetings and team-building events. Groups or teams are asked to use these applications to input words they feel best describe their team or their role. A “word cloud” is generated by the application that makes prominent the most-used terms, offering an image of the common thinking among participants of that role.

What types of words would you use to build a nursing word cloud? Empathetic, organized, hard-working, or advocate would all certainly apply. Would you add policy-maker to your list? Do you think it would be a very prominent component of the word cloud?

Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale. When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation.

To Prepare:

  • Revisit the Congress.gov website provided in the Resources and consider the role of RNs and APRNs in policy-making.
  • Reflect on potential opportunities that may exist for RNs and APRNs to participate in the policy-making process.

Discussion assignment:

Post an explanation of at least two opportunities that exist for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy-making. Explain some of the challenges that these opportunities may present and describe how you might overcome these challenges. Finally, recommend two strategies you might make to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy-making. Be specific and provide examples.

Art/Finalpaper

The Final Paper is worth 200 points. You are required to visit a  reputable art museum in your area and select a work of art to discuss  and critique in a formal, iconographic, and historical context. Your  grade will be based on the depth of your analysis of the subject.

About art criticism

The process of art criticism involves description, formal analysis, interpretation and evaluation. The first step is to describe what you see. Include facts, such as the artists name, the media, size of the piece, and where it is located. Next, analyze.  Look at how all the parts of the piece work together. What visual  elements and principles of design did the creator use? Subjectively  interpret what the content is, taking style into account. Finally, interpret and evaluate  the work of art being studied; what do you think the artist’s  intentions were? What is being communicated? Does it have value? Can you  recognize the aesthetic quality in the work? Include biographical  and/or historical information. Evaluation can be a very challenging part  of art criticism and requires practice and careful seeing.

Requirements

Select a museum

First, select a major museum in your area. A listing of some approved museums may be found at the following site: Art Museums Worldwide  opens in a new window.  If you live in a more rural area or are military and stationed overseas  where you cannot visit a museum, contact the instructor to discuss  options. An online museum visit may be necessary. However, in-person  museum experiences will be prioritized. If the museum you’d like to  visit is not on the list, you must get instructor approval.

If a virtual museum is necessary, you may find listings at the following site:  Arts and Culture  opens in a new window

Select a work of art

The following outline is suggested, but not required:

  • Identification: Select a work of art. You may  select a piece that you like or dislike. Get all the information  provided: artist, title, medium, year, etc. Write down your initial  responses. How do you respond to the work? Does it invoke an emotional  response? What do you think the artist was trying to communicate? It is  helpful to bring a notebook to record your responses.
  • Describe the piece and review it carefully. What do  you see? Note all the details about the work. How would you describe it  to someone you were talking to on the phone who can’t see it?
  • Analyze the visual elements and design principles,  thinking about the relationship between form, content, and subject  matter. This will be helpful in your ‘interpretation’ of the work.  Consider context: does it fit into a movement or time period? Consider  its place in the artist’s overall output.
  • Interpretation Follow your analysis with a  subjective interpretation of the meaning of the work. How does the work  make you feel? What do you think the content is? Go beyond “I like it”  or “I don’t like it.”
  • Research the artist. Historical and biographical  information on the artist often provides clues into a work’s intended  meaning. Carefully consider the purpose and context of the piece. Did  the piece you selected have any particular political or cultural  message? Was the artist making a statement?
  • Evaluate What do you think the artist’s intentions  were? Was this communicated? Does it have value? Can you recognize the  aesthetic quality in the work?

Format Requirements

The paper must be 1500 words, double-spaced, 10- or 12-point type,  with 1” margins. The title page, images, and reference/bibliography page  do not count toward the required length of paper. The preferred format  to complete the Final Paper is Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx). If these  formats are not available, other acceptable formats are ASCII (.txt),  rich text format (.rtf), and Open Office (.odt), and PDF. Make sure you  proofread your papers for incorrect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and  other errors.

A minimum of four sources is required. Research can come from the  Internet (reputable, academic sources only) scholarly articles (JSTOR,  for example), books on art history, politics, etc.. Sources should be  varied and academic and/or professional in nature. Your textbook cannot  be one of the four minimum sources but can be included.

Anything that is not considered common knowledge (information that  can be found in at least 4 sources) should be cited. This includes  opinions, judgments, little-known facts, and direct quotes. In-text  citations (APA) or footnotes and endnotes (CMS) are used to give credit  to sources of any material or scholarship borrowed, summarized, or  paraphrased. They are intended to refer readers to the exact pages of  the works listed in the Reference or Bibliography section.

Citation Sources

Make sure you proofread your papers for issues with grammar,  spelling, punctuation, and other errors. If you reference a source other  than the text (not required), cite this reference according to the APA  or Chicago Manual of Style. The use of any secondary reference without  providing citation is plagiarism and will receive a score of 0.  Submitting the work of another is also considered plagiarism. Papers are  checked for previous submission to the College and for any uncited  content. Repeated incidents of plagiarism are reported to the Academic  Affairs Office and the student receives an “F “grade in the course.

The Final Paper is due at 11:59 pm CT Sunday of Week 7.

Grading Criteria

Refer to the following Final Paper Rubric for further expectations.

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:

  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
  • Reflect on your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment, and consider how the results relate to your leadership traits.
  • Download your Signature Theme Report to submit for this Assignment.

The Assignment (2-3 pages):

Personal Leadership Philosophies

Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:

  • A description of your core values.
  • A personal mission/vision statement.
  • An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
  • A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen.
  • A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Be sure to incorporate your colleagues’ feedback on your CliftonStrengths Assessment from this Module’s Discussion 2.
  • Note: Be sure to attach your Signature Theme Report to your Assignment submission.
