Initial Artifact Analysis

WHAT IS THIS ASSIGNMENT?

The Initial Artifact Analysis assignment asks you to choose a cultural artifact and perform a  close analysis of what it is communicating and how it is communicating it. In 2–3 pages, work to identify the defining elements of your artifact and explain how those parts fit together to  communicate various meanings. Support the claims you make with evidence and connect the  two with clear reasoning. Your artifact must be web-accessible. Please include a Works Cited,  where you provide a citation of your artifact. Your artifact should be the only thing on your  Works Cited page. If you think you need additional sources, check with your instructor.

WHAT ISN’T THIS ASSIGNMENT?

One of the first key moves to make when entering an analytical perspective is to try and  suspend your initial judgments, and turn your focus on observing details and patterns. We are  very good at jumping to evaluate something, looking at a text first as either “good” or “bad.”  Please keep in mind, however, that with this assignment, the objective is not about whether  you agree or disagree with what you find the artifact is communicating. Nor is it about  whether you like or dislike it, or think it should or shouldn’t do something. In fact, the goal is  to practice pressing pause on our evaluative judgments, keeping our concentration squarely  placed on the evidence at hand.

As this is an Initial Artifact Analysis, the objective is not to settle on any central argument.  Committing to one angle of interpretation so early in the analysis could limit your ability to  observe other details of the text, and consider alternate viewpoints. Let’s work to unpack and  understand an artifact’s complexity before taking a position on how it could best be  interpreted.

This assignment emphasizes analysis, the act of breaking something down to its key elements  and determining how those elements work together to create meaning. This means that the  assignment is not just about description and summary. Although description and summary  have important roles in a compelling critical analysis, in this assignment you’re prompted to  engage with specifics and details—moving beyond summary—and pursue possible  interpretations—thereby moving beyond description.

ANY TIPS?

Yes. Work hard in and out of class to 1) understand the characteristics a great artifact; 2) select a  great artifact; and 3) practice the fundamental moves of analysis—again and again.

As a reminder, your Initial Artifact Analysis should include:

  • 12-point font
  • 1″ margins
  • double-spacing
  • insert page numbers with your last name.

Week 4 Assignment – Case Study: Transforming Data Into Information

Overview

The Woodmill Company makes windows and door trim products. The first step in the process is to rip dimension (2 × 8,2 × 10, etc.) lumber into narrower pieces. Currently, the company uses a manual process in which an experienced operator quickly looks at a board and determines what rip widths to use. The decision is based on the knots and defects in the wood.

A company in Oregon has developed an optical scanner that can be used to determine the rip widths. The scanner is programmed to recognize defects and to determine rip widths that will optimize the value of the board. A test run of 100 boards was put through the scanner and the rip widths were identified. However, the boards were not actually ripped. A lumber grader determined the resulting values for each of the 100 boards, assuming that the rips determined by the scanner had been made. Next, the same 100 boards were manually ripped using the normal process. The grader then determined the value for each board after the manual rip process was completed. The resulting data, in the file, Woodmill Data, consists of manual rip values and scanner rip values for each of the 100 boards.

Instructions

You are a process manager at the Woodmill Company tasked with determining if an optical scanner would be beneficial. Write a 4–5 page report to your supervisor (including a cover page and a Source List page) in which you:

  1. Summarize the Woodmill Company’s problem of ripping dimension lumber into narrower pieces.
  2. Develop a frequency distribution for the board values for the scanner and the manual process.
  3. Generate appropriate descriptive statistics for both manual and scanner values.
  4. Analyze the frequency distribution and descriptive statistics for both manual and scanner processes. Use Excel to create your charts.
  5. Determine which process generates more values (manual or scanner).
  6. Evaluate which process has less relative variability, using frequency distribution and descriptive statistics.
  7. Recommend whether the optical scanner is the best option for the company.
  8. Use two sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides

This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. For assistance and information, please refer to the Strayer Writing Standards link in the left-hand menu of your course. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

Movie review

  • Film ResponsePlease respond to the following question in traditional essay format:
In what ways does Bobby succeed or fail in presenting a valid reconstruction of the 1960s?
Your introduction should include a clear, definitive argument. The essential task of this assignment is to take a single position and support it with evidence. Please be mindful not to support both sides of the question. Your introduction should also include the scope of the film. This includes the film’s subject matter, geographical location, time period, and larger ideas.
Two body paragraphs should support the argument in your introduction. They should feature ideas independent of one another, and they must include two textbook citations. — Each body paragraph must include two citations from the primary course textbook (American Promise). — Submissions without textual citations will receive points deductions. See the syllabus update in Blackboard for proper citation format. In short writing assignments, you are encouraged to keep quoted/paraphrased material at a minimum. Quoted material should never outweigh YOUR voice.
Your assignment must be typed and double-spaced. Times New Roman 12-point font is recommended. NO COVER PAGE or title should be used. After typing your name on line 1, please begin typing your essay on the next double-spaced line. Course information, date, and other line entries that simply take up space should NOT be included. Length should be 2-3 pages.
Finally, while there is a ton of information about the film and the historical period to be found online, PLEASE STAY OFF THE INTERNET. If any part of your essay, no matter how small, can be definitively traced to an internet site(s), you will receive a zero.
Your work must be uploaded by Wednesday, April 25, 2:00PM (73057 students) or Thursday, April 26, 12:30PM (73010 students). Late work will not be accepted.
    Writing Tips:
    1. Film titles should be italicized.2. 1960’s is NOT correct. 1960s is correct.3. Do NOT use contractions in formal writing assignments.4. Citations:     A. If you use a quotation from the textbook, “you must cite it like this” (213).     B. If you paraphrase material from the textbook, you must cite it like this (213).

assignment opv 19,21 and 24

Primary Sources: There will be ten (10) Primary Sources that students will read over the class. Each Primary Source will be labeled as OpV # and will require the student to understand each side of a topic, provide a 300 word summary of each side, and then answer the questions at the end of italicized Introduction. Each summary must be original and should refrain from containing any quotes. The answers to the questions should have a location (page 3, second paragraph in the first column) but will not need a direct quote. The goal is to have the students engage directly with individuals from the past and wrestle with their opinions from both sides of a historical Discussion. Each summary will be worth 20 points – 10 OpVs with two summaries per = 20 summaries total for 200 points.

Make sure you are checking your Originality Report for each assignment. This report tells me if there is a concern with parts of your submission related to other students. In other words, you do not want to have a high percentage because it will look like you plagiarized someone else’s work. If you are going to work together on these assignments, make sure that your submission is your voice. This ain’t Math class, so do not copy someone else’s work!

Social Work Process Recording

Background

A process recording is a written tool field education experience students, field instructors, and faculty use to examine the dynamics of social work interactions in time. Process recordings can help in developing and refining interviewing and intervention skills. By conceptualizing and organizing ongoing activities with social work clients, you are able to clarify the purpose of interviews and interventions, identify personal and professional strengths and weaknesses, and improve self-awareness. The process recording is also a useful tool in exploring the interpersonal dynamics and values operating between you and the client system through an analysis of filtering the process used in recording a session.

For this Assignment, you will submit a process recording of your field education experiences specific to this week.

(Agency is a job placement agency for senior citizens and needs to be 2 pages long)==>Assignment

Chapters 9 and 10 in the textbook

Write: Make sure your response addressing the following question is more than 200 words and includes an in-text citation or a brief quote from the reading material where appropriate. You may want to review the Citing Within Your Paper (Links to an external site.) resource from the Ashford Writing Center for proper use of citations.

Why would a company be willing to sell its accounts receivable at a discounted amount (i.e., the amount received from the buyer is less than the recorded amount)? Give at least three reasons and explain why.

Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your classmates by commenting on their posts. Do you agree with your peer’s explanations? Why or why not? Though two replies are the basic expectation for class discussions, for deeper engagement and learning, you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you. Continuing to engage with peers and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with the discussion topics.

Attendance Notification: To meet attendance requirements in this class, you must post to the discussion board at least once every seven days. Completing work in MyAccountingLab does not count as attendance.

Fun home prep #1

GENERAL NOTE:

WHEN REFERRING TO THE BOOK, PLEASE INDICATE EITHER THE PAGE OR THE “LOCATION” IF YOU ARE USING A PDF.

ALSO, PLEASE NOTE THAT “GRAPHIC NOVELS” HAVE PANELS, NOT PARAGRAPHS. SO PLEASE USE THIS SIMPLE NOTATION:

(PAGE/LOCATION, PANEL)

THAT IS, IF YOU WRITE (13, 3), THEN I KNOW YOU ARE LOOKING AT PAGE 13, PANEL 3.

OPTION A: HOW DO WE READ A “PAGE”?: It’s very obvious, right? One simply starts at the upper left-hand corner, reads the top line from left to right, and then continues down to the next line—and repeats the process, sometimes for thousands of lines! Predictable? Sure! Engaging? Maybe… “Graphic texts” do not work in the same way. We’ll be reviewing a HANDOUT about this and discussing various “pages” that are quite unlike traditional prose. Please choose one or two SPECIFIC sequences of panels.

Then explain what you notice about these pages and how they are composed. Please do not just summarize what “happens.” Make sure to try to use some terms from the handout.

OPTION B: CAN A HOUSE BE A CHARACTER?:  As we saw in Gatsby, houses aren’t just places to live in—they are active expressions of people’s dreams and delusions. In Fun Home, the Bechdel house isn’t just something they bought with lots of cash—they created and re-created their home almost from scratch, and the details abound in many chapters. Carefully note and explain the significance of certain details and what they reveal (or conceal) about certain characters. (HINT: Perhaps start with the front and inside covers…)

Please make sure to focus on the precise language (not just “fancy” and so on) that Alison uses while describing Bruce and his house! The WIKI might help here!

Please write a post of at least 250 words about ONE of these OPTIONS. Please make sure to refer to specific scenes. It is worth 4 points. DUE DATE: By midnight on Thursday, May 20th.

Reaction Paper: Problem solving and creativity
