Poster for the movie ‘Black Widow’, artists unknown, digital image, 2021

When I first saw this poster, my attention was drawn to the red light that is very bright, shaped as an hourglass because of how dark the background is. Something else that caught my attention is how big the focal point is in the middle of the poster, showing importance and significance. The people in the back of the focal point, which is black widow, seem to be on her side because their image is bigger and brighter than the people on the bottom.Their faces are being highlighted, especially Black Widow. Their emotions are also shown to be very serious and concentrated.  However, the 6 people on the bottom seem to be her enemies because of how small the artists had made them, it’s like they are living in the shadows, showing their characters as evil. Their emotions seem to be very angry and they all look like they want to take revenge for something that has happened. The title is in a white font, which brought my attention down to the enemies or smaller people because of how much harder it is to recognize and see them.

The usage of color seems to fit in with this movie, such as the color red and black, allowing the audience to feel a certain way before watching this movie. The color red seems to be very bright and important, showing intenseness, anger, revenge, blood, and horror. Because of the significance of the color red, we know that there will be a lot of actions and violence that happen including both sides of the movie, the good and the bad. The black color stands for darkness or sadness, which may foreshadow that someone might die later on or something miserable may occur. The buildings and airplane in the back symbolizes a lot will happen including action and unexpected events that may occur. The two colors that were chosen give off a scary, unexpected feeling.

After analyzing everything on this movie poster, it really gave off a good understanding of what may happen throughout the movie. All these clues of focal point and colors shows that the main character Black Widow is out to be the “hero,” while she has to deal and fight the evil with the help of her friends. Without the dark lighting, shadows of evil, the focal point, and the choices of red and black it would have been harder to tell what the movie was going to be like.

Poster for the movie ‘Hotel Transylvania: Transformania’, Unknown Artist, computer generated image, 2021

The first thing I noticed was the neon purple line that divides the image into a symmetrical shape. Across the line, there are 4 people whose appearances are divided by the line. The bottom person is a mummy on the left and a human on the right, the next person is a zombie on the left and a human on the right, the 3rd person is a vampire on the left and a human o the right, and the last person is a human on the left and a monster on the right. The purple background on the left side and the white background on the right side help the viewer establish the transition made in the piece. There is also a woman on the right side observing the transformation of the 4 people. The neon purple line starts to divide at the bottom of the image as it electrocutes the title ‘Hotel Transylvania’, and adds a glowing ‘Transformania’ title.

The facial expressions of the group are mixed between excited and terrified, giving a sense of pandemonium for the whole piece. The faces in the image are seen very clearly so the viewer can observe the individual opinions of the image. On the top left corner of the image, the image says ‘change can be scary’ which implies that the people in this movie will overcome a significant transition. The glowing word ‘Transformania’ compliment this inference. Also, since the font of ‘Transformania’ is different from ‘Hotel Transylvania’, it makes the implication that this film is a sequel.

After analyzing the symmetrical lines, the expressive faces, and the titles found in the poster, I have a good understanding of what this movie will be like. All of these tools show that the group of people in the movie will either change from monster to human, or human to monster. The expressive faces and the line ‘change can be scary’ show that the film will have comedic pandemonium while trying to adjust to the situation. This makes me believe that the intended audience of this movie is for children. I picked this movie poster because of the contrasting colors that caught my eye. The dark purple on the left side give a dark and haunting feel, while the white background on the right side gives a much happier feel.

Artist Unknown; The Seated Scribe; limestone, rock crystal, magnesite, wood, and copper/arsenic; 4th Dynasty Old Kingdom 2500 B.C.E.; Found in Saqqara

The first thing that caught my attention was how realistic this sculpture is compared to others at this time. When looking at Ancient Egyptian art, many of the statues have lots of clothing articles, which doesn’t give an accurate depiction of the body, unlike the The Seated Scribe. The curves of the man’s stomach as he sits down shows implied lines of fat rolling over the body. At the time, scribes were considered rather high class, which is why he has a large belly. His straight posture yet relaxed shoulders make him seem so real I feel like I could sit in front of him and have a conversation. The details of the face add for more surrealism. Another very impressive factor of this sculpture is the scribe’s symmetry. Everything is the same on each side other than the hands, since one hand is holding papyrus (the paper in Egyptian Time) and an implied pen. The most impressive thing about this painting is the color restoration. Today, the color of Egyptian sculptures often fade away, yet the Seated Scribes’pigment remains almost untarnished. The scribe’s skin tone shows he is often in the sun, and the black pigment in top of his head show a short haircut. The piece is made primarily of limestone other than wooden nipples, and the eyes which were made of countless material. The eyes have crystal which are polished in the front and organic material in the back. There is a copper clip attaching the eyes to the sculpture. The combination of the material allow the eyes to appear extremely lifelike. When the sculpture was discovered in 1850, the base was broken off, which means the identity of the piece is unknown. Today, it resides in The Louvre, which I could hopefully visit one day.

One intriguing detail I learned while researching this piece is that pharaohs, or Egyptian rulers, were considered to be gods. Since there are very few statues in Egypt that are not of pharaohs, it is rare to see a sculpture as casual as The Seated Scribe because gods weren’t depicted that way.

Artist unknown, Egyptian Fragments of a Queen’s Face, yellow jasper, Amarna Period, Egypt

I was very intrigued by this sculpture. It is made out of yellow jasper which is harder than steel. This alone makes me think that the use of a material that is harder than steel signifies the strength that this queen had during her time. It’s almost saddening, in a way, because the top half of her face is gone and it makes me want to know what the rest of it looked like. The amount of detail in her lips makes them look almost realistic. Because her mouth is the only part left of her face, I feel this represents that she was a strong woman who could not be silenced, who stood her ground and did not let anyone take advantage of her. But it’s also hard to know who exactly this queen was. After doing some research with the information that I already had from this piece, I believe this could have been Queen Nefertiti. According to Joshua Mark, “Nefertiti must have wielded more power than any woman in Egypt”. This is what makes me think that because of the power she obtained, her lips in the sculpture signify the power she had during her ruling. An interesting fact about the time period that this sculpture was created is that the people flipped from polytheism (believing in multiple gods) to monotheism (believing in one god).

endocrinology

1. What behavioral observation do the authors make? What question do they investigate regarding this observation? How could you state it as a hypothesis?

2. What is meant by neuroplasticity in general? What is neurotransmitter switching (hint: a citation would be good)? How do these terms relate?

3. The first figure legend includes “Statistical significance *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01, ***p < 0.001 was assessed by two-sided paired t-test (b) or two-sided Welch’s t-test”.
Describe in your own words what is meant by “statistical significance”, and what a t-test is.

4. Briefly summarize figure 2. Part 2c compares observations of runner and non-runner mice. What do you notice about the bar graph? Why do you think it was included?

5. What specific neurotransmitter switching is relevant to this article? What methods are used to look for it? What is the significance of NeuN, c-fos, ChAT, and GAD1?

6. Why do you think the authors were interested in the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN)? What is the role of the PPN understood to be? The researchers further divide this nucleus into two sections – what are they, what do the names mean, and in what ways are they functionally different (don’t just tell me what it says in this paper though).

7. Briefly describe the ChAT-IRES-Cre mouse. What does the AAV-DIO-mRuby2 construct enable researchers to identify? What do they use this ability to do with the experimental mice?

8. The authors use sensitive fluorescence in situ hybridization. What (briefly) is this, and what does it enable them to look at in the mice? What do they find?

9. Having established a correlation between a behavioral phenomenon and a cellular phenotype, what intervention(s) do the authors make? What do you think is the purpose? What are the methods? What is the result of this intervention?

10. What relevance can you envision these findings having to human health?

Ethics Project – Name Your Company

Please take a moment to review the Project introduction. Understanding the entire project formation as a whole will allow you the ability to understand what each portion of the project is asking on a much larger scale. Each of these small project parts are going to inevitably be placed together to complete one cohesive project.

It’s time to begin the course project by “Naming your company.” Choose a company that you are hypothetically creating for the project. This fictitious company needs to be identified by:

  • Name
  • Industry
  • Domestic or International
  • Type of Partnership/Corporation
  • Number of employees
  • Years in business
  • Yearly revenue
  • Any complaints that have been lodged against the company
  • Any other pertinent information you deem necessary

All of this information is going to be fictitious but it is important to have as a foundation for the remainder of the project to be completed.

The overview of your company needs to span in length from 1-2 pages in Word and include all pertinent information about your company. Note: You may also elect to submit a 10-slide PowerPoint presentation with this information.

All of your company information for the remainder of this project is going to be pulled from this initial submission, which must be approved by your faculty member before moving on to subsequent parts. Therefore, if you fail to include pertinent information this week, it will affect your submissions in weeks to come. Please do your due diligence and summarize your company wisely. Your faculty member is available if you need further assistance.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document.

Reflective Exercise

All of us can recall our own extraordinary moments, those moments when we felt that our best self was brought to light, affirmed by others, and put into practice in the world. These memories are seared into our minds as moments or situations in which we have felt alive, true to our deepest selves, and pursuing our full potential as human beings. Over time, we can collect these experiences into a “portrait” of who we are and what we do when we are at our personal best. This “best self portrait” is a resource we can call on to build confidence, to help us make decisions, to be courageous, to prepare and see possibilities for the future, to face challenges, and so much more.

The steps for creating your own Best Self Portrait are below.

  1. Identify three episodes in your life when you were at your very best (approximately 100 words each). Ideally the episodes would come from different aspects of your life such as sports, social life, work, etc. Identify the episodes that stand out for you and then write the story (a paragraph or two) of what happened in each case. In the story, you could describe the context, the role you played, the actions you took, the characteristics you displayed, the results, and the reasons behind your actions. A useful and simple guide to the selection of a “personal best event” could be “When I think about this, it makes me smile a lot” or “When I think about this, I feel very self-fulfilled and proud.”

Here is what a sample story might look like:

“I feel that I have the ability to get people to work together and give all they have to a task. For example, I think of the time my team was working on the design of the new software system. We were getting behind and the stress was building. We began to just focus on getting the task done, not necessarily doing our best work. I was able to remind everyone of our goal and what each of the group was capable of doing. In the end, we did meet the deadline and created a result we could all feel proud of.”

  1. Step back and read the stories you have created as a whole. Taken together, these stories describe your approach to people, challenges, and tasks. Look across the three stories to find common elements that each of your stories share. For example, one commonality might be in the starting process of your three events – in each case, perhaps it was due to your enthusiasm. When you notice a positive behavior or contribution, simply write a line that describes that pattern (i.e., enthusiasm, facilitation, persistence, helpfulness). When you notice a pattern or theme, simply write a line that describes that pattern or theme (i.e., I help people in trying times; I can motivate others; I can see how things fit together). Then combine these observations into a written portrait of 200-300 words. This portrait should include those qualities, values, and characteristics that you believe you exude when you are at your best.

Write a few paragraphs that capture these positive behaviors, contributions, patterns, themes, qualities, values and characteristics. This is your best self portrait.

A sample best self portrait might look like this:

“When I am at my best, I am creative. I am enthusiastic about ideas and I create bold visions. I am an innovative builder who perseveres in the pursuit of the new. I do not waste energy thinking about missed opportunities or past failures. I stay centered and focused on what is possible and important.

I use frameworks and models to help me make sense of complex issues. I can see disparate ideas and integrate them through “yes and” thinking. I often make points others do not readily see. I paint visions and provide new ways for people to see. I use metaphors and stories to do this. I find stories in everyday experiences, and people find it easy to understand them.

In helping others, I try to empathize with them and understand their needs. I give them my attention and energy, but I allow them to be in charge. In exercising influence, I try to enroll people, not force them, in new directions. I help people and groups surface the darkest realities and the most painful conflicts. From these emergent tensions comes the energy for transformation.

  1. You can strengthen your own best self portrait with insights reflected back to you from significant others in your life. Your friends, colleagues, and family members have different perspectives and can offer unique and valuable insights into the ways you add value and make positive contributions.

Share your draft portrait with 2-3 trusted friends, family members, or colleagues and request feedback. It is instructive to learn whether he or she sees your portrait the same or differently than you. Provide a written reflection of around 200 words based on the different perspectives you received.

Create a Risk Probability Matrix Annual Office Picnic

is a display of your knowledge around applying the risk matrix to your risks for your project.

For this assignment, you will need to create a list of at least ten identified risks from your project. After you have completed your list, you will then create a risk matrix to show the probability and impact assessment.

Please use clear if/then statements, as discussed. The if/then statements should cover the risk and the impact on the project. This will help with determining the probability and the impact levels during the assessment.

A template has been provided and the following should be covered for each of the identified ten risks:

  • Risk ID: a number that indicates the risk
  • Risk Statement: a clear if/then statement
  • Probability: The probability the risk will occur (Can use high, medium, low or numeric system).
  • Impact: The impact on the project because of the risk (Can use high, medium, low or numeric system).
  • Overall Score: This is the final ranking score to determine where each risk falls among all other risks.

Once the risks have been assessed, you must prioritize the risks in order of importance. This is helpful in the real world, for the next step and it is an important understanding to have when dealing with risks.

Fundraising Plan

Your assignment is to develop a fundraising activity for your current program. If you are not in a program currently, it is ok to approach the assignment as if you will be in a position of leadership (head coach/athletic director) in the future.             You are to choose a fundraising activity that you have implemented or would want to implement into your program in the future. You should include the following main headings listed below:

  1. Overall budget spreadsheet – Make projections of expenses and revenues and provide a detailed income statement that supports your projections. It should include all revenue, startup costs and day of event expenses, donations, entry fees, concessions, and other money generated for the event.
  2. Logistics – How would the event run? Also, include outside organizations that you would need to use to help run the event. For example if you were running a 5 k, 1/2 marathon, or full marathon you would most likely need an outside company to perform your timing system.
  3. Tracking money – Develop a strategy for keeping track of the money that you would use for this fundraising event.
  4. Sponsorship – Let us know how you would attract sponsors for the event and the reasons why you feel a local sponsor would want to support your event.
  5. Donor follow up – Include in your report how you would follow up with donors for your event.
  6. Closing –  you should include:
  • Clear, accurate description and summary of experience and/or what you learned.
  • Thoughtful analysis and assessment in relation to profession.
  • Personal significance for your future coaching or athletic administration experience.
  1. Sample docs – Optional to include graphic sample flyers, organizers, charts, and graphs to enhance your project.

Evaluation criteria:

  • Paper must include a title page and follow APA guidelines.
  • Paper MUST include specified titles for each section of the paper (a-f listed above)
  • Two (2) references must be included at the end of this assignment.

SOCW 6311 Week 4 Discussion Post – Selection of a Statistical Analysis Approach

Discussion: Selection of a Statistical Analysis Approach

Though data analysis occurs after the study has completed a data collection stage, the researcher needs to have in mind what type of analysis will allow the researcher to obtain an answer to a research question. The researcher must understand the purpose of each method of analysis, the characteristics that must be present in the study for the design to be appropriate and any weaknesses of the design that might limit the usefulness of the study results. Only then can the researcher select the appropriate design. Choosing the appropriate design enables the researcher to claim the data that is potential evidence that provides information about the relationship being studied. Notice that it is not the statistical test which tells us that research is valid, rather, it is the research design. Social workers must be aware of and adjust any limitations of their chosen design that may impact the validity of the study.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the handout, A Short Course in Statistics. If necessary, locate and review online resources concerning internal validity and threats to internal validity. Then, review the “Social Work Research: Chi Square” case study located in this week’s resources. Consider the confounding variables, that is, factors that might explain the difference between those in the program and those waiting to enter the program.

Provide a 300-word Discussion Post:

–  An interpretation of the case study’s conclusion that “the vocational rehabilitation intervention program may be effective at promoting full-time employment.”

– Describe the factors limiting the internal validity of this study

– Explain why those factors limit the ability to draw conclusions regarding cause and effect relationships.

Must contain at least 3 references and citations from the following materials:

Week 4: Data Analysis I

Conducting statistical analysis can prove an intimidating task for some students. However, statistical analysis is the critical component of social work research that can link interventions to client outcomes. Statistical analysis software simplifies the task of the mathematical computations. It is the social worker’s responsibility to choose the proper research design and type of statistical analysis.

This week, you analyze the relationship between study design and statistical analysis in a case study. You also interpret the results of the research from the case study and a SPSS data that will be provided to you.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

  • Interpret the statistical      results in a case study
  • Analyze the relationship      between study design and statistical analyses

Module 2 Discussion – Ethical Decision Making

As an employee in an organization, it may happen that you are faced with a situation that puts your ethics to the test. In order to help prepare you overcome those forces that might prevent you from reaching your ethical leadership potential, I want you to review several of the ethical dilemmas below, which are based upon actual situations employees have found themselves facing.

———————————————————————————————————————————

Quality or Quantity

When Incentives Don’t Match Your Values

Noah Rickling, Hackworth Business Ethics Fellow ‘13

Frank, a recent Santa Clara University graduate, recently landed a sales job for a Silicon Valley tech company. He is part of a team that qualifies sales opportunities. After talking to potential customers, Frank decides whether or not they are quality leads. If they are, he refers them to an account executive (AE) to close the deal, saving the company precious time in money in avoiding low probability contracts. If not, he will not pass them on and the sales opportunity is not pursued. Account executives expect prescreening of potential leads in order to maximize their time. Each referral Frank passes to the AE is added to a tally that counts toward his target monthly total, and there is a monetary bonus for all sales staff members who reach their monthly quota.

This creates some controversy among Frank’s team members, who are faced with conflicting incentives; pass on low quality leads to hit your quota, or focus on quality and risk missing the monthly target.  The pressure to “hit your number” comes from both the monetary incentive and management, who benefit when their sales team hits their quotas. To further complicate matters, since each sales representative self-reports how many leads they passed along, they can inflate their numbers in order to reach the monthly target goal: a common occurrence among Frank’s coworkers.

As Frank tries to adjust to his new job, he is finding it difficult to balance his own moral compass with the pressure of hitting his monthly number.

How would you handle the dilemma between hitting the quota and submitting quality work you stand behind? What factors would weigh into your decision? What solutions would best solve this dilemma?

—————————————————————————————————————————————

After reading several of these mini cases, pick one that interests you and address the following questions and explain.

  • What are the major elements of the situation influencing your thoughts, decisions, and (hypothetical) actions?
  • How would you respond in the situation?
  • Why you chose that response.

If possible, please choose one that has not been posted (or only has a couple posts rather than dozens). Please post your initial response in 250 – 350 words
