RHETORICAL RESEARCH

RHETORICAL RESEARCH 1 (40pts -4% of course grade)

At the start of your research into your Informed Rhetorical Argument  topic, you will write a rhetorical description of an argument that  interests you.

Write a brief, 1-2 page (2 pages maximum), double spaced, 12 point font, rhetorical description of a source[1] that interests you. You should try to find a source that is on the topic/issue which you will pursue for the next seven weeks.

This assignment essentially has three steps.

FIRST: Begin with an MLA formatted Works Cited entry for your source

SECOND: Write one paragraph which  meets the criteria for Rhetorical Precis. The short length and  fill-in-the-blank nature of a précis can be misleading, but don’t be  fooled: it requires time, careful reading, careful thinking, and careful  revising to compose one of these successfully. This paragraph should follow the Rhetorical Precis TemplatePreview the document as exactly as possible.

THIRD: Write one to two paragraphs  which evaluate the effectiveness of the author’s use of the rhetorical  appeals of ethos, logos, pathos and kairos. Would this argument be  compelling/convincing for the intended audience? If yes, what appeals  are functioning most prominently? If not, which appeals are falling  short of their aim? Root your analysis in SPECIFIC moments from your  article, using direct quotations and references as appropriate. Make  sure you link your evaluations explicitly to the rhetorical appeals  which they involve.

FORM: Please download the Rhetorical Precis Template Preview the documentand  fill in the bracketed, highlighted sections as appropriate. When you  insert the appropriate information, please make sure to remove the  brackets and highlighting.

EXPECTATIONS: You will be evaluated on whether or not your Works  Cited citation is formatted properly in MLA format. You will be  evaluated on how thoroughly and concisely your precis articulates the  source’s argument, support, and rhetorical situation. You will also be  evaluated on how well your rhetorical analysis paragraphs evaluate the  article’s effectiveness in using, ethos, logos, pathos, kairos,  depending on its rhetorical situation (audience, author, purpose and  context). Good analytical paragraphs must include  SPECIFIC moments from your article, using direct quotations and  references as appropriate. Make sure you link your evaluations  explicitly to the rhetorical appeals which they involve.

Post number 2

The plea bargain process is a feature of the federal criminal justice system that is essential to making the criminal justice system work efficiently. The defendant is almost always faced with the maximum charges that will be imposed should the case go to trial. Because of this prosecution will offer up the opportunity to plead guilty to lesser charges or reduce the maximum sentence on the original charge. Because of plea bargains it is estimated that only about 1 to 2 percent of cases go to trial.

The two traditional types of plea bargains are charge bargaining and sentencing bargaining. Charge bargaining deals with dismissing or reducing the severity of charges in exchange for the defendant pleading guilty to lesser charges. Sentencing bargaining deals strictly with reducing the amount of time being served based on the defendant’s guilty plea.

The elements that are required for a plea bargain to occur are:

Individuals must submit a guilty plea voluntarily

Charges must have factual basis

Defendants must have the assistance of legal counsel while negotiations occur

Characteristics that play a role in what the plea bargain will be in terms of seriousness include seriousness of the crime, prior criminal record, strength of evidence, and the use of a public or private defender.

The judge’s role in the plea bargain process is generally limited if anything at all. The primary responsibility of the judge is to accept or reject a plea agreement based on the appropriateness of the punishment in relation to the crime.

Based on what I’ve read and learned from the video it would seem that plea bargains are indeed a necessary evil so to speak. Without them the criminal justice system would grind to a halt and with them defendants have a chance to serve reduced sentences. What I do like is that you have the option to go to trial and fight if you choose to do so.

4 page paper (week 10)

Imagine that you are a senior consultant at Practical Health Care Consulting. Your supervisor has instructed you to spend three months at the Caring Angel Hospital to help improve the quality of care, add value to the organization, improve employee morale, design an efficient organizational chart, create a strong team environment, and create the hospital’s competitive advantage. The hospital has traditionally made losses year after year. Furthermore, it is not performing well financially, and the banks are not willing to lend it large sums of money for more effective marketing.

After spending two months within the hospital, you are very happy with your progress, and you think you are capable of acquiring more patient base and expanding the hospital market. However, with a closer look, you notice that your patients are still hopping from one specialized hospital to another in search of various specialized treatments. You also notice that the seats are not comfortable in the waiting area, and the patients continuously show up for appointments on the wrong dates. The nurses and the employees are not smiling during patient conversations, and everyone looks for ways to blame others for failures in the patient treatment process. Everyone seems to work alone and hide what they do from their colleagues.

At the end of the 3-month period, you must provide a report with your recommended strategies designed to help Caring Angel Hospital achieve its goals.

Note: You may create or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Requirements

Write a 4–6 page paper in which you:

  • From a consulting perspective, propose the major steps that Caring Angel Hospital could take to achieve each of the following goals:
    • Improve the quality of care.
    • Add value to the organization.
    • Improve employee morale.
    • Design an efficient organizational chart.
    • Create a strong team environment.
    • Create the hospital’s competitive edge.
  • Recommend one approach that the hospital could use for acquiring a larger market share given the prevailing financial circumstances. Justify your recommendation.
  • Investigate at least two value-added services that Caring Angel Hospital could offer to strengthen its value proposition. Provide at least two examples of the advantages of these value-added services to the hospital.

MICRO BIOLOGY

PART A

Hepatitis C is a chronic liver infection that can be either silent (with no noticeable symptoms) or debilitating. Either way, 80% of infected persons experience continuing liver destruction. Chronic hepatitis C infection is the leading cause of liver transplants in the United States. The virus that causes it is blood borne, and therefore patients who undergo frequent procedures involving transfer of blood are particularly susceptible to infection. Kidney dialysis patients belong to this group. In 2008, a for-profit hemodialysis facility in New York was shut down after nine of its patients were confirmed as having become infected with hepatitis C while undergoing hemodialysis treatments there between 2001 and 2008.

When the investigation was conducted in 2008, investigators found that 20 of the facility’s 162 patients had been documented with hepatitis C infection at the time they began their association with the clinic. All the current patients were then offered hepatitis C testing, to determine how many had acquired hepatitis C during the time they were receiving treatment at the clinic. They were considered positive if enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests showed the presence of antibodies to the hepatitis C virus.

Health officials did not test the workers at the hemodialysis facility for hepatitis C because they did not view them as likely sources of the nine new infections. Why not?

Why do you think patients were tested for antibody to the virus instead of for the presence of the virus itself?
