Project Two Guidelines and Rubric

Scenario

You are a data analyst for a basketball team. You have found a large set of historical data, and are working to analyze and find patterns in the data set. The coach of the team and your management have requested that you perform several hypothesis tests to find the statistical significance of the claims that are being made about your team. This analysis will provide evidence to validate critical claims and get statistically valid findings that will help make key decisions to make the team better in upcoming seasons. You will use the Python programming language to perform statistical analysis and will also need to present a report of your findings to the team’s management. Since the managers are not data analysts, you will need to interpret your findings and describe their practical implications. The managers will use your report to find areas where the team can improve its performance.

Note: This data set has been “cleaned” for the purposes of this assignment.

 Case Study 5.2: California’s High-Speed Rail Project

A goal of the Obama administration has been to promote high-speed rail across the most populous and geographically-dispersed states in the United States. The idea is to adopt more energy-saving initiatives while also helping to improve state’s infrastructure.  It is with this in mind that the Federal Government made billions available to various states in the 2008–2010 budget cycles.  After the Fall, 2010 elections, several states that had elected Republican governors refused the grants, suspicious that this seed money would not be sufficient to pay for what they viewed as unnecessary construction based on over-optimistic expectations of the need for and use of high-speed rail.  One of the states that accepted the money and has moved forward strongly into high-speed rail has been California, which has already begun work on a 65-mile section in the middle of the state, earning the derisive nickname, the “train to nowhere.”  This case details the state’s projections regarding the need for high-speed rail, against the views of infrastructure experts and critics who charge that for a state that is already in a severe budget crisis, this is just the sort of project that makes no sense economically or demographically.

Questions

  1. Assess the benefits and drawbacks of the high-speed rail project. In your opinion, do benefits outweigh drawbacks, or vice versa? Why? Justify your answer.
  2. What are the implications of starting a project based on tenuous projections that may or may not come true 10 years from now?
  3. Could you justify the California high-speed rail project from the perspective of a massive public works initiative? In other words, what other factors enter into the decision of whether to pursue a high-speed rail project? Why are they important?

Case Conceptualization and Transcription

This assignment has two parts, based on the client and recorded role-play from the face-to-face residency. Part 1 is the completed case conceptualization; Part 2 is the transcription analysis. Once completed, you will upload the two separate documents to the assignment area.

Part 1:  Case Conceptualization

Open the Case Conceptualization media piece (linked in the Resources) and complete the information in the online form for the tab titled “Case Conceptualization.” Be certain to review the scoring guide before you begin writing and note that integrating current peer-reviewed literature is required to meet the Distinguished criteria. The selected counseling theory should be consistent with what you applied in your recorded role-play and guide how you frame the treatment goals and interventions selected.

You do not have to complete the plan in one setting; you may save your work and return to the plan as many times as you need to complete your work. This gives you the opportunity to build your case conceptualization in stages. Once you have completed each of the sections, including an APA style reference list, you will create a PDF to be uploaded in the assignment area.

Part 2: Transcription Analysis

For this part of the assignment, you will transcribe a ten-minute segment of the recorded role-play. Use the Transcription Form (linked in Resources) to create your transcript. Be sure to complete all columns in the transcription form. Format the Transcription Form columns as follows:

  • Transcription column: Use a different row for each speaker’s words. Use “CO” for Counselor and “CL” for Client.
  • Clinical Competencies Utilized column: (“What I Did.”) Identify clinical competencies. Competencies may include application of core counseling skills, assessment questions, diagnosis, and theory-based interventions, depending on what is demonstrated in your segment of the counseling. Examples:
    • Reflection of experience.
    • Minimal simple encouragement or simple empathic statement (core counseling skills).
    • Assessment question.
    • Identifying, acknowledging, or reviewing symptoms (link to diagnosis).
    • Other responses that are specific to your chosen theoretical approach.
  • Analysis of Clinical Thinking column: (“What I Was Thinking.”) Analyze your reasoning for your response. Provide a rationale that is based on the client’s statement, your theoretical approach, or both. Identify the theoretical approach by pointing out examples of your use of the model’s main concepts. Examples:
    • “I see Audrey’s difficulty with social situations in part as being due to learned behavior” (link to theory). “Her tendency to generalize her shyness to all areas of her life keeps her from making any progress.”
    • “So, on a scale of 1 to 10, how close to your goal do you see yourself?” (Potential counselor statement in the transcription column). “Here I was using a scaling question from the solution-focused model.”
  • Evaluation of Response column: (“What I Would Do Differently Now.”) Evaluate the effectiveness of your statements and include anything you could do differently. Example:
    • “I think pointing out Audrey’s irrational thinking is important. At the same time, I now think I may be moving the process a bit too quickly. I think an empathic response would have been more effective here. I am basing this on how Audrey responded after I pointed out she was generalizing her negative thinking. I wish I had said __ .”

Requirements

You are expected to meet the following requirements.

  • Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA style and formatting. A title page is not required for the transcription template submission and is not possible for the treatment plan.
  • Number of resources: Minimum of five resources. These resources must be cited in your work and a reference section should be created in the last treatment plan section.

CASE STUDY TREATMENT PLAN

For this assignment, you will further develop a treatment plan for one case study subject that you previously selected from eight possible candidates. The clients in the case studies are ethnically diverse and are struggling with a variety of mental health issues.

During the course of this project you will:

  • Evaluate client information.
  • Review possible assessment techniques.
  • Offer a diagnostic impression.
  • Review various behavioral and pharmacological treatments.
  • Discuss the legal and ethical ramifications of the disorder and proposed treatments.
  • Review the impact of diversity issues on various disorders and their treatments.
  • Develop a suggested treatment plan for the client.

CLIENT CASE

Hafsa is a 24-year-old Muslim woman. She was able to relocate to the United States when she was 18. She has been living on her own, taking college courses and working since that time. Recently, her family has been able to come to the United States and they have joined her. Her family is having trouble assimilating in the U.S. They expect Hafsa to work and support them, to always be available to take them where they want to go, and to serve as an interpreter, etcetera. Since Hafsa has been in the United States, she is less observant of the strict, traditional Muslim guidelines that her family practices (such as observance of holidays, prayers, customs of food, and abstaining from alcohol). This is a constant source of conflict within the family.

Advanced Air Control Quality

As a continuation of our course project due in Unit VII (a Permit by Rule (PBR) Evaluation for Painting Operation Facility), complete the next section—VOC and ES Content per Unit—of your proposal by following the instructions carefully, and then submit your continued draft of your evaluation document into Blackboard for grading.

  1. Closely read the required reading assignment from the textbook and the unit lesson in the study guide, and consider reading the suggested reading.
  2. Open your proposal draft from Unit II, and make any improvements to your draft using your professor’s feedback from the Unit II Mini Project.
  3. Open the Unit III Study Guide, and review the calculations demonstrated and explained (specifically regarding VOC and ES weights per gallon and per unit for our given scenario data). Be sure to use the scenario data instead of the data used in the study guide examples
  4. Make your Unit III work the second level 1 heading, titled “VOC and ES Content per Unit.” Describe the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) implications of VOCs in the work system while pulling from the textbook as well as any other relevant sources that are presented in the unit lesson in the study guide. In your description of the EHS implications of the system, be sure to discuss the natural and anthropomorphic variables causally related to indoor air pollution. Perform and present (not hand-written, but neatly typed) the calculations for both the VOC and ES values (in lbs) in this section of your project.
  5. In your abstract section (page 2 of the document), write one or two sentences that reflect your work for this unit. Remember that we are adding one sentence per unit to reflect our work as we go, with the final abstract length being about 8 to 10 sentences long.

Your narrative and calculations for the VOC and ES content per unit must be presented in at least 200 words (minimum). You are required to use at least one outside source, which may be your textbook. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying APA citations.

Discussion for O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”

Discussion for O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”

An interesting way to see the difference between the modern and postmodern sensibilities is to compare Hemingway’s “Big Two-Hearted River” and O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried.” In Hemingway’s story, the reality of World War I is completely omitted; we only get hints of what Nick experiences from the way Nick describes his fishing trip. The symbols and images of the story all relate to Nick’s repressed memories of the War.

O’Brien’s story, in contrast, overflows with details about the Vietnam conflict and the lifestyle of soldier—to the point where the reader can be overwhelmed. O’Brien uses a very different strategy to tell his narrative: he includes long detailed lists of objects belonging to each soldier. The narrator also directly tells the reader the emotions each soldier possesses (unlike Hemingway who omits such details and revelations). The overarching symbol of the story—“carrying”—has multiple meanings (unlike Hemingway’s story where the symbols all reveal one meaning). In a postmodern text, a symbol’s meaning will be multiple, or will change as the story progresses.

1. Including long lists of items would seem to be an unusual method of telling a war story. How does this unusual method add to the story? As the lists of the soldiers’ possessions continue to grow, how does the symbolic meaning of “carrying” slowly change?  Find two examples and explain.

(Hint: “Carrying” seems to be related to soldier-related equipment and its sheer weight. Then “carrying” transforms into holding onto one’s personal items, so the burden is about maintaining one’s personal identity or one’s connection to home in the midst of war.)

2. O’Brien writes, “[. . .] for all the ambiguities of Vietnam, all the mysteries and unknowns, there was at least the single abiding certainty that they would never be at a loss for things to carry.” For all its brutal, detailed clarity, the story is filled with scenes in which the men struggle with ambiguity and mystery. What is Lt. Cross’s mystery? What are the mysteries that all the soldiers face while fighting in Vietnam? Find two passages in which these mysteries and ambiguities are explored.

(Hint: Find one passage that relates to the mystery that Lt. Cross thinks about. Find another passage to a personal mystery that a different solder carries.)

Program Process and Implementation

Change can take place in many phases and in many aspects of life. A prime example of constant changing is the changes that occur within communities. Communities constantly undergo an array of changes to their way of operating and often times in efforts to achieve a more modern and family friendly environment which can promote growth from the family aspect as well as the business aspect. When looking at a community plan there are timelines that dictate operations and time frame of which things can occur. Coordinating resources are done to ensure the overall plan can be achieved. Tracking progress can be an essential tool to ensure resources are being implemented in accordance with the plan. Using tracking systems, noting successes, and documenting obstacles is a positive to ensure stakeholders and support for the project remains high (Sharma, Chuang, Byrd-Williams, Vandewater, Butte, Hoelscher, 2019).

As the program or plan progresses, the data collected, and accomplishments achieved should be collected and shared to maximize time contributed to the project and the expertise gathered. Often times anonymity is involved in projects and community projects to ensure attention is on the overall goal and not on individuality. There can still be ample data sharing and community involvement without giving out specific information that harms the integrity of remaining anonymous. The biggest reason for sharing with the community and the public is for the constant source of feedback to ensure the project is headed in the right direction; there is also the benefit of others using the project to further their own initiatives which can be beneficial for everyone involved (Sharma, Chuang, Byrd-Williams, Vandewater, Butte, Hoelscher, 2019).

Once the project is nearing completion, look towards the achievements that have occurred along the way and ensure to congratulate everyone involved with the hard work and acknowledge the time and effort being put forth to achieve a community goal. This is also the prime opportunity to ensure the entirety of the plan was followed through and completed as instructed and to reflect on what can be done in the future and what could be done differently to ensure a higher level of efficiency (Lok, Hung, Walsh, Wang, Crawford, 2005).

Program Evaluation

Evaluation is the last phase in the process of program implementation and program effectiveness. Evaluation is an essential step to take but can often be unknowingly woven into every step you’ve taken to get this far without realizing it. Many communities look back to examine and evaluate all of the efforts put into their plan for community improvement to determine if the effort and time was worth the cost. This evaluation is an important step to complete to finish the process (Sharma, Chuang, Byrd-Williams, Vandewater, Butte, Hoelscher, 2019).

Two key factors to determining success while evaluating is defining the criteria for success and establishing the measure of impact. Using these two aspects of definitions of success allows for an objective viewpoint on the totality of the outcome and the process itself. Evaluations should be able to be reflected throughout the process and each phase of change or progress through the plan. Defining what success means can take the form of what success looks like to the community and to those directly involved (Lok, Hung, Walsh, Wang, Crawford, 2005)

By examining all of the data and considering what was reasonable in terms of the time and resources allocated to the project, one can then note the obstacles to success and what policies need to be implemented or which policies were obstructing the pathway to change and success. Change is a constant in nearly all aspects of life and it is an annual process that is on a continuum. Examining, reassessing, and evaluating the end results and the effects of the overall project is key to future success and sustaining the current success that has been achieved (Lok, Hung, Walsh, Wang, Crawford, 2005)
