Our Rising Oceans: Thinking Critically About Climate Change

For  this assignment, you will be learning about how NASA climate scientists  arrive at their conclusions concerning sea level rise and you will have  a chance to consider some consequences of sea level rise. You will also  see how “climate change deniers” generate their claims and learn about  the tactics they use in their attempts to popularize these claims.

These are the topics of the 2015 Vice News Documentary: Our Rising Oceans. Watch the documentary here:

Our Rising Oceans

Read more about climate change here:

NASA: Climate Change

You  have already learned about the nature of inductive reasoning and that  inductive reasoning is the backbone of the scientific method. Some very  savvy thinkers have utilized facts about inductive reasoning to attempt  to sow doubt about scientific claims as they relate to ethical issues.  In the documentary, you hear about the Heritage Foundation and its role  in generating climate change denial. You will also hear that the same  organization helped tobacco companies develop arguments denying that  their products cause cancer. Question 2, below, will address their  tactics. The following two videos will help you to further understand  the “problem of induction” and how it factors into these tactics:

Skepticism: David Hume

The Problem of Induction

For this assignment, answer the following questions fully:

  1. In  “Our Rising Oceans”, you witnessed a conference of “climate change  deniers” at which scientific claims about climate change are called into  question. What are three things that stood out to you about this  conference? Explain.
  2. At  the conference of “climate change deniers”, you heard a speaker state  that “observation claims are not knowledge: they are not universal,  necessary, and certain.” What this speaker is referencing is called the  “problem of induction,” and this problem is simply a fact of inductive  reasoning. In short, if a conclusion depends on our observations rather  than on necessary logical relationships, those conclusions cannot be  guaranteed. Consider the following:
  • “universal” means true in all cases
  • “necessary” means could not be otherwise
  • “certain” means cannot be doubted

With  these things in mind, it should be clear that there is nothing that we  know from experience or observation that is “universal, necessary, and  certain.” But does this mean that nothing we “know” from observation or  experience actually counts as “knowledge?” That would imply that you  don’t “know” whether it is day or night, whether the screen you are  reading this on actually exists, or whether you even have a body at all!  I don’t think, for most of us, that our standard of knowledge is quite  that strict.

Your  supplementary materials above include two YouTube videos that offer  short explanations of the problem of induction for your consideration.  Consider what you have read here and what you saw in these videos. Here,  then, is question 2:

Is the problem of induction sufficient to dismiss scientific claims about climate change? Why or why not?

  1.  In  the documentary, you saw some consequences of climate change that are  already occurring in Bangladesh. What are three things that stood out to  you from that section of the video? Explain what you found significant  about these things.

*One  thing I find interesting is that we are seeing the same sorts of  rejections of scientific claims regarding COVID-19 as we see with  climate change. Maybe you have heard these arguments addressing ethical  issues related to the pandemic. We also see them in debates surrounding  vaccinations.

Qualitative Analysis Part 1

Paper details

In Part 1 of this two-part assignment, you will analyze four interview transcripts by developing a code book and coding the data presented in the transcripts. This will mimic the process and feeling of coding a large study, though on a much smaller scale. The codes and code book you develop will be used in Part 2 of this assignment to identify themes in the four transcripts.

General Requirements Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:

  1. Imagine you are an office manager at a health care facility that includes cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, and urology departments. As the office manager, you have been given the task of creating a newsletter for new and existing patients. The newsletter will inform patients about different body systems, including their structure, function, and different diseases that affect that system. Patients will learn how a disease is diagnosed in a particular system and the type of doctor they would see if they have an ailment within a body system. Create a word document with images. Strive for less than 15% similarity index. I will be assessing. Be sure to also include images. I am not able to accept a shared drive link for the assignment. Do not submit the working table worksheet as your assignment.

CASE STUDY: Active Labor: Susan Wong

Read the following case study and answer the reflective questions. Please provide rationales for your answers. Make sure to provide citations/references for your answers in APA format.

Mrs. Wong, a first-time mother, is admitted to the birthing suite in early labor after spontaneous rupture of membranes at home. She is at 38 weeks of gestation with a history of abnormal alpha-fetoprotein levels at 16 weeks of pregnancy.

She was scheduled for ultrasonography to visualize the fetus to rule out an open spinal defect or Down syndrome, but never followed through. Mrs. Wong and her husband disagreed about what to do (keep or terminate the pregnancy) if the ultrasonography indicated a spinal problem, so they felt they did not want this information.

Reflective Questions

1. As the nurse, what priority data would you collect from this couple to help define relevant

interventions to meet their needs?

2. How can you help this couple if they experience a negative outcome in the birthing suite? What are your personal views on terminating or continuing a pregnancy with a risk of a potential anomaly? What factors may influence your views?

3.With the influence of the recent Human Genome Project and the possibility of predicting open spinal defects earlier in pregnancy, how will maternity care change in the future?

Activity: Thesis Identification (GRADED)

NOTE: This activity will be graded based on completion.

woman considering her paper

The reading this week stresses the importance of thesis statements, so let’s take a moment to determine your thesis statement before you begin building more detail into your argument. You have worked on your intended argument over the course of the term. In this activity, you will work to find your argument and make sure you are putting that argument into a clear, concise thesis statement. Open your Writing Plan to use the work you have done so far to respond to the following questions, which will help you through the process.

Answer the questions below in another Word document to construct a working thesis statement. When you have finished answering the questions, copy and paste your answers into the textbox below and click Submit.

You have not yet completed the activity below.

  1. What is the problem you will be addressing that is connected to your potential field or major?
  2. State your argument that addresses this problem. Remember, your argument may have changed now that you’ve conducted more research.
  3. What is your first reason or keypoint why your audience should be persuaded by your argument? Can it be supported using the research you’ve conducted so far? Briefly identify the research you will use to support this point.
  4. What is your second reason or keypoint why your audience should be persuaded by your argument? Can it be supported using the research you’ve conducted so far? Briefly identify the research you will use to support this point.
  5. What is your third reason or keypoint why your audience should be persuaded by your argument? Can it be supported using the research you’ve conducted so far? Briefly identify the research you will use to support this point.
  6. Now, combine your answers to questions 2-5 to construct a thesis statement. Your thesis statement should be 1-2 sentences long. Begin by stating the position you will argue, and then go on to list the reasons or major points you will write about in the paper to defend that position. To review an example, feel free to look back to the discussion of thesis statements in 5-2.

Case Study:  – 1,300 word

Choose a business having a substantial mobile e-commerce presence and one ideally with which you have had some experience. In  1300-word case analysis, critique the suite of services provided by the business by analyzing the advantages and possible deficiencies of this service. Ideally, if you use the service yourself, use your own personal experiences as data for this analysis, but also indicate how other people might have differing perceptions in regard to the value of these mobile services. Make sure that you use the frameworks and concepts articulated in your readings. Other questions to reflect on in this analysis include the following:

What specific value or customer needs are being served via these mobile services?

Do you find that you value the features offered by these mobile services? Support your position with specific examples.

How might the mobile services of this company be improved? Again, support your argumentation with specific examples.

Postulate how these mobile platforms in this specific company might evolve into what has been termed u-commerce in your readings. What kinds of functionality would be offered? Do you think customers would value such functionality? (if you need to segment potential customer populations please do so).

What ethical issues surround this deployment of mobile commerce?

Must be done in APA format with credible references.

The Capstone change project regarding different ways of CLABSI prevention has great importance in our hospital settings because of our diverse patient population. Some examples are trauma patients, medical and surgical patients who need long-term antibiotics, and cancer patients, pain management among sickle cell patients. All these patients will have central lines, and CLABSI prevention is a challenge for nurses, and our CLABSI rates have never become zero for the last few years.

Therefore, the nursing conference I choose to present my project is the management meeting held once every month. During this meeting, the CNO and all the managers will be present, and it would be an excellent time to inform them about the evidence-based project of CLABSI prevention. And if they agree to implement the different nursing measures, I can guarantee full support from all those nursing managers, making the implementation process much more manageable.

The professional journal I am planning to present my change project is the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON). It is an official publication of the Oncology Nursing Society(ONS). I am a chemo-certified nurse, and I know how difficult for them to keep their line safe and free of infection. CJON provides practical information necessary to care for patients and their families across the cancer continuum and develop publication skills in oncology nurses. The mission of the CJON is to publish clinically relevant, evidence-based content for oncology nurses to use when caring for those affected by cancer. Articles must be clear, concise yet comprehensive, and well-referenced; they should provide practical information, implications for practice and identify patient education resources, if appropriate. CLABI prevention is a relevant subject for oncology patients because they are immunocompromised and are subjected to caught infection faster than regular patients.

One of the journals I would present my work is the Journal of the American Psychiatric Association. This is because my project deals with mental health, and the journal specialized in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental health, behavioral and emotional disorders. Using the journal to publish my research would offer a favorable thing to people searching for such solutions on anxiety disorders. Again, the journal provides a source for a similar challenge that attracts the audience-driven specific nature by a similar need. One healthcare conference I would use to disseminate my capstone project is American Psychiatric Association. This is the main organizational body of professionals who deal with emotional, behavioral, and mental health issues. Presenting to this body will provide a good chance for the project to get professional critics and overall scrutiny of its viability (American Psychiatric Association (n.d.).
