PSMJ Initial Reflection

What is an “Initial Reflection?” It certainly implies that there will be a Final Reflection, and you are correct! There will be a final reflection at the end of the course. Reflective writing is one way for you to see how your knowledge, understanding, and goals evolve over time. This assignment is designed to give you an anchor point for who you are and what you know as you enter this course. You are “reflecting” on what you know – in other words, describing for yourself and me, a little of all the good things in your brain/heart at this point in time. Then, at the end of the course, you will have a similar assignment so you can “reflect” on what has changed and what has not.

Remember this follows the statement in the syllabus describing the journal entries. Here is it pasted for ease as well: – Journaling assignments in this course are a place for informal conversational writing. This “space” in the course is designed to give you the opportunity to apply your learning in a personal way. You may also use the journal space to speak with me privately about questions you may have about the course or about course material you find of special interest. Remember to use the textbox for any communication to me or requesting feedback. Do not post any assignments in the box though. Plan on allotting between 1-2 hours to complete a journal entry.

For this journal entry, you have three options on the formatting list below. We are all different so tend to have different ways we deal with stress, reflect, etc. So choose the option that best fits you! Keep in mind the final reflection at the end of the semester must be done the same way.

So you can do choose ONE of the following formats:

1) Write a minimum of 3 paragraphs (roughly 300-500 words) but you may have more than 3 if you wish in a narrative essay format.

OR

2) Write the paper in question/answer format. This needs to be a minimum of 400-word narrative (that is only counting your writing portion, not the question that is listed portion) or can look at it as a whole with the questions being included so at least 500 – 600 words listing the questions. You should still have an introduction paragraph and a summary paragraph.

OR

3) You also have the option of doing it in video style similar to the way we did the “Intro discussion board assignment” where you are saying the question out loud then answering. This needs to follow the same requirements stated in the writing option.

Whatever option you pick, your writing/video should flow more like a story or the way you would speak in a conversation. The way that I am writing these instructions is an example of the style/tone I’m describing to you.

In your paper/video incorporate  all of the following items:

  1. What do you know about stress in yourself?
  2. What types of stress do you observe in your community?
  3. What are your biggest questions and/or concerns about stress in yourself and in your community? Is there a relationship?
  4. Describe how you handle stress in general.
  5. What would you like to change about the way you handle stress and why?
  6. What resources are you currently aware of that would help you make these changes?
  7. What do you expect to learn in this course?
  8. What would you like to learn in this course?

Evolution, Religion, and Intelligent Design

Many people mistakenly believe that a belief in evolution precludes a belief in God or intelligent design; in other words, some people falsely think that one must be an atheist or agnostic to believe in evolution and the Big Bang. The Catholic Church is one example of a religious institution that has long held the view that evolution and the Big Bang explain ‘how we got here.’ Read the below article from the Catholic Herald, and then answer the following questions: Why do you think so many people are mistaken about the ability to believe in God as well as evolution and the Big Bang? Do you find anything problematic about combining religious and scientific explanations of the universe? Explain.
NB: In this discussion, students often misuse the word ‘theory’, saying things such as “the Big Bang/evolution are ‘just’ theories.” But to say this is a misuse of the word ‘theory’ as it applies to scientific theory. Many people misunderstand the word as it is used in the realm of science, thinking it to mean a guess, a hypothetical, untested idea. However, in science, ‘theory’ means something different. Please read the article below:

“Just a Theory”: 7 Misused Science Words – Scientific American
Article from the Catholic Herald
By Patrick Cusworth October 31, 2014
Pope Francis’s comments on the Big Bang are not revolutionary. Catholic teaching has long professed the likelihood of human evolution
Perhaps it was inevitable that Pope Francis’ comments on the Church’s position on scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolution would cause a stir. In his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope cautioned against the image of God the creator as “a magician, with a magic wand”, arguing that belief in both theories around the beginnings of the universe and the birth of humankind are consistent with the Catholic faith.
“The Big Bang, which is today posited as the origin of the world, does not contradict the divine act of creation; rather, it requires it”, he stated. Similarly, he argued, “evolution of nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation because evolution pre-supposes the creation of beings which evolve.”
Yet despite further murmurings that Pope Francis was beginning (yet another) revolution in Catholic doctrine, it must be pointed out – the Pope’s declaration on either theory has not broken with established Catholic belief in the slightest.
The Big Bang theory, originally hypothesised in 1927 by Jesuit priest and physicist Georges Lemaître, is based on the central proposition that the universe is continually expanding. As a preposition, the universe was originally contained within a single point, in a highly intense state of heat and density. As the universe began to expand it cooled, allowing the formation of subatomic particles, which began a series of physical cosmological processes, which led eventually to the known universe. While this has become the most commonly accepted explanation for the beginnings of the universe, many scientists have previously expressed an instinctive opposition to the notion of a beginning point, since this would represent a question which science could not answer – as Professor Stephen Hawking concluded in his autobiography, “One would have to appeal to religion and the hand of God to determine how the universe started off”.
Turning to Pope Francis’ comments on evolution, Catholic teaching has long professed the likelihood of human evolution – albeit with the proviso that this takes place under the guidance of the Creator, and that special creation of the human soul is performed directly by God. As Pope Pius XII stated in Humani Generis (art. 36): “the teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions… take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter – for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God”.
Pope John Paul II specifically endorsed this position in his own address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1996, declaring that since publication of the latter encyclical, “new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than a hypothesis… The convergence in the results of these independent studies constitutes in itself a significant argument in favour of the theory”.
While it is refreshing to see the Pope’s pronouncements upon matters scientific reaching and being welcomed by individuals not generally well disposed toward the Church, the implicit suggestion that Pope Francis has somehow brought about a radical change in the Vatican worldview is a misleading one. The Church has a centuries-long history of promoting scientific inquiry – long may it continue.

Two part Assignment Research Methods

The Plan

Your project for this course is to design a research project, write about that project, and present the project. This module is all about the design.

To complete this task successfully first work through all learning resource activities:

The Research Project

Let’s begin by looking at the big picture. What do you need to know to complete your project?

Read

  • Planning Your Research Project

Watch

Research Your Topic

Do research on your own about your topic. How do you do this?

  • Look at the Stratford Library
  • Click here to enter the Library Databases.
  • Observe the project problem
  • Visit the location which surrounds your research. Spend some time observing.

This task has 2 parts. You must submit BOTH parts of this assignment for grading.

(1) After watching the LinkedIn Learning Course noted above, create your Design Research plan.

(2) Next, create your literature review. Find at least 5 sources of academic information (references) connected to the work you propose to do and analyse them to show how your research may fill or extend an existing gap. Compare and contrast the sources with each other and with your approach. Remember that you must paraphrase the articles in your own words (appropriately referenced, of course) and synthesise their potential contribution to your research; they should not be presented as a ‘list’ of articles.

Your sources should be from refereed academic journals which will be found in the online library. List your references in a bibliography at the end of your paper, using the APA referencing system.

Submit BOTH your Design Research plan AND your Literature Review for grading.

If you want feedback on your topic, you must submit your drafts by end of Week 3, Sunday 11/01. You can then use my feedback to revise the final task and lesson for submission at the end of Week 2.

Please note that any work submitted in draft format but in the ‘final’ drop box will be graded as a final submission.

Additional Requirements:

  • 12-point Times New Roman; double spaced; and page numbering.
  • Please be sure to answer the entire question(s) to receive maximum credit for this assignment.
  • Use and include information from the weekly course content and outside sources to support the conclusions contained in your submission.
  • Be cognizant of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
  • All sources should be cited in proper APA format (in-text citations and a reference list).
  • Submit your work in Word format, NOT as a pdf file.
  • Your attachment should be labeled with your name, the name of this class, and the assignment e.g. Jones – EBM502 – Task 2.

ASSIGNMENT: INTRODUCTION OF NEW DRONE COMPANY

Introduction of New Drone Company

You just created a new start-up company called Universal Drones Inc., because you want to compete in the growing industry of drone navigation systems. VectorCal (as described in the case analysis) is currently the only major company in the field. Your views on VectorCal are that the company charges a lot for their products and take a long time to manufacture them. You feel that your company can be a more efficient version of VectorCal.

Keep in mind: When you are completing this assignment, you should be creating all the necessary assumptions to support your claim of being more efficient.

  • Refer to the rubric for this assignment to become familiar with how your paper will be graded.
  • Refer to scenarios and readings from previous weeks in order to complete this assignment.

You may use the Introduction of New Drone Company Assignment Template [DOCX] to assist with formatting and completing the paper.

    • Critique the pricing method that VectorCal uses to forecast the prices of its products and services when contracting with the government.
    • Discuss the types of pricing analysis methods (Comparison of proposed prices, Comparison of market prices, etc.) that your company will consider when forecasting prices. Provide rationale(s) to support your reasoning.
  4. Cost Considerations
    • Discuss the following costs that your company, Universal Drones, Inc., needs to adhere to during your first year of operations.  Remember to provide a rationale for each of these costs.
      • Semi-variable.
      • Allocated.
      • Indirect costs.
  5. Use at least three quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Unit 2 Abstract

Description:
Summarize a current event topic of Organizing World Trade.  Your current event topic can come from any credible news source (ex: Wall Street Journal, The Economist, New York Times, Bloomberg News, CNN, CSPAN, broadcast news, etc.), but your chosen current event topic must be in the news in the last seven days AND relevant to what you are reading this week. Do NOT use an article from a peer-reviewed journal as your “current event,” even if published within the last year (although you may cite such an article in your abstract to provide further context for the current event topic.) Respond to at least two of your peers’ abstract posts, proceeding just as you would in any discussion forum.Participation Requirements:Consult the grading rubric in the Faculty & Course Info section for the grading criteria.Initial current event summary/abstract post:

  • Create a thread for your abstract identified with your name and current event topic (ex: Anne Smith: Kobe Steel Scandal)
  • Prepare a quality, substantive post that addresses the objectives of the discussion forum and the expectations set forth in the grading rubric
  • Include supportive evidence; such as direct applicable experience and expert sources.
  • Include date and source of current event topic in your summary

Assess Data Warehousing Needs

Consider your Signature Assignment database design, and explore how  you can really bolster its analytic horsepower by including data from  other data sources. They could be publicly available data sources, like  U.S. Census or World Health Organization data, or they may be from new  primary data sources that you create (like a survey) to gather more  variables to help boost the validity of your research design.

For this assignment, you must write a paper explaining the data  warehouse options that would be the best fit to boost your analytic  horsepower.

Your paper should address the following:

  • Summarize the starting schema that you have as your base design, from which you want to add in new data sources.
  • Research several additional new data sources that will bolster your  research and choose a minimum of three that will achieve that objective.  Describe how each new source will add to the analytic horsepower of  your intended output.
  • Establish a new theoretical design for warehousing these new sources  (new star schema perhaps to meet the need of including these new data).
  • Create a new schema of what the additional data sources (1-3 tables  per source) will look like. You may just add the newly proposed tables  to the entity-relationship diagram from your Signature Assignment (there  is no need to create a new database for this; just depict what the new  data schema would look like with the new data sources added in)
  • Conclude with your best choice to store and manage your data and explain your reasons.

Length: 4 pages, not including title page

References: Include a minimum of 2 scholarly resources.

The completed assignment should address all of the assignment  requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate  thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course.

Emotional Intelligence

B.  Evaluate how each of your four core values from part A align or misalign to Alliah’s values and social responsibility.

C.  Evaluate how EI and CI impacts interactions within the Alliah Company by doing the following:

1.  Explain two potential ways the Alliah’s leadership will improve their cultural intelligence by working with a more diverse group of stakeholders.

2.  Explain, with a specific example, how you would overcome a potential challenge that may arise when working with Alliah’s diverse group of stakeholders.

3.  Explain how an aspect of Hofstede’s six-dimensions of culture can help you respectfully communicate with Alliah’s diverse work culture.

D.  Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

E.  Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

When asked to describe my top four core values, I would have to say 1) fairness, 2) honesty, 3) accountability and 4) ethics. I have been in the business for over 30 years and one of the things I use to be told by management is, “It doesn’t matter how you feel or what you believe in, at the end of the day it is about what is in black and white”. My top four core values went against everything that management told me back then.

Fairness-goes back to childhood for me, so this is a core value that has been rooted in me since I can remember. I can recall my grandmother telling me to treat others as I would want to be treated. To understand the true meaning and what goes with it, you would have to be treated unfairly. Whether it was jumping rope as a child with my friends, sharing chores with my siblings or competing for the promotion in a corporate environment, you want the process to be fair, not just for you , but for others as well. This is grounded in everyone as a child, and I ask the question, why would it not be considered a value now?

Honesty-is something that is taken for granted, and not valued as it should be. For me this is crucial to one’s character. I cannot knowingly look at myself in the mirror thinking that not being truthful is okay. I have encountered people who try to dress up dishonesty. This is another one of those core values that people don’t think about or appreciate until someone has been dishonest with you and then and only then you put honesty in that category of core values.

Ethics-is another core value that people dance around and manipulate. Being ethical is not something that comes easy to some people. There is a certain class of people who would do whatever it takes to get to the top, and 4 out of 5 of those individuals lack in ethical morals.

Accountability-is a core value that is important and one that is most personal. When asked why accountability holds personal value, this is the one quality that helps you to grow as a person. I always believe when you hold yourself accountable for the choices you make, you own them; the good, the bad and the ugly. This is what is tied to staying grounded no matter what side of the coin you may be on. In my opinion, it is one of the most important values.

MODULE 4 SLP – MGT 412- LABOR LAW AND UNIONIZATION

Just Cause Termination?

In this SLP assignment, you will prepare an essay based on a true-to-life scenario.

Imagine that you are working in an HRM department of a unionized facility. This is your second job in HRM and you’re first in a union environment. There was a newly filed grievance in your mailbox. It concerned yesterday’s discharge of employee George Klay.

As you get coffee from the empty break room you see a document titled “Using the Seven Tests” laying on the table. Someone left it there. You pick it up, stick it in your binder, and return to your office to look at the grievance form, the labor contract, and the “Using the Seven Tests” article.

The labor contract indicates that employees may not be discharged unless there is just cause. It will fall to the company to demonstrate that there was a “just cause” to discharge Klay.

The paper you found on the break room table was “Using the Seven Tests,” from http://www.ueunion.org/stwd_jstcause.html

Klay’s situation was documented as follows by his supervisor:

Klay operated a machine in Building A. He usually was an average worker but working the past 4 weeks on that machine in Building A he had made lots of mistakes on which products to accept and put in the box and which to reject. The Plant Superintendent came into work in the middle of the night because the supervisor called him. The supervisor checked Klay’s boxes and 6 out of 8 had faulty parts inside. The Superintendent terminated Klay’s employment and walked him out the door.

  • In your paper, discuss the seven tests and how they relate to this situation. What further information will you need to gather?
  • What immediate actions will you need to take concerning this situation? Discuss.
  • Would you be concerned about the “Seven Tests” if you were working in a union-free environment? Why?
  • Are the “Seven Tests” a viable gauge for employers to follow in their employee relations efforts when dealing with employee discipline and terminations? Explain.

Utilizing background materials, library research, and/or other research will help strengthen your response.

Paper length: 2-3 pages, not counting the cover and reference pages.

Digital Tech Work

Directions: Read the scenario below. Identify all computer laws and rules Jennifer has violated. Indicate the consequences Jennifer might encounter for violating each computer law or rule. After you have done so, rewrite Jennifer’s story to include details that would result in her applying proper computer ethics for each situation.

Jennifer is a 17-year-old student who is scheduled to graduate in three months. She decides to plan a party for her graduation and decides to download several of her favorite songs from iTunes. She’s so excited about the music she purchased so she decides to download the songs to a flash drive to share with her friends in advance so that they can practice their dance moves for the party. She wants to invite everyone in her senior class, so she decides to create a flyer to share information about the party. She accessed the Internet to search the World Wide Web to find nice pictures to include on her flyer. She finds several images from the Party Planners Website and decides to use the images to enhance the visual appeal of her flyer.

Jennifer enrolled in Introduction to Digital Technology and learned how to create a website in the Web Design unit. She decides to create a website to include a form to collect contact information from all her friends to create a database. Jennifer has been tutoring several 13-year-old students and wants to invite them to her graduation party. She asks them to complete the survey to share their contact information. It is now one week before final exams and Jennifer is required to compose a report on a topic covered in her Introduction to Digital Technology course. She is exhausted from planning her graduation party and decides to copy and paste information from a website and book she checked out from the library.
