Chapter 24 Journal

This chapter deals with the aftermath of WW2. Find another work that does this – preferably from a non-Western point of view. Or, find a work that seems to be a reaction to the “splitting of the atom” and the age of nuclear power.  Choose a work and include this info in your journal:

  1. Metadata: artist name, title of the work, date(s), place, collection if any, medium, size, any other relevant info to help us understand the work better
  2. Image(s) of the work. Do we need to see multiple views to understand it? If so, include those.
  3. Why should we study it? Reference the text on the post-war era / nuclear era, and other artworks we have studied/discussed. How does your selection engage with the critical conversation from those, and take it further? What is the critical value of your piece? (Here you should take at least 2 paragraphs to 1. Solidify the content in your mind and 2. Prove to me you know it)
  4. Why did you choose it? Your personal aesthetics – why does the piece resonate with you? (Here you should take at least 1 paragraph. Consider addressing visual elements like composition, shape, space, time, color, value, line, texture, focal point, sound, interactivity, material, place, etc.)

Comic Comparison Exercise

Standup is a great medium for thinking about rhetoric. The jokes largely rely on how they are told, which encompasses everything from persona to body language to tone. Think about a comedian like Zach Galifianakis, whose persona is deeply ironic––there are meta jokes/jokes about jokes, absurd characters, etc.––and compare him with a comedian like George Carlin, whose persona employed ranting and frustration and usually turned critique outward, toward those outside of the performance/audience. The relationship between these comedians and their audiences are (were) vastly different––with Carlin the audience is “in” on the joke, but not so much with Galifianakis.

For this assignment, you will watch two comedy specials. There are many to choose from on Netflix, and these full-length specials tend to have a good sample size to work with. There are shorter sources, too, like The Standups on Netflix or some of the shorter Comedy Central specials. Please make sure you are using a whole set and not just clips, as you need to have a holistic understanding of the work. Clips are divorced of context and they are not usually helpful if you have not seen the whole special.

Requirements:

  • 500-700 words, properly formatted (double space, 12pt font)
  • Compares two comedians using examples from two specific standup specials
  • Your writing should discuss things like persona, tone, language, relationship with audience, stage presence, body language, dress, etc. Subject matter is of course relevant––think Pryor’s work about race, Bamford’s work about mental illness and stigma––but don’t look exclusively at subject matter. It is more interesting and critical to look at how a comedian can take something unfunny like misfortune, tragedy, social issues, etc., and make us laugh.
  • Your writing should be comprised of your own ideas. Please do not use secondary sources for this assignment or you will lose points.
  • You need not have an intro/conclusion for this. While I expect your writing to progress logically and to be clearly organized, it is a more informal assignment than the ARP.

Preschool Facility Features

You have recently been promoted to be the director of the newest location of a child care center chain. The board has asked you to provide input as to what the facility should include as the building committee searches for existing buildings and hires architects to design the space for remodel. While the classroom space of the existing centers is good, they lack staff and parent space and you feel the overall traffic flow could be improved. You are asked to provide two lists – one list of necessary features that the building should include or could be added to help narrow the choices of facilities and another list of wanted or desired features that would improve quality and help the board choose between similar sites. Finally, to ensure that they don’t select a site that is unfit, the board would like you to create a third list of facility components or features to avoid.

Create a three-column list to describe the features of the physical space and what should or could be built into it. Be sure to include considerations for traffic flow, space for staff, and space for parents. One column should be titled “Necessary”, the second column titled “Wanted” and the third column “Avoid”.

For your list, explain how this list addresses the issues in the scenario

New Supervisor

Topic: Teaching Effective Supervisor Skills

Instructions: This project requires you to develop a PowerPoint slide presentation for use as a training tool with brand new supervisors! You are in charge of presenting them on information on how to transition from a worker to a supervisor. There is great satisfaction in taking a brand new employee, helping them to develop their Management, Coaching, and Leadership skills, and then watching them excel! With this in mind, your presentation should have a title slide, a body of presentation slides, a conclusions slide and a references slide. You should focus the majority of your presentation (i.e., 8-10 slides) on what challenges a new supervisor may face, what makes a good supervisor (or bad one), and how to transition to becoming a supervisor. Factors to consider in all forms of communication–Who is your audience? What is your message? Are you trying to persuade? Inform?

Here are some guidelines to get you started: You are the Lead Shift Supervisor and are going to brief a small group of newly-promoted team leads with little or no past leadership experience. They have all worked up through the ranks at the Bad Teddy Bear Manufacturing Facility. Your audience ages are anywhere from 25-35 years of age, with various business backgrounds, some with military experience, and some that have been in a little trouble before but now want to move up in the company. Many of them have good friends still “on the line” and will have a struggle adjusting. Have fun with some of the topics and graphics of course!

Use the “notes” feature of PowerPoint to list your talking points on each slide for me to read what you would actually be saying.

Submission Instructions: IMPORTANT! Save and submit your work as a PDF.

The body of your presentation should include at least 8-10 presentation slides, in addition to a title slide, introduction slide(s), and references at the end of your presentation for a total of no more than 15 slides. PowerPoint presentations longer than 15 slides will not be read after the 15th slide. As such, please ensure that all assignment questions are answered within the first 15 slides, as your grade will be based on the first 15 slides received.

Your grade will be based on your ability to follow assignment instructions, research conducted, the effectiveness of the training proposed, critical thinking and analysis, and APA 7th edition format.  Make sure your title and references slides are in proper APA format, and that your properly cite your references – either on the slides or in the Notes.

Please support your ideas, arguments, and opinions with independent research, include at least three (3) supporting references or sources (do NOT use your textbook as one of the three required references, “googled sites”, or encyclopedias, Wikipedia, unknown, undated, or anonymous sources, such as brief articles from websites).  Include a reference slide (i.e., 1-2 slides), and cite all sources properly in the text of each slide, in accordance with the 7th edition of the APA manual.

Helpful Tips

I encourage you to go online to Purdue OWL, or Excelsior OWL, which have writing labs for students. Look up PowerPoint presentations in APA format in the search box. These websites will have helpful tips on best practices. TED talks are also another great source for good information.

I am also attaching some simple-to-read APA resources here, which you may find helpful in this and your future assignments.  It is going to be very important that your assignments are in proper APA format.

HRMT PAPER 1

The Role of Technology in eRecruitment and eSelection

For this assignment, you should focus on the reading material for week 2.

TOPIC: As you are aware, two of the human resources areas affected the most by technology is eRecruitment and eSelection. In this paper, you will address the following:

  1. Describe the factors and key elements found in an eRecruitment/eSelection program.
  2. What are the positives and negatives of eRecruitment and eSelection, making sure you cite some examples.
  3. What is important to understand about the eRecruitment and eSelection process for both the human resources manager and the hiring supervisor.
  4. What are some of the considerations that would be important when making decisions about eRecruiting and eSelection programs and systems.
  5. Identify, discuss, and compare three (3) tools, to include specific providers.

The following will help guide you through the mechanics of the paper:

  • Utilize the APA Style for preparing your paper. An APA sample paper is attached which will also serve as a mini-guide.
  • The “body” of the paper will be no less than 3 pages and no more than 5 pages in length.
  • Your title page, abstract, references, and any attachments are not included in the page count.
  • Your introduction will provide an opportunity to capture the reader’s attention with a “hook.” It also indicates what the paper will be about and how you will approach the topic.
  • Your conclusion will summarize the main idea, ties the main points together neatly for the reader, and ends with a sense of finality. Avoid introducing new ideas in the conclusion.
  • I encourage you use, at a minimum, the word processing software’s grammar and spell check, making the necessary corrections before submitting as punctuation, essay format (thesis, supporting paragraphs with transition and topic sentences, and summary) grammar, and documentation count toward your grade.
