Monitoring Performance

Your boss, the chief executive officer (CEO), realizes that you do not have much practice in this higher level, decision-making process and has asked you to write a memo describing your understanding of how to make important decisions. (You may use either a memo style document or write in APA format. Those that choose the memo style and single space, typically submit one page. APA format typcially yields two pages for this assignment. I do not have a preference. Remember, this assignment is a persuasive document convincing your new boss, the CEO, that you have the wherewithal to successfully transition into this new role.)

Your memo should address the following questions:

Describe at least 3 criteria that would determine whether the manager is making good decisions. What should be done to better assure that you are making a good decision? This is a two part question. Please make sure you answer both and describe your reasoning for your choices.

In the realm of decision making, what are assumptions? Rather than use a dictionary definition, cite several specific assumptions that would go with any real-life decision you have made or have seen made at a company at which you have worked. This too is a two part question. Make sure you provide your definition of ‘assumption’ without using the definition from the dictionary. Second, present two different assumptions. (This is very similar to what we discussed on the discussion board.)

Given the importance of proper assumptions, your boss asked you to assess the accuracy of certain business assumptions and what could you do to test or confirm the credibility of them. The following were major assumptions for each firm: Students love to skip this question. Please don’t. If you do, you will automatically receive 1/3 off of your grade because this is 1 of 3 questions asked in the assignment list. This section is not graded on whether or not you believe the assumptions are correct. Rather, this section is graded on your ability to convince your boss that the reasoning for your assumption is sound. So, take a stance and provide information from your research to support your opinion. Each bullet point should have at least 4 sentences.

An automobile manufacturer’s assumption that the demand for SUVs would continue because gas prices would continue to rise

An airline’s assumption that there was a need for an airline that provided no added amenities

I hope this puts you on the right track for your assignment. Follow the instructions above and you’ll fare well. Good luck!

Discussion 2: Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read Chapters 3, 4, and 5 from Introduction to Juvenile Justice. It is also recommended that you review the upcoming

Week 3 Final Paper Outline assignment (included in attachments)

along with your Week 5 Treatment Versus Punishment: That Is the Question! Final Paper instructions.(included in attachments)

An Annotated Bibliography (Links to an external site.) https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/annotated-bibliography is a great way to organize your research and prepare you for completing the Final Paper Outline in Week 3 and your Final Paper in Week 5. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to find, summarize, and critique scholarly and/or credible sources that you will use to complete your Final Paper. You will also use the information gained from the required readings this week to complete this assignment.

The Final Paper requires you to identify resources that will support your argument of whether treatment, punishment, or a combination of both treatment and punishment are most effective in reducing juvenile crime rates and recidivism. Like the Final Paper due in Week 5, this assignment will focus on analyzing some of the research in targeted areas of juvenile criminal behavior.

In your Annotated Bibliography, identify at least five scholarly and/or credible sources, which includes the source you are reviewing, two sources that support or contradict the initial article, and any other sources that support your analysis in the Week 5 paper, which calls for you to:

  • Explain the differences between treatment and punishment concepts.
  • Evaluate types of treatment and types of punishment options for violent and non-violent juvenile crimes.
  • Examine the research as to whether treatment, punishment, or a combination of both (treatment and punishment) is most effective for reducing recidivism in juvenile offenders.
  • Identify the prevailing perspective (treatment, punishment, or combination of both) in your jurisdiction and one other jurisdiction [Note: this may come from a government or other equally credible source].
  • Analyze the research on recidivism rates for each jurisdiction (yours and the other you chose) to determine which has lower recidivism rates.

For each of your critical analyses of your sources for the points listed above,

  • Summarize each source’s thesis and/or main points in one paragraph.
  • Evaluate the relevance of the data used to support the thesis of the source.
  • Briefly critique the accuracy, acceptability, strengths and weaknesses, and overall soundness of the article.
  • Explain, in one to two sentences, how each source supports your thesis and/or resolution.
  • Provide the formal APA reference entry for each source.

The annotated bibliography must be 750 to 1250 words in length, excluding title and reference pages, and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly and/or credible sources, which includes the source you are reviewing, two sources that support or contradict the initial article, and any other sources that support your analysis.

The Annotated Bibliography assignment

  • Must be 750 to 1250 words in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA Style (Links to an external site.) as outlined in the Writing Center’s APA Formatting for Microsoft Word (Links to an external site.) resource.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper in bold font
      • Space should appear between the title and the rest of the information on the title page.
    • Student’s name
    • Name of institution (University of Arizona Global Campus)
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Due date
  • Must use at least five scholarly and/or credible sources in addition to the course text.

Week 3/SOC 100

Part I – Participant Observation

Sociologists use research to collect information about society and apply their findings to everyday life in order to better understand the human condition. Sociologists can investigate people in their natural environments by becoming part of their everyday settings to observe and study participants.

Imagine you are a practicing sociologist who is researching the behavior of social groups in social settings.

Conduct a participant observation in a setting where a group of people gathers. Examples of places with groups include malls, grocery stores, libraries, restaurants, coffee shops, parks, schools, employee break rooms, parking lots, pubs, sporting events, or your local neighborhood.

Station yourself in a safe location where you can observe participants for 60 minutes without having to approach or engage the public. You are just observing people, not interacting with them.

Use the Field Study Observation Template to collect field notes on the following data about the individuals in your observation, as you perceive it:

  • Gender/sex
  • Race/ethnicity
  • Age

(Your numbers do not need to be exact, but try to make them as accurate as possible. You do not need to submit these notes with your assignment—they are only for you to reference to guide your observation.)

Part II – Reflection Report

Write a 525- to 700-word report about your observation. Include the following information:

1) Setting

  • Describe the setting of your observation, including the location, time of day (morning, midday, afternoon, evening), and weather.

2) Group Dynamics

  • What patterns of group behavior did you observe that may have been influenced by the setting?
  • What patterns of group behavior did you observe based on gender/sex?
  • What patterns of group behavior did you observe based on race/ethnicity?
  • What patterns of group behavior did you observe based on age?
  • Which cultural norms did you observe among your participants? Explain your answer in several sentences using at least one example.
  • What did you observe overall about the group dynamics of your participants? Explain your answer in several sentences using at least one example.
  • What social or economic factors might have influenced the group dynamics you observed? Explain your answer in several sentences.

3) Real-World Applications

  • Consider how you could use a participant observation exercise in the future to study patterns in other social groups, such as with families, coworkers, or other organizations.
  • Explain how observing social patterns could help your interactions in a group. Give at least one reason why improving your understanding of group dynamics can help you to succeed in culturally diverse environments.

Journal #3

Due date varies based on your spice group (find spice group information through the Course Quick Guide in the Week 0 Module)

The systems and structures that shape cultural norms and our perceptions—and, therefore, that create/shape single stories—do not operate in a vacuum. As our course texts and discussions have shown, structures interact with each other. They are intertwined, so they shape our bodies and experiences simultaneously. Kimberlé Crenshaw explains this deftly and eloquently in her TED Talk through the concept of intersectionality.

Therefore, you must use at least one specific idea from Kimberlé Crenshaw’s TED Talk, bell hooks’s essay, or Audre Lorde’s essay in Women in Culture. The second text you cite must be from the week you’re submitting your journal entry.

Part of analyzing and complicating single stories involves understanding how our world is more complex than the “truth” a single story creates.  For example, in our class we discuss

  • how different identity categories, “isms,” and/or systems of power and privilege are operating at the same time to affect how people perceive us and we perceive ourselves, and
  • how social identity categories are heterogeneous:  there is “difference within” this category (e.g., not all “women” are the same or experience gender in the same way).

Entry Instructions

To start doing this work, entry #3 will explore how multiple systems, structures, and/or social identity categories operate simultaneously to shape identity categories and/or political or social issues. In at least 200 words, you’ll write about how an intersectional approach gives us a more complex— and hopefully more accurate— understanding of the world we live in.

  • You could explore how the intersection of multiple structures affects stereotypes, privileges / disempowers people, or privileges / disempowers communities.
  • You could discuss how an intersectional framework allows us to understand the formation or impact of inequities related to a particular issue or topic (e.g., economic issues, health issues, educational opportunities, how we remember and record history, etc.)
  • You can discuss how you would “apply” an intersectional approach to a specific topic/issue to avoid oppression, injustice, and/or single-story ideas about identity, people, communities, and/or places. In your entry, some examples of what you could focus on are
  • form of injustice (e.g., wage inequality)
  • a topic/concern related to your undergraduate major/minor
  • a strategy used by activists (e.g., changing a law or developing a community garden for a neighborhood)

JD: Week 8: Discussion Question 2

 Discussion 2 – Week 8COLLAPSECounterterrorism Challenges

Efforts to develop new counterterrorism strategies have faced a number of challenges. Some of these challenges are legislative. Laws sometimes prevent the U.S. government from doing some of the things it needs to do to combat terrorism. For example, there are, for very good reasons, limits on the ability of law enforcement agencies to collect information on American citizens. Other counterterrorism challenges can be structural. For instance, it is often difficult for government agencies to share information with one another. This may be the case for a variety of reasons, such as the sensitivity of information and the sheer large number of diverse intelligence organizations.

In addition to legislative and structural challenges, the social and cultural beliefs of a community or nation can hinder counterterrorism efforts. A good example is that of Egypt, which makes aggressive counterterrorism efforts to defeat Al-Qaeda. Despite this, many Egyptian citizens counterbalance these efforts through violence of their own, often in response to governmental corruption in that country.

Post by Day 4 a brief description of at least two counterterrorism challenges. Explain why each is a challenge. Then explain how each challenge might be addressed. Be specific.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapter 8 in the course text Introduction to Homeland Security, the articles “US Counter-Terrorism Options: A Taxonomy” and “National Strategy for Combating Terrorism,” and the NPR podcast “Calls renewed for better U.S. counterterrorism strategies.” This time, focus on counterterrorism challenges.

Review the Chapter 3 video “The Counterinsurgency Strategy – Close Up”. Reflect on the impact that social and cultural barriers have on combating terrorism.
Retrieved from http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/warbriefing/

 With these thoughts in mind:

Identify two counterterrorism challenges and consider why each is a challenge.

Think about how the U.S. government might address the challenges you identified.

First Paper- 2 pages

View the Anne Loehr interview on leadership and entrepreneurship.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhxjDcjsODQ

-After viewing the video, prepare a two-page paper (not including title or reference page) identifying a situation where you found yourself less than motivated to cooperate or be productive. Explain the assigned task or requirement that did not fulfill the WIIFM element. Furthermore, explain what could have been changed to help better motivate you and/or others.

You need to use at least one scholarly source in addition to the textbook, and your paper needs to be formatted using APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center

Second Paper-One page

-There will be two separate topic points for this, half a page for each topic- not including references..

First topic point- half page

Unemployment is one of the most troubling issues facing our economy today. Some say the motivation to solve the problem is lacking on the government’s side, while others argue it is an issue for corporations. Still others suggest exorbitant unemployment benefits incentivize the unemployed to avoid getting a solid job.

  • Review some of these positions by reading the Washington Post and Heritage Foundation articles found below. Decide whom you feel needs the most motivation and explain why.
  • Using the four-step approach below, discuss which actions you would take to fulfill each of the four steps to motivate the group you decide most needs to take action.
  1. Plan the Project
  2. Investigate the strength of each connection possible
  3. Identify appropriate solutions
  4. Decide which problem and solution to tackle and measure results

Firefighters operate as highly effective and united teams when they are in action, which is no doubt a result of the morale-building and leadership of their station captain. Review the Viscuso article discussing seven key tips to building morale in their department. You will notice they all apply to nearly any work environment. Identity which three tips you think are most essential to building employee morale.  As a manager, explain how you would effectively implement them in your own workplace.
