Newborn Screening and Public Health Transformation

Mandatory newborn screening in America has rapidly transformed public health and healthcare through the timeliness of test results.  The newborn screening is typically done 24-48 hours after the baby is born.  The screening is done through a blood test.  The results for those tests take between five and ten days to come back.  Getting the results in an adequate amount of time is vital for improving the overall quality of health of newborns, (Cellucci, 2019).  Faster results mean that physicians can provide treatment for conditions and can start to monitor the baby’s health. One challenge that public health practitioners face is the false-positive test results, (Lipstein, Perrin, Waisbren, & Prosser, 2009).  This is when test results reflect the newborn being positive for a condition but the newborn is negative.  This results in delayed accurate results, frustrated and confused parents, and delayed treatment for any true-positive results. False-positives can occur from infants having a lower or a higher level than the expected range.  Sometimes this happens if the infant has not eaten enough before the screening or if the specimen was exposed to heat. Public Health departments all over the U.S. are urging laboratories to improve testing and creating new/updated technology, (AACC, 2020).

Inappropriate Use of Prescription Drugs and Public Health Impact

Inappropriate use of prescription drugs is very challenging for public health because of a drug overdose and addiction. Sometimes prescription drugs are illegally sold, given to family and/or friends, or even being used when symptoms have subsided. These instances are considered to be inappropriate use of prescription medication.  This can lead to drug addictions, allergic reactions, or dangerous interactions with other medications that are also being used at the same time. All of these possibilities can be detrimental to the health of those inappropriately using the medication.  One important public health response is prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs).  These programs are aimed to protect patients at risk for substance abuse by monitoring and keeping track of controlled substance prescriptions in certain states, (CDC, 2020).  The programs are not established in every state, therefore, extending PDMPs throughout the entire U.S. would be very beneficial.  This way, pharmacies and healthcare providers will have a better understanding of how to treat patients.

My Role as a Public Health Professional

I can personally exercise critical thinking in my future career as a public health professional.  Since my future career will involve certain aspects of sexual health, I will find ways to encourage and implement STD/STI prevention for vulnerable and at-risk communities. For my specific future public health career, the science elements that important to understand would be the structure, function, and growth of STD/STI bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal agents.

Gender and Sexuality

Gender and Sexuality

Sexuality is a powerful socio-political tool and weapon. Discuss how sexual norms and sexual identities intersect with politics and the law, economics and the marketplace and social wellness and disease.

Choose one of the following options for your assignment this week:

Option A:  Gender Crimes

Criminal acts occur against individuals because of gender – some of these are labeled as hate crimes in the U.S. (consider cases of violence against transgendered and homosexual individuals) and others occur across cultures. Choose two other types of “gender crimes” and discuss what these acts reveal about deep-seated cultural values and beliefs. One possibility is to examine bride burning or dowry death in India.

Submit a paper (750-1250 words) that explores gender crimes.  Provide at least three references cited within the text and listed in the references section.

Option B: Gender Interviews

Interview six people of various ages and ask them what various gender terms mean (transsexual, intersex, transgender, etc.). Also ask them what experience they have in this knowledge – do they know someone who uses a non-binary gender designation or are they basing this information on another source? There is a gap between scholarly understandings and pop culture. Summarize your findings into a report.

Submit a copy of the interview questions and your notes of the interviews, along with your written interpretation of the data (750-1250 words).

Option C: Sexual Terminology

Create a survey of sexual identities. Prepare at least ten questions of various types that elicit the understanding that people have of terms such as bisexual, gay, lesbian, homosexual, queer, and LGBT. Then, conduct the survey with at least ten respondents. What patterns can you find? What terms are most and least agreed upon?

Submit a copy of your questionnaire along with the responses from your subjects.  Include your written interpretation of the data (750-1250 words).

LEADERSHIP AND CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

we need to write reply for this DISCUSSION ANSWER just one page

In the 1960s Elisabeth Kubler-Ross developed a model which is known as the classic change curve. Mainly this model defines clear explanations which help to understand the various stages or the levels of emotions. This helps to know about how to change and how to deal with the people’s reaction to a particular situation. For the various organizations knowing about this classic change, the curve helps to understand clearly how the crucial changes must be implemented. If any transitions result with the employees for the changes that have been made by the organization then, in this case, support is needed for the employees by their top management of the organization (Motulsky, & Christopoulos, 2004).

The following are the steps or the stages that were involved with the classic change curve model. The entire process of this model starts with the shock and denial stage, and generally, this stage is considered as the temporary stage. This is the stage in which the people do not consider the things that happen in reality, and they don’t want to believe them. Due to this, the productivity loss may occur, and also the process may cause slowdowns which may be temporary. Anger and depression are considered as the next stage in this process. In the anger stage, the people may involve in shouting on others without having the correct information completely and also some people may involve in blaming the other people. In the depression stage, the people may undergo to anxieties and fear.

Also, some people may take the wrong decisions, such as committing to suicides and putting their lives in danger (Dutton, 2011). This anger and the depression stages is considered as the darker emotion stage of the individuals. The acceptance and integration are considered as the next stage in this process. After the above stages, this stage begins to exist. In the acceptance stage, the change is inevitable, and everyone should accept it. Next is the integration stage in which the individuals concentrate more on their future.

Discussion: Social Change Through Legislation

Discussion: Social Change Through Legislation

The repercussions of addiction are among the most pressing health and social issues worldwide. Although billions of dollars are spent annually in the United States attacking the problem, public policies on funding have yet to be agreed upon and remain controversial. The controversy revolves around which public policies best deter addiction: those that criminalize acts associated with the disorder or those that treat the disorder (Doweiko, 2019).

Given the ever-changing nature of legislation, it is important to stay informed about the most current reforms and public policies that may promote social changes in addiction treatment.

For this Discussion, search the Internet and select current legislation as it relates to reform and social change for the treatment and prevention of addiction. Your search may include the following types of legislation.

· Legislation targeting the criminal aspects of drug abuse

· Legislation targeting prevention of drug abuse from an early age

· Legislation promoting harm-reduction efforts

· Legislation targeting treatment of substance abuse

Consider how federal and state legislation has addressed addiction treatment and prevention. Research, review, and reflect on your professional code of ethics and how social legislation impacts an addiction professional’s ability to adhere to the code.

By Day 4

Post a description of which type of legislation might be the most effective in bringing about lasting social change for the treatment and prevention of addiction and explain why. Explain how social change legislation might support or undermine the professional code of ethics. Finally, explain the potential implications for a helping professional. Support your response using the resources and the current literature.

Book Review on The Tennis Partner by Abraham Verghese

The book review is not a summary. The book review will be two pages in length, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 points.

A book review is not a “book report.” A report is a statement or announcement. By definition, statements do not show through description and examples. They tell. And, frankly, nobody likes to be told anything very much. (Did you like that last sentence? Probably not. Why? Because I was telling you something.)

But we do like to be shown how things work using description and examples. So, how does the book you have chosen to review “work”? What does the author do to construct the book’s meaning? Why should a prospective reader even spend time reading the book you are reviewing? You have to show the potential reader why they would want to read the book — or not!

To review means something rather different than report. Review means to “look at or over again.” And, if you look at the first definitions that appear at the link at the beginning of this paragraph, you can see that a review is a more interesting thing, I think, than a report as you are meant to provide a “critical evaluation.”

(Critical does not mean negative! The more appropriate word might be ” criticism” or ” critique.”)

Criticism is an art. And it is closely aligned with scholarly writing, particularly the type of writing we are meant to be teaching you at the University.

Reading critical reviews is a crucial practice in educated culture.

Well written or composed critical reviews help a person (a reader, a member of an audience, a listener, a viewer) understand the importance and significance of a work, helping them rationalize whether it is worth their time, whether it will expose them to some new way of looking at something.

Capable, competent reviews help a person understand where a work came from, how a work was composed, and what the work amounts to.

Reviews are not vehicles for engaging in ad hominem expressions of opinion. Reviews, and this is really important, always take the work seriously that is under review. This means taking the author or creator seriously, not discounting what they are trying to create or show, but understanding the origin of the work, the method the work uses, and its significance.

What should you be doing in a book (or any other type of) review. Here are some guidelines that I have adapted from the Chronicle of Higher Education:

Introduction

All good pieces of scholarly writing should have an introduction, and book reviews are no exception. Open with a general description of the topic and/or problem addressed by the work in question. Think, if possible, of a hook to draw your readers in. that hook should be about the book (and not anything else).

Summary of argument

Your review should, as concisely as possible, summarize the book’s argument. Even edited collections and textbooks will have particular features intended to make them distinctive in the proverbial marketplace of ideas. What, ultimately, is this book’s reason for being? If there is an identifiable thesis statement, you may consider quoting it directly.

About the author(s)

Some basic biographical information about the author(s) or editor(s) of the book you are reviewing is necessary. Who are they? What are they known for? What particular sorts of qualifications and expertise do they bring to the subject? How might the work you are reviewing fit into a wider research or career trajectory?

Summary of contents.

A reasonably thorough indication of the research methods used (if applicable) and of the range of substantive material covered in the book should be included.

Strength

Identify one particular area in which you think the book does well. This should, ideally, be its single greatest strength as a scholarly work. Usually this would be about the new understanding(s) that the book advances. Every book is an achievement: what type of achievement is it?

Weakness

Identify one particular area in which you think the book could be improved. While this weakness might be related to something you actually believe to be incorrect, it is more likely to be something that the author omitted, or neglected to address in sufficient detail.

Conclusion.

End your review with a concluding statement summarizing the book’s significance. You should also explicitly identify a range of audiences whom you think would appreciate reading or otherwise benefit from the book.

DO NOT USE THE FIRST PERSON, IN ANY FORM
