PAD 501 WEEK 9 DISCUSSION

The proposal summary, also referred to as an executive summary, provides an overview of the full proposal and determines whether the funder will continue to read the full proposal. I like to think of the proposal summary as a trailer and preview of a movie.

Thinking about a proposal as a preview or trailer for the full grant proposal, select another grant proposal from the Examples of Successful Grant Proposals  (one you have not selected previously)( can not use  Kurzweil Educational Systems: ) and focus on the summary.

For the first part of the discussion, provide a response to each of the six questions in Worksheet 10.1: Summary Questionnaire (found in Step 10 in your textbook) using the information found in the summary. Be sure to also identify the specific grant proposal you working from.

Worksheet 10.1 Summary Question

1. What is the identity of the organization and what is the mission?

2. What is the proposed program or project (title, purpose, targeted population)?

3. Why is the proposed program or project important?

4. What will be accomplished by this program or project during the time period of the grant?

5. Why should the organization be the one to do the program or project (credibility statement)?

6. How much will the program or project cost during the grant time period? How much is being requested from the funder?

For the second part of the discussion, based on what you’ve learned from the textbook and after reading some examples of successful grant proposals, what is one piece of advice you give on writing the summary to someone who is writing their first grant?

Questions for the Opening Vignette

  1. What problem did customer service cancellation pose to AT’s business survival?
  2. Identify and explain the technical hurdles presented by the nature and characteristics of AT’s data.
  3. What is sessionizing? Why was it necessary for AT to sessionize its data?
  4. Research other studies where customer churn models have been employed. What types of variables were used in those studies? How is this vignette different?
  5. Besides Teradata Vantage, identify other popular Big Data analytics platforms that could handle the analysis described in the preceding case.

Please read below to answer the question for the opening Vignette

A telecom company (named Access Telecom [AT] for privacy reasons) wanted to stem the tide of customers churning from its telecom services. Customer churn in the telecommunications industry is common. However, Access Telecom was losing customers at an alarming rate. Several reasons and potential solutions were attributed to this phenomenon. The management of the company realized that many cancellations involved communications between the customer service department and the customers. To this end, a task force comprising members from the customer relations office and the information technology (IT) department was assembled to explore the problem further. Their task was to explore how the problem of customer churn could be reduced based on an analysis of the customers’ communication patterns (Asamoah, Sharda, Zadeh, & Kalgotra, 2016).

Big Data Hurdles

Whenever a customer had a problem about issues such as their bill, plan, and call quality, they would contact the company in multiple ways. These included a call center, company Web site (contact us links), and physical service center walk-ins. Customers could cancel an account through one of these listed interactions. The company wanted to see if analyzing these customer interactions could yield any insights about the questions the customers asked or the contact channel(s) they used before canceling their account. The data generated because of these interactions were in both text and audio. So, AT would have to combine all the data into one location. The company explored the use of traditional platforms for data management but soon found they were not versatile enough to handle advanced data analysis in the scenario where there were multiple formats of data from multiple sources (Thusoo, Shao, & Anthony, 2010).

There were two major challenges in analyzing this data: multiple data sources leading to a variety of data and also a large volume of data.

  1. DATA FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES: Customers could connect with the company by accessing their accounts on the company’s Web site, allowing AT to generate Web log information on customer activity. The Web log track allowed the company to identify if and when a customer reviewed his/her current plan, submitted a complaint, or checked the bill online. At the customer service center, customers could also lodge a service complaint, request a plan change, or cancel the service. These activities were logged into the company’s transaction system and then the enterprise data warehouse. Last, a customer could call the customer service center on the phone and transact business just like he/she would do in person at a customer service center. Such transactions could involve a balance inquiry or an initiation of plan cancellation. Call logs were available in one system with a record of the reasons a customer was calling. For meaningful analysis to be performed, the individual data sets had to be converted into similar structured formats.
  2. DATA VOLUME: The second challenge was the sheer quantity of data from the three sources that had to be extracted, cleaned, restructured, and analyzed. Although previous data analytics projects mostly utilized a small sample set of data for analysis, AT decided to leverage the multiple variety and sources of data as well as the large volume of data recorded to generate as many insights as possible.

An analytical approach that could make use of all the channels and sources of data, although huge, would have the potential of generating rich and in-depth insights from the data to help curb the churn.

Solution

Teradata Vantage’s unified Big Data architecture (previously offered as Teradata Aster) was utilized to manage and analyze the large multistructured data. We will introduce Teradata Vantage in Section 9.8. A schematic of which data was combined is shown in Figure 9.1. Based on each data source, three tables were created with each table containing the following variables: customer ID, channel of communication, date/time stamp, and action taken. Prior to final cancellation of a service, the action-taken variable could be one or more of these 11 options (simplified for this case): present a bill dispute, request for plan upgrade, request for plan downgrade, perform profile update, view account summary, access customer support, view bill, review contract, access store locator function on the Web site, access frequently asked questions section on the Web site, or browse devices. The target of the analysis focused on finding the most common path resulting in a final service cancellation. The data was sessionized to group a string of events involving a particular customer into a defined time period (5 days over all the channels of communication) as one session. Finally, Vantage’s nPath time sequence function (operationalized in an SQL-MapReduce framework) was used to analyze common trends that led to a cancellation.

Results

The initial results identified several routes that could lead to a request for service cancellation. The company determined thousands of routes that a customer may take to cancel service. A follow-up analysis was performed to identify the most frequent routes to cancellation requests. This was termed as the Golden Path. The top 20 most occurring paths that led to a cancellation were identified in both short and long terms. A sample is shown in Figure 9.2.

Figure 9.2 Full Alternative Text

This analysis helped the company identify a customer before they would cancel their service and offer incentives or at least escalate the problem resolution to a level where the customer’s path to cancellation did not materialize.

Sleep Journal

Sleep Journal and Reflection Project

The meaning, origin, and analysis of dreams have fascinated psychologists since the inception of the field of psychology. Sigmund Freud, often referred to as the father of psychology, focused a great deal of his theoretical energy on trying to understand and interpret dreams.

Contemporary psychologists are beginning to recognize the interconnectivity of human physiology and psychology in a way not previously understood. This is in part because of new interest in holistic health and in part because of brain/body connections we are now able to see and understand for the first time due to enhanced technology. Yoga, mindfulness, healthy eating, meditation, holistic health – all of these practices are gaining more traction in mainstream society and among psychological circles as we recognize how the mind and body work together.

Specifically, for this assignment you will:

  • Keep a sleep/dream journal
    • any dreams you had
    • any initial thoughts about the dream – events of       the day that may relate, etc.
    • your general sleep schedule (if you have a tracker       such as fitbit, include data on your sleep patterns as well –       wakefulness, restlessness, times asleep/awake per night, total sleep,       etc.)
    • your general eating habits by day
    • your general exercise habits by day
    • anything else of note in your psychological or       physical health (stress, excitement, changes, etc.)
  • You may use any format you wish to record the data      (notepad, computer, hardcopy spreadsheet, etc.).
  • Complete a 3 page reflection (not counting title      or reference pages) in which you analyze the results of your sleep/dream      journal. Consider how your psychological and physical health interacted.      What patterns did you see? Discuss the impact that various factors such as      fatigue, diet, stress and exercise had on your dreams and sleep patterns.      Explain how this insight may impact your behaviors in the future to lead      to better psychological and physical health.
  • Utilize at least 2 academic resources (your course      readings can comprise one of the sources) to support your analysis and      discussion.

In the Discussion for this module, you considered the interaction of nurse informaticists with other specialists to ensure successful care. How is that success determined?

Patient outcomes and the fulfillment of care goals is one of the major ways that healthcare success is measured. Measuring patient outcomes results in the generation of data that can be used to improve results. Nursing informatics can have a significant part in this process and can help to improve outcomes by improving processes, identifying at-risk patients, and enhancing efficiency.

  • Review the concepts of technology application as presented in the Resources.
  • Reflect on how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence may help fortify nursing informatics as a specialty by leading to increased impact on patient outcomes or patient care efficiencies.

The Assignment: (4-5 pages not including the title and reference page)

In a 4- to 5-page project proposal written to the leadership of your healthcare organization, propose a nursing informatics project for your organization that you advocate to improve patient outcomes or patient-care efficiency. Your project proposal should include the following:

  • Describe the project you propose.
  • Identify the stakeholders impacted by this project.
  • Explain the patient outcome(s) or patient-care efficiencies this project is aimed at improving and explain how this improvement would occur. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Identify the technologies required to implement this project and explain why.
  • Identify the project team (by roles) and explain how you would incorporate the nurse informaticist in the project team.
  • Use APA format and include a title page and reference page.
  • Use the Safe Assign Drafts to check your match percentage before submitting your work.

Describe the characteristics of the aging process.

 Topic 5 DQ 1

Erikson’s Developmental Stages, Ego Integrity Verses Despair is the final stage of development for 65 years of age and older. Accomplishments are viewed as satisfactory (ego integrity) or being a failure (despair). Elderly patients at this stage may often experience physical, spiritual, emotional, and cognitive crisis, (Green, 2018).

Keeping in mind that while performing a health assessment on an elderly patient, aside from a head-to-toe examination which is also used in young adults and middle-aged adults’ additional things to look for are functional abilities, and quality of life. Characteristics to look for in the aging process of the elderly include changes in the body’s systems, integumentary, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological, and over all comprehensive health. Cognitive assessment helps in determining the patient’s memory especially short term that can possibly be a sign of Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, (Green, 2018).

Additional characteristics of aging adults include 1. Life expectancy, Enjoying the quality of life and decreasing the incidence of hospitalizations is critical as well as safety and health promotion. 2.Fraility, a condition of vulnerable health accompanies aging and includes biomedical factors which in turn reduces abilities to cope with stressors like hospitalization. Symptoms of frailty include weakness, slowness feeling exhausted, decrease in physical activities weight loss, and shrinkage(height). 3. Chronicity, Genomic based chronic illnesses are triggered by aging immune systems leading to such conditions as Hypertension, Heart Disease, Asthma, stroke, Lower respirations, Cancer Arthritis, and Diabetes, (Green, 2018). 4. Dignity, A quality of feeling worthy and seen as one with honor and esteem. 5. Safety is a huge concern for the elderly patient, functional limitations restrict doing usual activities speech and thought process are slower and the ability to walk and think clearly decreases making it more dangerous for the elderly, (Green, 2018).

Elderly abuse is often overlooked, it is physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological harm by a trusted person inflicted on older adults it also includes financial exploitation or neglect. Many elderly people are vulnerable to elderly abuse for many reasons, the mental status of a patient caused by dementia or confusion can be hard to determine if abuse is present and for that reason patients are abused. Another factor that is a form of abuse is neglect by a care giver that includes the appearance of the patient, bed sores or other preventable conditions. Many times, patients will not report abuse for fear of retaliation from the caregiver who is usually a spouse, partner, adult children, or other family members. Elder abuse may be difficult to detect, but detecting it may save the life of an older adult, ( Elder Abuse, 2020).

Respond using 200-300 words APA format with references to support the discussion

Describe the characteristics of the aging process. Explain how some of the characteristics may lead to elder abuse (memory issues, vulnerability, etc.). Discuss the types of consideration a nurse must be mindful of while performing a health assessment on a geriatric patient as compared to a middle-aged adult.

Week 10 Assignment – Critical Threats to the Global Environment

Overview

The United Nations has continued to retain you as a consultant for a  project that deals with climate and the environment. Most developed  countries see the dangers of releasing too much carbon dioxide into the  atmosphere and are committed to climate policies that attain a  carbon-free future in the next 30 years. They already see the damaging  effects that this gas alone is having on the living conditions of crops,  wildlife, and humans. As a result, many member states are dissatisfied  with the progress of the eight Millennium Development Goals for  international development that they established in 2000. The member  states see a substantial disconnect between several issues that  developed and developing countries believe are priorities. For example,  Burundi wants one of the goals to focus on food security, while Austria  is adamant that a major global issue should be the negotiation of  ceasefires in countries in the midst of civil wars. The UN wants you to  work from the list below and prioritize two of the global community’s  threats that it deems the most serious to environmental stability.

Instructions

Step 1

Select two threats. Listed below are eight issues that the UN feels  pose the most significant threats to global security. Some of these  apply to the Earth’s 7.7 billion people, while others are limited  primarily to developing countries. Regardless of where these threats are  concentrated, your job as a consultant is to identify two of them that you consider the most critical to the globe’s population.

Issue Options
  1. The use of fossil fuels as an energy source.
  2. Globalization.
  3. Insufficient educational opportunities in developing countries.
  4. A lack of access to technology.
  5. Civil war (NOT the U.S. Civil War).
  6. The rise in oceans’ levels.
  7. Covid-19 and the global pandemic.
  8. The dangers of poor countries remaining poor.
Step 2

Write a minimum of an 8 page persuasive paper about your two threats.

Write an introduction paragraph of at least one-half page in length  identifying the two threats you have selected and the purpose of the  paper. Then, for the two threats you chose:

  1. Identify the factors that make it such a serious risk to the global environment that you would choose to present it to the UN.
  2. Analyze the role that humans have played in aggravating this threat to the Earth’s environment.
  3. Suggest initiatives that the global community can take to mitigate the worst effects of this environmental threat.
  4. Write a conclusion paragraph of at least  one-half page in length that summarizes your impressions of these risks  for global stability.

Guidelines

  1. This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS).  For assistance and information, please refer to the SWS link in the  left-hand menu of your course and check with your professor for any  additional instructions.
  2. In order to earn full credit, the answers to each of the three questions must be at least two full pages long, making six  pages. You must also include the one-half page introduction and  one-half page conclusion at the beginning and end of the paper, adding  up to one page of content. Finally, you must include a graph or table (see 5, below) that will be at least one page in length. The entire paper will be a minimum of eight pages long.
  3. You must use at least seven credible sources (excluding Wikipedia, dictionaries and encyclopedias) that are appropriate for the subjects under discussion.
  4. You must use only double-spacing and not place extra spacing between paragraphs or section headings.
  5. As part of your answer to any one of the questions, you must include a graph, table or chart using quantifiable data that supports your argument. You need only one graph for the entire assignment, and although you may download this item from the Internet, it may be no longer than one page  in length. You must comprehensively explain beneath the graph what the  data means. Otherwise, it will be of no use to the reader.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is as follows:

  • Propose suggestions for mitigation initiatives that address the threats to the stability of the global environment.
